TOLLE LEGE

St. Rita of Cascia High School offers young men a unique opportunity and educational experience based in the tradition of the Order of St. Augustine and its core values of Truth, Unity, and Love.
We are pleased to share in the following pages of this magazine the exciting news regarding the growth and success we have experienced as a school since the last edition of Tolle Lege. As we continue this academic year, I’d like to share with you the message and vision that our faculty and staff have united behind. This same message is shared with our prospective families.
WE BELIEVE in educating the whole person. in gaining knowledge by uniting the efforts of the heart and the mind. in searching the mind for God, who is Truth and Love. in a journey of discovering truth through self-knowledge. in interaction and sharing to create a community of friends and brothers.
At St. Rita of Cascia High School students will be offered an individualized experience with many opportunities to learn and grow.
OUR YOUNG MEN will be known — he will not get lost in the crowd or disappear in a corner. will be valued — he will be fully supported in his distinctive journey. will be understood — he will be encouraged on his path of discovery and expression.
This reality is made possible through the generous support from alumni and friends like you. I invite you to visit campus for a tour, or attend an upcoming game or event to see our students experience in action. The campus is a home away from home for the entire St. Rita Family. Thank you for your loyal support.
May the powerful intercession of St. Rita of Cascia continue to be a positive driving force in your lives and families.
Sincerely,
Deacon John Donahue, J.D., Ed.D. President
On the heels of welcoming the Class of 2028 — the largest class of Ritamen in five years — our Admissions Team has been busy preparing for the Entrance Exam and welcoming another class of Ritamen with the Class of 2029. Here is a glimpse at what the team has been up to!
Since the beginning of 2024, prospective students have had over 530 shadow experiences — with 212 7th grade shadows in the spring and an anticipated 320 8th graders this fall.
On Shadow Days, not only do students experience a day in the life of a Ritaman, but also receive a tour of our campus, meet faculty and staff members who moderate extracurriculars, as well as complete a “Ritaman Experience Card” with the following tasks:
– Find the fight song
– Take a selfie with a teacher
– Find the Augustinian Values of Truth, Unity, and Love around campus
– Play rock, paper, scissors with St. Rita students as a way to connect with more Ritamen
The St. Rita Admissions Department participated in 34 Catholic or public-school fairs, meeting hundreds of prospective St. Rita families. We also visited 40 Catholic grammar schools to speak to 8th grade boys about the advantages of St. Rita and a single gender high school education.
Open House took place on Sunday, October 13. Over 100 families received tours by our Student Ambassadors Club. Future Ritamen and their families had the opportunity to tour the school, explore our 35+ student organizations, meet our student athletes, learn more about our curriculum, and so much more.
This year, families and restaurants opened their doors to us for a more intimate setting for future St. Rita families to learn more about all that we have to offer. Thank you to the families and businesses that hosted us for the following parishes: Christ the King, St. Barnabas, St. Christina, St. Cajetan, St. John Fisher, Bridgeport Catholic Academy, St. Jerome, and St. Gabriel.
Thank you to all of the future Ritamen and their families who joined us at any of these events — in addition to our Mom’s Night Out, Escape Room, Andrew Smialek Awards, and Fr. Tom’s Retreats in the Shrine Chapel. We hope to see you on Saturday, December 7. Register today!

Ritamen get a head
St. Rita is proud to offer a selection of dual credit courses with partner universities — Benedictine University, Dominican University, Grand Canyon University, and Saint Xavier University — allowing Ritamen to take college courses while in high school. This unique opportunity allows students to earn both high school and college credit.
Most of these courses are taught by St. Rita faculty members who hold a Master’s Degree in their subject area and serve as adjunct professors for their partner universities. The faculty members provide rigorous instruction aligned with the universities’ course standards and learning objectives. The college credit hours students earn are transferable to most universities.
The Advanced Placement (AP) program plays an integral role in the curriculum of St. Rita High School. As a college preparatory school, St. Rita offers AP courses as its highest and most challenging academic experience. These are truly college-level courses, and as a result, many colleges and universities offer placement or credit based on students’ scores on the AP exams.
St. Rita recognizes the advanced nature of these courses with a weighted GPA calculation.
St. Rita currently offers the following AP courses:
Biology
Calculus AB
Chemistry
Computer Science Principles
English Language and Composition
English Literature and Composition
European History
Human Geography

