During the recent World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS), Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that the energy demands of the Indian population are projected to nearly double over the next two decades.

Global warming and climate change, caused by heat-producing greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide and ozone have been a major cause of concern the world over. From erratic rain at certain places to unexpected superstorms, cyclones or heat waves at others, all of these can affect fragile economies and impact the vulnerable poor.

Coal crisis & the road to energy security

The unprecedented heatwaves this year have caused an acute energy shortage, particularly coal that’s the dominant provider, severely impacting the speed of economic rebound needed after the Covid upheaval. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) observes that the number of heatwave days in India has been increasing, from 413 over 1981-1990 to 600 over 2011-2020. The rise in temperatures is attributed to climate change.
