PURPOSE

In the eighty years of its existence, Dr. Mortin Luther College has witnessed many changes: in personnel, plant, and facilities. Yet amid the numerous changes one item has remained unchanged: the purpose of the school's existence. Its one function still is to serve the church, specifically the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. It does this by educating such as will adorn the office of the public ministry as pastors and teachers or will labor in the church as consecrated laymen.

Dr. Mortin Luther College is in reality o combination school, consisting of a preparatory and a college deportment. The high school has a triple function.

It offers courses preparatory for future ministerial training, one for the preaching ministry and the other for the teaching ministry. In addition, it offers o genera I high-school course.

The college deportment trains exclusively for the teaching ministry. Its graduates are specially p repared for the ministry of the Word in our Lutheran day schools.

BASIC

EDUCATIONAL PRINCIPLES

Dr. Mortin Luther College, a teacher-training institution of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, exists in fulfillment of educational principles based on the Word of God. These declare that education is inseparable from religion. They demonstrate that all knowledge in all areas of human thought and endeavor is worthy of inq uiry when viewed in the light of human sin and divine grace. They assert that such evaluation of all things is granted alone through the God-revealed Wisdom of the Bible, the God-man Jesus Christ. They offirm that education, a natural function of the Christian home, is in equal measure a concern of the church, to equip the entire person in mind, body, and spirit for time and for eternity.

It therefore behooves the church to prepare teachers imbued with these educational principles. Dr. Martin Luther College serves the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod in that capacity; it ha s been established and maintained by the Synod to trai n young me n and women q ualified for the teaching ministry in the Christian schools of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. To be properly qualified requires, first of all, a

consecrated spirit of love to Christ an:l the fellowman which is gained alone through searching the Scriptures, the faithful record of God's will to save all men. In addition, there must be academic competence drawn from a learnin;:i experience sufficiently brood and deep for acquiring the attitudes and skills that will meet the high stan:lards of Christion education an:l Christian responsibility to society. This includes familiarity on:l facility with the techniques end tools of teaching. There should also be willingness to render assistan-:e in the worship program of the congregation. Our Lutheran heritage of music in the service of Christion faith emphasizes the need for developin3 on ability to ploy ond conduct appropriate church music.

In corryin3 out these objectives, Dr. Mortin Luther College seeks to provide o Christ-centered school atmosphere for spiritual growth. Each day begins

and clo$e$ with a period of formal wor$hip. Every academic subject is tau,1ht from a background of conviction for Christian truth. The total school experience of the student is guided by the Word of God. Teaching c.omp.eten~e is s:,ught through a curriculum which undergirds the courses in professional methods, practice teaching, end applied music with a strong program of study in literature, science, end the arts.

Indispensable to the entire teaching end learning experience at Dr. Mor• tin Luther College is a thorough foundation in Holy Scripture, in history, and in the heritage of the men of God from whom Dr. Martin Luther College takes its name. All students ore committed to intensive study of the Bible cs the only source anrl norm of absolute truth. From the divine portrayal of sin end grace in Holy Scripture, from the record of God's continued manifestation of wisdom and love throughout history, and from the theological and liturgical treasures inherited from Mortin Luther, students are led to the proper evaluation of human achievement and human failure by which their educational endeavors con contribute most lo the Glory of God and the welfare of the individual and the community, the church end the world.

• • • ADMINISTRATION

Dr. Mortin Luther College is owned and operated by the Wisconsin Evon• gelicol Lutheran Synod. This church body has its headquarters in Milwoulcee, Wi$Consin.

The administration of Dr. Mortin Luther College the above-mentioned Synod has vested in o board of control, e lected by the Synod itse lf. This board consists of three pastors, two male teachers, and two laymen.

The board of control has charge of the calling of professors and deans· With lhis board rests the flnal decision regarding the curriculum. It can make recommendations to the Synod regarding the purchase of property, the erection of buildings, major items in the maintenance of property, end the establishment of policies under which the institution is to operate. Generally speaking, it functions as the conneding link between the school and the Synod.

