GENERAL INFORMATION Dr. Martin Luther College was founded in the year

1884, by the German Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Minnesota, mainly with a view to supply ministers of the Gospel for the mission fields of that church body. Besides the theological, the institution provided for a normal, a classical, and an academic training.

History

In the year 1893, the Minnesota Synod combined with the Synods of Wisconsin and Michigan to form a Joint Synod. Dr. Martin Luther College was then changed into a Lutheran normal school with a two-years' course and with a three-years' preparatory department. - A commercial course, which originally had also been offered, was discontinued in 1901 by resolution of the Joint Synod.

In its stead, a four-year classical course was introduced in 1903.

By action of the synod at its session m 1919, the preparatory department was enlarged into a high school, ofiering an ancient classical and a normal preparatory course. To this a two-year normal course was at first added, b1tt by resolution of the Joint Synod in 1927 this course was extended to three years. In 1941 the Joint Synod resolved to make it a four-year normal co.urse. The freshman class of September, 1950, began this foitr-year co1trse. B3, a resolittion of the Synod, the instr1tctio11 in the instit1ttion is also to young ladies.

ADMINISTRATION BUILDING. This building, 124 by 208, erected in 1928, - modern, fire-proof, and adequate in every respect - contains the classrooms, the Buildings library, the chemistry and the physics laboratories, a gymnasium, an auditorium which, when combined with the gymnasium, has a seating capacity of 1,000, the p1·esident's office, and a reception room.

SERVICE BUILDING. This building is so arranged that the basement is used entirely for storage, with the excep­ tion of the space necessary for a laundry for college linen The first Hoar offers the kitchen and the dining rooms, and the second and the third floors are used as living quarters for the steward and his family and for the maids. In addition, this building contains hospital rooms with all the necessary facilities.

Doys' DoRMITORY. This dormitory, a four-story fire­ proof building, modern in every respect, can accommodate about 150 pupils.

GrnLs' DORMITORIES. By action of the Joint Synod of Wisconsin and Other States, the former director's resi­ dence was converted into a girls' dormitory. This spacious fifteen-room hou�e affords dormitory facilities for thirty girls.

In the summer of 1945 West Hall was erected to accom· modate thirty-six more girls.

The new girls' dormitory, Centennial Hall, is now com­ pleted and in use. In addition to study and living quarters, it is also equipped with a recreation room and laundry facilities.

Music HALL. This building is used for practice pu1poses. It contains practice rooms for organs and for pianos, also one classroom.

LIBRARY. The library is situated on the first floor of the new administration building. It has ample stack room and reading room, with a book store adjoining it. At 12

present it consists of 12,000 volumes, but space has been provided for 20,000.

GYMNASIUMS. The main one is located in the new administration building. Dimensions: 68 to 76. Modern shower and locker rooms for boys have Equipment been arranged in the basement. Another and a smaller gymnasium is situated in the boys' dormitory.

Centennial Hall provides a separate gymnasium for girls.

LIBRARY OF Musrc. This library contains 900 volumes on Church Music, vocal and instrumental training.

LABORATORIES. The science lecture room is equipped for the necessary demonstrations in the various subjects.

The students' laboratory contains 70 individual chemistry desks and physics tables, also the most modern apparatus .::nd equipment.

TRAINING SCHOOL. The local St. Paul's Lutheran Con­ gregation permits our training department to use its graded parochial school. Thus, in connection with our College Department, we have a regular training school consisting of pupils from the second, third, fourth, and fifth grades.

Here each member of the graduating class of the College Department instructs about three weeks under the super­ vision of a critic teacher. These students also conduct a beginners' class.

CAMPUS. The college grounds comprise twenty-eight acres, a part of which, being naturally wooded, is reserved for park purposes, another for baseball, tennis, and football.

Various bequests have been made to Dr. Martin Luther College. Of these the following have been combined into one group: John Horrisberger, $1,000; Anna Funds Reim, $400; N. N., per Rev. A. Ackermann, $100; Louise Wellendorf, $288.73; Carl Tolzmann, $200; Eva Anding, $2,318.88; H. Burmeister, $100; John Schwartz. $7,035.37. This amounts to $11,442.98.

The Funds Committee of the Joint Synod also has charge of the following bequests, also designated for the 14

benefit of Dr. Martin Luther College: Robert Schmidt, $1,000; John Boock, Sr., $100; Emma Oppenheimer, $500; Lisette Heid, $911.08. Total: $2,511.

