PURPOSE

In the eighty-one years of its existence, Dr. Martin Luther College has witnessed many changes: in personnel, pion!, end facilities. Yet amid the numerous changes one item has remained unchanged: the purpose of the school's existence. Its one function still is to serve the church, speciAcally the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. It does this by educating such as will adorn the office of the public ministry as pastors and teachers or will labor in the church as consecrated laymen.

Although Dr. Mortin Luther College is presently o combination school, consisting of a preparatory and o college deportment, a separation of the departments is in process, which will ultimately result in the existence of two separate schools. The high school has a triple function. It offers courses preparatory for future ministerial training, one for the preaching ministry and the other for the teaching mi nistry. In addition, it offers a general high-school course.

The college department trains exclusively for the teaching ministry. Its graduates ore specially prepared for the ministry of the Word in our Lutheran day schools.

BASIC EDUCATIONAL PRINCIPLES

Dr. Mortin Luther College, a teacher-training institution of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, exists in fulfillment of educational principles based on the Word of God. These declare that edutation is inse0oroble from religion. They demonstrate that all knowledge in all areas of human thought and endeavor is worthy of inquiry when viewed in the light of human sin and divine grace. They assert that such evaluation of all things is granted alone through the God-revealed Wisdom of the Bible, the God-man Jesus Christ. They affirm that education, a natural function of the Christian home, is in equal measure a concern of the church, to equip the entire person in mind, body, and spirit for time and for eternity.

It therefore behooves the church to prepare teachers imbued with these edu:ational principles. Dr. Martin Luther College serves the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod in that capacity; it has been established and maintained by the Synod to train young men and women qualified for the teaching ministry in the Christian schools of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Sy nod. To be properly qualified requires, first of all, a

conse::rated spirit of love lo Christ an:! the fellowmen which is gained alone through searching the Scriptures, the faithful record of God's will to save all men. In addition, there must be academic competence drawn from a learning experien:e sufficiently brood and deep for acquiring the attitudes and skills. that will meet the high standards of Christion education and Christian respon• sibility to society. This includes familiarity and facility with the techniques and tools of teaching. There should also be willingness to render assistan:e in the worship program of the congregation. Our Lutheran heritage of music in the service of Christian faith emphasizes the need for developing on ability to play and conduct appropriate church music.

In carrying out these objectives, Dr. Mortin Luther College seeks to provide a Christ-centered school atmosphere for spiritual growth. Each day begins

and closes with a period of formal worship. Every academic subject is taught from a bockgrcund of conviction for Christian truth. The total s-:hool experience of the student is guided by the Word of God. Teaching competence is sought through a curriculum which undergirds the courses in professional methods, practice teaching, and applied music with a strong program of study in literature, science, and the arts.

Indispensable to the entire teaching end learning experience at Dr. Mortin Luther College is a thorough foundation in Holy Scripture, in history, and in the heritage of the man of God from whom Dr. Martin Luther College tokes its name. All students are committed to intensive study of the Bible as the only source and norm of absolute truth. From the divine portrayal of sin and grace in Holy Scripture, from the record of God' s continued manifestation of wisdom and love throughout history, and from the theological and liturgical treasures inherited from Martin Luther, students are led to the proper e valuation of human achievement and human failure by which their educational endeavors con contribute most to the Glory of God and the welfare of the in:lividu:il an:! the community, the church and the world. * * * ADMINISTRATION Dr. Martin Luther College is owned end operated by the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. This church body has its headquarters in Milwaukee, Wisconsfo.

The administration of Dr. Martin Luther College the above-mentioned Synod has vested in a board of control, elected by the Synod itself. This board consists of three pastors, two male teachers, and two laymen. The high-school department has its own administrative officers and board of con• trol. {See pages 41 and 42 for details).

Each board of control hos charge of the calling of professors and deans.

With each board rests the final decisicn regarding the curriculum. It ccn make recommendations to the Synod regarding the purchase of property, the erection of buildings, mojor items in the maintenance of property, end the establishment of policies under which the institution is to operate. Generally speaking, it functions as the connecting link between the s:hool and the Syn~d.

The administration of all other matters rests in the hands of the school's faculty. The faculty executes its responsibilities through ifs administrative offices and through committees.

HISTORY

Although Dr. Mortin Luther College is now an educational institution of the Wisconsin Evongelicol lutheron Synod, it was not founded by that body. The actual founder was the German Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Minnesota.