The administration of all other molters rests in the hands of the school' faculty. The faculty executes its responsibilities through its administrative offices and through committees.

HISTORY

A.lthough Dr. Martin Luther College is now an educational institution of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, it was not founded by that body. The actuo I founder was the German Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Minnesota.

At this Synod's convention, held in New Ulm, Minnesota, in 1883, it was resolved that the Synod open an educational institution of its own. The proposed school wos primarily to offer theological training with a view to supplying min• isters of the Gospel in the Synod's mission flelds. In addition to the ministerial course, the school was also to provide o normal, a classical, and on academic course.

By late foll of 1884 the Synod's resolution was completely executed.

The first building (Old Main), erected an a tract of land donated to the Synod, was dedicated on November 9, 1884. Schoolwork had actually begun several weeks before the dote of dedication.

The second phase of the school's history dates bock to the year 1892. In that year the MiMesota Synod affiliated with the Wisconsin Synod and the Michigan Synod to form the Synod which today is known by the name the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. In consequence of this action, Dr. Mortin Luther College became an educational institution of the newly organized body.

Beca'use this Synod already had a college with a pre-theological course (Northwestern College at Watertown, Wisconsin) and a theological seminary at Wauwatosa (now at Mequon), Wisconsin, it was resolved to make Dr. Mortin Luther College a teacher-training school. To effect this, a three-year preparatory department and a two-year college course were adopted.

In 1919 the preparatory department was expanded into a four-year highschool. A third year was added to the college department in 1927. Since 1950 this department consists of a four-year course, culminating in the degree of bachelor of science in education.

Through the flrst twelve years of its existence, training at Dr. Martin Luther College was open only to male students. The school hos been co-educational since 1896, when the demand for women teachers in our Lutheran day schools compelled the Synod to admit women.

BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS

Dr. Martin Luther College is located in the southwestern part of the city of New Ulm. The campus is approximately one mile distant from the heart of the city.

Traveling by automobile, one can enter New Ulm on U.S. Highways No. 14 and No. 15. The city may also be reached by Greyhound bus service.

Maps found on pages 34 and 66 give detailed information n~cessary to locate the college.

From a very modest parcel of land, comprising but four acres, the campus of Dr. Martin Luther College hos grown into a rather sizable campus. At the present time the college grounds consist of approximately forty-four cues.

The campus is beautifully situated. It lies on a wooded range of hills, overlooking the city of New Ulm. The setting, a veritable park, lends itself admirably for a boarding school.

The lone building of which the school boasted in the years of its infan=y is now but one of a complex of structures. Ten buildings plus ten professcrages are located on the campus itself.

The original building, now known as Old Main, is still rendering va luable service. It now houses the refectory, kitchen, hospital rooms, and living quarters for some of the instructors. Recently it has also again been called upon to serve in the capacity of a dormitory for women.

Since by fer the greoter portion of the school's student body is from outside the city of New Ulm, dormitory focilities are noturolly a vitol part of the campus. Five dormitories are located on the campus. A new four-story womer's dormitory hos been opproved ond is to be built in the year 1963-1964.

The institution supplies bedsteods, mattresses, desks, chairs, and bookracks. These items naturally remain college property. Students will exercise care in the use of these as well as all other college properties. Students must provide themselves with the necessary bed-clothes, mattress pods, towels, desk lamps, and all personal items. The fire ordin:::ince discourages students from bringing electrical appliances such as toasters, etc.

Housed in the various buildings is equipment of diverse kinds, both for the executing of the school's specialized type of training and for o well rounded school life for the students.

The library is situated on the first floor of the Administration Building. present the library consists of 14,750 volumes.

Because the groduotes of Dr. Mortin Luther College ordinarily ore expected to serve os organists and choir directors in the congregations which they serve, the school offers the necessary f acilities for a well-balanced music course. The addition of a second music hall, known as the M usic Center, hos greatly expanded both the room as well as the equipment necessary for choral and instrumental instruction and work. Henceforth there will be approximately fifteen orga ns (one electronic) and thirty-five pia nos available for lessons and practice.

