NoTICE. In order to decide as to the advisability of permanently engaging a specialjteacher for the business department, Mr. H. W. BEHNKE was temporarily put in charge of this department. The success of this arrangement is so apparent, that it will undoubtedly be continued in the future,

PREFATORY REMARKS. The Teachers' Seminary of Dr. Martin Luther College at New Ulm, Minn., was organized in 1893 under a reso足 lution of the General Evangelical-Lutheran Synod of Wis足 consin, Minnesota, Michigan, and other States. It is sup足 ported by voluntary contributions from the congregations belonging to that body. The organization of the Seminary was prompted by the necessity of supplying Lutheran pa足 rochial schools in the Northwest with competent teachers, and this consideration primarily governs the selection of branches to be taught, and the determination of the ends to be attained. At the same time, the two lower preparatory classes offer a course which will afford sufficient training for entering the third preparatory class of any college for the purpose of completing a classical course. Finally, by arranging an extra business course for such students as desire it, the institution affords desirable opportunities to prepare for business life.

Many pupils of the Academic Department took up one or several branches taught in the Preparatory Department, while others studied preparatory branches exclusively.

Those who were enrolled for the full Bm,iness Course, were instructed in Shorthand, Typewriting, Book-keeping, Commercial Law, Penmanship, Commercial Arithmetic, and Spelling. The following text-books were used: Pernin's Universal Phonography; Ellis' Tablet System of Book-keeping Comp.; Reed's Word Lessons in Spelling; J.C. Bryant's Commercial Law: The Model Arithmetic, <Ellis Pub. Co., Battle Creek, Mich ) ; Pernin's Business Dictation Book; Remington's Typewriter Instructor. The Department is furnished with a Remington No. 6, a Smith Premier, and a Densmore Typewriter.

DR. MARTIN LUTHER COLLEGE was erected A. D. 1884 by the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Minnesota and other States, and is situated in the southwestern part of the city of New Ulm, Minn. The location is healthy and very beau­ tiful, as the college-building is surrounded by a fine natural park and lies upon a wooded bluff, which affords a charming view of the town and of a portion of the valley of the Min­ nesota River.

The Teacher's Seminary, under the control of the Gene­ ral Evangelical Lutheran Synod of -Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and other States, offers a thorough education in pedagogical theory and practice. Any information concern­ ing it may be obtained by addressing the undersigned pre­ sident of the institution. . The Preparatory Department comprises three classes, with a curriculum designed to furnish adequate preparation to those who wish to enter the Seminary. The work of the two lowest classes is equivalent to that done in the corre­ sponding classes of colleges generally. It will qualify a student to enter the third preparatory class of a college.

To these two departments. there has been added an Academy, or High-school, which is intended to afford an opportunity for obtaining an advanced education, to those who feel the necessity of a better preparation for the business of life than the common school can offer. There can be no douht as to the desirability of such an advanced course, for the future farmer not less than for the business man that is· to be. Knowledge is power, and a treasure to the person who posesses it. Being a religious institution, Dr. Martin Luther College, besides giving the assurance of thorough instruction, is a desirable school by reason ·of its professedly Christian character.

All courses of the institution are open to persons of both sexes. The Faculty requires every pupil entering the Academy to select a sufficient number of branches for study to keep him, or her, adequately and profitably employed.

take religious instruction with the class to which they may be assigned.

Besides furnishing testimonials of good moral character, pupils must be able to read and write fluently, in English or German, and must have mastered the four elementary operations in arithmetic.

Every pupil is required to be duly respectful to the members of the Faculty and, in general, to be irreproachable in deportment.

By entering the institution, a pupil agrees to observe carefully all rules that are, or may be, made by the Faculty. Particular attention is called to the following requirements: Every pupil is held responsible for damage done to whatever property of the institution he, or she, may use.

As a guarantee, $1.00 must be deposited with the president on entering the institution, this sum to be refunded, less cost of repairs for which the pupil may be responsible, when he, or she, leaves the institution.

All inmates of the college-building are required to attend the regular day-services of the Lutheran Church at this place, unless they are excused from this rule by special arrangement.