At this Synod's convention, held in New Ulm, Minnesota, in 1883, it was resolved that the Synod open an educational institution of its own. The proposed school was primarily to offer theological training with a view to supplying ministers of the Gospel in the Synod's mission fields. In addition to the ministerial course, the school was also to provide a normal, o classical, and an academic course.

By late foll of 1884 the Synod's resolution was completely executed.

The flrst building (Old Main), erected on a tract of land donated to the Synod, was dedicated on November 9, 1884. Schoolwork had actually begun several weeks before the date of dedication.

The second phase of the school's history dates back to the year 1892. In that year the Minnesota Synod affiliated with the Wisconsin Synod and the Michigan Synod to form the Synod which today is known by the name the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. In consequence of this action, Dr. Martin Luther College become on educotionol institution of the newly organized body.

Because this Synod already hod o college with a pre-theological course (Northwestern College at Watertown, Wisconsin) ond a theological seminary ct Wouwatoso (now of Mequon), Wisconsin, it was resolved to make Dr. Martin Luther College o teacher-training school. To effect this, a three-year preparatory department ond o two-year college course were adopted.

In 1919 the preparatory deportment was expended into o four-year highschool. A third year was added to the college deportment in 1927. Since 1950 this department consists of a four-year course, culminating in the degree of bachelor of science in education.

Through the first twelve years of its existence, training ct Dr. Martin Luther College was open only to mole students. The school hos been co-educational since 1896, when the demandl for women teachers in our Lutheran day schools compelled the Synod to admit women.

A CCREDITATION

Dr. Martin Luther College carries an accredited status by the University of Minnesota. This status permits the transfer of credits earned at Dr. Martin Luther College to the University of Minnesota and to other colleges or universi• ties which honor the recognition accorded Dr. Mortin Luther College by the University of Minnesota. In order to qualify for such transfer, credits must conform la the standards set by the University and must have been earned in courses relevant to the programs to be pursued at the institution to which the transfer is being mode.

BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS

Dr. Mortin Luther College is located in the southwestern part of the city of New Ulm. The campus is approximately one mile distant from the heart of the city.

Traveling by automobile, one con enter New Ulm on U.S. Highways No. 14 and No. 15. The city may also be reached by Greyhound bus service.

Maps found on pages 32 and 62 give detailed information necessary to locate the college.

From o very modest parcel of lend, comprising but four acres, the campus of Dr. Mortin Luther College has grown into a rather sizable campus. At the present time the college grounds consist of approximotely forty-four acres.

The campus is beautifully situated. It lies on o wooded range of hills, overlooking the city of New Ulm. The setting, a veritable park, lends itself admirably for o boarding school.

The lone building of which the school boasted in the years of its infancy is now but one of c complex of structures. Eleven buildings plus ten professor• ages are located on the campus itself.

The original building, now known as Old Main, is $Jill rendering valuable service. It now houses the refedory, kitchen, nurse's office, hospital rooms, and living quarters for some of the instructors. Recently it has also again been called upon to serve in the capacity of a dormitory for women.

Sin::e by far the greater portion of the school's student body is from outside the city of New Ulm, dormitory facilities are naturally a vital part of the campus. Six dormitories are located on the campus. The new four-story women's dormitory will be reedy for occupancy in the foll of 1964.

The institution supplies bedsteads, mattresses, desks, chairs, and bookracks. These items naturally remain college property. Studenfa will exercise care in the use of these as well as all other college properties. Students must provide themselves with the necessary bed-clothes, mattress pads, towels, desk lamps, and all pers~mal items. The fire ordinarce discourages students from bringing electrical appliances such as toasters, etc.

Housed in the various buildings is equipment of diverse kinds, both for the executing of the school's specialized type of training and for c well rounded school life for the students.

The library is situated on the first floor of the Administration Building. At present the- library consists of 15,500 volumes.

Because the graduates of Dr. Martin Luther College ordinarily are expected to serve cs organists and choir directors in the congregations which they serve, the school offers the necessary facilities for a well- balanced music course. The addition of a second music hell, known cs the Music Center, has greatly expanded both the room cs well as the equipment necessary for choral end instrumental instruction and work. Henceforth there will be approximately sixteen organs (one electronic) and thirty-nine pianos available for lessons ond practice.

In connection with the- library, there is a special m usic library. This contains approximately 1000 volumes, featuring works on church music and on vocal and instrumental training. l aboratories, for use in connection with courses in chemistry and physics, ore found on the second floor of the Administration Building. Both laboratories are equipped with modern apparatus and facilities.

Three indoor areas are provided for recreational activities for those who are- sports-minded. The largest of these areas, the gymnasium, used for varsity sports end physical education, is located in the Administration Building.