In connection with the library, there is a special music library. This contains approximately 1000 volumes, featuring works on church music and on vocal and instrumental training. The Music Center houses this collection of musical works.

Laboratories, for use in connection with courses in chemistry and physics, ore found on the second floor of the Administration Building. Both loborotor¡ ies are equipped with modern apparatus and facilities.

Three gymnasiums are located on the campus. The main gymnasium, used for varsity sports and physical education, is located in the Administration Building. Smaller gymnasiums are found in the Men's Dormitory and in CenteMial Hall, a dormitory for women. A new gymnasium-dining hall-student union building is in the ploMing stage.

The school's athletic fleld offers fine opportunity for outdoor activities of varied types. In addition to n fo-:,tball gridiron, o baseball diamond and several softball field s, there are four hard-surfaced t ennis courts.

Since the college curriculum demands practice teaching of all its graduates, arrangements have been mode with the local St. Poul's Lutheran Church to use some of its facilities for the operation of a practice school. Five rooms ore devoted exclusively for this purpose. Practice teaching is done under the supervision of the school's education department. Opportunity or acquaintance with kindergarten teaching is also a fforded at St. Poul's Lutheran School. This school is located approximately one mile from the college campus.

POLICIES

In the interest of all concerned, certain policies have been established, aimed at a proper administration of the institution and a fitting concern for the students and their parents. The policies here listed are of a general nature.

Others, specifically related to certain divisions of the school, will be found el.sewhere.

It is understood that the Word of God is to rule supreme at Dr. Martin Luther College and tha t the discipline of the school is to be shaped in accordance with this norm. Bearing this in mind, parents should not attempt to excuse their children from conforming to any of the rules of the institution.

Regular attendance at the services and Holy Communion in the local St. John's Lutheran Church or St. Poul's Lutheran Church is required of all students. Dormitory residents who ore unable to attend services must furnish satisfactory excuse to the person in charge of their dormitory.

Students are also expecte d to be present for t he e v ening devotions conducted by their respective dormitories. These devotions precede the supervised study periods held in the various dormitories.

The school frowns upon late registration. Late registrants will be assessed one dollar p er day for every day late. No student will be permitted to register later than three weeks after the opening of a semeste r.

Deserving of special atte ntion is the matter of punctuality at the beginning of each term. Students will arrange their affairs so t hat they may conform with all the dates and hours established on page 5 of this catalog. Tardiness may have disastrous results for the student. leaving the confines of the city of New Ulm is permissible only by the consent of the proper authorities.

After vacations, dormitory residents must be on the campus by 10:00 p.m., on the night before classes resume.

Absences from the school, necessitating interruption of s:hoolwork, will be permitted only upon request written by parent or gu:irdion.

Expulsion from a class shall be recorded as on absence, excuse not acce pted. Two expulsions from a class period of any one subject will seriously en:fon3er the student's successful completion of that subject.

Practice teachi ng is supervised by the education department of the college and is done at St. Poul's Lutheran School. Stude nts assigned to t he practice s:hool must expect to conform to the schedule maintained by St. Paul's School. A minimum of five weeks of observation an::I practice teaching is required for credit. An additional week of kindergarten practice teaching may be elected by prospective four-year graduates. No credit is granted for practice teaching except where the college hos actual supervision.

Substitute teaching (caused by emergencies in our Lutheran day schools) on the port of students will not be permitted without the knowledge and full consent of the faculty. As a rule, no student will be excused from classes more

than two weeks for such substitute teaching. Under no circumstances will stu~ dents of the high-school deportment get permission forsu::h o step. All inquiries regarding substitute teaching ore to be mode to the president of the school.

Students intending to teach in vacation Bible schools or summer schools should not figure on beginning such work before the close of the school year.

All mail addressed to dormitory residents must pass through the hands of the dean or his assistants. This rule is necessary in order to guard against the influence of unscrupulous persons and concerns who attempt to reach students with their demoralizing letters and printed matter. Parents and guardians, in enrollin3 pupils at this institution, automatically give their consent to this rule.