COLLEGE CouRSE. The Ev. Luth. Joint Synod of Wisconsin and Other States has made this institution a teachObJ"e t d A" ers' seminary and has thereby estab. . . . c an 1m 1. h d 1s e as its chief aim the training of able teachers for Lutheran parochial schools. Accordingly a course of study as outlined on Page 25 has been arranged and carried out.

*. CLASSICAL COURSE. In order to meet the particular reqmrements of the congregations in Minnesota and of those farther to the west, a college preparatory course is o~e:ed to young men who wish to prepare for the holy ministry. This gives them an opportunity to spend their first student years nearer to their home. * ~ENERAL EDUCATION. Although our school is not acc:ed,ted, it offers to young people an excellent opportu~lty for perfecting their high school education. We claim a pos,'t•1ve supenonty · · for our school because all government and instruction are of a distinctly Christian character.

DIVINITY STUDENTS. All students enrolled in these courses, with the desire to prepare for service in the Church, are considered as divinity students.

ANNOUNCEMENT. New students should be announced as early as possible, so that all necessary arrangements for the new school year may be Entrance Requirements made. Announcements, with full details as to the st11dents' previous studies, together with a transcript of credits already acquired in some other i11stitution, are to be made to the president, to whom also new students, upon their arrival, should present themselves.

All this is 11ecessary before scholars are definitely e11Yolled.

TESTIMONIALS. Upon entering the institution, a student will be expected to submit to the president satisfactory testimony of his good moral character and a certificate of good health. The latter may be obtained from the family physician. Students from other institutions must furnish proof of their honorable dismissal.

ADMISSION. All graduates of the eighth grade are eligible for entrance into our high-school department.

Students having been graduated from the public high schools may have to enter our twelfth grade unless they can furnish a sufficient number of acceptable credits.

Male students desiring to enter our College Department shoitld be able to play at least third-grade piano music.

REGISTRATION. All new students for the next school year will present themselves to the Committee on Credits on Tuesday, September 4, 1951, immediately after the opening service at 8 : 30 a. m. They wilI then be assigned to their respective classes.

W01rn OF Gon. It is understood that the Word of Go:! is to rule supreme and that the discipline of the school is to be shaped in accordance with this norm.

Discipline Regular attendance of the services and Holy Communion in the local Synodical Conference churches is required of all students. Residents of the dormitories, unable to attend, must furnish satisfactory excuse. Parents should also bear in mind that they should not attempt to excuse their children from conforming to any of the rules of the college.

The evenings are devoted to supervised study periods.

Fach dormitory conducts an evening devotion.

PUNCTUALITY. In the interest of all concerned, it is expected that pupils arrange to be present at the beginning of each term. Tardiness causes loss of time in the classes and extra work for the instructors.

No student will be permitted to register later than three weeks after the opening of a semester.

Every student is expected regularly to attend all classes.

Absences are to be excused with the respective instructor: beforehand, if possible; otherwise afterwards. Absences from the city, necessitating the interruption of schoolwork, will be permitted only upon request written by parent or guardian.

Expulsion from a class period shall be recorded as an absence, excuse not accepted. Two expulsions from a class period of any one subject will seriously endanger the student's successful completion of that subject.

SunsTITUTING. No student intending to do substitute teaching ought to interrupt his studies without first notifying the president and getting his permission. Under no circumstances will students of the high-school classes get permission for such step. A II inquiries in this direction should not be made to the scholar concerned, but to the president. Summer school teachers must not be expected to take up work before the close of the school year. Dur18

By the order an athletic board consisting of seven students games with competitive Directors of Board ollege of the C ll, other schools are allowed in football, basketba and base­ ball. Such games must be arranged with the approval of the athletics director. This applies not to the schedules of the college team only, but also to class teams or other teams who wish to play local games.

In order to be eligible for college competition in athletics a student must meet the eligibility requirements of the Southern Minnesota Junior College Conference.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES. Band, Marlut Singers, Aeolian Chorus, Literary Societies. These organizations, except the band, are conducted by students under faculty supervision.

D. M. L. C. Messenger is a quarterly edited by the students.

Subscription is a dollar a year. Students also publish an annual.

MAIL. All mail addressed to students living in the dormitories must pass through the hands of the deans, or their substitutes, and be delivered to them by the post-office.

This rule is necessary in order to guard against the influence of unscrupulous persons and concerns who es­ pecially attempt to reach students with their demoralizing letters and printed matter. Parents and guardians, in sending pupils to this institution, thereby give their consent to this rule. This also includes students who are of age.