Two smaller re<:reotion areas, with some gymnasium equipment, are found in the Men's Dormitory and in Centennial Hall, a dormitory for women. A new gymnasium-student union-refectory buidling is in the planning stage.

The school's athletic field offers Ane opportunity for outdoor activities of varied types. In addition to a football gridiron, a baseball diamond and several softball fie lds, there ore-six hard-surfaced tennis courts.

Since the college curriculum demands p ractice teaching of all its graduates, arrangements have been made with the local St. Poul's Lutheran School

and with other cooperating schools to use some of their facilities for the operation of a practice school. Practice teaching is done under the supervision of the school's education deportment. St. Paul's Lutheran School is located opproitimately one mile from the college campus.

POLICIES

In the interest of ell con~ernad, certain policies hove been e stablished, aimed at a proper administration of the institution and a fitting con::ern for the students and their parents. The policies here listed ore of a general nature.

Others, specifically related to certain divisions of the school, will be found elsewhere in the catalog and in the Student Guide.

It is understood that the Word of God is to rule supreme at Dr. Mortin Luther College and that the discipline of the school is to be shaped in accordance with this norm. Bearing this in mind, parents should not attempt to eit~e-their children from conforming to any of the rules of the institution.

Regular attendance ct the services and Holy Communion in the local St. John's Lutheran Church or St. Poul's Lutheran Church is required of all students. Dormitory residents who ore unable to attend services must furnish satisfactory excuse to the person in charge of their dormitory.

Students ore also e xpected to be present for the evening devotions conducte d at their respective dormitories. These devotions precede the supervised study periods held in the various dormitories.

The school frowm upon late registration. Late registrants will be assessed one dollar per day for every day late. No student will be permitted to register later then three weeks ofter the opening of a semester.

Deserving of special attention is the matter of punctuality ct the beginâ&#x20AC;˘ ning of each term. Students will arrange their affairs so that they may conform with all the dotes end hours established on pages 4 end 5 of this catalog.

Tardiness may have disastrous results for the student.

Leaving the confines of the city of New Ulm is permissible only by the consent of the proper authorities.

After vacatiom, dormitory residents must be on the campus by 10:00 p.m., on the night before classes resume.

Absences from the school, necessitating interruption of schoolwork, will be permitted only upon request written by parent or guardian and granted by the President or the Principal.

Expulsion from a class shell be recorded as an absence, eitcuse not ocâ&#x20AC;˘ cepted. Two expulsions from a class period of any one subject will seriously endanyer the student's successful completion of that subject.

Beginning with the school year 1964-1965, the Professional Semester will be inaugurated at Dr. Mortin Luther College. According to this system, students of the Senior Closs will spend one half semester in cooperating schools acquiring practical teaching experience through observation and actual teaching. The other half of the Professional Semester students will devote especially to designated professional courses. (For additional information confer pages 34 and 35).

Substitute teaching (caused by emergencies in our Lutheran day school.s) on the port of students will not be permitted without the knowledge and full consent of the faculty. As a rule, no student will be excused from classes more then two weeks for su~h substitute teaching. Under no circumstar.ces will students of the high-school deportment get permission for such o step. All inquiries regarding substitute teaching are to be mode to the president of the school .

Students intending to te ach in vacation Bible schools or s ummer scho ols should not figure on begiMing such work before the close of the school year.

All mail addressed lo dormitory residents must pass through the hands of the deon or his assistants. This rule is necessary in order to gcard against the influence of unscrupulous persons and concerns who attempt to reach students with their demoralizing letters end printed matter. Parents and guardians, in enrolling pupils at this institution, automatically give their consent to this rule.

On or off-campus college students seeking pe rmiss ion to operate automobiles shall request the some of the Dean of Students ct least two weeks beâ&#x20AC;˘ fore the automobile is brought to the campus. Students granted such permission ore expected to hove each semester's school expenses paid in advance.

Accordingly, on advance deposit of $275.00 shall be remitted to the Deon of Students together with the request for automobile privileges. This deposit shall be applied to the student's various accounts upon his arrival at the college. An automobile fee of $5.00 is payable by all college students who own and-or operate automobiles ct Dr. Martin Luther College. Certain other requirements must be met. The letter from the Deon will list such particulars.

Since Dr. Martin Luther College prepares people who are to work in the vineyard of the Lord and therefore expects that su:h studer.ts have ample time to give full attention to their studies, it deems it inadvisable to admit to its regular sess ions those who ore married.