On or off-campus c.o llege students seeking permission to operate automobiles shall request the some of the Dean of Students at least two weeks before the automobile is brought to the campus. Students granted such perrnission ore expected to hove each semester's school expenses paid in advance.

Accordingly, on advance deposit of $275.00 shall be remitted to the Dean of Students together with the request for automobile privileges. This deposit shall be applied to the student's various accounts upon his arrival at the college. An automobile fee of $5.00 is payable by all college students who own and-or operate automobiles at Dr. Mortin Luther College. Certain other requirements must be met. The letter from the Deon will list such particulars.

Since Dr. Martin Luther College prepares people who are to work in the vineyard of the Lord and therefore expects that such students have ample time to give full attention to their studies, it deems it inadvisable to admit to its regular sessions those who are married.

No sfudent or student groups, engaged in musical, athletic, or other activities, may appear in public performances or in any way represent the school or use the name of the school to further their own personal ambitions without the consent and full approval of the faculty.

It hos been found by experience that students, boarding with private fam ilies, have difficulty maintaining o regular and necessary routine. Permission for such living arrangements is, therefore, rarely granted. When it is, the instiMion assumes no responsibility for the student involved, except during the time he attends classes.

ROUTINE School life, particularly at o boarding school, necessitates o rather rigid routine. Students are, therefore, expected to observe the school's daily program as well as the schedule in effect in the dormitory in which they happen to hove residence.

after completing the teacher-training course they will submit to the decision of the assignment committee of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (unles.s other satisfactory arrangements have been made) and assume the position of teacher wherever assigned.

C.

if they should discontinue their studies, except for a reason san:tioned by the faculty, or should after graduation turn to some other occupation, they will pay lo the college for tuition an amount thot is considered equitable.

â&#x20AC;˘ â&#x20AC;˘ â&#x20AC;˘ ADMISSION Application blanks for enrollment at Dr. Martin Luther College, for highschool as well as colle ge students, may be found on the end sheet of this catalog. This form is also used by foreign students since Dr. Martin Luther College is approved for attendance of non immigrant foreign students under the Immigration and Nationality Act. Detailed information for admission into the college department will be found on page 24, for admission into the high schooldepartment on page 41.

In general, the following is required of all students seeking admission into the institution. A testimonial of good moral character must accompany the application. An honorable dismissal from another Synodical Conference instiMion will be considered sufficient testimonial in the case of those coming from such schools. A certificate of good health obtained from the family physician must also accomp any the ap plication. (See p. 68) Begiming with the schoolyear 1963-1964, all college freshmen will be req uired to have written the test of the American College Testing Program, commonly ca lled the ACT test. Information about this test is given to all high school seniors through the school which they ore attending. These tests ore usually administered at testing centers in November, February, and April.

It is advisable for all students, compulsory for new students, that upon arrival on the campus they first present themselves for registration.

No student will be admitted to a class without first having registe red.

The dormitories will be open to students one day before school-opening.

COUNSELING Every division of a class hos assigned to it a faculty member who acts as its class advisor. Each student is encouraged to consult with his advisor about his academic work and problems. The student's personal problems may also be discussed with him, as we ll as with the Dean of Students and the housemothers of the student's dormitory. For counseling in spiritual matters, students are asked to consult with the Dean of Students, who is the pastoral counselor for the student body.

ORIENTATION An orientation program is conducted during the first week of each new school year. The purpose of the program is to give information about student life and student responsibilities at Dr. Martin Luther College. All members of the freshman c:lass in both college and high school, and all new students in other college and high school classes, are invited to participate in this program.

HEALTH SERVICES Each student's health history, which he is required to send with his application for admission, is on flle. At the time of registration, he pays a medical fee which is used to cover incidental doctor bills and other medical needs throughout the year. This includes medical coverage for those who engage in any sports or in any on-or off-campus activities having faculty sanction. The maximum payment for any given case will be $100.00. Extra consideration is given to those engaged in the interscholastic program. For extended coverage, the college offers o volunto.-y group health insurance program with Blue Cross.

