Variety is the Spice of Ministry God’s Blessings, Pastor Dolan!

The old adage says variety is the spice of life. In some cases this is true. Ice cream would only be vanilla if it weren’t for Baskin-Robbins’ 31 flavors. The wardrobe of the day would be matching beige shirts and pants if it weren’t for Nike, Hollister, Gap, and Aeropostale. You could look forward to driving the old four-door sedan if it weren’t for Jeeps, SUVs, sports cars, trucks, and cycles. Variety can and does spice up one’s life.

There’s also variety in the public ministry. Here at Martin Luther College we prepare students for three types of ministry: pastoral, educational, and staff ministry. Within the educational ministry you can study for early childhood, elementary, or secondary ed. Within each of these programs, you have more choices: nine specialty areas in elementary ed and eight majors in secondary ed. In pastoral studies you can choose from three non-Biblical languages: Spanish, German, or Latin.

This variety gives you an exciting program to follow as you study for the public ministry.

There’s variety not only in ministry preparation, but also in the ministry opportunities themselves. Check out what 55 of our students did this summer on page 6. Explore ministry opportunities in the city and overseas on page 12. And take a glance at all the different ways our 2006 graduates are serving right now on page 13. I think you’ll be surprised to find out how exciting ministry is for our students. And just think—you can be part of this excitement should you choose to study for the public ministry here at Martin Luther College.

But just as all 31 flavors of Baskin-Robbins are one thing—ice cream—so the different forms of ministry are based on one thing: the message that Jesus Christ is the way to heaven. This is what you will teach and preach: Christ crucified and what this means to children and adults alike.

For seven years high school students like you have received encouragement and inspiration from Pastor John Dolan, MLC Admissions Director for Pastoral Ministry. Now God has led Pastor Dolan to accept a call to Christ Lutheran Church, Eden Prairie, MN. We’re grateful for Pastor Dolan’s service to MLC, and we’ll miss him, but we wish him God’s richest blessings in his new ministry.

I

never really considered being a teacher until I was at my second college. I woke up one morning and decided to transfer to MLC. Events up until that day, as well as the training I’m getting at Martin Luther College now, have all been fundamental in my preparation for the ministry.

One thing that has had the most effect on my life and my perspective was a car accident that left me paralyzed. I was 14 years old, buckled up in the backseat of a friend’s car. We were on a country road, coming up a hill. At the top, a car was stalled directly in front of us. In order not to hit the car and its two passengers, our driver swerved, and we hit a tree and a culvert. I was unconscious, taken out of the car with the Jaws of Life, and rushed to the emergency room. My dad came in as I lay on the gurney, the only thing holding me together being my skin. My spine was completely severed. I was in two pieces.

I remember a light being shined into my eyes and somebody’s fingers taking out my contacts.

I remember screaming out in pain when the paramedics were trying to lift me off the gurney.

Waking up in the ICU, I was forced to acknowledge the fact that I was a little freshman in high school who was paralyzed. I have to be in a wheelchair the rest of my life. This can’t be real.

But real it was, and reality proved hard to swallow.

After three weeks of intensive care, I was sent to another hospital for rehab. My life was a mixture of white hospital walls, solitude, and lessons on how to do things like go to the bathroom and get into a bed. I got to go home after three months.

I thought about basketball. I thought about how boys would never think that I was pretty. I thought about how I would never be able to run again, or take my little sister through the woods by our house. No more ice-skating, no more rollerblading.

I gave my bike to my older sister; my skis were sold in a garage sale. All my friends’ houses had stairs; all the doorways in my own home were too narrow for my wheelchair. So many things I had once taken for granted became merely a memory.

Things like pressure sores, swollen feet, and back pain now required my attention.

A New Perspective The inspirational true story of MLC student Carrie Bade, who was paralyzed in a car accident at age 14.

A strap they had forgotten to unfasten was holding me down, and every time they tried to lift me, pain engulfed my entire body.

I cried—only in private of course. I thought it best to hide my depression.

I survived high school and anticipated college, where I red-shirted with the University of Illinois women’s wheelchair basketball team. I learned a lot that first semester of my college career. I felt isolated, with family and friends a state away.

Most of the girls on my team had no desire to get to know me. My days were filled with basketball practice, weightlifting, and classes. My schedule and my shyness hindered opportunities to form new friendships. My teammates expected me to pump up their basketballs, fill their water bottles, M a r t i n L u t h e r C o ll e g e

and wash their jerseys. This was typical for a rookie, which is what I was. I felt quite inferior to these girls and did all I could to work hard in practice, run their errands, and try to maintain a positive attitude.