No student or student groups, engaged in musical, athletic, or other oc:th¡ities, may appear in public performances or in any way represent the school or use the name of the school to further their own person::il ambitions without the cons-ent and full approval of the faculty.

It hos been found by experien~e that students, boa rding with priva te families, hove difficulty maintaining a regular and necessary routine. Permission for suc:h living arrangements is, therefore, rarely granted. When it is, the instiMion assumes no responsibility for the student involved, except during the time he attends classes.

ROUTINE School life, particularly at a boarding school, ~eces)itates a rather riaid routine. Students ore, therefore, expected to observe the school's doily program as we!I as :he schedule in effect in the dormitory in which they happen to have residence.

An application blank for enrollment at Dr. Mortin Luther College, for highschool as well as college students, may be found on the end sheet of this catalog. This form is also used by foreign students since Dr. Martin Luther College is approved for attendance of non immigrant foreign students under the Immigration and Nationality Act. Detailed information for admission into the college deportment will be found on page 24, for admission into the hig1h schooldeportment on page 44.

In general, the following is required of all students seeking admission into the institution. A testimonial of good moral character must accompany the application. An honorable dismissal from another synodical institution will be considered sufficient testimonial in the case of those coming from such schools.

With his letter of acceptance the student will receive a form to be filled out by his family physician. This must be submitted to the President at least a week before registration. No one will be accepted as a regular member until the above-mentioned testimonials and reports are submitted.

All college freshmen ore required to have written the test of the American College Testing Program, commonly called the ACT test. Information about this test is given to all high school seniors through the school which they are attending. These tests ore usually administered at testing centers in November, February, and April.

It is advisable for oil students, compulsory for new students, that upon arrival on the campus they first present themselves for registration.

No student will be admitted to a class without first having registered.

The dormitories will be open to students one day before school-opening.

COUNSELING Every division of a class hos assigned to it a faculty member who acts a~ its doss advisor. Each student is encouraged to consult with his advisor about his academic work and problems. The student's personal problems moy also be discussed with him, as well as with the Dean of Students and the housemothers of the student's dormitory. For counseling in spiritual matters, student~ are asked to consult with the Dean of Students, who is the pastoral counselor for the student body.

ORIENTATION An orientation program is conducted during the first week of each new school year. The purpose of the program is to give information about student life and student responsibilities at Dr. Martin Luther College. All members of the freshman class in both college and high school, and all new students in other college and high school classes, ore invited to participate in this program.

HEALTH SERVICES Each student's health history, which he is required to send following his acceptance, is on flle. At the time of registration, he pays a medical fee which is used to cover incidental doctor bills and other medical needs throughout the year. This includes medical coverage for those who engage in any sports or in any on-or off-campus activities having faculty sanction. The maximum payment for any given case will be S100.00. Extra consideration is given to thoseengaged in the interscholastic program. For extended coverage, the college offers a voluntary group health insurance program with Blue Cross.

CONCERTS, DRAMATICS, AND LECTURES The academic community of the college presents ample cultural, educational, and recreational e vents during the school year. Operettas and dramas of larger proportions are presented in alternate years. Other shorter pro• ductions ore presented during the year, including serious one-act productions and lighter drama by the Senior High School Class.

Numerous musical events toke place on the campus during the year: re• citols by staff members, solo performances by advanced students in organ and piano, and concerts and worship participation by the several choral organiza• lions. From time to time outstanding artists perform at the college.

In addition to frequent displays by various academic deportments, the college sponsors on annual series of lectures from the Deportment of Concerts and Lectures, University of Minnesota. These ore often in the area of science, social studies, and recreation.

The City of New Ulm offers the Community Concert Series annually at special rotes to students. This series has included some of the world's leading musical talent. Local high schools present musical and dramatic performances which students may attend.

Mankato State College, Gustavus College, and colleges in the Twin Cities the University of Minnesota, the Minneapolis Symphony, the Walker Art Center, and the annual visit of the Metropclitan Opera Company, offer excellent cultural opportunities of which students in the upper classes may avail themselves.

STUDENT AIDS Scholarships The Aid Association for Lutherans of Appleton, Wisconsin, annually makes the sum of $1500.00 available for scholarships. These scholarships may be granted only to students of the college deportment and are awarded at the end of the flrst semester. The awarding of these scholarships is done by the faculty on the basis of scholarship, citizenship, and need.

The interest earned by the Neubert Scholarship Fund and the Boock Scholarship Fund is also used for deserving students who need financial assistance.

Through the Mr. and Mrs. Paul Schwan Scholarship Fund a sum of $1200 is annually made available to college as well as high school students who ore pre paring themselves for work in the church.

