General Information PURPOSE Dr. Martin Luther College, in the seventy-six years of

its existence has witnessed many changes: in personnel, plant, and facilities. Yet amid the numerous cha;nges one item has remained unchanged, the purpose of the school's existence. Its one function still is to serve the church, specifically the Evangelical Lutheran Joint Synod of Wisconsin and Other States. It does this by training such as will actively work in the church as pastors and teachers and such who will be consecrated laymen.

Dr. Martin Luther College is in reality a combination school, consisting of a preparatory and a coUege department. The high­ school has a triple functio.n. It offers courses preparatory for future ministerial training, both in the public ministry and in the teaching ministry in our Lutheran day schools, and a general high-school course.

The college department trains exclusively for the teaching ministry. Its graduates are specially prepared for the ministry of the Word in our Lutheran day schools.

By late fall of 1884 the Synod's resolution was completely executed. The first building (Old Main), erected on a tract of. land donated to the Synod, was dedicated on November 9, 1884. Schoolwork had actually begun several weeks before the date of dedication.

The second phase of the school's history dates back to the year 1892. In that year the Minnesota Synod affiliated with the Wisconsin Synod and the Michigan Synod to form the Evangeli­ cal Lutheran Joint Synod of Wisconsin and Other States. In consequence of this action, Dr. Martin Luther College became an educational i,nstitution of the newly organized body.

Became this Synod already had a college with a pre-theological course (Northwestern College at Watertown, ·Wisconsin) and a theo­ l ogical seminary at Wauwatosa (now at Thiensville), Wisconsin, it was resolved to make of Dr. J\ilartin Luther College a teacher-train­ ing school. To effect this, a three-year preparatory department and a two-year college course were adooted.

Dr. Martin Luther College is owned and operated by the Evangelical Lutheran Joint Synod of Wisconsin and Other States. This church body has its headquarters at Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The administration of Dr. Martin Luther College the above­ mentioned Synod has vested in a board of regents, elected by the Synod itself. This board consists of three pastors, two male teachers, and two laym.,en.

The board of regents has charge of the calling of professors and deans, the final decision regarding the curriculum, the pur­ chase of property, the erection and upkeep of buildings, the es­ tablishing of policies under which the institution is fo operate.

In general, it functions as the connecting link between the school and the Synod.

The administration of all other matters rests in the hands of the school's faculty. The faculty execute.s its responsibilities through its administrative offices and through committees.

In 1919 the preparatory department was expanded into a four-year high school. A third year was added to the college department in 1927. Since 1950 this department consists of a four-year course.

The school has been co-educational since 1896, when the demand for women teachers compelled the Synod also to admit women.

CAMPUS

From a very modest parcel of land, comprising four acres, the campus of Dr. Martin Luther College has grown into a rather sizable campus. At the present time the college grounds consist of forty acres. The campus is beautifully situated. It lies on a wooded range of hillf, overlooking the city of New Ulm. The setting, a veritable park, lends itself admirably for a boarding school.

Although Dr. Martin Luther College is now an educational institution of the Evangelical Luther­ an Joint Synod of Wisconsin and Other States, it was not found­ edlby that body. The actual founder was the German Evangeli­ cal' Lutheran Synod of Minnesota.

At this Synod's convention, held in New Ulm, Minnesota, in 1883, it was resolved that the Synod open an· educational in­ stitution of its own. The proposed school was primarily to offer

The college grounds are located in the southwestern part of New Ulm, at a distance of ap­ proximately one mile from the heart of the city. The City of New Ulm may be reached by the Chicago & Northwestern Rail­ way (Dakota 400). Greyhound bus service is likewise available from various directions. Traveling by automobile, one can enter New Ulm on Highways 14 and 15. Maps found on pages 32 and 62 will give detailed information necessary to locate the college.

CAMPUS

From a very modest parcel of land, comprising four acres, the campus of Dr. Martin Luther College has grown into a rather sizable campus. At the present time the college grounds consist of forty acres. The campus is beautifully situated. It lies on a wooded range of hillf, overlooking the city of New Ulm. The setting, a veritable park, lends itself admirably for a boarding school.

Although Dr. Martin Luther College is now an educational institution of the Evangelical Luther­ an Joint Synod of Wisconsin and Other States, it was not found­ edlby that body. The actual founder was the German Evangeli­ cal' Lutheran Synod of Minnesota.

