FESTIVALOPENING WEEKEND THURSDAY JUNE 2 7:30 p.m. The Play That Goes Wrong

June 2 - 4 7:30 p.m. FESTIVALTHEATRE OPENING NIGHT!

The Play That Goes Wrong featuring The Hub City Players Mannoni Performing Arts Center Auditorium 107 Southern Drive, Hattiesburg, MS 39406

Adults $30 Children (12 and under) $15 with adult ticket purchase

FestivalSouth® will open its 13th season with a FestivalFavorite, the Hub City Players, presenting the Tony and Olivier Award-winner, The Play That Goes Wrong. From the producer of Avenue Q and Something Rotten! and producer J.J. Abrams (who we can only assume lost a bet), this hilarious comedy is a hybrid of Monty Python and Sherlock Holmes. The play invites the audience to the opening night of “The Murder at Haversham Manor” where things are quickly going from bad to utterly disastrous. With an unconscious leading lady, a corpse that can’t play dead, and actors who trip over everything (including their lines), it’s “A riotous explosion of comedy!” (The Daily Beast) and “Tons of fun for all ages!” (HuffPost).

A very special performance showcasing 5,000 years of China’s enduring music, from the Xia (2070 BC) to Qing (1912 AD) dynasties, the first part of the program contains piano transcriptions of some of these ancient Chinese melodies. The second section represents a period of hunger and suffering from the Japanese invasion of China in 1931, through the Civil War, the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, and the Cultural Revolution that followed World War II. Finally, the last portion celebrates the beauty of traditional Chinese songs, two of them being the “Liuyang River” and “Jasmine Flower.” Afterwards, please enjoy a reception in the Downey Gallery with an exhibition of works by Myra Meade.

Featuring the incredible Hub City Players, a FestivalFavorite and one of the state’s most talented troupe of show people, Broadway music lovers are in for an unforgettable onenight-only evening celebrating the Broadway master, Stephen Sondheim. Enjoy his most memorable songs and stories as told through new jazz arrangements and his personal letters.

The Meistersingers are excited to share the climactic pinnacle to its 25th anniversary season, the masterwork that is Johannes Brahms’ Requiem. Few of Brahms’ works display their influences as openly as his Requiem does; numerous passages clearly evoke the music of Schumann, Beethoven and Bach. At the same time, every measure is unmistakably Brahms. Though the death of his mother was the immediate catalyst for the work, Brahms’ German Requiem is more concerned with offering comfort to the living. “I would very gladly omit the ‘German’ as well, and simply put ‘of Mankind,’” suggests that he wished to offer this solace to all listeners, regardless of their own religious beliefs or backgrounds. Musically, the requiem was a major milestone in Brahms’ career. Indeed, it would be the longest and most grandly scored piece he would ever write.

Sincerely, Stephen Sondheim Featuring the Hub City Players Hattiesburg Cultural Center