A scholarship of $250 mode available to some student aMuolly by the Dr. Mortin Luther College Ladies Auxiliary is to be awarded according to the judgment of the Scholarship Committee.

Since the awarding of scholarships is entirely at the discretion of the faculty, the school does not follow the practice of accepting applications for a scholarship.

By resolution of the Synod, a Wisconsin Synod Scholarship Program hos been established as an aid for both men and women students preparing themselves for full-time church work. This scholarship fund is under the supervision of the Synod's Advisory Committee on Education. Further information on the availability of such scholarship grants should be obtained either from the local pastor or President of the school.

Student Employment Off-campus employment which involves the use of a regular study period is forbidden to oil high school students and college freshmen. Any student who works off campus during study periods must maintain a 1.000 overage and each student desiring to work off campus during study hours must obtain a work permit from the head of his respective dormitory.

ASSIGNMENT TO CHURCH WORK Upon completion of the course of study, students ore graduated as ready for os.signment to church work.

The Committee on Assignment of Calls consisting of all the presiding officers of the districts of the Wisconsin Ev. Lutheran Synod determines the place of work as parochial school teache rs for the graduates of Dr. Mortin Luther College. STUDENT COUNCIL

The Student Council exists to provide opportunity for self-expression, for exercise of initiative, end for the development of c sense of responsibility toward the general welfare of the school. Membership is comprised of two representatives from each class, one mole end one female. Regular meetings ere held in which the responsibility for planning the various student activities receives prominent recognition on the agenda.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

In addition to the activities demanded by the various courses, participation in various extrc..curricular activities renders possible for all students en interesting and pleasant school life.

Participation in most of these activities is ct the students' option. Some activities come by way of faculty appointment. All activities and organizations ere directly or indirectly under the supervision of the faculty.

ORGANIZATIONS

Because music must ploy a rather prominent pert in the life of Dr. Martin Luther College's graduates, ample opportunity for edrccurriculcr activities in this field is offered. Opportunity for singing is provided by the Aeolian Singers and the Marlut Singers, organizations for women and men, respectively. The two bands, College Band end Second Band, ere open to such who ere interested in instrumental music. A pep bcr:id furnishes music for football and basketball games.

Students interested in dramatics have occasion to cultivate their talents by means of the Luther Literary league. Open to high school seniors also is participation in the Senior Class Play. Serving on the staffs of the school paper, the D.M.l.C.Messenger, and the school's annual, The Excelsior, provides students with opportunity for literary self-expression.

A philatelic society and a science club, known as the Phlogistons, hove been organized for those interested in these fields.

STUDENT UNION

The Student Unio n affords students a splendid opportunity for sociability and entertainment. Facilities are offered here for various types of entertainment. A canteen is operoted in connection with the student union. Temporarily the student union is housed in the basement of the old music hall. A new Student Union is presently in the planning stage.

ATHLETICS

Both men and women with a bent toward athletics find ample opportunity to participate in sports of various types. School-sponsored intramural programs are arranged in season for any number of sports. Inter-collegiate athletic competition, both for the high school and the college, is open to such as excel in sports. At present, interscholastic competition iscarried on in basketball, baseball, football, tennis, track, and golf. The college holds membership in the Southern Minnesota Junior College Conference and in the Central Minnesota Baseball Conference. In football, the high school competes in the Red Rock Conference and in the Tri-Volley Conference in basketball and baseâ&#x20AC;˘ boll.

BASIC CURRICULUM

Since Dr. Mortin Luther College hos been established and is maintained for the purpose of training ministers of religion to serve os teachers in our Lutheran parochial schools and as organists and choir directors in our Lutheran churches, it offers one basic curriculum.

This curriculum is set up to provide the student with on adequately brood general education during his first two years of study. For his third and fourth years, intensive work in the fleld of education is added to continued work in general education.

Students who satisfactorily complete the four years of college work become eligible to receive the degree of bachelor of science in education. Women students who elect to toke the three-year course in preference to the regular course will be granted a three-year diploma upon satisfactory comp letion of tha t course. Discontinuance of the present three-year program will, however, begin with the entering freshman class of 1964 and 1965. Women students of the freshman class entering in the foll of 1964 who desire to enroll in the three-year program will be required to toke also two three-credit courses o ffered in our summer schools of 1966 and 1967, for which courses the prerequisites will hove been met by the time of enrollment. In 1965 freshmen enrollees of the three-year program are required to attend three successive summer sessions at Dr. Martin Luther College {1966-1968). Freshmen entering in 1966 con enroll only in the four-year program.

