GENERAL INFORMATION Dr. Martin Luther College was founded in the year the German Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Minnesota, mainly with a view to supply minHistory isters of the Gospel for the mission fields of that church body. Besides the theological, the institution provided for a normal, a classical, and an academic training.

In the year 1893, the Minnesota Synod combined with the Synods of Wisconsin and Michigan to form a Joint Synod. Dr. Martin Luther College was then changed into a Lutheran normal school with a two-years' course and with a three-years' preparatory department. - A commercial course, which originally had also been offered, was discontinued in 1901 by reslution of the Joint Synod.

In its stead, a four-year classical course was introduced m 1903.

By action of the synod at its session 111 1919, the preparatory department was enlarged into a high school, offering an ancient classical and a normal preparatory course. To this a two-year college C()Urse was at first added, but by resolution of the Joint Synod in 1927 this , • course was extended to three years. In 1941 the J oinf Synod resolved to make it a four-year tollege course. The freshman class of September, 1950, began this four-year course. By a resolution of the Synod, the instrnction in the institution is also to young ladies. * The college grounds are located in the southwestern rart of New Ulm, on a beautiful wooded range of hills forming a fine natural park. ADMINISTRATION BUILDING. This building, 124 by 208, erected in 1928, - modern, fire-proof, and adequate in every respect - contains the classrooms, the Buildings library, the chemistry and the physics laboratories, a gymnasium, an auditorium which, when combined with the gymnasium, has a seating capacity of 1,000, the president's office, and a reception room.

SERVICE BUILDING. This building is so arranged that the basement is used entirely for storage, with the excep­ tion of the space necessary for a laundry for college linen.

The first floor offers the kitchen and the dining rooms, and the second and the third floors are used as living quarters for the steward and his family and for the maids. In addition, this building contains hospital rooms with all the necessary facilities.

Boys' DORMITORY. This dormitory, a four-story fire­ proof building, modern in every respect, can accommodate about 150 pupils.

GrnLs' DORMITORIES. By action of the Joint Synod of Wisconsin and Other States, the former director's resi­ dence was converted into a girls' dormitory. This spacious fifteen-room house affords dormitory facilities for thirty girls.

In the summer of 1945 West Hall was erected to accom• modate thirty-six more girls.

The new girls' dormitory, Centennial Hall, is now com­ pleted and in use. In addition to study and living quarters, it is also equipped with a recreation room and laundry facilities.

M usrc HALL. This building is used for practice pmposes. It contains practice rooms for organs and for pianos, also one classroom.

LIBRARY. The library is situated on the first floor of the administration building. It has ample stack room and reading room, with a book store adjoining it. At 12

present it consists of 12,000 volumes, but space has been provided for 20,000.

GYMNASIUMS. The mam one 13 located 111 the administration building. Dimensions: 68 to 76. Modern shower and locker rooms for boys have Equipment been arranged in the basement. Another and a smaller gymnasium is situated in the boys' dormitory.

Centennial Hall provides a separate gymnasium for girls.

LIBRARY OF Musrc. This library contains 900 volumes on Church Music, vocal and instrumental training.

LABORATORIES. The science lecture room is equipped for the necessary demonstrations in the various subjects.

The students' laboratory contains 70 individual chemistry desks and physics tables, also the most modern apparatus and equipment.

TRAINING SCHOOL. The local St. Paul's Lutheran Congregation permits our training department to use its graded parochial school. Here each member of the graduating class of the College Department instructs under the supervision of a critic teacher.

CAMPUS. The college grounds comprise thirty-two acres, a part of which, being naturally wooded, is reserved for park purposes, another for baseball, tennis, and football.

Accordingly a course of study as outlined on Page 25 has been arranged and carried out.

* CLASSICAL CouRSE. In order to meet the particular requirements of the congregations in Minnesota and of those farther to the west, a college preparatory course is offered to young men who wish to prepare for the holy ministry. This gives them an opportunity to spend their first student years nearer to their home. * GENERAL EDUCATION. Although our school is not accredited, it offers to young people an excellent opportunity for perfecting their high school education. We claim a positive superiority for our school because all government and instruction are of a distinctly Christian character. • See

ANNOUNCEMENT. New students should be announced as early as possible, so that all necessary arrangements for the new school year may be Entrance Requirements made. Announcements, with full details as to the st:idents' previou~ stu~ies, together with a transcript of credits already acquired in some other institutio11, are to be made to the president, to whom also new students, upon their arrival, should present themselves.

TEsnMONIALS. Upon entering the institution, a student will be expected to submit to the president satisfactory testimony of his good moral character and a certificate of good health. The latter may be obtained from the family physician. Students from other institutions must furnish proof of their honorable dismissal.

ADMISSION. All graduates of the eighth grade are eligible for entrance into our high-school department.

Students having been graduated from the public high schools may have to enter our twelfth grade unless they can furnish a sufficient number of acceptable credits.