At this Synod's convention, held in New Ulm, Minnesota, in 1883, it was resolved that the Synod open an· educational in­ stitution of its own. The proposed school was primarily to offer

The college grounds are located in the southwestern part of New Ulm, at a distance of ap­ proximately one mile from the heart of the city. The City of New Ulm may be reached by the Chicago & Northwestern Rail­ way (Dakota 400). Greyhound bus service is likewise available from various directions. Traveling by automobile, one can enter New Ulm on Highways 14 and 15. Maps found on pages 32 and 62 will give detailed information necessary to locate the college.

Since, as a rule, by far lhe greater portion of the school's student body is from outside the city of Kew Ulm, dormitory facilities are naturally a Yitai part of the campus. Fi,·e dormitories are located on the campus.

T he library is situated on the first floor of the Admin istration B uilding. I t proYmdes ample stack room and offers sufficient facilities for reading and study. At present the library consists of I 3,000 Yolun:es. The college book store adjoins the library.

Because the graduates of D r. )Iartin Luther CoUege ordinarily are expected to sen·e as organists and choir directors in the congregations they serYe, the school offers the necessary facilities for a well-balanced m.usic course. I n connection with the library, there is a speGial music library. This contains approximately 1000 rnlumes. featuring especially works on Church music and on ,·ocal and instrumental training. Axailable for l~ssons and practice are nine pipe organs and about twenty-6,·e pianos. l.aboratories, for use in connection "ith courses in chemistry and physics. are found on the second floor of the Administration Building. Both laboratories are equipped with modern apparatus and equipment.

Three gymnasimns are located on the campus. T he main gymnasium, use<l £or Yarsity basketball and physical education for men, is found in the Administration Building. Smaller gyIIY nasiums are located in Centennial H all and in the :\! en's Dormitory.

Since the college curriculum demands practice u.aching of all its graduates, arrangements h aYe been made with the local St. Paul's Lutheran Church for the use of that congregation's graded school. Three rooms of that school are devoted entirely to the purpose of practice teaching under t he supen·ision of the education department. Opportunity for practice teaching in the kindergarten is also afforded. St. Paul"s Schoo] is approximately one mile from the college campus.

COURSES

The college department of Dr. :Martin Luther College is exclusiYely a teacher-training institution . This department, accordingly, offers but one course. The course is aimed particularly to prepare for the teaching ministry in our Lut heran day schools. Details concerning the college department are offered on pages 21-36.

The high school department offers a threefold course. The T eachers Course offers t he foundation required for admission into t he school's teacher-training department. The Classical Course is aimed at preparation for future theological study.

The General Education Course affords a well-rounded highschool course with the benefit of courses in Religion and schooling under Christian influence and in Christian surroundin~s.

The most recently established organization on the campus is the Student Union. The "Cnion affords students a splendid opportunity for sociability and entertainment.

Both boys and girls with a bent toward athletics find ample opportunity to participate in sports of Yarious types. Schoolsponsored intramural programs are arranged in season for any number of sports. Inter-collegiate athletic competition, both for the high school and the college, is open to such as excel in sports. AGREEMENT Since for divinity students particularly the Synod underwrites a substantial portion of the expenses im·olvetl, rliscontinuance of studies or failure upon graduation to accept a call as teacher in one of our schools results in considerable loss to the church body. For this reason the board of regents requires all di,·inity students at the time of admission into the school to agree to the proposition that A. they will not discontinue their studies at Dr. M artin Luther College except by the ad,·ice, or with the consent, of the faculty; B. after completing the teacher-training course they will submit to 'the decision of the as ignment committee of the Evangelical Lutheran Joint Synod of TI'isconsin and Other States [unless other satisfactory arrangements haYe been made] and assume a position as teacher in a Lutheran day school, if offered to them; C. if they hould discontinue their studies. except for a reason sanctioned by the faculty, or should after graduation turn to some other occupation, they will pay to the college for tuition an amount that is considered equitable.

Since Dr. ~artin l ,11t.her College has been established and is maintained for the purpose of training ministers of religion to sen·e as teachers in our Lutheran parochial schools and as organists and choir directors in our Lutheran churches, it oilers one basic curriculum.

GRADE POINTS

A grade poin~ system is u.se<l as a convement method of determining whether a student has done work of C aYerage.

Grade points are granted on the following basis: Grade A-3 grade points per semester hour [3 Limes the 11umber of semester hours].

A student's aYerage is expressed by the ratio between Lhe nwnber of semester hours taken and the number of grade points earned.