In response to the Synodical resolution of November 9, 1962, to establish a beginning ucondary education program ot Dr. Mortin Luther College, the various deportments ore working out major and minor sequences in their areas, to meet requirements and put the program into operation.

All students enrolled in courses preparatory for active service in the church, either as pastors or teachers, ore clossifled as divinity students.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

Although the college discriminates against no one who is in sympathy with its objective, it must give primary consideration to those students, who, as members of the church, support the school, and must give preferen:e to those who intend to prepare themselves for the teaching ministry.

Before a prospective student con expect any consideration to be given his application, he must submit to the president a testimony of his good moral character signed by his pastor and o certiflcote of good health signed by his physician.

To be eligible for admission to the college deportment, o high school graduate must hove hod c cumulative grade overage of not less than C-minus.

Experience hos shown that the bulk of o student's high-school work should lie within certain flelds if he expects to prepare himself for the teaching ministry. For that reason the prospective student must hove ter. or more credits in the flelds of language, the social studies, scien:e, end mathematics.

Transfer students are welcomed, provided they meet the general requirements for admission. Their credits having o quality of C or better will be accepted with the grade point value of 1.000. Credits of D quality will be cc-

cepted provisionally. If the student, after one year's residence, hos on overâ&#x20AC;˘ age of 1.000 in the work done during that year, the D credit will be accepted at its face value (credit, but no grade points).

Summer school students coming with D's on transcripts of credits from other schools must, if they wish to receive credits for courses with D-grodes, maintain a grade-point average of 1.500 during the first three sessions of attendance. If the individual is eligible for graduation with fewer than three sessions' work, he must still maintain the average required above.

Although not required, it is nevertheless desirable that students entering our college department be able to ploy at least third-grade music.

Application for admission should be mode well in advance of the openâ&#x20AC;˘ ing of the school term. Applications with trons.cripts of credits already acquired in some other institution must be sent to the President, to whom also all new students, ofter they hove registered, should present themselves. For the applicant's convenience, a blank hos been provided at the end of the catalog.

REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATION Four-year Curriculum:

To be eligible for graduation with a degree of bachelor of science in education, the student must meet the following requirements: A. Sin::e Dr. Martin Luther College is preparing candidates for the teaching ministry, it is self-evident that it places strong emphasis on the troining in religion. The student must poss all courses in religion.

Since the teacher generally is reqcired to serve as organist in the congregation, he is expected to pursue the course of study in instrumental music outlined on page 37.

In addition to meeting the requirements of religion and instrumental music, the student must earn a total of one hundred twenty-eight (128) semester hours of credit.* * B. Among these one hundred twenty-eight (128) semester hours of credit he must have the following in the fields of study listed: Education 35tf Mathematics 6 English 21 Science and Geography 9 12 Social Studies 27 Fine Arts C. The student must hove a minimum average of C in the total number of courses token during his college years.

D. Each student must also acquire credit in four semesters of physical education.

E. A student must be a "student in good stonding"t in the semester before graduation to be eligible for his degree or diploma.

Note: A stude nt who hos interrupted his studies at Dr. Martin L11ther College for five years may not be a candidate for a degree or a diploma on the basis of the catalog under which first he entered, but he will be expected tomeet the requirements of the catalog for the year in which he reenters.

GRADING SYSTEM The grading system used in the college is as follows: A , excellent (100-93); B, good (92-85); C, fair (84-77); D, poor (76-70); F, failure (69- ); I, incomplete.

The grade D is counted as credit in semester hours. It does not, however, carry any grade points, but the grade points from other subjects may balance the grade point deficiency of a D. If a student desires grade points for a course in which he received a D, he must repeat the course.

The grade F necessitates the repetition of the course for credit and for grade points. Although a student may get on F in a course, he may be eligible for graduation if he hos met the requirements.

The grade I indicates that a student, for reasons satisfactory to the instructor in charge, has been unable to complete the work of the course. This grade is given only when the work already done has been of acceptable q11ality. The student receiving the grade I will be given an opportunity to complete such a course according to stipulations laid down by the instructor in charge. Grode points will be granted on the basis of the grade earned ofter the I has been removed.

GRADE POINTS A grade point system is used as a convenient method of determining whether a student hos done work of C overage.

Grade points ore g ranted on the following basis: Grade A-3 grade points per semester hour (3 times the m.mber of semester hours).

Grode B-2 grade points per semester hour (twice the number of semester hours).

Grode C-1 grade point per semester hour (the same number as semester hours).

Grade 0 -No grade points.

