Reflections on Luke 5 and the Mission of Martin Luther College

No doubt the perfect Rabbi had a perfect lesson. I imagine the third-shift fisherman, despite his fatigue, remained riveted by the words of truth winsomely taught. Besides, the Teacher sat in the fisherman’s own boat—how could the man doze off? And the crowd! Crushing to the water’s edge, jostling to see and hear. Despite distractions, the fisherman listened. That fisherman was Simon, and what he heard were words from the Incarnate Word, words that sank into his weary body, soothed his soul, and calmed his mind.

But the words after the lesson shocked him: Put into deep water and let down the nets. Now? It was the wrong time, the wrong place, and his back still ached from the night’s exhausting—and empty— efforts. Still, the Teacher had asked, so Simon responded in faith: But because you say so, I will let down the nets.

The nets filled to breaking. Boats began to sink at the abundance of fish. It was an incredible catch, never before experienced. Simon’s reaction? Guilt. Astonishment. Awe. Obedience. He follows the One who said from now on you will catch men. Because Jesus says so, Peter goes!

Never be surprised at the power of the living Word from the living Savior. True, miracles in our lives don’t often burst nets and inundate boats. But consider how richly a gracious God blesses us—as individuals and as a church—when we take him at his Word!

True, the world and our sinful nature remain skeptical. Train gospel workers for a world hostile to the gospel? Send more workers to more places when resources suggest pulling back? Strategically plan for ministry when headlines herald a confusing and chaotic future? Yes, we will, because you say so, dear Lord: Go into all the world . . . I am with you always . . . My word will not return empty . . . My strength is made perfect in weakness . . . The Father will give you whatever you ask in my name . . . Ask the Lord of the harvest to send forth workers . . .

At MLC, we continue to train workers who will meet the ministry needs of the church, trusting completely in the God who says so. This issue of InFocus reviews how we have prayerfully sought to do just that in the 2012-2013 school year, with a special emphasis on six Compelled to Speak Strategic Plan initiatives we have put into place: • Building an Early Childhood Learning Center • Sending Graduates to Serve in Russia • Starting a Special Education Major

• Mentoring New Teachers • Keeping Student Costs Low • Certifying ECE Teachers in the Field

During this Pentecost season, we ask our Lord to pour out his Spirit, that we may be bold to act.

Because you say so, dear Lord, we wait for the miracles.

We’re building a new

ECLC

Grasping the gospel opportunities presented by early childhood education (ECE), congregations have opened preschools and learning centers in record numbers, and they are coming to MLC for their ECE teachers and directors. To meet this need, MLC is enrolling more ECE majors (with a jump from 62 to 115 in the last six years) and building a new 15,000-square foot Early Childhood Learning Center, a laboratory school, to train them. ECE majors Robin Nommensen (St. Peter-Weyauwega WI), Maura Keese (St. Marcus-Milwaukee), and Alyssa Marshall (St. JohnBurlington WI) (pictured) guided some of their little students at the groundbreaking April 6.

The $3 million in generous gifts we’ve received through our Let the Children Come campaign has made this center possible. We thank you. And we ask God to bless early childhood ministries at MLC and at congregations around the country, that more and more children and families hear the good news that will change their lives.

Russia

Add Russia to the list of countries where MLC graduates will teach English and share the gospel.

As WELS Missionary Luke Wolfgramm did errands in Tomsk one day, he noticed a sign: “English House.” It was one of five Tomsk centers that taught English as a second language, and the director, Irina Shvadlenko, wanted to hire the teachers Pastor Wolfgramm offered on the spot. MLC Daylight International Coordinator Tom Hunter investigated the possibilities in Russia in October 2012. The result: Five MLC students—Amanda Burk (Trinity-Nicollet MN), Erik Janke (St. Martin-Watertown SD), Paul Spaude (Ascension-Antigo WI), Elizabeth Henke (Star of Bethlehem-New Berlin WI), and Joanna Wordell (Bethany-Kenosha WI)—will teach at the English House in Tomsk, a cultural center in southern Siberia. Outside their work hours, they will assist with mission work in the area. (Pictured: Ms. Shvadlenko speaks to Amanda Burk and Erik Janke on MLC’s campus.)

In the next few years, we hope to send more grads to Tomsk, and then Novosibirsk and other Russian cities, where people are yearning to hear the gospel of Christ.

Special Education Major More and more WELS schools are serving children with special needs such as medical, developmental, emotional, behavioral, or learning difficulties. To meet this ministry need, the MLC Governing Board approved the addition of a special education undergraduate major in February 2013.

