An Amazing A : e f i L r dventure u o Y Many of you met MLC’s new president, Mark Zarling, when he visited your high schools last spring. He looks forward to seeing you again—hopefully as a new freshman on our campus. Recognizing, however, that many days and many decisions stand between today and your first day of college, here’s President Zarling’s message for you:

“As you consider your future, the first thing to do is to pray and to realize that your heavenly Father is going to bless you no matter what path in life you take. A good place to pray and think about your future is right here at MLC, where you can grow in the Word and be nurtured by the Spirit in that Word. But realize this: It’s not wrong to come up here with questions—wondering whether you really should do this. God will guide you, and he’ll open and close doors accordingly. And finally, as Paul says, ‘Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.’ No matter what you choose, you will be used by the Lord. We’re just excited that you’re considering this vocation.”

President Zarling finds the ministry itself an exciting vocation—an adventure even: “Because your life becomes an amazing adventure, the Lord takes you to places he knows are best, not only for the kingdom and the souls you serve, but also best for you and your gifts at that particular time in your life. It’s humbling to think that God knows how to use us better than we know how

to use ourselves. And sometimes he puts us in places we never would’ve chosen for ourselves.

When we’re there, he pulls us and molds us and stretches us, and we grow because of it. ‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’

“Also remember that you live by faith, not sight.

You may not understand the results of your gospel work until heaven, when you see the trophies of grace the Spirit won. You can’t fully know or measure the results here on the earth. But a word you spoke that you’ve long since forgotten might have touched someone’s heart. And the kindness you don’t even remember might have turned a life around.

“Paul tells us in Colossians, ‘Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.’ Keep your heavenly pair of glasses on, and you’ll see what the world cannot see as you make plans for college and for life.”

Cafeteria Goes Late-Night New for 2007-08: After 7 pm, the cafeteria will transform into a snack bar and coffee shop. Order a pizza and sit in the atrium with your friends. Or grab a cappuccino and a corner booth to memorize those vocables.

If dim lighting and a comfy club chair are in order, Starbooks, the library coffee bar, is open weeknights as well.

Pay Us a Visit Brochures, magazines, and calls from your admissions counselors can only do so much. The best way to really get a feel for a school—the atmosphere, the students, the dorms, the food!—is to pay a visit. MLC has three different types of campus visits. Try one, two, or all three.

A Little 6 AM Dip Want to swim a few laps before class? Just down the hill from MLC is Vogel Arena, the latest “addition” to our campus. By presenting your student ID, like Adrienne Bengel (pictured), you gain free access to the pool, field house, fitness center, and locker room. For a small fee, you can also play racquetball and tennis, as well as take yoga, aerobics, and aqua-exercise classes. Jump in—the water’s fine.

• If your mom or dad wants to come, try a Family Open House. All high school students and their families can take a tour, get the low-down on financial aid, see the dorms, taste the food, and watch a game or a play. Family Open House: September 15, October 27, February 2, and April 19.

• If you want to taste student life, schedule a Personal Visit. You’ll get an MLC host and an appointment with an admissions counselor to talk about your future. You’ll also take in a few classes and co-curriculars, eat in the cafeteria, and sleep in the dorm. Personal Visit: Call us (507.354.8221 x280) to schedule one.

• If you’d like to come to MLC with a group of students who are considering ministry, then a Focus on Ministry is for you. Your Thursday-to-Saturday schedule will include talks with experienced called workers about ministry itself, as well as meetings with admissions counselors, coaches, music directors, and current students.

Our newest counselor, Dustin Sievert, wanted to be a pastor since second grade, when he was a ball boy of the Northwestern College* basketball team. “Instead of having Michael Jordan as a role model,” he says, “I looked up to the guys studying to be pastors at Northwestern. Maybe as I develop relationships with kids in the synod, I can influence and encourage them the way those guys encouraged me.”

“Dustin’s got great energy and a real passion for this place and for ministry,” says fellow admissions counselor Sarah Zahrt. “He’s really easy to talk to. I think the kids will have a blast getting to know him.”

Immerse Yourself in Spanish Amanda Musinski (Michigan Luth. Sem.), Joshua Gumm, Anna Kieckhaefer (Luther Prep), Ashley Lecker (Michigan Luth. Sem.), and Dave Sigrist (Westerville North HS--Ohio), along with about two dozen others, spent a month in Chile this summer. The annual Spanish immersion experience allows MLC students and the other participants to focus on the Spanish language (they attend Spanish classes and

sign a “Spanish-Only Language Pledge”) and also study the culture of different Spanish-speaking countries. If you are a part of the Spanish program at MLC, you can look forward to an immersion experience too—maybe in Chile, Ecuador, or Argentina. (Note: This year Anna is teaching English in Dominican Republic, a Spanish-speaking country, through MLC’s Daylight International program.)