Grade F-No grade points.

Grode I-No grade points until the work is completed lo the satisfaction of the instructor.

A student's average is expressed by the ratio between the number of semester hours taken and the number of grade points earned. This ratio is determined by dividing the total number of grade points earned by the total ntJmber of semester hours token. A student must hove o minimum grade point ratio of 1.000 lo be eligible for graduation.

An unexcused absence shall deduct one-half grade point from the student's tot a I. An unexcused absence on the day before o vocation or on the first day after a vocation shall carry double penalty.

A student on "strict probation" will be ineligible to participate in any extra-curricular activity.

A student on " strict probation" will have his privileges sharply curtailed.

Evening and week-end permissions will be restricted. He also will not be permitted to work in town.

The classification from semester to semester will in no way change or abrogate any of the requirements for gradi:ction.

Then !he student learns to understand the important forms of various ages: Classic, Renaissance, Baroque, Contemporary. The instructional approach is entirely through the music itself. A record library and modern electronic equipment facilitate the learning process.

Theory of Music 3 credits The contrapuntal harmonic technique of the 18th Century. The course begins with a brief review of scales, intervals, and triads. It takes up problems in modulation through analysis of hymns and penetrates into fundamental triads and their inversions through partwriting and keyboard work.

Theory of Music (Elective) 3 credits The study of the contrapuntal harmonic technique of the 18th Century continues with the non-ha rmonic tones and the seventh chords. Keyboard work continues and im:ludes drill in common chord modulation. Integrated with this study is the theory and practice of harmonizing a chorale.

Students prepare seven chorales in major and minor modes.

Use of the Organ and of Church Music 2 credits This course seeks to develop the evangelical principles involved in the practice of sacred music in the Lutheran Church. It does this by penetration into the principles of life in the New Testament Church and by critical observation of the life of this church cs revealed in its liturgies, hymns, and art music. This course also makes practical application of these principles to the life of the Christian teacher-church musician.

PIANO and ORGAN

Instrumental music is fought on o private lesson basis. There is no fixed course of study. The student progresses according to native ability and diligence.

If o student hos not completed the third grade of piano, he will continue with the study of piano until that level is achieved. Students who have completed the third-grade level toke up the study of the pipe organ.

The study of instrumenta l music is required of all college students. Exceptions must be approved by the Chairman of the Music Deportment.

Women hove the option of continuing piano study instead of transferring to pipe organ.

This includes basic theory, technical exercises, en::! the standard repertoire. Considerable emphasis is pieced upon playing of hymns and accompaniments to children's songs.

In 1962 the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod resolved to separate Dr. Martin Luther High School from the college department and to move the high school to a new campus. To that end a new site of about 100 acres has been purchased, located approximately five blocks from our present campus in New Ulm. Plans have been prepared for the first phase of building on the new campus, awaiting such time as sufficient funds are available.

Sy way of initiating the separation of high school and college, a High School Soard of Control was elected by the Synod at its 1963 convention, and a separate high school administration has been put into operation. The high school and college departments will continue to function os a unit in many phases of their work so long as both deportments occupy the same campus.

The separation hos been begun, however with the new Soard of Control, a reorganization of the faculty, and with work in other areas which do not involve both departments.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

Successh.,I completion of the work of the eighth grade is a requirement for entrance into the high school department. Transfer students who have earned a sufficient number of acceptable credits will be admitted into the class to which they hove been promoted by the school last attended. {See page 62).

REQUIRED SCHOLASTIC ST AND ARD

To be eligible for any extra-curricular activity the student must maintain at least a C-minus overage. Eligibility shall be determined at each report card time and shall be base d on the work of the previous half-semester.

An unexcused absence for any reason automatically lowers a student's credit-point average one grade level. Example: A to A-minus; B-minus to C-plus.

CREDITS REQUIRED FOR GRADUATION

A credit equals a course given for fifty minutes al least five times a week throughout the year. Sixteen academic credits, exclusive of religion and piano lessons, ore re quired for graduation from the high school. TRANSFER STUDENTS

For each year of attendance at some other high school the transfer student must hove earned at least four credits, three of which should be in the fields of language, the social studies, science, and mathematics.

Should he lock any of these credits, the student must make up such deficiency to be eligible for graduation.

GRADING SYSTEM

Passing grades ore A, B, C, and D; the condition ond failure grades are E !condition), F (failure). The I means incompleted work.

A failure in either semester of o course necessitates o repetition of the entire course.

