General Information PURPOSE Dr. Martin Luther College, now in the seventy-fifth

year of its existence, has witnessed many chan­ ges, in personnel, plant, facilities. Yet amid the numerous chan­ ges one item has remained unchanged, the purpose of the school's existence. Its one function still is to serve the church, specifi­ cally the Evangelical Lutheran Joint Synod of Wisconsin and Other States. It does this by training such as will actively work in the church as pastors and teachers as well as such as will be found among the laity.

Dr. Martin Luther College is in reality a combination school, consisting of a preparatory and a college department. The high­ school has a triple function. It offers courses preparatory for future ministerial training, both in the public ministry and in the teaching ministry in our Lutheran day schools, and a ;;eneral high-school course.

The college department trains exclusively for the teaching ministry. Its graduates are specially prepared for the mjnistry of the Word in our Lutheran day schools.

ADMINISTRATION

Dr. Martin Luther College is owned and operated by the Evangelical Lutheran Joint Synod of Wisconsin and Other States. This church body has its headquarters at Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The administration of Dr. Martin Luther College the above­ mentioned Synod has vested in a board. of regents, elected by the Synod 'itself. This board consists of three pastors, two male teachers, and two laymen.

The board of regents has charge of the calling of professors and deans, the final decision regarding the curriculum, the pur­ chase of property, the erection and upkeep of buildings, the es­ tablishing of. policies under which th� in�titution is to operate.

In general, it functions as the connectmg lmk between the school and the Synod.

The administration of all other matters rests in the hands of the school's faculty. The faculty executes its re_sponsibilities through its administrative offices and through committees.

By late fall of 1884 the Synod's resolution was completely executed. The first building (Old Main), erected on a tract of land donated to the Synod, was dedicated on November 9, 1884. Schoolwork had actually begun several weeks before the date of dedication.

The second phase of the school's history dates back to the year 1892. In that year the Minnesota Synod affiliated with the Wisconsin Synod and the Michigan Synod to form the Evangeli­ cal Lutheran Joint Synod of Wisconsin and Other States. In consequence of this action, Dr. Martin Luther College became an educational institution of the newly organized body.

Since this Synod had a collere with a pre-theological course at Watertown, Wisconsin, and a theolog,ical seminary at Wauwa­ tosa (now Thiensville), Wisconsin, it was resolved to transform Dr. Martin Luther College into a teacher-training school. To effect this, a three-year preparatory department and a two-year college course were adopted.

In 1919 the preparatory department was expanded into a four-year high school. A third year was added to the college department in 1927. Since 1950 this department consists of a four-year course.

Through the first twelve years of its existence, training at Dr. Martin Luther College was open only to male students.

The school has been co-educational since 1896, when the demand for women teachers compelled the Synod also to admit women.

CAMPUS

From a very modest parcel of land, comprising four acres, the campus of Dr. Martin Luther Colle�e has grown into a rather sizable campus. At the present time the college grounds consist of thirty-six acres. The campus is beautifully situated. It lies on a wooded range of hills, over­ looking the city of New Ulm. The setting, a veritable park, lends itself admirably for a boarding school.

Although Dr. Martin Luther College is now an educational institution of the Evangelical Luther­ an Joint Synod of Wisconsin and Other States, it was not found­ -ed by that body. The actual founder was the German Evangeli-cal Lutheran Synod of Minnesota.

At this Synod's convention, held in New Ulm, Minnesota, :in 1883, it was resolved that the Synod open an educational in­ ,stitution of its own. The proposed school was primarily to offer

The college grounds are located in the southwestern part of New Ulm, at a distance of ap­ proximately one mile from the heart of the city. The City of New Ulm may be reached by the Chicago & Northwestern Rail­ way (Dakota 400). Greyhound bus service is likewise available from various directions. Traveling by automobile, one can enter New Ulm on Highways 14 and 15. Maps found on paQ.'es 32 and ,62 will give detailed information necessary to locate the college.

In connection with Lhe library, there is a special music library. T his contains approximatcl;v 1000 Yolunws, featuring csp<'cially works on Church music and on Yoca.l and instrumental training. T.aboratories, for use in connect ion with courses in chemistr y and physics, are found on the second floor of the Administration Building. B oth laboratories are equipped with rrodern apparatus an<l equipment.

The school's athletic field offers fine opportunity for outdoor atl1letics and rt"creation. I n addition Lo a football gridiron, a. baseball field and ScYeral softball diamonds there arc four excellent hard-surfaced tennis courts.

Since the college curriculum demands practice uaching of a ll its graduates. arran~ements haYe been made with the local St. P aul·s Lutheran Church for the use of that congregation's graded school. T hree rooms of that school are de\'oted entirelY to the purpose of practice teach.ing under the superYision of lh~ education department. Opport1u1it,y for practice teaching in the kindergarten is also alTor<led. St. P aul"s School is appro-ximately one mil..- from the college campus.

The college <leparlmcnt of Dr. ~Iartin Luther College is exclusi\·ely a tea,cher-training institutio11. This department, accordingly, offers but one course, The course is aimed particularly to prepare for the teaching ministry in our Lutheran day schools. D etails concerning the college department are offered on pages ~1-36.

The high school department offers a threefold course. The Teachers Course offers the foundation required for admission into the school's teacher-training department. The Classical Course is aimed at preparation for future theological study.

The General Education Course affords a well-rounded highschool course with the benefit of courses in Religion and schooling under Christian influence and in Christian surroundings.

B ecause music must play a rather prominent pai·t in the life of D r. :\Iartin Luther College·s graduates, ample opportunity for extra-curricular acti,·ities in this field is offered. Opportunity for singing is proYideci hy the First Choir, the Second Small Choir, the Aeolian Singers, and the Jfarltt! Siugers. ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

Successful completion of the work of the eigl1th grade is a requiren:enl for entrance into the high school department. Transfer students who haw• earned a sufficient number of acceptable credits will be admitted into the class to which they ha,·e been promoted by the school last attended.

To he eligible for any extracurricular acliYiLy the student must maintain at least a C-minus a,·erage. Eligihility shall be determined at each report card time and shall be based on Lhe work of the previous halfsemester.

Dr. ::\Iartin Luther Collel,!e has for its purpose the traininl! of ministers of religion as teachers for our Lutheran schools, as well as the prt>paration of organists and choir directors for our Lutherarr congrrgations.

The Summer School participates in this aim. Its courses are designed especially for former gradnales and for those serving as emergenc~ teadiers in our Lutheran schools. It is desirable tlrat enrollers in the Summer School are people with previous college experience or such as have hari teaching experience in the field.

The Summer School also pro,ides a sequence of courses for enrollees of the "Winnebago l<~mngenc~· Teacher Training Program."* It invites teachers of Lutheran Higl, Schools to avail themselves especial!~· of the religion c-011rst>s.