CONCERTS, DRAMATICS, AND LECTURES The academic community of the college presents ample cultural, educational, and recreational events during the schoolyear. Operettas and dramas of larger proportions are presented in alternate years. Other shorter productions are presented during the yea r, including serious one-act productions, and lighte r drama by the Senior High School Class.

Numerous musical events toke place on the campus during the year: recitals by staff membe rs, solo performances by advanced students in organ and piano, and concerts and worship participation by the severa l choral organizations. From time to time outstanding artists perform at the college.

In addition to frequent displays by various academic deportments, the college sponsors an annual series of lectures from the Department of Concerts and Lectures, University of Minnesota. These are often in the area of science, social studies, and recreation.

The Oty of New Ulm offers the Community Concert Series annually at special rates ta students. This series has included some of the world's leading musical talent. Local high school$ present musical a nd dramatic performances which students may attend.

STUDENT AIDS Scholarships

The Aid Association for Lutherans of Appleton, Wisconsin, onnuolly makes the sum of $1500.00 ovoilable for scholarships. These scholarships may be granted only to students of the college department and are awarded at the end of the first semester. The awarding of these scholarships is done by the faculty on the basis of scholarship, citizenship, and need.

The interest earned by the Neubert Scholarship Fund and the Boock Scholarship Fund is also used for deserving students who need financial assistance.

Through the Mr. and Mrs. Poul Schwan Scholarship Fund o sum of $1200 is annually mode available to college os well as high school students who ore preparing themselves for work in the church.

Since the awarding of scholarships is entirely at the discretion of the faculty, the school does not follow the practice of accepting applications for a scholarship.

Student Employment

Off-campus employment which involves the use of o regu!or study period is forbidden to oil high school students and college freshmen. Any student who works off campus during study periods must maintain o 1.000 average and those desiring to work off campus during study hours must obtain a work permit from the head of the dormitcry.

ASSIGNMENT TO CHURCH WORK Upon completion of the course of study, students ore graduated as ready for assignment to church work.

STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council exists to provide opportunity for self-expression, for exercise of initiative, and for the development of o sense of responsibility toward the general welfare of the school. Membership is comprised of two representatives from each class, one mole and one female. Regular meetings are held in which the responsibility for planning the various student activities receives prominent recognition on the agenda.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

In addition to the activities demanded by the various courses, participation in various extra-curricular activities renders pos.s ible for all students an interesting and pleasant school life.

Participation in most of these activities is at the students' option. Some activities come by way of faculty appointment. All activities and organizations ore directly or indirectly under the s¡upervision of the faculty.

ORGANIZATIONS

Because music must play a rather prominent port in the life of Dr. Martin Luther College's graduates, ample opportunity for extracurricular activities in this field is offered. Opportunity for singing is provided by the Aeolian Singers and the Marlut Singers, organizations for women and men, respectively. The two bonds, College Band and Second Band, are open to such who ore interested in instrumental music. A pep band fusnishes music for football and basketball games.

Students interested in dramatics have occasion to cultivate their talents by means of the Luther literary league. Open to high school seniors also is participation in the Senior Class Play. Serving on the staffs of the school paper, the D.M.l.C.Messenger, and the school's annual, The Excelsior, provides students with opportunity for literary self-expression.

A philatelic society and o science club, known as the Phlogistons, have been organized for those interested in these fields.

STUDENT UNION

A recently established organization on the campus is the Student Union.

The Union affords students a splendid opportunity for sociability and entertainment. Temporarily the student union is housed in the basement of the old music hall. Facilities ore offered here for various types of entertainment.

A canteen is operated in connection with the student union.

ATHLETICS Both men and women with o bent toward athletics find ample opportunity to participate in sports of various types. School-sponsored intramural programs ore arranged in season of any number of sports. Inter-collegiate athletic competition, both for the high school and the college, is open to such as excel in sports. At present, interscholastic competition iscorried on in basketball, baseball, football, tennis, track, and golf. The college holds membership in the Southern Minnesota Junior College Conference and in the Central Minnesota Baseball Conference. In football, the high school competes in the Red Rock Conference.

