Pressured?

I see the distressed looks on many of your faces.

Are you feeling the crunch? Many of you express to me the feelings of pressure . . . most often making decisions for the future.

Relax and Enjoy the Ride . . . Do you feel like you have a lot on your plate? ACT

tests? Scholarship forms? Financial aid? Adults pressuring you? Jobs? Friends? Relationships?

College/future decisions? Current responsibilities?

Family obligations? I‘ll bet it makes you want to go home, flop on the couch, flip on the TV, and make it all go away.

You are entering the adult decision-making stage of life—the time when you look back on the days when “things were so easy and simple.” I often yearn for my own childhood days—riding around the block on my bike, eating ice cream on the back step. The biggest worry at that time was what project would our sibling “club” tackle today?

My prayer is that amongst all the pressures, you all enjoy the ride along the way. You do high school only once, so don’t let the pressures lessen the fun of the upcoming drama production, athletic event, senior trip, or prom.

When the pressures come tumbling down on you, relax, take it a day at a time, and put your trust in the Lord. We often feel we need all our answers now and that we need to solve everything this moment.

But what comfort it is to know our omniscient Lord has it all in control! When we are uncertain about something, we put our faith and trust in him. Enjoy the ride. He is always by our side!

One day a year, students trade in their books for rakes, bags, calluses, and tan lines. It’s Arbor Day—a day to tidy up the campus, have a picnic, and play some lazy afternoon games with your friends.

Late-Night

Channel Choices MLC students seldom hit the sack before midnight. And they feel strongly about which late-night show provides background noise while they finish the Western Civ paper due second hour the next day. Admissions Counselor Mark Gnewuch polled 60 students on their late-night TV preferences. Here are the highly scientific results:

Ministry = Adventure with Pastor Ross Stelljes

When our new Admissions Counselor Pastor Ross Stelljes (STELL-yus) talks to you about the ministry, he’ll use words like adventure, powerful, and personal. That’s what the ministry has been for him. For example, at his church’s farewell dinner for him, one woman stood up and said, “How can I thank somebody for saving my life?”

Pastor Stelljes thought she meant her spiritual life. “In that sense, yes, we’re God’s tools using the gospel to save lives,” he says. But that’s not what she meant. “The day you first called me,” she told him later, “that was the day I was going to kill myself.”

The day Pastor Stelljes called her was the first time he had ever spoken to her, much less met her, but his words—God’s words—reached her when she was near the end of her rope.

That’s how powerful the gospel ministry is. And Pastor Stelljes can’t wait to talk to you about it.

Get Your Bandanas, Ya Hear?

MLC’s Indoor Pool MLC now has an indoor pool, track, and other fitness and recreation facilities. In fact, we have a whole fitness and recreation center. It’s just a five-minute walk down the hill, at Vogel Recreation Center.

Our new agreement with Vogel gives MLC students free membership. This includes free access to the pool, field house, fitness center, and locker room. For a small fee, students can also play racquetball and tennis, as well as take yoga, aerobics, and aqua-exercise classes. You’ll love it.

It’s Official: Your ECE Degree in Four Years You can now do a four-year Early Childhood Education program at MLC, which includes student teaching little guys like this one at the MLC Early Childhood Learning Center.

Previously, students double-majored in Early Childhood and Elementary Education, preparing them to teach at pre-school and elementary levels, and that option—a five-year plan—is still open to you.

Student Senate:

Serving Campus and Community Homecoming, Winter Carnival, Swine Sizzler, and Arbor Day would never be the huge successes they are without the planning of MLC’s Student Senate. But the Senate serves the greater community as well. They maintain a couple miles of Minnesota Highway 15, which means spring and fall pick-ups by dedicated students like Emily Bey (Luther Prep), Jamie Spielbauer (Fox Valley LHS), and Katie Spaude (Antigo High—Antigo WI).

The Senate, led by President Mike Strusz (Fox Valley LHS), sponsors a few annual Blood Drives, Twins trips, game nights, and campus contests, and also awards four $250 scholarships to graduating seniors who have made a contribution to life at MLC using their God-given talents and abilities in some significant way.

Five Thousand Attend

Cinderella

Over 5000 grade school children, some from over 400 miles away, attended MLC Forum’s production of Cinderella in April. “Children’s Theater is a privilege,” said Director Kevin Boushek (Luther Prep), a senior pre-seminary student, “and every aspect of the production has been fun, from practice and set construction to costume design.”

