A Place For All Seasons, A Place For Everyone
Winter 2026
Learn about Wehr’s deer in our “Critter Closeup” pg. 8
Director’s Message Cheers to the New Year! As we look back on 2025, we can be proud of the growth we saw in acres managed, volunteers recruited, people of all ages and abilities served, and conservation education not only at Wehr but throughout our Milwaukee County Parks. These successes were possible because of intentional community partnerships that helped expand our capacity to fulfill our mission. One partnership has brought a new face and diverse perspective to Wehr for the next nine months. Please join me in welcoming Joyce Williams, Community Engagement Intern with Public Allies of Wisconsin. Public Allies is a social justice organization committed to changing the face and practice of leadership by recruiting and training talented emerging leaders with a passion for social impact. Joyce is helping us expand our connections with indigenous and Latino populations in Milwaukee through her passion, expertise, and leadership. We are thrilled to have her, and likewise, she is delighted to be working with us. So, what is on the horizon in the new year? We are continuing our signage improvement efforts by installing parking lot signs that make visitors aware of the $5/car parking fee and make it easy to pay from their car via a contactless payment system. Don’t worry, Friends of Wehr members still benefit from free parking all year round. A signage plan is being developed for the trails as well, and we look forward to sharing more as plans unfold. Groundbreaking for the new Stewardship Garage and Service Yard was delayed by unexpected permitting requirements; however, contractors have been secured, and FOW members can expect progress and more details in the coming months.
2003 Boardwalk InterpretiveSigns
Visitors can look forward to the completion of the All-Abilities Loop trail coming soon. This project, started in 2002, illustrates our long-term commitment to being a welcoming place for people of all backgrounds and abilities
There is much to look forward to as we turn the calendar to 2026. Wehr continues to grow and thrive because of the strong community of staff, members, volunteers, partners, and participants. Volunteers building boardwalk in 2004

Friends of Wehr As we move into the start of the year, I wanted to take a moment to thank our Friends of Wehr members, volunteers, and donors for all you give in support of Wehr Nature Center. The past holiday season of giving was our best yet, meeting our goal to raise $10,000 through the Early Giving Day and Giving Tuesday campaign, which supports two initiatives close to our hearts: education and trail access for all. Special thanks to Betty A. Storey for her matching contribution. With this support, we will be able to finish the new boardwalk extension and provide more than 1,000 students with hands-on outdoor learning experiences through the Kids in the Park fund. As a reminder, there are many ways to support Friends of Wehr. Donations, memorial gifts, memberships, and Nature Store purchases all provide financial support for hands-on nature education programs for children, accessibility, natural areas management, and more. Please join us in marking your calendars for the following upcoming Friends of Wehr events. Native Plant Sale Saturday and Sunday, May 30 & 31

Volunteers New Volunteer Q&A and Orientation
Wednesdays, January 20, February 18, March 5-6:30 PM
If you’ve ever wanted to go home feeling the good kind of exhausted - fulfilled, overjoyed, and change-making, I invite you to join us at our Q&A Orientation for New Volunteers. Whether you have a passion for our Maple Sugaring Event in March, are looking for something to do in retirement, or want to contribute to a place you love visiting, volunteering at Wehr might be the right step for you. These evenings are designed to give any curious community member a chance to ask questions, learn about opportunities, and see how their skills and interests can grow here at Wehr. Together, we can continue to make Wehr a place where both people and nature thrive. I hope to see you soon. Open to anyone ages 14+. Walk-ins welcome Please email Sophia.detweiler@milwaukeecountywi.gov with questions.
Bob Housey Honored by SEWISC Wehr volunteer “Buckthorn” Bob Housey was awarded the 2025 Southeastern Wisconsin Invasive Species Council (SEWISC) Sweat Equity Award last fall for his many years of work removing invasive plants. Bob has donated over 1,000 hours to killing Buckthorn at Wehr over the past 13 years and helps educate the next generation of Buckthorn busters by leading students in our Weeds in the Wild school program. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition, Bob!
Wehr Loses a Friend Wehr lost a long-time friend and supporter with the passing of Jim Barnes in November. Jim wore many hats during his 22+ years of volunteering with Wehr, from FOW board member and secretary, to working with high schoolers on field trips, but phenology was his favorite. His meticulous plant ID skills and enthusiasm for sharing his knowledge of plants and birds with newcomers made him an indispensable member of our phenology group. We will miss his patience, quiet humor, and the deep passion he shared for the natural world. Donations to purchase a memorial bench at Wehr to honor Jim can be made here or in person at Wehr.
New Volunteers Welcome!