It is advisable that male students d-?siring to enter our Callege Depart111e11t be able to play at least third-grade piano music.

REGISTRATION. All new students for the next school year will present themselves to the Committee on Credit~ on ~uesday, September 'J, 1952, immediately after the opcnmg service at 8: 30 a. m. The evenings are devoted to supervised study periods.

Each dormitory conducts an evening devotion.

PUNCTUALITY. In the interest of all concerned, it is expected that pupils arrange to be present at the beginning of each term. Tardiness causes loss of time in the classes and extra work for the instructors.

No student will be permitted to register later than three weeks after the opening of a semester.

Every student is expected regularly to attend all classes.

Absences are to be excused with the respective instructor: beforehand, if possible; otherwise afterwards. Abse11ces from the city, necessitating the interruption of schoolwork, 10i/l be pennitted only upon request written by parent or guardian.

Expulsion from a class period shall be recorded as an absence, excuse not accepted. Two expulsions from a class period of any one subject will seriously endanger the student's successful completion of that subject.

SUBSTITUTING. No student intending to do substitute teaching ought to interrupt his studies without first notifying the president and getting his permission. Under no circumstances will students of the high-school classes get permission for such step. ing the school year a student teacher will not as " rule be excused from classes for more than two weeks.

ATHLETICS. All athletics are conducted under the supervision of the director of athletics, who is assisted by an athletic board consisting of seven students. By the order of the College Board of Directors competitive games with other schools are allowed in football, basketball, and base­ ball. Such games must be arranged with the approval of the athletics director. This applies not to the schedules of the college team only, but also to class teams or other teams who wish to play local games.

In order to be eligible for college competition in athletics a student must meet the eligibility requirements of the Southern Minnesota Junior College Conference.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES. Band, Marlut Singers, Aeolian Chorus, Literary Societies. These organizations, except the hand, are cor.ducted by students under faculty supervision.

D. M. L. C. Messenger is edited by the students. Subscrip­ tion is a dollar a year. Students also publish an annual.

MAIL. All mail addressed to students living in the dormitories must pass through the hands of the deans, or their substitutes, and be delivered to them by the post-office.

This rule is necessary in order to guard against the influence of unscrupulous persons and concerns who es­ pecially attempt to reach students with their demoralizing letters and printed matter. Parents and guardians, in sending pupils to this institution, thereby give their consent to this rule. This also includes students who are of age.

AUTOMOBILES FOR STUDENTS. The use of automobiles by students is strictly forbidden during the school year.

No student is permitted to have a car on the campus or m the immediate vicinity.

BOARDING WITH PRIVATE FAMILIES. It has been found by experience that the regularity of dormitory life can, as a rule, be maintained only very imperfectly in private families.

If parents or guardians wish their boy or girl student to board in a private home, the institi1tion must decline all responsibility for him, or her, except during recitations.

FACILITIES. Board and lodging can be had in the college buildings. Resident students must provide themselves with pillows, qui lts, blankets, sheets, Board and Tuition towels. The institution furnishes mattress, bedstead, table, bookrack, and a chair; but these articles remain college property.* - The dormitories will be 0 pe 11 to students one day before school-opening and one day after school-close. This rule covers both the longer summer vacation and the two shorter recesses for the Christmas and Easter holidays.

If a student completes our college course and is willing to accept a position in the church, or if he accepts a teaching position earlier at our request, one fourth of this sum is refunded after the first year of teaching, another one fourth after two years of teaching, and the final one half after three years of teaching.

Private music students, piano rent, per year $9.00.

V. One half of all board and tuition accounts must be paid at the beginning of the first semester; the other, at the beginning of the second semester.

All fees should be paid at the time of registration.

VI. Students can purchase all of their books at the College Book Store.

A deposit of $10.00 is required from all students in the beginning of the school year as part payment on book bills.

No stude11t will be given his credits for transfer to a11¡ other institution until all of his accounts are paid in full.

No June re port will be se>it until Delinquent Accounts the accounts for that year have been paid or satisf actory arrangement for payment has been made. When students who have attended the instit1ttion before desire to register for the new school year in fall, all th eir old accounts must have been paid in full.

VII. Transfer of Credits.

One transcript of credits will be furnished free of charge to each student or graduate. Additional copies will be furnished upon the payment of one dollar ($1.00) for each copy.

The expense for board as well as that for fuel is figured quite )ow for divinity students, the syno_d being ready to make up in cash all shortage m the household.