All mail-matter directed to those who lodge in the college-building must pass through the hands of the president, or his representative; they must therefore be delivered to him by the post-master. Parents or guardians who

put a boy to board in our college, do thereby consent to the arrangement above described, as do also those pupils who, being of age, enter the college household by their own free will. This rule is intended as a protection against the practices of certain firms who use the mails for disseminating dangerous and immoral reading-matter, particularly among college-students.

Every pupil is required to attend classes regularly. For every recitation missed, excuse must be duly made to the teacher of the class in question.

Demerit marks may be given for bad behavior as well as for wilful neglect of class-work. For twenty such marks, a pupil will be reprimanded before the Faculty; a hundred marks, incurred during one school-year, assure expulsion.

The appointment of a special teacher for the business department has resulted so very satisfactorily that we may safely assert that our institution affords most desirable faci­ lities for pursuing those studies which are commonly re­ garded as necessary for any business man. We bespeak particular attention for the Pernin System of Phonography which we teach. This system of shorthand was awarded a diploma at the World's Fair in Chicago, for ease of learntng, brevity, and legibility. It is not in any way related to the old systems which require an inmeasurable amount of energy and time in their acquisition, as it may be learned by any person of average ability. It has no positions, no shaded characters, and expresses all vowels in an unmistakable manner. One of our pupils, besides pursuing an extensive course of study, succeeded in acquiring, within three months, a speed of 100 words a minute, and was able to read his notes easily. There is hardly another acquirement which can be considered so universally useful as even moderate skill in this system of shorthand.

To derive adequate benefit from attending a college, pupils should not cut their stay too short, nor confine their work to the business branches proper. If exclusive atten­ tion is given to the latter, a fair degree of proficiency may usually, indeed, be attained within the space of about five months. But book-keeping, shorthand, typewriting and arithmetic do not furnish a complete education for anyone, without the addition of such studies as language, geography, history, natural sciences, and religion. We therefore strongly urge all young people who are able to attend our school to arrange for at least a year's stay, in order to obtain more than merely a certain amount of mechanical skill, which, tho desirable enough in itself, ought not to form the chief end of study. To broaden the mind by acquiring valuable ideas is the proper aim of young people's life. For this reason, all our courses, except those of the business depart­ ment, are laid out so as to occupy the pupil throughout the school-year. A program can be easily arranged for any pupil, to give profitable employment for a ten month's stay.

But the business branches (shorthand, typewriting, book­ keeping and commercial arithmetic) are taught mostly by

individual instruction, so that a pupil may enter this de­ partment at almost any time.

RATES OF TUITION. ·-. I -l

I. General Course (languages, mathematics, natural sciences, history, geography, drawing, penmanship), $4 a month.

II. Bookkeeping, alone, $6 a month; together with any branches of the general course, $7 a month.

III. Shorthand and Typewriting, alone, $6 a month; together with any branches of the general course, $7 a month.

IV. Shor.thand, Typewriting and Bookkeeping, in.combination, $8 a month. ($10 will be charged for the use of the typewriters, if pupils do not wish to take course in shorthand).

V. Music-lessons will be charged for extra in all cases, as follows: Organ or piano lessons taken with the regular classes, $5 a term; violin lessons, $4 a term. Special individual lessons: Organ or piano, 12 lessons for $7.50; violin, 12 lessons for $5. The above rates include use of piano or organ for practice.

Discounts will be given from the above rates on prepay­ ment, as follows: Prepayment for 3 months, 10 per cent.; for 5 months, 15 per cent.; for the entire school-year, 20 per cent. If payment is made at the end of the pupils' stay, two weeks and above will be counted as a full month.

A limited number of young men will find board and lodging in the college-building, at the rate of $2.00 a week, prepayment to be made for at least 8 weeks at a time. Every boarder paying this sum is furnished board and light, a table, chair, book-self, bed-stead, and wardrobe. Fuel is bought by the inmates of each separate living-room.

Application for admission should be made at as early a date a8 possible. On entering the institution, each pupil is required to report to the president.