We envision a number of MLC students double-majoring in elementary education and special education, equipping each to serve as a regular classroom teacher and also as a resource for the school’s special-needs children, their parents, and other faculty members.

Professor Daryl Hanneman DMLC ’75 (pictured), who has taught special education courses in our graduate program, has accepted the call to teach in this new undergraduate major. Classes will commence in fall 2013.

MLC graduates embark on their teaching assignments with hundreds of hours of clinical experience in both WELS and public schools. In cooperation with the Commission on Lutheran Schools (CLS), MLC will give these teachers post-graduation support as well, helping transition them into the teaching profession with a two-year New Teacher Induction (NTI) program.

Each new teacher is paired with a trained mentor who communicates weekly, speeding up the new teacher’s pursuit of excellence through self-reflection, student data, comparison to teaching standards, and best instructional practices. Over 30 states require mentoring for their new teachers. CLS piloted this program in the Milwaukee area several years ago.

Beginning in 2014, MLC will continue this program nationally under the leadership of Professor Jonathan Schaefer.

Costs Low

The economic downturn of the last several years has hit academia especially hard. Between 2001 and 2011, the cost of private college education rose 31%; public, 42%. Not immune to the country’s economic difficulties, MLC has had to increase tuition, room and board as well.

For 2013-14, we raised our costs by 5%. But, as compensatory measures, we also increased our need-based financial aid by 5% and added residence hall amenities.

Please note three important points: 1. The cost of MLC is still less than half that of the average private college. 2. Our students are deeply grateful for the financial assistance WELS members provide through scholarships, endowments, special gifts, and their congregational mission offerings. 3. We will continue to do our best to provide a high-quality education at a reasonable price. Our mission is too important to do anything less. We Certify Current

ECE Teachers

Last year, 10,423 children were enrolled in 403 WELS preschools and early childhood centers.

One quarter of those children were unchurched or non-Christian. To maximize this gospel opportunity, many ECE teachers want more training, but they cannot dedicate the time required to complete a bachelor’s degree in education. So MLC provides the 10 one-credit courses necessary for Child Development Association (CDA) certification. Online courses and we-come-to-you summer satellite courses make this certification convenient.

We pray that partnering with MLC will help every teacher become more confident and competent in helping children learn—especially about the love of their Savior Jesus.

All-UMAC: Junior Galen Holzheuter (St. Mark-Mankato MN) is named First Team All-UMAC in football. Later this year, he will also make First Team in basketball and baseball, the first MLC athlete to earn First Team honors in three sports in the same school year since at least 2007. Holzhueter will also join the 1,000 Point Club in basketball, the ninth MLC men’s player to do so.

Student Service Daylight International

Eighteen 2013 graduates opted to serve overseas for a year or more. They may have their own classroom, teach English as a second language, assist missionaries, and share the good news with people they meet.

Daylight USA

Every year, about 150 MLC students offer a week or more of service to a WELS congregation not their own. We call this our Daylight USA program. With assistance from WELS Kingdom Workers, these students—volunteers generally—travel to congregations coast to coast to canvass, prepare mailings, teach VBS, coach sports Bible camps, play organ, do office work, paint, rake—whatever the churches need.

Of special note, four students (pictured)— Amanda Flunker (St. Peter-Freedom WI), Russ Scoggins (Holy Word-Austin TX), Lauren Grove (Resurrection-Rochester MN), and Peter Plagenz (St. Paul-Manchester WI)—took their services to New York in March. Through WELS Christian Aid and Relief, they helped members of Grace of God-Dix Hills NY clean up after Superstorm Sandy, and then they traveled to Queens to assist Sure Foundation congregation with canvassing, mailings, and Easter service preparation.

Mastering Education Eleven graduate students earned their Master of Science in Education degree in May, bringing the total number of MS Ed grads to 45. The graduates are pictured here with members of the MLC graduate faculty, which numbers 27. MLC’s master’s program is growing as more and more teachers want to increase their professional acumen in a way that is convenient and affordable. Current enrollment is 111. “I did start master’s degree programs at other universities but did not finish,” says Jason Kelley, MS Ed. “I chose MLC’s master’s program because of the topnotch faculty members. At times they expect quite a bit of you, but I’m very happy about that, because they push you to do your best with the gifts and talents the Lord has given to you.”

The program offers four emphases—instruction, leadership, special education, and educational technology—enabling educators to customize their coursework to match their ministry.

This year saw the advent of a new online discussion forum: Issues in Lutheran Education. In this bi-monthly blog, writers tackle the toughest issues in Lutheran education. The large number of readers—over 1600 one day this year—demonstrates the relevance and impact of these topical discussions. Blog titles this year included “The Leadership Crisis in WELS” and “Is It Too Late for WELS Schools?” Writers also explored funding models for WELS schools, administrative release time, and serving children with special needs.

