Although Dr. :Martin J.uther College is now an eduratinnal i11stit11tion of the ·wisconsin EYangclical Lutheran Synod, it was not founded by that body. The actt1al founder was the German Evangelical Lutheran Synod of :Minnesota.

At this Synod's conYention, held in Xcw Ulm, ::llinncsota, in 1888, it was rcsoh·cd that the Synod open an educational institution of its own. The proposed school was priwarily to offer theulogical training with a Yiew Lo supplying ministers of the Gospel in the Synod's mission fields. In addition to the ministerial course, the school was also to pro,·ide a normal, a classical, and an academic course.

Hy late fall of 1884 the Synod's resolution was completely executed. The first Luil<ling (Old )fain), erected on a tract of land don::i Led lo the Synod, was dedicated on KoYember 9, 1884-.

Schoolwork had actually begun scYcral weeks before the date of dedication.

The second phase of the school's history dates back to the year 1892. In that year the l\l im1esola Synod affiliated with the Wisconsin Synod and the 1Iichigan S~"llod to form the Synod which today is known by the name the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. In consequence of this action, D r. )Iartin Lu ther College became an educational inslil1,Lion of the newly organized body.

Because this Synod itlrcady had a college with a pre-theological course ( Xorthwestern College at Watertown, Wisconsin) and a theologic.11 seminary at Wam,atosa (now at :Mequon), ·Wisconsin, it wais cesolYed to make Dr. :M artin Luther College a teachcrLraining school. T o effect this. a three-year preparatory department and a two-year college course were adopted.

I n 1919 the preparalor~- deparlmenL was e>..'Pandcd into a fom-year high-srhool. A third yl'ar was added to the college depart~cnt in 1027. Since 1950 this department consists of a fouryear course, culminating in the degree of bachelor of science in education.

T he lone build ing of which the school boasted in the :--ears of its infancy is now but one of a complex of structures. T en buildinis plus eigl,t profcssorar,es are located on the campus itself. T-wo additional buildings are iu the planning stage.

T he oriiiinal building, now known as Old ) Iain, is still render ing Yaluable service. I t now houses the refectory, kitch en, hospital roomi,, and li,·ing quarters for some of lhe instr11ctors. R ecently it has also again been called upon to scrYc in the capacity of a dormitor~· for women.

T he library is situated on the first floor of the Administration building. .\.t presf'nt the library consists of 14,750 Yolumes. A book and stationery store is operated in conjunction wi lh lhf" library. A library with greatly expanded facilities is one of the ne:,,.'t projects contewplated at the school.

Because the graduates of D r. :llartin Luther College ordinarily are expected to sen·e as organists and choir directors in the congregations which the~· scrYc, the school offers the necessary f ac-ilities for a well-halanced music c011rse. The addition of another music hall, known as the Jl usic Ceder, has greatly expanded both the room as well as the equipment nece.--."ar~· for choral and instrumental instruction and work. H enceforth there will he approximately fifteen orymrn (one electronic) and thirty-ih-e pianos aYailable for lessons and practice.

I n connection with the library. there is a special 11111s1c library. This contains approximately 1000 Yolumes, ft-aturing works on cLurdt music and on YOcal and instrumeulal training.

Three gymnasiums are loraled on the campus. The main gsmoasium, used for Yarsity sports and ph.'¡sical education, is locatt>d iu Lhe .\.dministration Building. Smaller gymnasiums are found in the }!en's D ormitory and in C'enteunial H all, a dormitory for women.

Since the college curriculum demands practice teachin~ of all ils ~aduates, arrangements ha...-e hccn made with the local SL. Paul's Lutherau Church to use some of its facilities for t.hc operation of a praclice school. Four rooms are devoted exclusiYely for this purpose. P ractice teaching is <lone under the super,ision or the school's education dep:nlmcnt. Opportunity or acquaintance with kindergarten lea<'hing is also afforded at St. P aul's Lutheran School. T his school is located approximately one mile from the college campus.

The collel!e department of D r. Martin Luther College is exclush-el~, a teacher- training institution. T his department, acu cordingly, offers but one course. This course is aimed partiR cularly at preparing for the teaching ministry in our Lutheran s clay schools. The Teachers Course offers the foundation required for admission into the school's teacher-training department. The Classical Course is geared to preparation necessary for future theologica.l study. Practice teaching is supcr .iscd by the cducatic>n department of the college and is done at St. Paul's Lutheran School. Students assigned to the practice school must expect to conform to the schedule maintained by St. Paul's School. A minimum of five weeks of observation and practice teaching is required for credit. An additional week of kindergarten practice teaching may be elected b~â&#x20AC;˘ prospecl ive four<year graduates. I\o credit is granted for praclice leaching except where the college has actual superYision.

Substittue teaching (caused by emergencies in our L11tl1eran day schools) on the part of students will not be permitted without the knowledge and full consent of the faculty. As a rule, no student will be excused from classes more than two weeks for such substitute teaching. Under no circumslances will students of the high-school department get permission for such a step. All inquiries regarding substitute teaching are to be made to the president of the school.

Stude~ts intending to teach in vacation B ible schools or summer l!clwols should not figure on beginning such work before the close of the school year.

The grading syslem used in Lhe college is as follows: A. excellent {100-98); B , good (92-85); C, fair (84-77); D, poor (76-70); F, failure (69- ); I , incomplete.

The grade D is counted as credit in semester hours. I t does not, howeYer, carry any grade points, but the i:,trade points from other subjects may balance tl1e grade point deficiency of a D. If a student desires grade points for a course in which he receh·ed a D, he must repeat the course.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

Successful completion of the work of the eighth grade is a requirement for entrance iuto the high scl,ool department. REQUIRED SCHOLASTIC STANDARD

To he eligible for any exlracurricular activity the student must maintain at least a 0-minus average. Eligibility shall be determined at each report card time and shall be based on the work of the previous halfsemester.

GRADING SYSTEM

Passing grades are A, B, C, and D; the condition and failurc grades are E (condition), F (failure). The I means incompletcd work.

A failure in eilher semester of a course necessitates a repetition of the entire Coll1'8e.

An incomplete grade [I] indicates that the student, for reasons satisfactory to the instructor in charge, has been unable to complete the work of the course. This grade is given only when the work already done has been of acceptable quality. Any student receiving this ?1'ade mil he given an opportunity to complete such course according to the stipulations laid down by the instructor in charge. If an incomplete is not converted into a passing grade during the next semester of the student's residenee, he loses the credit in the subject.