Get to Know Wehr’s Community Organizations Connect with a community of people who share your passion for nature at one of the clubs that call Wehr home. We’ll feature one organization in each newsletter this year.
Wehr Nature Center Camera Club
Founded in 1982 Meets at Wehr (or offsite) from 9-11 am on the second Saturday of each month. Visit their website or Facebook page to see the schedule of activities What does a camera club do? Club members meet year-round to learn about and celebrate photography. Their monthly session may feature a presentation or photo competition judging (open to the public), or a photography field trip or social gathering (members only). Examples of programs include sessions on wildlife, landscape, and portrait photography, photo editing, and how to take great pictures with a cellphone. Members have taken field trips to locations like museums, zoos, events, camera stores, and photo exhibitions. Who should come to a camea clubmeeting? Co-presidents, Linnea and Ramona, invite anyone interested in photography, beginner or expert, to attend a Wehr Photo competition judging Camera Club meeting and see what you think. “We are a very friendly and welcoming group. Come to a few meetings and join by paying membership dues at any time. You’ll have a chance to improve your photography skills and share with other photographers.”

Critter Close-up
White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) Lifespan: 3-5 years in the wild, but 20+ in captivity Favorite Foods: In winter, they browse on buds of woody shrubs and young trees, conifer leaves, nuts, and berries, and even water lilies and other aquatic plants. They prefer acorns, hickory nuts, and corn in the fall to help them prepare for the long winter. Deer have a 4-chambered stomach that is adapted to digest tough plant material. Deer browse their food on the move, barely chewing it as they go. The food is passed into their first stomach (the rumen), where helpful bacteria start breaking it down. Deer finish “eating” as they rest, coughing up food from the rumen to chew again before swallowing it into the rest of the stomach to absorb. Bizarre but true food fact: While white-tailed deer are primarily herbivores, they will consume nestling birds and eggs in summer to provide protein and calcium. Predators: Car-deer collisions are the primary cause of death for urban deer. Coyotes prey on fawns and occasionally adults, especially older or injured individuals. Family Life: Female deer give birth in May and June to one, two, or even three babies called fawns. Fawns stay with their mother for their first year. Afterwards, male fawns disperse and may join small “bachelor” groups of bucks, while doe fawns continue to associate with female relatives. Whitetails reproduce from October to December. Bucks pursue the does in heat, using scents, scraps, and rubs to announce their presence to rival males. They’ll even spar with their antlers to secure their chance to mate! Seeing Deer at Wehr: The best time to see deer is at dawn and dusk when they are out feeding. Winter is the easiest season to track and spot them. Look for them along our woodland trails in winter, especially on the warmer south-facing slopes. Visit in the Fall to catch a glimpse of bucks while they are distracted during rutting season!
Fawns are born with spotted fur that helps them camouflage as they hide.
Tracks & Signs: Look for these deer signs and tracks along the trails at Wehr

Critter Close-up continued Be A Good Neighbor to Deer
Give Them Space: Urban deer are acclimated to humans, but they are not tame! Please give them space and never try to touch them. Leave Fawns Alone: Fawns hide for the first few weeks of their lives, relying on their spots and faint scent to hide from predators. You may see them lying alone near trails, but their mother is nearby and will return. Please do not try to move them.
©Laura Mishefske
Don’t Feed Them: Leaving food out for deer endangers their health and safety. Bacteria in a deer’s stomach adapt to the wild food available during that season. Providing corn, pumpkins, and other feed to them, especially in the winter, can lead to bloating and death. Food piles also help to spread diseases such as Chronic Wasting Disease.

Fun Facts About Deer
Super Deer! White-tailed deer are amazing athletes that can run 40 mph in bursts, swim up to 15 mph, and jump 9-foot fences from a standstill!
White-tailed Warning!
Whitetails raise and flag their white tail to warn other deer of danger.
What Nice Antlers You Have! A buck’s antlers are living organs that are shed each winter and regrown during the summer to prepare for the fall rut. The size and shape of a buck’s antlers are influenced by genetics, age, and the animal’s overall health.
