PREFATORY REMARKS. The Teachers' Seminary of Dr. Martin Luther College at New Ulm, Minn., was organized in 1893 under a reso足 lution of the General Evangelical-Lutheran Synod of Wis足 consin, Minnesota, Michigan, and other States.
It is sup足
ported by voluntary contributions from the congregations belonging to that body.
The organization of the Seminary
was prompted by the necessity of supplying Lutheran pa足 rochial schools in the Northwest with competent teachers, ,and this consideration primarily governs the selection of branches to be taught, and the determination of the ends to be attained. At the same time the two lower preparatory classes offer a course which will afford sufficient training for entering the third preparatory class of any college for the purpose of completing a classical course.
Finally, by
arranging an extra business course for such students as desire it, the institution affords desirable opportunities to prepare for business life.

New Ulm, Minn.
General Information. DR. MARTIN LUTHER COLLEGE was erected A. D. 1884 b y the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Minnesota and other States, and is situated in the southwestern part of the city of New Ulm, Minn. The location is healthy and very beau ti:ful, as the college-building is surrounded by a fine natural park and lies upon a wooded bluff, which affords a charming view of the town and of a portion of the valley of the Min nesota River. The Teachers' Seminary, under the control of the Gene ral Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and other States, offers a thorough education in pedagogical theory and practice. Any information concern ing it may be obtained by addressing the undersigned pre sident of the institution. The Preparatory Department comprises three classes, with a curriculum designed to furnish adequate preparation to those who wish to enter the Seminary. The work of the two lowest classes is equivalent to that done in the corre sponding classes of colleges generally. It will qualify a student to enter the third preparatory class of a college. To these two departments, there has been added an Academy, or High-school, which is intended to afford an opportunity for obtaining an advanced education, to those who feel the necessity of a better preparation for the business of life than the common school can offer. There can be no doubt as to the desirability of such an advanced course, for the future farmer not less than for the business man that is to be. Knowledge is power, and a treasure to the person who posesses it. Being a religious institution, Dr. Martin Luther College, besides giving the assurance of thorough instruction, is a desirable school by reason of its professedly Christian character.

All courses of the institution are open to persons of both sexes. The Faculty requires every pupil entering the Academy to select a sufficient number of branches for study to keep him, or her, adequately and profitably employed. Pupils coming from Lutheran congregations are expected to take religious instruction with the class to which they may be assigned. Besides furnishing testimonials of good moral character, pupils must be able to read and write fluently, in English or German, and must have mastered the four elementary operations in arithmetic. It is exceedingly desirable that all pupils, without ex ception, enter upon their studies on the first day of the school year, to remain until the last day of the third term. All our principal courses in language work and the sciences are arranged with a view toward employing the student throughout the year. Besides it is unreasonable to expect very satisfactory results from an attendance of from one to three months. However, as it usually happens that some pupils are unavoidably detained until fall work on the farm is completed, the faculty has decided to open the courses in Book-keeping, Phonography, and Commercial Law on the first day of November, completing them by the end of the second term. This arrangement allows five months for the special business course. As our academy pupils, almost without 'exception, have shown themselves to be greatly in need of language and arithmetic practice the amount of work involved makes it absolutely necessary to success, that allowance of this time should not be abridged. Pupils of the Acll;demy entering in September, will find their time amply occupied by other studies and typewriter practice. Tuition-fees are charged as follows: $12.75 For the first term For the second and third terms each - $10. 75 For business course Nov. 1 to March 31 - $20.00
24
DR. MARTIN LUTHER COLLEGE.
The fees entitle the pupil to select any of the courses of study pursued by the class which he may have been assigned to; they also entitle him to the use of the typewriters owned by the college. Music lessons will be charged for extra as follows: Violin lessons, 50 cents each; piano lessons, 75 cents each, including the use of piano for practice. Young men find board and lodging in the college building at the following rates: First term $32.00 Second and third terms each $24.00 Nov. 1 until March 31 - $40.00 Coal-oil and service is furnished at the rate of $1.50 for the year. Students provide their own fuel. Every student boarding at the college must have his own mattress and other bedding, wash-basin, lamp etc. The college furnishes a bedstead, table, shelf and chair, one dollar being required as a deposit in guarantee of careful use of the property of the institution. This deposit is returned in full when the student leaves the college, if there are no claims against him for wilful destruction of college property. Young ladies may find board and lodging with private families in town at reasonable rates. Arrangements will be made by the President of the institution if request is made in good time. Every student is expected to observe all rules of the institution, and generally, to lead an irreproachable life .. Any further information will be cheerfully given. Ad dress all communications to the President,