Didn’t I Meet You on Facebo o k ?

MLC freshman orientation this year looked more like a class reunion. That’s because the MLC class of 2011 set up a Facebook account, and well before school started, roommates, teammates, and classmates exchanged photos, ideas, and DVD lists.

That’s probably the kind of thing MLC classes will be doing their whole lives, because technology and ministry are great partners. Ministry is about a message, and the more ways we communicate that message and make connections through that message, the better.

Many pastors and teachers already have Facebook accounts and do their share of texting and instantmessaging. They also build church websites, send e-newsletters, introduce Bible studies with YouTube videos, and project liturgy and PowerPoint sermons on their churches’ big screens.

And that’s just the beginning. Each incoming MLC class brings a greater store of tech-know-how, and we can’t wait to see how you will use your minds, your creativity, and your cursors in gospel ministry.

Daylight International Back in the day, you had just a slim chance of becoming a foreign missionary. Now, if you want to teach in Thailand, Malawi, Colombia—or about a dozen places around the world—you can. For the past several years, we’ve had about 50 MLC students and grads teaching overseas and assisting at missions through Daylight International. About 20 of them entered the first annual MLC Thalassa photo-and-essay contest.

Their essay submissions give us a glimpse into this exciting ministry. Here are a few: Considering Clay: . . . . Instantly my students were drawn to a corner where a man was sculpting on the wheel. He threw the clay and as it spun the dirt came alive. . . . I remembered that I simply wanted them to watch the Potter.

To see how he gave his only Son as their Savior and how he’s shaping them. The potter dipped his hands into the water to finish the vessel and I was taken aback at how God uses even first year teachers, only clay jars, to share the joy of forgiveness with their students. . . .

The Lost Sheep of Southeast Asia: The story goes that a shepherd left ninety-nine of his sheep to go after one who had strayed from the flock and become lost. . . . what’s one more sheep? Likewise, what’s one more Asian acquaintance? A lost soul in dire need of the hope that only the Good Shepherd provides. . . .

Where Two or Three Come Together: 75 miles north of Dourados, Brazil, there is a modest little fazenda with a few cows and chickens, a palm tree, and a sugar cane field.

This is where Mariana and Marcelena live. . . . Once every three months, Star of Bethlehem Lutheran Church holds a service with the Lord’s Supper for this family and their neighbors. . . . With a white tablecloth draped over the oven for an altar and fifteen people singing hymns under a beautiful night sky, the Lord was present. . . . Although these little girls may have never entered a church, they too know that Jesus loves them.

Christians in a Buddhist World: . . . Thailand is 97% Buddhist, and religion and culture are almost inseparable. . . . Every day I teach Bible stories to children from Christian and Buddhist backgrounds. . . . Help! My Roommate Is a Total Slob!

Going to college can equal culture shock. And one of the biggest learning experiences is being thrown into close quarters with a stranger who’s very different from you: • You like things just so, and your new roommate is a slob.

• You have four brothers, and you like noise. Your roommate is an only child, and he likes reading.

• You’re from L.A., and your roommate is from Alma. (Where? My point precisely.)

The most common problems for roommates generally fall into these categories: cleanliness, study time, bedtime, music tastes, sharing and borrowing stuff, and visitors.

So what do you do? First, here’s what you don’t do: • Don’t expect too much. (Your roommate might become your best friend, or you may run in

different crowds and just share the room. Either way is okay.)

• Don’t insist on your own way. (Your roommate is paying for the room too.)

• Don’t give in to your roommate on everything.

(You rightly need certain conditions for your health, your studies, and your sanity.)

• Don’t keep all your feelings in, thinking that you’re being nice. (You’ll just get angry, and it’ll come out later—not good for relationship building.)

• Don’t complain about every little thing.

(You might just learn to love country music.)

Instead, practice basic human decency and Christian love: Compromise. Ask. Apologize. Be considerate, respectful, flexible. And talk, talk, talk, telling the truth in love.

I just kept praying about it, and one day while I was doing VBS right before my senior year I realized that I really liked teaching. MLC also helps you make your decision.