“This discussion is healthy,” says the director of graduate studies and blog facilitator, Dr. John Meyer. “We need a collaborative approach to address the critical issues facing WELS schools.” Meyer invites all teachers to take a look at Issues in Lutheran Education: “Subscribe. 50th Reunion for DMLHS Class of 1963 Thirty-five members of the Dr. Martin Luther High School Class of 1963—more than half the class—gathered June 9 for a reunion banquet at the Holiday Inn, New Ulm. Class President Dale Walz shared a PowerPoint presentation of class photos, events, and historical information; and Judy Schewe Tjernagel read the class prophecy, which no one admitted to writing. The next day, class members and their spouses attended chapel and toured campus. The class has given a generous gift to the Early Childhood Learning Center. Governing Board Digest The following summaries were submitted by Vice President for Administration Steve Thiesfeldt ’74.

September 20-21, 2012 (on campus) • The board learned of several end-of-year retirements and resolved to issue calls to replace them: VP for Mission Advancement Jonathan Scharlemann and Professors John Gronholz, Susan Haar, and Mark Lenz.

• The board resolved to extend a call for a New Teacher Induction program coordinator.

• The board approved fee increases of 5% for 2013-14, bringing tuition, room and board for fulltime students to $17,160. They also approved a corresponding 5% increase in need-based financial assistance.

• Vice President David Wendler and board member Rev. Michael Otterstatter reported the ECLC Building Committee plans: the razing of Luther Manor in March and construction beginning in April with completion set for September.

The final project cost will not exceed $3.385 million.

[Subsequently, snow delayed completion target dates to October.]

• The board received an update from developer Anton Doneff on the 50-unit senior living complex to be built next to the new ECLC. A recent survey showed interest among prospective tenants remains strong. [Subsequently, the college completed the property sale to Doneff in June.]

• The board approved budgets for fiscal years 2014 ($17.4 million) and 2015 ($17.9 million), each including a synodical subsidy of $3.6 million and wage increases averaging 1.75%.

• Mark Arnold, president of WELS Investment Funds (WIF), reported MLC has $6.6 million invested with WIF, representing approximately 5% of WIF’s assets. Investment returns for the year are in the 8% range and should remain static in coming months. [The majority of these funds are restricted for student financial assistance.]

• The board authorized the expenditure of Let the Children Come capital campaign funds for construction of a new Early Childhood Learning Center (ECLC).

• The board approved the addition of a special education major and the calling of a special education professor for the 2013-2014 year.

December 29, 2012 (teleconference) • The board approved an interim funding plan for the new ECLC, subject to Synodical Council approval. Although current gifts fall short of the $3.385 bid given by RW Carlstrom Construction of Mankato, rather than delay construction and risk potential increases, the plan directs the use of institutional reserve funds until the required monies have been raised.

• The board extended divine calls. [See page 31.]

• In response to the anticipated retirement of Dr. Carla Melendy and the resignation of Prof. Kurt Wittmershaus, a request to extend calls for two additional positions was approved: one male and one female professor of education, both for student teaching supervision.

• Dr. Wendler reported that a proposal for a special education major is under development and may come before both the faculty and the board at upcoming meetings in February.

February 7-8, 2013 (on campus) • The board approved a standard distribution of $170,643 from the Romberg Supporting Foundation: $127,982 (75%) for MLC tuition assistance and $42,661 (25%) for Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School.

• The board extended divine calls. [See page 31.]

• The board recommended hiring Mr. Jonathan Scharlemann as a part-time deferred gift counselor.

• The board learned of the 2014 retirements of Dr. John Nolte and Instructor Lanita Nolte and approved the calling of a music professor immediately for the 2013-2014 year.

• The board received a report on the need for three additional early childhood positions in the new ECLC. These calls will be extended by an internal group from the college.

• The board declined a request received in February from Pilgrim Lutheran in Minneapolis to partner as “authorizer” for the establishment of a charter school in the Twin Cities area.

• The board approved a plan to offer a Teaching Online Certificate program through Continuing Education.

• The board encouraged further investigation of an overture from several local organizations to construct and maintain an indoor recreation facility, in partnership with MLC, on MLC athletic fields.

• The board acknowledged with appreciation the highly visible efforts of the Campus Beautification Committee.

• The board encouraged the administration to address the issue of transitional housing, given the large influx of new faculty members for 2013-14.

• The board encouraged the administration to continue exploration of options for placement of a Verizon cell phone tower on the campus. [Subsequently, Verizon opted not to build the tower on the MLC campus.]

