General Information PART I PURPOSE Dr. )Iartin Luther College, now in the scv-<:nty-third year of its existence, has witnessed many changes, in personnel, planl, facilities. Yet amid the numerous cha.ngcs one item has remained unchanged, the purpose of the school's existence. Its one function still is to serYe the church, specifically the Evangelical Lutheran Joint Synod of ,nsconsin and Other States. It does this by training such as "ill acLive]y "ork in the church as pastors and teachers as well as such as will be found among the laity.

Dr. :Martin Luther College is in reality a combination school, consisting of a. preparatory and a college department. The highschool has a triple func.tion. It offers courses preparatory for future ministerial training, both in the public ministry and in the leaching ministry in our Lutheran day schools, and a general high-school course.

The college department trains exclusively for the teaching ministry. Its graduates are specially prepared for the ministry of the Word in our ],utheran day schools.

Dr. Martin Luther College is owned and operated by the EYangc]ical Lutheran Joint Synod of \\isconsin and Other States. This church body has its headquarters at J\lilwaukee, \\"isconsin.

T he administration of Dr. )Iartin Luther College the abovementioned Synod has vested in a board of regents, elected by the Synod itself. This board consisL<; of three pastors, two male teachers, and two laymen.

The board of regents has charge of the calling of professors and deans, the final decision regarding the curriculum, the purchase of property, the erection and upkeep of buildings, the establishing of policies under which the institution is to operate.

In general, it functions as the connecting link between the school and the Synod.

The administration of a.II other ma.t.Lcrs rests in the hands of the school's faculty. The faculty executes its responsibilities through its administrative offices and through committees.

HISTORY

Although Dr. l\Iartin Luther College is now an educational institution of the Evangelical Lutheran Joint Synod of Wisconsin and Other States, it was not founded by that body. The actu'.11 founder was the German Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Minnesota.

At this Synod's convention, held in New Ulm, Minnesota, in 1883, it. was resolved that the Synod open an educational institution of its own. The proposed school was primarily to offer -10-

theological trammg with a Yiew to supplying ministers of the Gospel in the Synod's mission fields. In addition to the ministerial course, the school was also lo pro,·ide a normal, a classical, and an academic course.

By late faU of 1884 I he Synod·s resolution was complt·: tt'ly execuled. T ire first building [Old ::\IaiuJ, erected on a tract of land donat ed lo the Synod, was dedicated on l\oYernber 9, 1884 .. Schoolwork had acluall~· beglrn several weeks before tire dale or dedication.

The secoud phase of the school's history dates ba~k to the year 1892. In Lhal year the )linnesota Synod affiliated with the Wisconsin Synod and the )lichigan Synod lo form the E,·angclical Lutl11mm J oint Synod ol " isconsin and Olher States. In consequence of I his action, D r. ::H artin Luther College hl'came an educational institution of the newl~· organized body.

Since this Synod had a collt'ge with a pre-theological course a L 1\·atertown. Wisconsin, and a theological seminary at \\"auwatosa [now T hiens,·ille], ,Yisconsin, it was resoh·ed to transform Dr. ) Iartin Luther Coll1>ge into a. teacher-training school. T o effect this, a three-year preparatory department and a tKo-year collei;e course were adopted.

In 1910 the prcpar11loQ· ilepartn-ent was expanded into a four-~ear high school. _.\_ third year was added to the college deparl11 ent in 19~7. Since 1050 this deparlrrl'nt consi,;l.., of a four-yt'ar course.

Through the first tweh-e years of its existence, training at Dr. ;ilarti11 Luther College was open only to malt' struleuts.

The lone building which the school boasted in Lhe years of its infancy is now but one of a complex of structures. Xine buildings plus se,·eral professorages are located on the campus itself. E ecause the graduates of D r. ) Carlin L uLher College ordinarily are expected to sen·e a;; organists and choir directors in the cougregalions they sen·c, the school offers the necessary faciliiws for a well-balanced 1nu.sic course l n connection with the library, there is a spe<:ial music librar,y. 'flris contains approximate}~· 1000 ,·olumes, featuring especially works on Church music and on ..-ocal and instrumental training. Axailable for le_ssons and practice are nine pipe organs and about twenty-fixe pianos.

T.aboratories, for use in connection with courses in chemistry and physirs, arc found on the second floor of the Adminislral ion Building. B oth laboratories are equipped witl1 motlern apparatus and equipment.