Every year MLC Forum presents a musical, fall drama, readers’ theater, children’s theater, and outdoor classical theater (usually Shakespeare) production. About 20% of the student body gets involved in at least one dramatic production, whether on stage or behind the scenes.

Seniors, Start College Now!

Did you know that you can get a few college credits under your belt before you come to MLC? You can take three courses online: Computer Applications, Literature and Writing I (both required for all freshmen), and Geography of North America (required for all except pre-seminary students). You need a GPA of 3.0 or higher and the approval of your school’s guidance counselor to take an online course. There is also a fee for these courses.

MLC, which is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, will award college credit for successfully completed courses. 17 Tips from This Year’s Frosh

All you need to know to survive your freshman year!

1. DON’T walk, run, skip, hop, or attempt to jump over the seal.

7. DON’T use Facebook as a form of procrastination. Trust me, I know.

8. DO get to know your advisors. You’ve got questions. They’ve got answers.

9. DO check out Flandrau State Park.

10. DO get to know other students at MLC. They will someday be your co-workers.

11. DON’T be naïve. A walk with someone of the opposite gender is not always just a walk.

Back at the dorm, they’ll be asking to see your engagement ring. Trust me, I know.

12. DO become friends with the many forms of caffeine.

13. DO take advantage of the all-you-can-eat ice cream in the cafeteria.

14. DO become involved with intramurals—especially after the all-you-can-eat ice cream.

15. DO visit Hermann the German.

Even Some Freshmen Still Aren’t Sure

2. DO utilize the 24-hour McDonald’s drive-thru—especially when the Monopoly game is going on.

3. DO room with someone you don’t know. It’s the best way to meet new people.

4. DON’T sit on the lower left side of the auditorium during chapel—unless you really want to share a hymnal with a professor.

5. DO visit Starbooks coffee shop in the basement of the library. (See #12.)

6. DO join a choir.

By their second semester of college, some freshmen are a bit antsy. They’re attending MLC, the synod’s teacher-training college—but they haven’t gotten to do any actual teaching yet. Other students are concerned because they’re still not sure whether teaching will be the right profession for them.

Fortunately, in early spring, Freshman Early Field Experience rolls around. For five days, freshmen training to be teachers have the opportunity to discover for themselves what teaching entails. They attend presentations, lesson-planning sessions, and mini-faculty meetings, all to prepare them for the lessons they teach before the week’s end—not only to their peers, but to real grade school students!

Freshman EFE week is excellent preparation for the future and also a wonderful time to build strong bonds of camaraderie with classmates—all while noshing on delicious refreshments during breaks.

(Maybe those rumors about the goodies in faculty lounges are true, after all!)

What Will My Schedule Look Like?

So, you’ve got a general idea of what types of courses you’ll take at MLC—Greek and Hebrew, if you want to be a pastor, Curriculum and Instruction if you want to be a teacher. But let’s get down to brass tacks.

When my dad first decided to become a pastor he had been working for Kohl’s as a technical analyst. Becoming a pastor is quite different from programming computers. Only a few of his original college credits transferred and he found that he would have to take three years of classes at MLC. Then he would continue his education at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary which included one vicar year.

Outside of homework my dad still had a job to help support the family, plus he still tried to come to as many of my and my brother’s school functions as he could. In the past seven years our family has had to move four times because of my dad’s education. Through all of this, my dad has worked very hard and has been very supportive of our family. He gave everything he had to pursue the path the Lord had set out before him. . . . My dad has shown great enthusiasm for the Word. Sometimes on the way home from school he talks about his classes that day, and he gets so excited when he tells me the new things he has learned. . . . My dad has shown me that I don’t have to be afraid, because even though I may not feel talented enough or special enough to be used as God’s teaching instrument, if I work for the Lord with all my heart, God will bless my efforts.

Who has been the most influential person on my road to ministry?

Heather Holm, Shoreland LHS: “My Grandpa” . . . I thought, “How cool is it that all these people are listening to my grandpa? How cool is it that God picked him to tell them about Jesus?”

Katelynn Zemke, Shoreland LHS: “My Teacher, Miss Melissa Leslie” . . . Because of her, I see how much a teacher can influence a child’s life.

Corrine Meshke, Kettle Moraine LHS: “My Friend, Brad Gurgel” . . . He is the one God chose to use to open my heart. I will always look to him with fondness as a major catalyst in my life.

Sarah Sternaman, Shoreland LHS: “My English Teacher, Mr. Bruce Heckmann” . . . Mr. Heckmann has a certain way of teaching that actually makes me think about what I’m learning. Many of my classes never really seem to take on a deeper meaning that actually applies to life. For English class, that is not the case.

