FLOOD STORIES Designing with local stories of flood in Segamat How can I, as a Landscape Architecture, act through design by using local stories to help with the problems of flooding in Segamat, Malaysia?

Segamat has experienced traumatic floods since the 1950’s that leave the town full of muddy sludge and dirty rubbish creating problems of health, and effecting the town’s economic, social and environmental being.

The research began with three stories that related directly to flood.

First, there is a legend concerning the region’s tendency to flood. A myth tells of a dragon sleeping underground, and that Segamat will experience very bad floods when the dragon rolls over to change its sleepinf position. The dragon is called Ruby Dragon. Design with this story will be important to continue this important myth for generations to come, as many of residents of Segamt have forgotten most of them, even among older generations.

The design will follow the different flood levels to create a flood warning system so residents can be aware and ready to pack to escape from the flood. I tis also a monument design about the flood dragon in Segamat. In addition, relief centres also can be applied with this story, escape and relief from the dragon flood. During the dier months the relief centers can be a market place or clb house for recreation.

Secondly, is the story of Segamat’s history. Segamat was originally called Rantau Panjang, however the town assumed the river’s name only at the turn of the 20th century when Prime Minister of Malacca and his troops were retreating to Johor after the fall of Malacca to the invading Portuguese.

The Prime Minister and his troops stopped and rested by the river in the area and drank water from the river. After the drink, the Prime Minister exclaimed, “Segar amat!”, or ‘Very refreshing!” in Malay, and named the river Segar Amat, which overtime evolved into Segamat. Unfortunately, the river has become polluted due to the severe floods that occur. The design and researchfor this story will consider how-filteration and water storage along the river can filter and clean the river water quality.

Thirdly, due to the flood the soil is more fertile in Segamt. Agriculture is the main contributor of Segamar’s economy. Oil palm, rubber estate and durian fruit are mainly from this place. Although there is a flood benefit for agriculture but it also delays the harvesting time and produce may spoil.

Design with this story considers how agriculture can attach with the mythical dragon story and the history. Planting and harvesting as food for the relief centre. Water storage or retention pond can mitigate the flood to avoid damaging the crops.

As a result, design with local stories maybe related to social, economic and culture. It is a celebration and response to the neighbourhood relationship through design.

DRAGON AWAKE STORY Design for first story, dragon awake story.

Poles design and placed follow by the several flood water level with road. From flood increase to receding. Besides, these system also testing with two flood type which is flood with contour map and flood began from the river. These poles as a perimeter for different water level and also a warning system to alert the residents ready to pack. During the flood, people can see the height and depth of water from the poles. Without flood, it is also as a monument to dragon for people to remember and celebrate about Segamat.

Design for second story, dragon relief story. Relief centre is a place that helps people who has lost their home and placed by government when disaster happened. Relief centres deisgn at the town highest area from the contour in Segamat. Highest area in the town which is not affected from the flood. So, people can escape in a short time and move to relief center when flood. Walkway design connect to relief center which give as a direction for people to the relief centres. During the dier months the relief centers can be a market place or club house for recreation and event. This design can help the social construct in Segamat. Besides, design with this story considers how agriculture can attach with the mythical dragon story and the history. Planting and harvesting as food for the relief centre.

Design with third story, dragon restore story. , the river has become polluted due to the severe floods that occur. The design and research for this story will consider how filtration and water storage along the river can filter and clean the river water quality. Design follow by the lowest area in the town river side. Water storage or retention pond also can mitigate the flood to avoid damaging the crops. Design with levels for sport field and wetlands field can help purified the river water and underground water storage can helps mitigate the flood.

During the dry time, this place can utilise for recreation.

FLOOD RECEEDING When the flood receeding, water accumulate at the lowest level. Therefore, the flood problem, disease will happen.

Design with the lowest level for wetland and water storage to mitigate the flood problems.