Three gyninas-iums are located on the campus. T he main gymnasium, used for ,·arsity basketball and ph~·sical t>ducation for men, is found in the .Administration B uilding. Smaller gymnasiums are localed in C:enlennial H all and in the :\!en's D orrnilor y.

T he school's ,llhletic Juld offers fine opportunity for outdoor athletics and recreation . In addition to a baseball field and several softball diamonds there a re four excellent hard-surfaced tennis cour ts.

Since the college curriculum demands practice uaching of all its graduates, nrran~ements haYe been made with the local St. Paul's Lutheran Ch11rcl1 for the nse of that congregation's graded school. Three rooms of that school arc devoted entirely to the purpose of practice teaching under the supen~ision of the education department. Opporlunily for practice teaching in the kindergarten is also afforded. St. Paul"s Sehool is approximately one mile from the college campus.

The college department of Dr. :Martin LuLher College is exdusi ,·ely a le;icher-tra.ining institution. This department, accordingly, offers but one course. The course is aimed parLicularly to prepare for the teaching ministry in our Lutheran da;\- schools. Details concerning the college department are offered on pages 21-36.

The high school department offers a. threefold course. The Teachers' Course offers the foundation required for admission into the school's teacher-training department. The Classical Course is aimed at preparation for future lheologicaJ study.

The General Education Conr,-e affords a -well-rounded highschool course "iLh the benefit of courses in Religion and schooling under Christian influence and in Christian surroundings.

Participation in most of tlie activities is by Lhe stu<leut's option. Some actiYitics come by "Way of faculty appointment. All organizations and activities arE>o directly or indirectly under the supen-ision of the faculty.

Because music must play a rather prominent part in the life of Dr. _\fartin Luther College's gnuluates, ample opportunity £or exlra--curricular actiYities in this field is offered. Opportunity for singing is pro,;dcd by the First Choir, the Semnd SrnaU Choir, the Aeolian Singers, and the .Jlarllt! Singer.~. The two bands, College Band and Serond Ha11d, are open t.o such as are interested in instrumental music.

Students i11leresLP.d in dramatics ha,c occasion to culti,-ate their talents by means of the Luther Literary League. Open to high school seniors also is participation in the Srnior Class Play.

Sen·ing on the staffs of the school paper, the D. Jf. L. C. Messenger, and the school's annual, The Excelsior, provides sLudents with opportunity for literary self-expression.

College Department PART II THE BASIC CURRICULUM Since Dr. Martin Luther College has been cst.ablished and is maintained for the purpose of Lraining ministers of religion to sen·e as teachers in our Lutheran parochial scliools and as organists and choir directors in our Lutheran churches, it offers one basic curric11l11m.

Th.is curriculum is set up to provide the student v. ith an adcqualf'ly broiul general education during his first two years of study. For his third and fourth years, intensiYe "ork in lhe field of ed1tcatwn is added to continued work in general education.

Students who satisfactorily complete the four years of college work become eligible to recei,·e the degree of bachelor of science in educalion. ·women students wbo elect to take the three-year course in preference to the regular course will be p-anted a. three-year diploma upon satisfactory completion of that course.

REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATION • Four-year Curr iculum: To be eligible for graduation with a degree of bachelor of science in eclucaLion, the student must mccf the following requirements: A. He must have a minimum average of C in the tolal number of courses taken during his college years.

Since the teacher generally is required to serve as organist in the congregation, he is expected to meet the requirements for music as outlined in the catalog on page 33-34.

GRADING SYSTEM

'l'he grading system used in the college is as follows: A, excellent [100-9:3]; B, good [92-85]; C, fair [84-77]; D, poor (76-70]; F, failure (69]; J, incomplete.

The grade D is counted as credit in semester hours. It does not, howcYcr, carry any grade poiuls, but the grade points from other subjects may balance the grade point deficiency of a D. If a student desires grade points for a course in which he receiYed a D, he mu1,t repeat the course.

T he grade F necessitates the rcpcLilion or the course for credit aud for grade points. A student ";th an F grade, howcYcr, may he eligible for graduation if he has met the requirements.

The grade I indicates that a student, for reasons satisfactory to the instructor in charge, has been unable to complete the work of the course. This grade is gi, en only when the work already done bas been of acceptable quality. The student recei,ing the grade I ·will be gi ,·en an opportunity to complete such a course according to stipulations laid do\Til by the instructor in charge.

Au incomplete grade [I] indicates that the student, for reasons satisfactory to the instructor in charge, has been unable to complete the work of the course. Any student recei,,ing this grade mil be giYen an opportunity to complete such course according to the stipulations laid down by the instructor in charge.