In August, St. Rita High School announced that its sprawling 37-acre campus now features completely air-conditioned classrooms.
The $1 million project began last spring and concluded on Thursday, August 15 in time for Freshmen Orientation — the largest incoming class of students in five years.
“We take pride in providing an Augustinian education for our students; and this upgrade to our beautiful campus will ensure our Ritamen can make the most of it,” President Deacon John Donahue shared. “As a growing institution, it is our top priority to ensure our classrooms are an effective learning environment for our students.”
On the heels of this major cooling upgrade, St. Rita administration is also in the process of developing a strategic plan, which includes a master facility plan.
100%
“We have so much momentum at a critical time for St. Rita High School,” Deacon John Donahue stated. “This was a large undertaking for our facilities team. Accomplishing this for our students and faculty while we are planning for our bright future has us all feeling excited about more positive changes to come.”
St. Rita, originally located at 63rd Street & Claremont Avenue, moved to the campus on 77th Street & Western Avenue in 1990 and took over the Quigley South building which was constructed in 1961 for Archbishop Quigley Preparatory Seminary.
“It has always been a goal of ours to get these rooms air conditioned, and it feels particularly great to reach this goal as we celebrate 35 years on this campus,” Fr. Tom McCarthy, O.S.A. ‘83, Director of Community Relations shared. “Now the whole building is cooled.”
This summer, Doyle Stadium saw the first stage of a multi-year renovation plan complete with the installation of a new scoreboard for Pat Cronin Field, located in the William T. Doyle ’41 Stadium.
As the life of the previous scoreboard began to wind down, the decision was made to move forward with a new one before the start of the the 2024-25 academic year and athletic seasons.
The project is being led by Head Football Coach Martin Hopkins ‘09 and will benefit Mustang football, soccer, rugby, and lacrosse for seasons to come.
“We really saw this as an opportunity to lay the foundation for the future of Doyle Stadium,” Hopkins ’09 explained. “So many of our alumni played with the other scoreboard, myself included, and while I am sad to lose the memories, I know the future capabilities will really benefit our current Mustangs and generations to come.”
The previous scoreboard, generously donated by Hall of Famer Denney Lucas’ 66, was installed in 2006. It was the second scoreboard since the St.
High School campus moved from 63th & Claremont to it’s current location on Western.
The next phase of stadium upgrades will culminate in the Strategic Plan’s Master Facilities Plan, which is being developed currently and will be rolled out with the help of Hopkins, who is also the Director of Strategic Development, in the near future.
The stadium, which is named in honor the late William T. Doyle ‘41 — St. Rita Hall of Fame Inductee (1990), Crest of St, Augustine Awardee (2013), and major donor — will undergo a full upgrade including a new video screen for the scoreboard, new turf, and a new press box, among other exciting additions to be announced in the coming months.
“The future is bright for Mustang Athletics,” Athletic Director AJ Avery ’12 said. “It’s an exciting time for not only our student athletes but also the dedicated coaches and staff who bring this stadium to life game after game, season after season.
More news will be announced in 2025.
On Thursday, October 3, a new St. Rita of Cascia statue was blessed and dedicated on the North side of the St. Rita Shrine Chapel located on 77th Street and South Western Avenue.
Generously donated by Dr. Gene and Sistie McEnery — parents of St. Rita High School Board of Director Chairperson Clare Napleton (HON) and grandparents of alumni Marty Napleton ’13, Frank Napleton ’18, Luke Napleton ’20 — the statue of the school’s and Chapel’s patroness now sits by the entry doors to the St. Rita Shrine Chapel.
“We were at the Shrine Chapel and my parents wanted to see the statue out on 77th Street when we realized that it wasn’t her there – it was St. Nicholas of Tolentine,” Napleton shared. “My parents are huge supporters of Catholic education and decided they wanted to contribute to this project and really made it happen.”
The statue, which was created with marble from Carrara, Italy, depicts St. Rita in her traditional Augustinian black habit while holding a crucifix and roses. The
piece also shows a stigmata on her forehead, a wound that appeared on St. Rita later in life and remained until her death in 1457.
“A statue is a way to visualize the actual person St. Rita — by seeing this statue, we can enter into her extraordinary life story,” Fr. Tom McCarthy, O.S.A. ‘83 shared. “I can’t think of a more beautiful way of welcoming the tens of thousands of people who come to the Shrine to worship and praise God each year. She will be there to greet them wherever they are at in life — if they are attending our monthly Novenas, or celebrating sacraments like weddings and baptisms, or experiencing moments of incredible grief at funerals of members of the St. Rita family as well as fallen first responders of the Chicago Fire Department and Chicago Police Department. We are so grateful of the beautiful generosity of the McEnery’s.”
The Shrine Chapel, which is home to a first-class St. Rita relic, hosts biweekly all school masses where Ritamen also take part in the liturgy. The space is also open to students every Tuesday morning
for weekly Eucharistic Adoration for those seeking sacred silence.
“The Shine Chapel plays an integral role in the world-class Augustinian education offered at St. Rita,” President Deacon John Donahue J.D., Ed.D. said. “The McEnery’s contribution of this statue serves as another present reminder of all that we do here in St. Rita’s name.”
The dedication ceremony was presided over by Bishop Daniel Turley, O.S.A., Fr. Tom McCarthy, O.S.A., and Deacon John Donahue, and attended by the McEnery and Napleton families, as well as Novena attendees and St. Rita students.
The general public can view the new statue at the Novena Masses, which takes place the first Thursday of every month at 7:00 PM, in the Shrine Chapel. Confessions are available at 6:00 PM. For more information, visit stritashrinechicago.com.
THANK YOU to the McEnery Family for this meaningful contribution to our school community and campus.