AUTOMO!lILES FOR STUDENTS. The use of automobiles by students is strictly forbidden during the school year.

BOARDING WITH PRIVATE FAMILIES. It has been found by experience that the regularity of dormito ry life can, as a :ule, be maintained only very imperfec tly in private _ families. F ACILITJES. Board and lodging can be had in the college buildings. Resident students must provide themselves with pillows, quilts, blankets, sheets, Board and Tuition towels. The institution furnishes mattress, bedstead, table, bookrack, and a chair; but these articles remain college property.* - The dormitories will be open to students one day before school-opening and one day after school-close. All fees should be paid at the time of registra­ tion.

VI. Students can purchase all of their books at the College Book Store.

A deposit of $10.00 is required from all students in the beginning ui the school year as part payment on book bills.

No student will be given his credits for transfer to an­ other i11stitution 1111/il all of his accounts are paid in full.

No June report will be se-it until Delinquent Accounts the accounts for that year have bern Paid or satisfactory arrangement for payment has bee n niade. When students who have attended the institution before desire to register for the new school year in fall, all the old accouuts must have been paid in full.

VII. Transfer of Cre dits.

One transcript of credits will be furnished free of � harge to each student or graduate.

Additional copies will be furnished upon the payment of one dollar ($1.00) for each copy.

The expense for board as well as that for fuel is figured quite low for divinity students, the synod being ready to make up in cash all shortage in the household.

Pledge In order to protect the institution as much as possible against any loss from such pupils who, after having for years enjoyed the advantages offered to them, eventually, without any return service to the church, turn to some other vocation, the board of regents adopted the resolution that all divinity students upon entering the institution be obliged to give the following promise: In consideration of the opportunities offered me by Dr. Martin Luther College, I promise upon honor that I shall not discontinue my studies at that institution except by the advice, or with the consent, of the faculty and that, after finishing the Normal Course, I will submit to the decision of the assignment committee of 'the Ev. Luth. Joint Synod ( unless other arrangements have been made) and assume a position as teacher in a parochial school of the Lutheran Church, if offered to me. If I should not continue my studies to the end of the course, except for a reason sanctioned by the faculty, or if, after graduation, I turn to some other occupation, I promise to make such returns to the treasury of the college for board and tuition as may be considered equitable.

COLLEGE DEPARTMENT GRADING SYSTEM The grading system used in the college is as follows : A excellent (100-93); B, good (92-85); C, fair (84-77); D: poor (76-70); F, failure (69- ) ; I, incomplete.

The grade D is counted as credit in semester hours. It does not, however, carry any grade points, but the grade points from other .ubjects may balance the grade point deficiency of a D. If a student desires grade points for a course in which he received a D, he must repeat the course.

The grade F necessitates the repetition of the course for credit and for grade points. A student with an F grade, however, may be eligible for graduation, if he has met the requirement for the grade point average and the requirement for the semester hours in the various fields of study.

The grade I indicates that a student, for reasons satisfactory to the instructor in charge, has been unable to complete the work of the course. This grade is given only when the work already done has been of acceptable quality. The student receiving this grade will be given the opportunity to complete such course according to the stipulations laid down by the instructor in charge. Grade points will be granted on the basis of the grade earned after the I has been removed.

If an I is not converted into a passing grade during the next semester of the student's residence he forfeits the credit in the subject, and the grade beco~es an F.

REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATION A college credit is reckoned on the basis of the semester hour - an hour being fifty minutes; a semester, eighteen weeks.

To be eligible for graduation a student must have an a:erage of C in the total number of subjects taken during his college years. One hundred twenty-eight semester hours, exclusive of physical education, are necessary for graduation from the four year course. GRADE POINTS A grade point system is used as a convenient method of determining whether a student has done work of C average.

Grade points are granted on the following basis : Grade A Grade B Grade C Grade D Grade F Grade I -

3 grade points per semester hour (3 times the number of semester hours).

2 grade points per semester hour ( twice the number of semester hours) .

1 grade point per semester hour ( the same number as semester hours) .

No grade points.

No grade points.

No grade points until the work is completed to the satisfaction of the instructor.

A student's average is expressed by the ratio between the number of semester hours taken and the number of grade points earned. This ratio is determined by dividing the total number of grade points earned by the total number of semester hours taken. Thus a student must have a minimum grade point ratio of 1.00 to be eligible for graduation.