It overwhelmed, it hurt. I felt judged. I felt like a waste of space. I soaked my sheets with tears, trying to cry quietly so that my roommate wouldn’t hear me. It eventually drained my endurance, and I left Illinois with a weary disposition.

But I was not withheld from the care and infinite wisdom of One so much wiser than I. He used these trials for my benefit. What I gained was a new perspective.

This made it worth every sleepless night, every tear, and every blow to my silly pride. From these experiences, I learned to accept how differently I look now than I used to. I learned how to do the little things like climbing up on my wash machine so that I could reach the dryer stacked on top of it.

I learned how to maneuver a shopping cart while simultaneously pushing my own chair and talking on my cell phone. I learned the perfect technique

obvious opportunities lie in all the courses we take in order to graduate. The firsthand teaching experiences in different classrooms of both private schools and public schools have opened my eyes to so many aspects of teaching that a textbook could never quite relate. Being surrounded by people of the same faith has brought the blessing of deep friendship into my life.

The inner struggles, the constant trials, however, do remain. But I cannot deny that these too are lessons from the Lord in which I will come out better prepared. Seeing my brother struggle with bipolar disorder, cutting, and anxiety attacks, seeing alcoholism and depression scar my family, seeing my mother parent on her own because my father’s job requires his absence, adapting to my physical disability, and coping with my inner faults all have proved to equip me with a caring heart. God knows that effective witnessing takes an open mind and a life of lessons.

He led me to a college where education revolves around his Word, and he blessed me with supportive friends.

of holding my grocery bags under my chin so that I could do a wheelie off the curb to get to my car.

Most importantly, I learned what a blessing prayer and the knowledge of a Savior is.

From Illinois, I transferred to a university in Michigan. One semester there left me seeking a change, and I woke up with the thought of MLC on my brain. My time at Martin Luther College has proved to be yet another opportunity to grow in my ability to serve in the fulltime ministry. The w w w.mlc-wels.edu

I feel so grateful to say in this moment how much God has blessed me with a life full of learning experiences. God has allowed an insignificant human being like me to serve as his personal witness. Every single one of you has had just as many or more experiences in your own lives that have prepared you to better serve our Lord.

If we keep this in mind, no matter how pressing our trials become, we can bear them with a light heart.

Country and Serving the Church Seeing the

Sometimes the hardest part is waiting. That’s true of MLC students too—they can’t wait to graduate and get busy with the gospel. So we don’t make them wait. While they’re still training for ministry here, we give them opportunities to do ministry all over the country—and the world—through our Daylight program.

California, Florida, Colorado, Tennessee, New York, Georgia, Canada—these were just some of the destinations of 55 MLC students participating in Daylight this summer.

Denver MLC Athletic Director Jim Unke and three students—Aaron Schultz (St. Croix LHS), Brian Gephardt (Michigan LHS), and Emily Thomas (Rocky Mountain LHS)—assisted at the Rocky Mountain LHS basketball camp, coaching 51 kids, one third of them from outside the church. “The MLC students did an outstanding job with the kids at camp,” said Pastor Earle Treptow of Zion, Denver. “It was obvious that they not only enjoy basketball, but particularly enjoy being around young people.”

“We’ve gone down there four years,” said Professor Unke, “and every year our kids love it. We do the basketball camp, and we go down to the Spanish Center in the inner city and do outreach there.

This year we also canvassed for Crown of Life, a new congregation in the area.”

“We asked the TCW team to do triple duty,” he said. “The mornings were spent helping in the VBS classrooms.

After lunch part of the team helped with our sports camp, while the Joel Davidson and Amanda Yets give some undivided other half planned the canvassing attention to a little guy at VBS at Gethsemane, strategy. The congregation thanked the MLC students by treating them to horseback riding, tickets to a show (Oklahoma! of course), and a tour of the Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial.

West Palm Beach Sophomores Jonathan Weber (Michigan LHS), Sarah Koester (Michigan LHS), and Laura Merklinger (Heritage High-Littleton, Colorado), along with University of Minnesota student Melissa Gierach (Winnebago Lutheran Academy), spent two great weeks in West Palm Beach, Florida, assisting Pastor Jon Enter with vacation Bible school at Hope Lutheran Church. The first week’s canvassing paid off when 72 kids showed up for VBS the second week.