An incomplete grade (I) indicates that the student, for reasons satisfactory to the instructor in charge, hos been unable to complete the work of the course. This grade is given only when the work already done hos been of acceptable quality. Any student receiving this grade will be given an opportunity to complete such course according to the stipulations laid down by the instructor in charge. If an incomplete is not converted into o passing grade during the next semester of the student's residence, he loses the credit in the subiect.

All conditions (E's) of the first semester moy be removed by obtaining a C or better in such subjects in the following semester. If the E is not removed, it automatically becomes on F. Arrangements for removing conditions received during the second semester must be mode with the instructor within thirty days after the beginning of the foll semester.

Dr. Martin Luther College Summer School shares with the College its purpose of training ministers of religion as teachers for the Lutheran Schools of the Wisconsin Evangelical Luthe ran Synod.

In sharing in this aim, the Summer School seeks to p rovide opportunity for forther study and professional education of persons interested in the work of Christian education. It a lso aims to assist individuals teaching in Wisconsin Synod Schools, both elementary and high school, in meeting the requirements for certification and listing in the NORTHWESTERN LUTHERAN ANNUAL as outlined in the newly adopted "GUIDELINES RELATIVE TO THE LISTING O F CERTIFIED TEACHERS AND THOSE STILL HAVING A PROGRAM O F EDUCATION TO COMPLETE." (C. F.- Synod's Boord of Education and the Confere nce of Presidents) Dr. Martin Luther College Summer School extends a special invitation to all teachers of our Synod's Lutheran Schools who have not had foundation courses in the Word of God at the college level to avail themselves of the opportunity to take courses in the field of religion at this time. We quote from the Guidelines: "To qualify for listing as a certified high school (or elementary) teacher in the Wisconsin Synod, a male teacher shall have had (a) the equivalent of the academic and religious training of a graduate of Dr.Martin Luther College; or (b) if he is a graduate of a secular college, he shall be held to take at least two summer sessions at Dr. Martin Luther College with e mpha sis on courses in re ligion."

The same general principle applies to women teachers who hove been trained in secular schools, particularly part (b).

REGULATIONS FOR CERTI FICATION

The Conference of Presidents of the Wisconsin Synod, which serves as the certifying agency for the Synod, has adopted the following regulations as being applicable to all such who have received a call to teach in the Lutheran Christian day schools and high schools within Synod but who may not have the necessary foundation courses required for certification.

I.

The minimum number of credits for both elementary and secondary teachers not trained in Synod schools but seeking certification shall be set ot fifteen semester hours of credit in the fields of religion, education, and social studies, especially church history.

2.

Ten and one-half hours of the minimum of fifteen hours shall be earned in required courses, and the remaining four and one-half hours shall be earned in elective courses.

The following courses shall be requfred°of all elementary teachers, Genesis (3) (3 credits) Life of Christ (3) Teaching Religion (1 ½) Principles of Christion Education (3)

The following courses shall be required of all secondary teach.ers: Genesis (3) Romons(3) The Augsburg Confession (1 ½) Principles of Christian Education (3)

5.

The following elective courses may be pursued to earn the four and one• holf credits needed in addition to the listings in three and four above: Old Testament (3) {Any book or combination of books from Exodus to Malachi) New Testament (3) (Any book or combination of books from Acts to Revelation) Elementary Dogmatics I and II (3) (3) The Life of Christ (3) Romans (3) Luther's Thought and Theology (1 ½) The Lutheran Confessions (3) Studies in the Catechism (3) The Lutheran Church in America (3)

This arrangement of courses shall be open only to those who are now teaching in schools in Synod with a permanent or temporary call. (0th· ers may become eligible ofter they hove accepted o coll into one of the schools in Synod.)

N.B.

Although it is possible to complete this work in two summers (seven and one-half credits may be carried in one summer session), yet Dr. Mortin Luther College does not bind itself to accommodate the individual. Dr. Mortin Luther College will make every effort to assist the individual in completing his fifteen hours of work in two summers, but more than two summers may be needed in specific coses to complete the minimum proposed. The individual shall in all instances be responsible for his own program.

COSTS Dr. Mortin Luther College endeavors to keep the costs of the summer session to the student as low as possible, yet maintaining standards consistent with sound educational practice and adequately providing for the student's daily needs.

The student is expected to purchase his textbooks and other incidental classroom supplies. These may be hod at the College Book Store. Students should bring their hymnals, ond, if enrolled in religion courses, their Bibles, catechisms, and the like.

Room ond board is available at the College. Individuals ore expected to furnish their own bed linens, blankets, and other personal effects. Meals are available for off-campus students at rates listed below.