• The board approved the implementation of the Compelled to Speak strategic plan with the addition of a tracking mechanism for regular reporting. mlc-wels.edu 29

Faculty Retirements Professor John Gronholz DMLC ’68 served as a tutor and coach at Northwestern Prep, now Luther Preparatory School, in Watertown WI; as teacher and athletic director at St. PaulLake Mills WI; and as teacher, coach, and athletic director at Evergreen Lutheran High School-Dupont WA. He was called to DMLC in 1985 and served this campus faithfully for 28 years as professor of physical education and head coach or assistant coach of track, football, baseball, and women’s soccer. He served as physical education division chair since 2007 and as the Wellness Committee chair since 2008.

“Professor Gronholz professed his love for his Savior and ministry in all he did and all he said,” said his former student and newly called PE professor, Dan Gawrisch. “He prepared countless future called workers to teach to the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains from a Christian perspective. Ever on the pursuit of best practice in physical education, he brought a high level of professionalism and respect to this subject area at MLC and instilled in his students a desire for lifelong learning.”

Jack and his wife, Memory, have moved to Onalaska WI to be near two of their four children.

Professor Susan Haar DMLC ’65 served her Lord faithfully as an elementary school teacher from 1965 to 2001 at four Lutheran elementary schools: Good Shepherd-Burton MI, St. Matthew-Winona MN, Trinity-Waukesha WI, and Atonement-Baltimore MD. She was called to MLC in 2001 to serve as director of the Early Childhood Learning Center (ECLC), and in 2005 she became a professor of early childhood education. She has been a valuable member of the ECLC Committee and will retire just as the new ECLC is built.

“Susan is a dedicated servant whose leadership in the classroom and early childhood center focused on ‘growing brains’ for service in God’s kingdom,” said friend and colleague Dr. Carla Melendy. “She is an avid reader and inquisitive scholar who finds ways to transfer theory into

practice without diluting complex concepts. Her quiet and unassuming manner as well as her strong understanding of ministry allows her to communicate effectively with people of all ages as demonstrated in many and varied calls throughout the years.”

Professor Haar will continue to teach early childhood education courses next year on an adjunct basis.

Dr. Mark Lenz WLS ’69 served as pastor at Trinity-Morenci MI, instructor at St. Croix Lutheran High School-West St. Paul MN, and pastor at Star of Bethlehem-Savoy IL before accepting a call in 1981 to serve as professor of religion and history at Dr. Martin Luther College.

In his 32 years of faithful campus service, he served at various times as history division chair and religion division chair and as chair or member of many committees, including the Worship Committee and the Curriculum Oversight Committee. He also acted as College Choir tour manager from 1998 to 2010 and as associate editor of the Lutheran Educator from 1998 to 2003. He has published several books and Bible studies through Northwestern Publishing House.

“When I think of serving with a servant's heart, I think of Dr. Lenz,” said friend and colleague, Vice President for Academics David Wendler. “As a result of his work ethic and eagerness to serve others, Mark accomplished an amazing amount of work. When asked to serve in any capacity, Mark's common response is ‘Sure, if it furthers the gospel.’”

Next year, Dr. Lenz will teach at Asia Lutheran Seminary in Hong Kong.

Dr. Carla Melendy served as grade 3-4 teacher at Trinity-Waukesha WI and co-administrator and K-8 teacher at Atonement-Baltimore MD before being called to Martin Luther College in 1999 as a student teacher supervisor and education professor. She has taught at MLC on both the undergraduate and graduate levels and will continue to do so next year on a limited, adjunct basis.

Professor Susan Haar said, “Carla actively lives her faith and puts it into caring action for others. She is a persistent pursuer of teaching and learning best practices. Never

content to maintain the status quo, she continued her own education in order to keep alive her love of learning. In turn, she made learning come alive for those she taught, whether she was teaching young children or adults. She plans, consistently follows through on those plans, and assesses their outcomes. She is truly a professional educator!”

Jonathan Scharlemann served MLC as vice president for mission advancement from 2006 to 2013. Prior to his work at the college, he was a WELS Christian giving counselor and the director of mission advancement for The Lutheran Home Association (TLHA) of Belle Plaine MN. In January TLHA honored Jon with the 2013 Care of the Soul Leadership Award.

Vice President for Administration Steve Thiesfeldt said, “Jon brought his upbeat, humble, and Christ-centered approach to the college when he became the first leader of our mission advancement effort in 2006. His love for the Savior and Martin Luther College has left an indelible mark on his service to the college.”

Jon will retire in summer 2013 and then assume a part-time role at MLC with an emphasis on deferred gifts.