An unexcused absence for any reason shall deduct onehalf grade point from the student's total.

An unexcused absence on the day before a vacation or on the first day after a vacation shall carry double penalty.

T 90. This short course in typewriting for personal use provides necessary information about the parts of the typewriter; about the techniques of paragraphing, hyphenization, capitalization, and correct spacing before and after punctuation marks, about forms of letters, envelopes, outlines, etc. The student also learns how to make carbon copies, how to erase neatly, and how to cut stencils. The course plans 32

to develop a reasonable rate of speed, perhaps twenty to twenty-five words per minute, without need for watching the keys. The student who finishes this course should be able to use the typewriter for any personal purpose. One period per week for ten weeks.

Mu. 306. LUTHERAN ORGANIST. One period per week. Construction and mechanical operation of the pipe and electronic organs, the tonal features of stops and their combination. The principles of playing the church service (Prelude, hymn, liturgy, interlude, postlude). The practical side carried out in morning and evening devotions.

One period per week. The historical development of the Lutheran chorale, liturgy, choir and organ music from the sixteenth century to the beginning of the twentieth century.

APPLIED MUSIC ORGAN Professors Backer, M. Albrecht Organ instruction is optional for girls. Girls taking organ lessons must meet the requirements of the instructor or discontinue, subject to faculty approval.

Organ instruction is required of all male students.

Exceptions are subject to faculty approval.

Students not taking organ instruction are required to take at least two years of piano lessons in the college department.

Orientation of the organ. Acquisition of proper organ touch, pedaling, correct phrasing, registration and interpretation. Playing of hymns and preludes by the end of first semester. During the second semester a minimum of four to six hymns practiced per week in addition to preludes, interludes and postludes, as the practical work for the church service. Trio playing. Bach's Eight Preludes and Fugues assigned at the earliest sign of competency. (Prerequi5ite: Third grade piano technique.)

Bach's Orgelbiichlein, Rheinberger and easier Mendelssohn Sonatas assigned at earliest opportunity.

Advanced course in technique, pedaling, registration and interpretation. Minimum of six. hymns practiced per week in addition to advanced preludes, fugues, phantasies, toccatas and sonatas as practical work for the church service. Octave trio playing. Playing of the liturgies. Wedding and funeral music. Greater works of Bach, works by Guilmant, Widor and others assigned at earliest sign of competency. (Prerequisite: 202.)

VOCAL TECHNIQUE Mu. 104, 105. VOCAL TECHNIQUE. One period per week. Elements of notation, scales and intervals.

Basic principles of breath control, vocal technique, range, resonance, pitch, eartraining and sight reading. The use of vowels and consonants in proper diction. 25 selected chorales and 25 selected hymns used in the instruction of diction. Four-part singing at sight.

HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT CREDITS REQUIRED FOR GRADUATION A credit equals a course given for fifty minutes at least five times a week throughout the year.

Each student must also earn .4 credit in physical edu­ cation for each year of attendance. Students must earn as many credits in Religion each year as are offered. The passing mark is D, and the average of the two semesters wi11 be used in the promotion of scholars from grade to grade.

A diploma will be awarded upon the completion of this course.

GRADING SYSTEM Passing grades are A, B, C, and D; the condition and failure grades are E (condition), F (failure) and I (in­ complete).

A "failure" (F) in a one-semester course necessitates a repetition of that course. A "failure" (F) in either se­ mester of a two-semester course necessitates a repetition of the entire course.

The grade I (incomplete) indicates that a student, for reasons satisfactory to the instructor in charge, has been unable to complete the work of the course. This grade is given only when the work already done has been of accept­ able quality. Any student receiving this grade will be given an opportunity to complete such course according to the stipulations laid down by the instructor in charge. If an "incomplete" (I) is not converted into a passing grade during the next semester of the student's residence, he 38

loses the credit in the subject for the semester in which he received the incomplete grade.

All conditions (E's ) of the first semester in a twosemester course may be removed by obtaining a C in such subjects in the following semester. All conditions (E's) in the second semester may be removed by examination within thirty (30) days after the beginning of the fall semester, except that in Latin a condition may also be removed by obtaining a C in this subject in the first semester of the next school year.

In one-semester courses all conditions (E's) may be removed only by satisfactory examination; arrangements for such examinations must be made with the instructor in charge at the beginning of the next semester.

Two conditions (E's) on the report at the end of the school year can not be removed. Student must repeat same class.