“It was amazing to be with all the kids,” said Jonathan Weber. “You could talk to them about Jesus, and you could see that they were getting it and believing it.” The congregation took the students out every night, including a fan-boating excursion in the Everglades.

From California to Michigan, Wisconsin to Arizona, they came to Martin Luther College and met each other, some on their very first day in August—in the dorm, at the orientation meetings, during the mixers. They slowly got to know each other, sharing their histories and their hopes for the future.

Fourteen girls, including our own Professor Zahrt, became friends in 1994 at Martin Luther College.

And now they’re quite sure they’ll be friends for life.

Back in their college days, they went through everything together.

• The first dates and the big break-ups (Professor Zahrt: “We’d all huddle in a room and swap stories.

Girlfriends are good for that!”)

• The all-nighters at Perkins • The Labor Day swims at Flandrau (Zahrt: “Tons of MLC students would be there, beatin’ the heat.”)

• The long bus trips for volleyball matches • The 11 pm intramural games (Zahrt: “Our team’s name was 4U2NV. Now that I think back, that was sort of cocky.”)

• The trips to Mexican Village in Mankato • The COS dances, Pig Roasts, Winter Carnivals, Homecomings (Zahrt: “So many memories, so little time.”)

• The spring breaks in Arizona and San Francisco • And where to begin with the goofy dorm stuff, most of which is just too crazy to make any sense in a magazine article? (Zahrt: “Very true!

Those are some of the best memories.”)

“We got really close,” says Professor Zahrt.

“Everyone at MLC is going for the same thing, which is different from other colleges. You’re all in it together.”

Fourteen girls and four years of college. Then they blinked, and it was Graduation Day. Fast-forward 12 years. Today they’re teachers at every level: early childhood, elementary, high school, even college. All 14 are married, Professor Zahrt just last July. Ten of the 14 husbands are also in public ministry—teachers, pastors, a staff minister, a chaplain in Germany. They’re proud to count 22 children among them, with three more on the way.

And the friendship remains—through phone calls, emails, a round-robin chain letter (which takes about a year to get through all 14 of them) and face-to-face meetings. “Each year we try to get together, usually with husbands and kids,” says Professor Zahrt. “This year we’re having our first reunion with just the girls. It’ll be our first ‘Fully Chick’ reunion.”

Yes, fourteen girls became friends in 1994 at Martin Luther College. And now they’re quite sure they’ll be friends for life—“life,” Professor Zahrt explains, “being ministry, family . . . and eternity.”

My Summer at the Early Maybe you’re thinking about studying early childhood education, but you’re not sure what that means. Is it just playtime? Is it sit-and-foldyour-hands-at-your-desk time?

It’s neither. Take one step into the MLC Early Childhood Learning Center, and you’ll discover a creative fusion of books and blocks, music and movement, paints and pretend—the kind of learning that’s so fun, the kids forget it’s school.

And sometimes the teachers do too.

This summer, while the MLC professors are teaching workshops around the country and most MLC students are back at home, MLC graduate Rachel Schleusener is working as a teacher and sophomore Leah Pekrul as an assistant teacher at “the Center,” both of them under the supervision of the director, Mrs. Cathy Biedenbender. Here’s a typical day for them and their twelve preschool students in July: 8:30 Story time: Mrs. Biedenbender reads If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and three or four other stories, with other finger plays and songs in between. The kids hear the same stories all week, so by the end, they’re excited to say they can “read” them themselves.

9:00 Work time: Each student decides on a destination and a plan of action: art, blocks,

puppets, the kitchen, the loft. The teachers walk around, encouraging interaction and imaginative thinking. Afterwards, the students explain what they did. “You can really see their minds working,” Rachel says, “the little things they say, the way their imagination just flows.”

10:00 Snack: Oranges, graham crackers, and apple juice 10:30 Movement and Music for Lemons and Limes: Rachel takes some students—the “Limes”—out to the obstacle course. The teachers know it’s gross motor skills work; the kids just know it’s a blast. Meanwhile, Mrs. Biedenbender teaches the new song for the week to the “Lemons.” They sing some of their other favorites too—“Four in the Boat” and “My God Is So Great”—and beat out rhythms with their sticks and drums.

11:00 Bible Story time: Rachel tells “Jonah and the Big Fish” and helps the kids memorize this week’s passage: “Go and make disciples of all nations.” This is a very important time of the day.