Winter and the Holiday Season is upon us and there is a palpable feeling of positivity and growth at St. Rita as we look forward to the second semester of the school year and continue to live out our core values of Truth, Unity, and Love.
This year, we’ve experienced a 12% increase in enrollment — a major driver of the momentum we are experiencing. Faculty, staff, administration, parents, and students all are enjoying St. Rita’s current success and optimism for an even brighter future, as we are projecting another double-digit increase in enrollment for the Class of 2029.
Enrollment isn’t the only area where we’ve experienced growth. Last fiscal year, ending June 30, 2024, we raised over $3,000,000, through the generosity of alumni, benefactors, and friends. This is a remarkable uptick in gifts from the previous fiscal year — helping us fill the budget gap created by the increased cost of educating our students vs. maintaining our competitive tuition price.
In the classroom, we have expanded our innovative college-prep offerings, including an electrical program and increased dual-credit academic options thanks to partnerships with Saint Xavier University, Dominican University, Benedictine University, and Grand Canyon University.
We continue to upgrade infrastructure and improve the facilities, including completing Phase I of a new Doyle Stadium scoreboard, state-of-the-art air conditioning for all classrooms, and adding a brand-new marble St. Rita of Cascia statue at the entrance of the St. Rita Shrine Chapel.
While we are advancing our strength as an institution, our work is never done. To plan the next five years, our President, Deacon John Donahue, J.D., Ed.D. and the board of directors have formed a committee that is currently finalizing a strategic plan. From that plan a master facilities plan will emerge. Please stay tuned for exciting details.
To shift gears, please note that St. Rita’s biggest fundraiser, the 36th Annual Caritas Gala, will be on Saturday, February 1, 2025 at The Ritz-Carlton. All are welcome at this event. Single tickets or table reservations will be available at stritahs.com. Please contact me if you have any questions. My phone number is (773) 925-6600 x6619, and my email is mswanson@stritahs.com.
Over the next several pages, you will find our Honor Roll of Donors. The generous support of these individuals, foundations and corporations enable St. Rita to operate as a best-value Augustinian Catholic Institution for young men.
Thank you to all for your steadfast support of the greatest Catholic School for young men on the Southside of Chicago.
St. Rita of Cascia, pray for us!
Best regards,

NICK LOMAGLIO ‘04 RANKED IN FORBES TOP NEXT-GEN ADVISORS RANKINGS
Nick LoMaglio ‘04, Founder and Lead Instructor of the Advice Beyond the Classroom (ABC) program, has been ranked #4 in Illinois (Chicago) and #64 Nationally in Forbes Top Next-Gen Advisors Rankings. Nick is currently one of the youngest Vice Presidents in Wealth Management at a global financial services firm. Nick says “dedicated mentors and internships are two of the most important factors in professional success.” Realizing that much success was built on the shoulders of generations before him, Nick used that as his inspiration to create Advice Beyond the Classroom in 2013.
ABC is an extracurricular program that teaches Ritamen the soft skills that lay a foundation for career exploration and future professional success. Founded over 12 years ago by Nick, ABC’s
curriculum helps students to develop their public speaking skills, practice the art of communication, learn how to build a personal brand, and create relationships with mentors that allow them to explore careers. Open to students from freshman to senior year, many students participate in the program over multiple years. Returning students are eligible to serve in leadership positions as well as peer mentors.

The 1905 Guild honors alumni and friends who have committed to leaving a legacy through their estate plans to assist the next generation of Ritamen. This honorary society celebrates the tradition of St. Rita of Cascia High School and its legacy to the future. It is comprised of generous benefactors who have provided for St. Rita in their estate plans in the way of a will, charitable remainder trust, gift annuity, life insurance policy, or remainder interest in a residence or farm.
The 1905 Guild is named to celebrate the year our tradition of excellence began on the Southside of Chicago. That year, Fr. James F. Green, O.S.A., brought Augustinian core values of Truth, Unity, and Love to 63rd and Oakley. During the 11 years since, 25,149 men have benefitted from these core values.
We thank all those who are a part of the 1905 Guild. We are grateful for their commitment to the ideals of Augustinians and St. Rita High School’s mission that continues to thrive today.
If you have any questions, or would like to include St. Rita of Cascia High School in your estate plans, please contact John Schmitt ‘84, Director of Development at (773) 925-6600 x6629 or jschmitt@stritahs.com.

St. Rita of Cascia High School is a Catholic college preparatory school for young men, rooted in the gospel of Jesus Christ and the tradition of St. Augustine, following the Augustinian philosophy of education.
St. Rita aims to form each student as a whole person: spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, physically, and socially, and to provide its young men with the necessary skills to succeed in college and in life, leading to lifelong learning and personal awareness.
Through the Augustinian core values of Veritas (truth), Unitas (unity), and Caritas (love), St. Rita strives to develop a bond between the members of the entire family: Augustinians, faculty, staff, students, parents, and alumni.
In the spirit of our Father, St. Augustine, we will be of one mind and one heart on our way to God.