MLC graduate Jessica Tess ’05 talks about her

Mission Work in Milwaukee sinned too much and they did not attend church.

As I looked at these 30 faces looking back at me, I was glad that I had the whole year to get to know them and learn about their hurts, fears, and dreams.

During my junior year, I went on a trip with about 10 other students and two professors to learn more about the mission field in Milwaukee. I fell in love with the workers, the students, and the purpose.

After graduation, God called me to teach seventh grade at HOPE Middle School—just blocks away from the area I visited junior year.

I remember my first day of teaching (not that it was that long ago) and the first devotion I gave.

Literally, everyone in the class told me that they could never be a Christian because they had

Although I once thought that everyone in America knew the basic story of Jesus, I found that one of my own students was among the many people who go unnoticed and never hear the gospel. He came in to school knowing nothing, and I mean nothing, about Jesus. Now, he loves Word of God class.

These students are changing, not because of my words or message, but because of Christ’s words and message. It is not a message that if you believe, your life will be better and everything will go right; it is a message of true forgiveness from a true Savior.

Is Urban Ministry for You? Jessica’s junior-year field trip is part of MLC’s Urban Ministry Focus, a series of field trips and internships that lets students experience firsthand the joys and challenges of urban ministry. If you’re like Jessica, you’ll find these experiences both educational and inspiring. And maybe you’ll be one of the graduates who receive calls to urban areas like Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Chicago, Denver, Miami, and Phoenix.

“I can’t be a pastor—I want to play the guitar!”

It’s a common mistake—that if you study to be a pastor or teacher, you’ll never get to do the other things you like: play guitar, make art, coach Little League. The truth is, the most effective called workers don’t read Luther’s Works all day. They have hobbies like everyone else, and sometimes they even integrate them into their ministries.

A teacher has a photography unit in her classroom every spring. A pastor coaches city football in the fall (which has led to a lot of spiritual conversations with nonmembers, by the way). A staff minister publicly exhibits his paintings. One called worker

plays drums in a touring rock band, and another builds furniture in her basement.

If you enter the ministry, it doesn’t mean giving up part of yourself. It means integrating all of you into a way of life that really makes a difference.

As Kent Reeder (Luther Prep) prepares for the pastoral ministry at MLC, he also plays and teaches guitar, writes music, produces dramas, acts, builds sets, and is a member of various committees and boards on campus.

Teach Abroad!

I n t e r n at i o n a l T e a c h i n g O p p o r t u n i t i e s You’ve been hearing a lot about MLC graduates teaching abroad—about 50 are overseas right now!—but you wonder how it works. Are these calls? Can you pick where you want to go? What will you do? Here’s the 411 on ITO. How does ITO work? MLC finds international schools that are good spots for our grads—some made known to us by WELS Kingdom Workers— and then publicizes the openings. You apply for the one you want.

all over the world apply for them. The good news is that graduating from MLC is to your advantage; MLC has a great reputation with these schools, and they want to hire our graduates. In fact, many of them come to us, requesting our grads.

Where are these schools? Mexico, Brazil, Japan, Dominican Republic, Czech Republic, Malawi, Colombia, Thailand, and Chile are the countries we’re working in now, but we’re adding more every year.

What would I teach? You might teach preschool in Thailand, high school in South Korea, adult English students in Colombia, or seminary students in Czech. (Remember—you can pick which job to apply for.) Maybe you’ll teach God’s Word right in your classroom; maybe you won’t be allowed to do that. Either way, you’ll probably assist local missionaries and do friendship evangelism in your school and your neighborhood.

Are these calls? No. These are teaching positions that you pursue before making yourself available for a call. You defer, or put off, your assignment, and we’re happy to wait for you, because we know you’ll be an even better teacher and minister of the gospel when you come back. (Hope School in Japan is a called position—the only exception.)

Is it safe? Before we even post an opening at an international school, MLC faculty members visit the site to make sure that our grads will be physically safe, spiritually fed, and able to succeed as teachers. (Tell your parents it’ll be okay.)

Am I guaranteed a spot? Not necessarily. You need to apply for the jobs, the same way others

MLC Student on ESPN

MLC fifth-year senior Jeff Dolan (Minnesota Valley LHS) appeared in ESPN’s Human Bracket during NCAA March Madness. In the online video clip “The Human Bracket Arrives in Atlanta,” Dolan, apparently an avid Florida fan, did his best Gator-chop for the world to see. We sent ESPN executives a tape of the MLC “Kangaroo Song,” but they have not as yet responded.
