Dear Spring 2025 Graduates of the VCU School of Education, Congratulations on your accomplishment! As graduates of the spring class of 2025, you have prepared yourselves to meet the challenges of today’s world. You have the tenacity, the creativity, and commitment to be successful. We’re most proud of what you will accomplish and the impact that you will have.

At the VCU School of Education, we are committed to meeting the needs of the communities that we serve in a way that is meaningful and engaging to our students. That commitment is reflected in part by maintaining our reputation as one of the nation’s top education schools. In recognition of that, we were recently ranked #15 Best Public School of Education in the country by U.S. News & World Report in their 2025 rankings. We are proud that the School of Education is so highly ranked, as it speaks to the quality of education our students experience.

The VCU School of Education is a leader in education, and in preparing educators and other professionals to be successful and make an impact in their communities. Starting right here in the city of Richmond and expanding to our surrounding communities, we have made a commitment to do innovative and effective work that puts our schools, children, and families first.

The Charles P. Ruch Award for Excellence in Teaching

The Charles P. Ruch Award for Excellence in Teaching honors Dr. Charles P. Ruch, a former provost and dean of the School of Education. When Dr. Ruch left VCU in 1992 to become the president of Boise State University, the School of Education chose to honor him by creating a faculty award in his honor. Dr. Ruch valued the traditional university faculty roles in the triad mission of teaching, scholarship and service. He emphasized that scholarship and service are important in a modern metropolitan research university. He mirrored these values in his work at VCU by teaching throughout his tenure as dean and provost.

The Spring 2025 recipient of the Charles P. Ruch Award for Excellence in Teaching is Dr. Beth Bukoski. Dr. Bukoski is an Associate Professor in the VCU School of Education’s Department of Educational Leadership and director of the Ed.D. in Leadership program. Bukoski holds a Ph.D. in educational administration from the University of Texas at Austin. She teaches a wide range of courses related to higher education, research and doctoral socialization and success utilizing liberatory pedagogies with an explicit focus on diversity, inclusion, social justice issues.

One student who nominated Dr. Bukoski had this to say about their experience with the professor:

“It is my distinct pleasure to recommend Dr. Beth Bukoski for this prestigious award. Dr. Bukoski has been a shining beacon throughout my time in the EdD program. Affectionately known as the glue that holds our cohort together, Dr. BB consistently goes above and beyond to support each of us.

I vividly remember how nervous I felt during the summer session—until Dr. Bukoski delivered her warm and welcoming message. For reference, this is my fourth program at VCU. Previously, I completed three executive programs at the VCU School of Business. With the support of many others, Dr. Bukoski has made every member of our cohort feel seen, heard, and valued.

As a mentor, she can always be counted on for sound advice and steady guidance. What I truly admire about Dr. Bukoski is how much she does behind

the scenes, often in quiet and unrecognized ways, to ensure our success. Her unwavering care and commitment to excellence have not only inspired me to grow, but have also challenged me to improve every space I lead.

After more than 27 years of military service, I didn’t think I had much left to learn about leadership—until I met Dr. Bukoski.

In closing, and on behalf of so many others, I wholeheartedly urge you to honor Dr. Bukoski with this well-deserved recognition.”

Another nomination noted, “Dr. Beth Bukoski is a shining example of excellence in education. She consistently demonstrates the qualities that have long been valued and emphasized by the School of Education faculty. Over the past three years, Dr. Bukoski has taught two of my doctoral courses, been my program advisor, and capstone chair, and provided invaluable guidance and encouragement throughout my doctoral journey.

I often wonder how she manages it all. I have witnessed her exceptional ability to teach engaging courses, manage the Ed.D. program, host candidates for various SOE faculty positions, advise students, and chair capstone committees. Remarkably, she does all of this while continuing to write, publish, and encourage students along the way.

Dr. Bukoski fosters learning and intellectual curiosity by challenging her students to think critically and creatively. She encourages open expression in class, in writing, and supports students in finding and using their voices across various settings. She models effective teaching practices by using strategies such as projects, cooperative learning, timely feedback, and inquiry-based methods. These approaches not only address diverse learning styles but also promote deeper student engagement. I found myself more involved in class discussions and more inquisitive as a result.

Dr. Bukoski is also incredibly supportive and accessible. She communicates with students through various channels, including phone and text, and is always available to provide clarity and encouragement. I remember being extremely anxious about a team debate where I was assigned to argue a viewpoint I personally disagreed with. I struggled with how to effectively persuade my audience while honoring the assignment and supporting my team. Dr. Bukoski met with me several times, patiently providing guidance, resources, and reassurance. Thanks to her support, I felt more confident, and the debate was a success. Her feedback and that of our audience were overwhelmingly positive, and I was deeply grateful for her help.

Dr. Bukoski is well-known for her positive attitude and influence. She often ends emails and meetings with uplifting phrases like “Just keep swimming!” or “Keep going!” These small affirmations made a big difference, often turning a challenging day into a more hopeful one. Her positive energy has been a constant source of encouragement throughout my three-year doctoral journey. I wholeheartedly nominate her for the Charles P. Ruch Award for Excellence in Teaching.”
