NOI'ICE. DR. M.\RTIN LUTHER COLLEGE, an institution ., belonging to the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Minnesota and other States, retained, during the scholastic year 1892,- 93, its original ch,aracter.

It comprised a theological, a collegiate, an academic, and a normal department, thus affording the student opportunity to prepare either for the ministry of the gospel, for wor~ in our parochial schools, or for business. In July 1893, the Synod of Minnesota trans.ferred the use of the' college building to the General Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and other States, whereupon the general body resolved to locate its normal school or teachers ' seminary at New Ulm, Minn. This has now been accom:plished. On the sixth day of September 1893 the Teachers' Seminary of the General Synod above named was opened. 'l'his catalogue will, therefore, give two-fold information. On pages 5-12 will be found a detailed account concerning the last scholastic year of the former institution; while on pages 13-18 we publish the regulations by which the Teachers' Seminary is to be governed. The latter will plainly designate the present character of the institution.

REGULATIONS

ADOPTED BY THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE TEACHERS'' SE MINARY AT''NEW ULM;· MINN. 1. The aim of this institution is to educate competent teach ers for the parochial schools of the General Synod of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and other States. 2. To accomplish this, young persons who intend to follow the calling of teachers are to be educated in the true fear of God, in order that they may be willi:Jg and able, later 01i, to fill their office as true Christians to the glory of God and the everlasting benefit of the children which may be entrusted to their care. Besides, they are to be equipped with all learning and ability, which may be re quired to successfully perform the duties of their calling. 3. The object to be attained by this institution in the pupils entrusted to it is as follows: a. Its graduates must be upright Christians, as far as may be judged. They must bear a blameless character and be free from grosser moral faults and defects. They must understand precisely the mission and the object 0f our parochial schools, and must be able as well as willing, truly to educate and thoroughly to instruct children. b. They must have a thorough- and clear knowledge of the doctrine of our church, and an intimate acquaintance with the Bible, the Catechism and Hymn-book. They must furthermore know the most important teachings of ecclesiastical history and the symboli cal books of our church. They must, above all, have a sufficient conception of the distinction between Law and Gospel, in order that they may rightly administer their educational office. c. They must be able correctly to speak, read and write the German language. d, Of all English branches, the study of which is obligatory in the state normal schools, they must become masters to such a degree that they are able to obtain a first class certificate for teaching elementary classes.

17 e. They must, furthermore, acquire all necessary knowledge cand ability in pedagogy, general history of the world, music and / . drawing, so as to enable them to successfully undertake the entire -control of our parochial schools. ~ 4. The institution comprises two departments: the seminary proper, and a preparatory school. The latter is a general educational institute, and is designed so to prepare young persons in a three years' course as to enable them to follow intelligently the instruction _given in the seminary proper. The seminary has a two years' course . . It broadens and deepens the results obtained in the preparatory classes and introduces its pupils theoretically and practically to the proper work of the educator. ~ 5. Pupils seeking admission into the lowest preparatory ,class must a. have Christian i. e. Lu1 heran convictions. b. posse.ss the necessary natural capacities. c. be able to read and write the German and English languages, understand the Catechism and have a thorough knowledge of the four fundamental processes of mathematics. NOTE. Should any pupil lack sufficient preparation in one branch of study or the other, the seminary will lend. its aid to his making up the deficiency as rapidly as possible. ~ 6. The method of education and instruction in the preparatory .department is the same as in a Lutheran preparatory classical school. But eare is especially to be taken to -make the method of instruction .as nearly perfect as possible, in order that it may from the first be a pattern to future teachers. The branches of study also coincide with those taught in the three lower classes of a classical school or gymnasium, but without Greek. ¡ On the other hand, there will be added drawing also in Quarta, and music in all classes. ~ 7. The seminary proper is a normal_ school in the accepted sense of the term. Persons desiring to enter it, must speak, read and write the German and English languages with essential correctness. They must be able to express themselves clearly and especially to narrate passably well. Persons, who do not possess the gift of teaching or do not admit of the hope that they may become Christian -educators, are not to be accepted as pupils. In the case of future teachers not so much depends upon very extensive knowledge, but that they be useful men, able to accomplish something. Competent teachers of firm Christian characters are to .be produced. The instruction is to be given in such a manner, that not only is the right object-matter presented to the pupils, but that they are

18 interested in it and observe how a correct method is used in its: treatment. They will become users of good methods only by being, themselves, well' trained. This must, of course, be supplemented by \ theoretical instruction and class-practice. To this may be added the following information: Every applicant for admission must submit to the President satisfactory testimonials of good moral character; and students com ing from another college must present certificate of honorable dis missal from the Institution where they pursued their studies. Although the college in its present form is principally a normal school, such pupils will still be admitted, who do not intend to study for the ministry or to become teachers, provided that they are will ing to take up all branches of study (Latin alone excepted) which are provided for on the program of the class they are about to enter. Tuition (including lessons in music) is free to those students who enter the institution with the intention of becoming ministers or teachers. Other students will be charged for tuition and inciden tals as follows: $12. 75. First term 10. 75. Second and third terms each . 50. Music lessons extra, each No money can be refunded in case of dismissal or leaving before the end of a term. Board and lodging is provided for in the college building. Each resident student must procure his own mattress nd other bedding and share with his room-mates the expense for fuel. Lamp-oil will be furnished at five cents a week. Plain but wholesome and substantial food is given at $60 for the scholastic year. This rate, however, is good only for those students who prepare for the ministry or for work in our· parochial schools. All others pay one third more, or $80 per year, All bills must be paid within two weeks after entering the school. If after that time no payment be made an additional charge of one dollar will be made. Every student will be held responsible for the furniture furn- ished by the Institution, and the cost of repairing any damage thereto will be charged to him. In case of injury to the building, or to any of the furniture, apparatus, or other property of the institution the damage will be charged to the student or students known to be im mediately concerned. In the interests of everybody concerned it is confidently expected that all students make their appearance punctually on the day ap pointed for the opening of every term. Tardiness causes loss of time to the classes and great inconvenience to the professors.
