Rethinking How We Build Port of Tillamook: A Timber Hub For The Future of Building Materials

Constructing A Point of No Return?

Earth today is seeing an increase of temperature due the amount of green house emitted largely from Human actions.

According to studies, the building sector is one of the major sources of global greenhouse gas emissions. Construction related CO2 emissions equaled 5.7 billion tons, accounting for “40% of current global C02 emissions “-(Alan Organschi) In 2018, building construction and operations accounted for the largest share of both global final energy use (36%) and energy-related CO2 emissions (39%) (UNEP, 2019) This is partly due to concrete and steel being used in the majority of buildings. Humanity faces an important challenge in climate change, requiring immediate mitigation measures to prevent the passing the point of no return.

Rethinking the Way We Build Why Would We Want To Change?

We have been building the same way for so long, but is the best way? With cities experiencing a resurgence in population growth, the building industry ought to attend this demand with sustainable solutions.

The use of steel and concrete in small and large scale projects today produces a large carbon release into the climate. Since steel and concrete have high material strengths, we currently use either steel, concrete or composites of them All of these objects are products, not materials. There is no simple trail of where these materials are sourced and produced. This leaves unanswered questions that need to be considered due to today’s climate crisis.

Mass Timber As A Strategy Faster Construction Wood, specifically mass timber buildings can be constructed faster, with lower labor costs and less waste. This would produce fast housing that could be designed to meet density requirement per development needs.

Reduction of Carbon Emissions It is estimated that replacing conventional building materials with wood in half of new urban construction could provide 9% reduction in emissions needed to meet 2030 targets to keep global warming below 1.5 °C. This is a potential change that does not need substantial changes to consumption, lifestyle or policy.

It can help pay for good forest management A market for mass timber would create a surge for managing forest’s. Mass timber must be coupled with sustainable forestry This would promote healthier forest management as well as protecting forest urging smarter forestry practices.

Healthier Living and Working Uses of wood as a structural or finishing material not only offer aesthetic beauty, but enhances indoor air quality, acoustics, thermal comfort, and energy efficiency. Incorporating natural elements into the built environment, where people spend most of their time, contributes to human wellbeing in both residential and commercial Its the Only way A more sustainable alternative must be found. Wood is the only material sufficiently abundant ,renewable and its built by the sun. We need to figure out a way to make it work.

To design an CLT Prototype Center that facilitates the tools, space and equipment to allow builders, designers and the next generation to collaborate towards attacking the problems of using new methods of wood materials and the forests as a natural tool to assist in the process of global changes. This building serves as a model that expresses the capabilities of wood, functioning as a educator in wood utilization.

Why Do I Envision CLT Prototype Center in Tillamook?

Push the agenda in utilizing the use of new wood construction processes; 1. To ultimately decrease carbon emissions in working towards sustainable cities to help combat climate change, and 2. TIllamook offers the space and sources needed explore potential solutions away from the city. The site embeds the vision into the natural environment of Tillamook, surrounded by forests and agriculture. It also provides opportunity to reinvigorate TIllamook’s industrial roots, by creating new career opportunities for the local population.

How will This Vision Become A Reality?

Design and research new solutions in how we build our buildings, Fabricate and Construct these new solutions. To allow clear transparency in the process, bringing everyone to the table to clearly see what needs to happen as well as working with everyone; professionals, industries, the public and other decision makers to grow the interest in mass timber.

Partnering with the TIllamook Bay Community College can bring in new experiences and opportunities within the Tillamook education . New solutions would require new experts in the field of mass timber design. The development center will provide these opportunities to the next generation to tackle the challenges we face today.

Involving local forest Industries will promote job growth within the forest sector through managements and material flow tracking as they work closely along with the development building. With new developments and solutions being found, the process of utilizing wood would adapt, leaving new opportunities in jobs.

Connecting and Spreading the Vision

Public Education Public involvement and education opportunities through tours and being honest in all aspects in mass timber processing. This includes bringing everyone to the table, to see what exactly is going on.

Professional Networking Bringing professionals as well as branching into the educational system to work as a team on creating new solutions in design, utilizing wood as the major material.