Pledge In order to protect the institution as much as possible against any Joss from such pupils who, after having for years enjoyed the advant_ages offered to them, eventually, without any return service to the church, turn to some other vocation, the board of regents adopted the resolution that all divinity students upon entering the institution be obliged to give the following promise: In consideration of the opportunities offere<l me by Dr. Martin Luther College, I promise that I shall not discontinue my studies at that institution exctpt by the advice, or with the consent, of the faculty; and chat, after finishing the Normal Course, I will submit co the decision of the assignment committee of the Ev. Luth. Joint Synod ( unless other arrangements have been made) and assume a position as teacher in a parochial school of the Lutheran Church, if offered to me. If I should not continue my studies to the end of the course, except for a reason sanctioned by the faculty, or if, after graduation, I turn to some other occupation, I promise to make such returns to the treasury of the college for board and tuition as may be considered equitable.

COLLEGE DEPARTMENT Dr. Martin Luther College offers one basic curriculum.

It has for its purpose the training of ministers of religion to serve as teachers in our Lutheran parochial schools, as well as the preparing of organists and choir directors for our Lutheran churches.

The first two years of work endeavor to supply the student with an adequately broad general education prior to his actual teacher-training courses. The third and fourth years continue the general educ;:ition program and at the same time offer intensive work in the field of education.

Students who satisfactorily complete the four years of college work become eligible to receive the degree of Bachelor of Education. A three-year certificate is issued to women students who desire it, provided they have completed the prescribed three-year curriculum satisfac­ tor:ly.

UNIT OF CREDIT The unit of credit is the semester hour, representing one class meeting of fifty minutes per week, for one semester of eighteen week,. The semester hour is equal to one and one half quarter hours.

REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATION To be eligible for graduation a student must have an average of C in the total number of subjects taken during his college years. He must also have earned the minimum number of semester hours of credit in the various fields of study.

One hundred twenty-eight semeste,· hours of credit, exclusive of physical education, are necessary for gradu­ ation from the four-year curriculum. Each student must also acquire a total of eight semester hours in physical education.

The degree of Bachelor of Education will be awarded to the student who successfully meets these requirements.

GRADING SYSTEM The grading system used in the College is as follows: A. excellent (100-93); B, good (92-85); C, fair (84-77);

poor (76-70); F, failure (69-

) ; I, incomplete.

The grade D is counted as credit :n semester hours.

It does not, however, carry any grade points, but the grade points from other subjects may balance the grade point deficiency of a D.

If a student desires grade

points for a course in which he received a D, he must repeat the course.

The grade F necessitates the repeut10n of the course for credit and for grade points. A student with an F grade, however, may be eligible for graduation if he has met the requirement for the grade point average and the requirement for the semester hours in the varius fields of study.

The grade I indicates that a student, for reasons satisfactory to the instructor in charge, has been unable to complete the work of the course. This grade is given only when the work already done has been of acceptable quality. GRADE POINTS A grade point system is used as a convenient method of determining whether a student has done work of C average.

Grade points are granted on the following basis : Grade A -

3 grade points per semester hour (3 times the number of semester hours).

Grade B -

2 grade points per semester hour ( twice the number of semester hours).

Grade C -

1 grade point per semester hour same number as semester hours).

Grade D -

No grade points.

Grade I -

No grade points until the work is completed to the satisfaction of the instructor.

A student's average is expressed by the ratio between the number of semester hours taken and the number of grade points earned. This ratio is determined by dividing the total number of grade points earned by the total number of semester hours taken. Thus a student must have a minimum grade point ratio of 1.00 to be eligible for graduation.

An unexcused absence for any reason shall deduct onehalf grade point from the student's total.

An unexcused absence on the day before a vacation or on the first day after a vacation shall carry double penalty.

Each student must also earn .4 credit in physical education for each year of attendance. Students must earn as many credits in Religion each year as are offered. The passing mark is D, and the average of the two semesters will be used in the promotion of scholars from grade to grade.

A diploma will be awarded upon the completion of this course.

GRADING SYSTEM Passing grades are A, B, C, and D; the condition and failure grades are E (condition), F (failure) and I (incomplete).

A "failure" (F) in a one-semester course necessitates a repetition of that course. A "failure" (F) in either semester of a two-semester course necessitates a repetition of the entire course.

The grade I (incomplete) indicates that a student, for reasons satisfactory to the instructor in charge, has been unable to complete the work of the course. This grade is given only when the work already done has been of acceptable quality. Any student receiving this grade will be given an opportunity to complete such course according to the stipulations laid down by the instructor in charge. If an "incomplete" (I) is not converted into a passing grade during the next semester of the student's residence, he 38

loses the credit in the subject for the semester in which he received the incomplete grade.

All conditions (E's) of the first semester in a twosemester course may be removed by obtaining a C in such subjects in the following semester. All conditions (E's) in the second semester may be removed by examination within thirty (30) days after the beginning of the fall semester, except that in Latin a condition may also be removed by obtaining a C in this subject in the first semester of the next school year.

In one-semester courses all conditions (E's) may be removed only by satisfactory examination; arrangements for such examinations must be made with the instructor in charge at the beginning of the next semester.

Two conditions (E's) on the report at the end of the school year can not be removed. Student must repeat same class.