11:20 Small Group Experiences: Mrs. Biedenbender introduces the curricular activity.

Today they get marshmallows and toothpicks, and they choose what to do with them. The result: towers and flowers, animals and alphabet letters—anything is possible!

Noon Lunch: Ham, mashed potatoes, green beans, applesauce. But first a prayer: “Our hands we fold, our heads we bow, so we can talk to God right now. Dear Jesus, thank you for our food and drink. Amen.”

1:00 Rest time: The students find their cots and the naptime “friends” they brought from home— stuffed animals, favorite blankets or pillows. Then they all sing “Now the Light Has Gone Away” as the lights go down.

The Limes “read” and sing along as Leah presents a “predictable book,” Over in the Meadow.

3:45 Group discussion: Leah and Rachel lead a discussion at this time, often on animals, which the kids love. Today they talk about animals with stripes, using the pictures in a magazine—Your Big Backyard—as a reference.

4:00 Play and Pick-up Time: The playground gets a serious workout as the kids run and climb while waiting for their parents to pick them up. It’s been another great day at the Center!

2:30 Snacks and Quiet Play: The lights slowly come up, and one by one the kids awake, have some juice, and quietly draw, paint, cut out sea animals, make up little stories with Lego people, or play with blocks—sorting, connecting, counting, making long lines and tall towers. “I love watching them get up from their naps,” says Leah, “those cute, sleepy little kids wandering over to us.”

Set Your Sights on the City This summer some MLC 2006 graduates made drastic moves. From their small towns and suburbs, they packed up and headed to places with a much higher percentage of pavement and people: places like Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and Chicago.

Does teaching in a large, cosmopolitan city sound exciting? MLC’s Urban Ministry Program may be just what you’re looking for. Through field trips and field experiences, you can learn how ministry in an urban setting may be different from the environment you grew up in. But you’ll also learn how all kids, no matter where they live, have the same needs.

Last April, 15 MLC students traveled to Lutheran elementary schools in Milwaukee—St. Marcus, Risen

Savior, and Garden Homes—and to The Hope School, a Lutheran high school on Dr. Martin Luther King Drive. They observed, took notes, taught lessons, and talked to teachers and administrators about the unique challenges and blessings of teaching in urban settings.

“It was eye-opening to see the cultural differences and yet how every student is the same no matter what,” said Anna Kieckhaefer (Luther Prep). “All kids have the same needs—God’s Word, which is the most important thing, and also the basics of life, how to read and write—but you may have to find different ways to meet those needs. A trip like this really opens your eyes and gets your creative juices flowing.”

Set Your Sights Overseas “Go to college. Touch the world.”

Lots of colleges may offer international learning opportunities. MLC offers international teaching opportunities. Sixteen MLC 2006 graduates have chosen to do international service next school year.

They are now in Dominican Republic, Chile, Japan, and Southeast Asia, teaching students age 3 to adult, some teaching religion, some content areas, and some English as a Foreign Language (EFL).

Other MLC grads already serve in these countries, as well as in Colombia and Thailand. And then there are the undergrads who currently teach in Brazil and Mexico. And Czech Republic and Ukraine are already requesting MLC graduates for next school year!

“The opportunities for international teaching are almost endless,” said Pastor John Boeder, director of MLC International Teaching Opportunities. “We marvel at the growing number of places. In fact, people from countries around the world come to us now and ask if we can send students to them.”

Every year Martin Luther College awards more than half a million dollars in merit-based aid. If you are admitted to MLC in the 2007-2008 school year, you may be eligible for one of the following scholarships.

Presidential Scholarship: $2500 to each high school valedictorian (renewable, based on GPA) Merit Finalist Scholarship: $3000 to each Merit Finalist (renewable, based on GPA) Messenger Scholarship: $1500 to each freshman with a high school GPA of 3.75-4.00 or an ACT score of 30 or higher (renewable, based on GPA)

Witness Scholarship: $1000 to each freshman with a high school GPA of 3.50-3.74 or an ACT score of 27 or above (renewable, based on GPA) Ministry Scholarships: $700 to 60 sophomores, juniors, or seniors whose gifts may not show up on a report card (chosen by faculty each year) Leadership Grants: $500 to 25 freshmen who show leadership potential (chosen by admissions counselors, renewable)

Christ has said that he gives “some to be . . . pastors and teachers.” Ask him to help you consider whether you are one of the “some.” Pray that he helps you decide how best to use the gifts he’s given you.
