THE MLC FUND

While MLC students grow in faith, master their subjects, and sharpen their skills, your gift to the MLC FUND supports them every step of the way. Your gift goes to work immediately, meeting the highest-priority needs at the WELS College of Ministry. It provides for outstanding classroom instruction, essential student services, and all the infrastructure that equips future pastors, teachers, and staff ministers for a lifetime of gospel service.

Behind every MLC SCHOLARSHIP is a story—like this one about Elizabeth Mara Johnson, who graduated from MLC in 2010 and had a vibrant ministry before God took her home just 10 years later.

The CONGREGATIONAL PARTNER GRANT PROGRAM (CPGP) is a powerful partnership between MLC and WELS congregations that makes ministry preparation more affordable for MLC students. It’s also our greatest financial need.

CPGP is a great blessing—and our greatest financial need.

In 2025-26, more than 90% of MLC students received CPGP funds, and we disbursed almost $2 million to them! In 2026-27, we’ll disburse even more. We’re so thankful for all the grants congregations are sending in—and we recognize what a challenge it is to match them!

The ELIZABETH MARA JOHNSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP was established in 2025 by her parents, Mr. Gary and Mrs. Sandra (Wilkes) Johnson DMLC ’75.

After graduating from Wisconsin Lutheran High School in 2004, Liz pursued music and dramatic arts at the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay. She later worked as a nanny and as a flight attendant, but God was leading her in another direction.

She came to see that her gifts, her love for children, and her heart for service all found their true home in Lutheran education.

After a battle with cancer, Elizabeth was called home to heaven in 2020. In the months that followed, her parents heard from many former students who shared how she had inspired them to become teachers or had made a lasting difference in their lives.

Liz enrolled at MLC, graduated in December 2010, and served joyfully as a teacher at Lord of Life in Friendswood, Texas; Christ the King in Palm Coast, Florida; and St. Matthew in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin.

Today, by God’s grace, the Johnsons continue Liz’s legacy by helping future teachers. The scholarship supports education majors with financial need, with preference given to second-career and nontraditional students.

You can help MLC match the grants!

We cannot do this alone. We depend on benefactors like you whose gifts help us match the congregational grants. Whether your church has students enrolled at MLC or not, you can give to the CPGP Matching Fund at MLC. If you give $1,800, you will match a student’s grant 100%! But gifts of all sizes are welcome and appreciated.

MLC students are incredibly grateful! If they receive a CPGP grant from their church every year, they could erase more than $14,000 from the cost of college.