BASIC CURRICULUM Since Dr. Mortin Luther College hos been established and is maintained for the purpose of training ministers of religion to serve as teachers in our Lutheran parochial schools and as organists and choir directors in our Lutheran churches, it offers one basic curriculum.

This curriculum is set up to provide the student with an adequately broad general education during his first two years of study. For his third and fourth years, intensive work in the field of education is added to continued work in general education.

Students who satisfactorily complete the four years of college work become eligible to receive the degree of bachelor of science in educotion. Women students who elect to toke the three-year course in preferen:e to the regular course will be granted a three-year diploma upon sotis-foctory completion of that course.

In response to the Synodical resolution of November 9, 1962, to esto blish a beginning secondary education program at Dr. Martin Luther College, the various deportments, at the time of the publication of this catalog, are working out major and minor sequen:es in their areas, to meet requirem~nts and put the program into operation.

All students enrolled in courses preparatory for active service in the church, either as pastors or teachers, ore classified as divinity s tu d e nts.

ENTRANCE RE0UIRÂŁMENTS Although the college discrimin~tes against no one who is in sympathy with its objective, it must give primary consideration to those students, who, as members of the church, support the school, and must give preferen:e to thos-: who intend to prepare themselves for the teaching ministry.

Before a prospective student con expect any consideration to be given his application, he must submit ta the president a testimony of his good moral character signed by his pastor and a certificate of good health signed by his physician. (p. 68) To be eligi ble for admission to the college department, a high school graduate must hove hod a cumulative grade overage of not less than C-minus Experien:e has shown that the bulk of a student's high-school work should lie within certain fields if he expects to prepare himself for the teaching ministry. For that reason the prospective student must have ten or more credits in the fields of language, the social studies, scien:e, and mathematics.

T ran sfer stude nts ore welcomed, provided they meet the general requirements for admission. Their credits having a quality of C or better will be accepted with the grade point value of 1.000. Credits of D quality wifl be accepted provisionally. If the student, ofter one year's residen::e, has on average of l.500 in the work done during that year, the O credit will be accepted at its face value (credit, but no grade points). (March 12, 1956.)

Sum mer school students coming with D's on transcripts of credits from other schools must, if they wish to re ceive credits for courses with D-grades, maintain a grade-point overage of 1.500 during the first three sessions of ottendonce. If the individual is eligible for graduation with fewer than three sessions' work, he must still maintain the overage required above.

Although not required, it is nevertheless desirable that students entering our college department be able to play at least third-grade music.

Application for admission should be made well in advance of the opening of the school term. Applications with transcripts of credits a lready ac• quired in some other institution must be sent to the president, to whom a lso all new students, ofter they hove registered, should present themselves. For the applicant's convenience, a blank has been provided at the end of the catalog.

REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATION Four-year Curr iculum :

In addition to meeting the requirements of religion and instrumental music, the student must earn a total of one hundred twenty-eight (128 ) semester hours of credit.**

Three-year Curriculum:

The three-year curriculum is open to women students only. A diploma is granted to those completing this course.

A. Since Dr. Martin Luther College is preparing candidates for the teaching ministry, it is self-evident that strong emphasis be placed on training in religion. Therefore the school requires every student to poss o II courses offered in religion.

Since the teacher generally is required to serve as organist in the congregation, she will be expected to pursue the course of study in instrumental music outlined on page 37. Upon meeting the requirements in piano she will be encouraged to begin the study of pipe organ.

In addition to the requirements of religion and instrumental music, she must earn a total of ninety-eight (98) semester hours of credit*.

Note: A student who hos interrupted his studies at Dr. Martin Luther College for five years may not be o candidate for a degree or a diploma on the basis of the catalog under which first he entered, but he will be expected to meet the requirements of the catalog for the year in which he reenters.

GRADING SYSTEM The grading system used in the college is as follows: A , excellent (100-93); B, good (92- 85); C, fair (84- 77); D, poor (76- 70); F, failure (69); I, incomplete.

The grade D is counted as credit in semester hours. It does not, however, carry any grade points, but the grade points from other subjects may balance the grade point deficiency of o D. If a student desires grade points for o course in which he received a D, he must repeat the course.

The grade F necessitates the repetition of the course for credit and for grade points. Although a student may get on F ino course, he may be eligible for graduation if he hos met the requirements.

The grade I indicates that a student, for reasons satisfactory to the instructor in charge, hos been unable to complete the work of the course. This grade is given only when the work already done hos been of acceptable quality. The student receiving the grade I will be given on opportunity to complete such o course according to stipulations laid down by the instructor in charge. Grode points will be granted on the basis of the grade earned after the I hos been removed.

GRADE POINTS

A grade point system is used as a convenient method of determining whether a student hos done work of C overage.

Grade points are granted on the following basis: Grode A-3 grade paints per semester hour (3 times the nLmber of semester hours).

Grode 8-2 grade points per semester hour (twice the number of semester hours).

Grade C-1 grade point per semester hour (the some number as semester hours).

Grade D-No grade points.

Grade F-No grade points.

Grade I-No grade points until the work is completed to the satisfaction of the instructor.

A student's average is expressed by the ratio between the number of semester hours taken and the number of grade points earned. This ratio is determined by dividing the total number of grade points earned by the total number of semester hours taken. A student must have a minimum grade point ratio of 1.000 to be eligible for graduation.

An unexcused absence shall deduct one-half grade point from the student's total.

An unexcused absence on the day before a vacation or on the flrst day after a vacation shall carry doub le penalty.

REQUIRED SCHOLASTIC STANDARD

In order to ontinue his studies at Dr. Mortin Luther College a student is expected to maintain the classification of "stude nt in good standing."

The student's classification will be determined at the end of each semester, and it will app ly until the end of the next semester of residence.

A student "on probation" (either regular or strict probation) must become a "student in good standing" by the end of the next semester of residence. Application for reodmittonce will be considered only ofter o lapse of two semesters.

A student on "strict probation" will be ineligible to participate in any extra-curricular activity.

A student on "strict probation" will hove his privileges sharply curtailed.

Evening and week-end permissions will be restricted. He also will not be permitted to work in town.

The classification from semester to semester will in no way change or abrogate any of the requirements for grodcation.

Dr. Mortin Luther College will not approve of an undergraduate as on emergency teacher unless the student hos a cumulative grade point average of 1.000.

It tokes up problems in modulation through analysis of hymns end penetrates into fundamental triads end their inversions through portwriting end keyboard work.

Instrumental music is taught on a private lesson basis. There is no flxed course of study. The student progresses according to native ability and diligen:e.

If a student hos not completed the third grade of piano, he will continue with the study of piano until that level is achieved. Students who hove completed the third-grade level toke up the study of the pipe organ.

The study of instrumental music is required of all college students. Exceptions must be approved by the Chairman of the Music Department.

Women hove the option of continuing piano study instead of transferring to pipe organ.

Piano Course: This includes basic theory, technical exercises, and the standard repertoire. Considerable emphasis is pieced upon ploying of hymns and accompaniments to children's songs.

Organ Course: Standard instruction books ore used. Fundomentolsof registration ore taught. Considerable emphasis is pieced upon service ploying: hymns, accompaniment of the liturgy, and chant accompaniment.

The repertoire emphasizes the Lutheran heritage, especially music based upon hymns in The Lutheran Hymnal.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS Successful completion of the work cf the eighth grade is o requirement for entrance into the high school department. Transfer students who have earned o sufficient number of acceptable credits will be admitted into the class to which they have been promoted by the school lost attended. (See pages 67 and 68.

REQUIRED SCHOLASTIC ST ANDA RD To be eligible for any extra-curricular activity the student must maintain at least o C-minus overage. Eligibility shall be determined at each report card time end shell be based on the work of the previous half-semester.

An unexcused absen:e for any reason automatically lowers a student's credit-point overage one grade level. Example: A to A-minus; 8-minus to C-plus.

CREDITS REQUIRED FOR GRADUATION

A credit equals a course given for fifty minutes at least five times o week throughout the year. Sixteen academic credits, exclusive of religion and piano lessons, ore required for graduation from the high school. Because of the character of this school, each student shall successfully complete a course in religion for each year of attendance.

Each student registered for the teachers course shall toke piano lessons.

A diploma will be granted to the student meeting these requirement,.

TRANSFER STUDENTS

For each year of attendance ct some other high school the transfer student must hove earned at least four credits, three of which should be in the fields of language, the social studies, science, and mathematics.

Should he lock any of these credits, the student must make up such deficiency to be eligible for graduation.

GRADING SYSTEM

Passing grades ore A , B, C, and D; the condition and failure grades ore The I means incompleted work.

E (condition), F (failure).

A failure in either semester of a course necessitates a repetition of the entire course.

An incomplete grade (I) indicates that the student, for reasons satisfactory to the instructor in charge, has been unable to complete the work of the course. This grade is given only when the work already done hos been of acceptable quality. Any student receiving this grade will be given on opportunity to complete such course according to the stipulations laid down by the instructor in charge. If on incomple te is not converted into a passing grade during the next semester of the student's residence, he loses the credit in the subject.

All conditions (E's) of the first semester may be removed by obtaining a If the E is not removed, it automatically becomes on F. Arrangements for removing conditions received during the second semester must be mode with the instructor within thirty days after the beginning of the fall semester.

Dr. Martin Luther College Summer School shares with the College its purpose of training ministers of religion as teachers for the Lutheran Schools of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod.

In sharing in this aim, the Summer School seeks to provide opportunity for further study and professional education of persons interested in the work of Christian education. It also aims to assist individuals teaching in Wisconsin Synod Schools, both elementary and high school, in meeting the requirements for certiftcation and listing in the NORTHWESTERN LUTHERAN ANNUAL as outlined in the newly adopted "GUIDELINES RELATIVE TO THE LISTING OF CERTIFIED TEACHERS AND THOSE STILL HAVING A PROGRAM OF EDUCATION TO COMPLETE." (C. F.- Synod's Board of Education and the Conference of Presidents) Dr. Martin Luther College Summer School extends a special invitation to all teachers of our Synod's Lutheran Schools who hove not had foundation courses in the Word of God at the college level to avail the mselves of the opportunity to toke courses in t he field of religion at this lime. We quote from the Guidelines: "To qualify for listing as o certified high school (or elementary) teacher in the Wisconsin Synod, a male teacher shall hove had (a) the equivalent of the academic and religious training of o graduate of Dr.Mortin Luther College; or (b) if he is a graduate of o secular college, he shall be held to take at least two summer sessions at Dr. Mortin Luther College with emphasis on courses i n religion."

The some general principle applies to women teache rs who have been trained in secular schools, particularly part (b).

REGULATIONS FOR CERTIFICATION

The Confere nce of Presidents of the Wisconsin Synod, which se rves as the certifying agency for the Synod, hos adopted the following regulations as being applicable to all sudi who have received a coll to teach in the Lutheran Christion day schools and high schools within Synod but who may not have the necessary foundation courses required for ce rtification.

The minimum number of credits for both elementary and secondary teachers not trained in Synod schools but see king ce rtification shall be set at fifteen semester hours of credit in the fields of religion, education, and social studie s, especially church history.

Ten and one-half hours of the minimum of fifteen hours shall be earned in required courses, and the remaining four and one-half hours shall be earned in elective courses.

N.B.

Althcugh it is possible to complete this work in two summers (seven and one-half credits may be carried in one summer session), yet Dr. Mortin Luther College does not bind itself to accommodate the individual. Dr. Martin Luther College will make every effort to assist the in:lividual in completing his fifteen hours of work in two summers, but more thc-n two summers may be needed in specific cases to complete the minimum proposed. The individual shall in all instances be responsible for his own p rogram.

COSTS Dr. Martin Luther College endeavors to keep the costs of the summer ses-sion to the student as low as possible, yet maintaining standards consistent with sound educational practice and adequately providing for the students' doily needs.

The student is expected to purchase his textbooks and other incidental classroom supplies. These may be hod al the College Book Store. Students should bring their hymnals, and, if enrolled in religion courses, their Bibles, catechisms, and the like.
