GCRA Supports Local Charities

The Ronald McDonald House of Charleston Provides a “home away from home” for families of seriously ill children. The Ronald McDonald House eliminates the financial burden of costly hotels and provides a homelike atmosphere where families can lead a life as normal as possible during their time of need. 90% of our families have children in intensive care units. 40% of our families have children undergoing open heart surgery and another 36% have babies in neonatal intensive care. Over half of our families return for a second treatment or surgery. While the majority of the families we serve are from South Carolina, we have served families from all 50 states and 12 foreign countries. The Ronald McDonald family room at MUSC provides a sanctuary at the hospital where family members can rest, read, shower or have a cup of coffee while still being close to their child.

The Hollings Cancer Center is the largest academic-based cancer center in South Carolina. The Hollings Cancer Center has united the best cancer treatment, research, education and shared resources in a single location on the MUSC campus.

These resources are extended throughout South Carolina via partnerships with other healthcare organizations, ensuring that all South Carolina cancer patients have access to our innovative care.

The Hollings Cancer Center also offers a number of cancer support services to help cancer patients know what to expect during the course of their cancer treatment.

The Omar Shrine Temple is a local, non-profit organization with jurisdiction over the 22 eastern most counties of South Carolina. The official philanthropic purpose of the Shriners is to support the Shriners Hospitals for Children. The Shriners Hospitals for Children have a network of 22 hospitals offering state of the art care to children under the age of 18 for orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries and cleft lip & palate needs regardless of the patient or patient’s families ability to pay for services.

The Charleston County Schools Science Materials Resource Center enables the science teachers in the tri-county area schools to have the tools and textbooks they need to educate the students to the best of their ability. The donation received from the Charleston Restaurant Foundation helps cover any funding shortfall that has occurred in the past.

Going through a medical crisis is tough in and of itself, but for nearly 30,000 individuals who work in the hospitality industry in the tri-county area, it can be even tougher as most do not have health insurance. The Hospitality Heroes Fund, a nonprofit organization, has stepped forward to address this ever-growing issue and help alleviate some of the financial burden brought on by unfortunate medical tragedies within the hospitality community. Its mission is to lend a helping hand to local hospitality employees and their families who are impacted by a medical hardship.

Owner of 82 Queen and Lowcountry Bistro Restaurant Experience: 40 + years Steve Kish, originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania has been in the Hospitality Industry for over 40 years. He began his career in the Lowcountry in 1982 when he and his partners opened 82 Queen. Today, Kish is highly regarded in the Charleston community, both personally and professionally. He is a founding member of the Chef Association, a Greater Charleston Restaurant Association Board member, a Taste of Charleston and Oyster Festival Chairman, a husband, a father of two, and the proud owner of 82 Queen, now a long-standing Charleston tradition, and Lowcountry Bistro, a new addition to the Charleston City Market.

he restaurant business is fickle, especially in a food-centric town like Charleston. So it’s quite a feat to be in the business

for a decade or 2. But there are a handful of Charleston’s finest restaurateurs that have been staples in the Charleston Culinary scene and role models for the next generations for over 30 years!

John Keener

Owner of Charleston Crab House Restaurants Restaurant Experience: 35 + years John Keener started his restaurant career in 1979. In 1991, he opened the first Charleston Crab House on Wappoo Creek. Over the years, John has owned or operated six different restaurant concepts in Charleston and over eight Crab Houses in the Carolinas. Today, Keener is the owner of the two Charleston area Crab House Restaurants, an active member of the Greater Charleston Restaurant Association, SC Hospitality Association, Charleston Visitor Bureau and Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy. He is a member of the Country Club of Charleston, The Hibernian Society and James Island Baptist Church. John and his wife Brandy have been married for 21 years and have three children.

Operating Partner of Folly Beach Crab Shack and The Grill and Island Bar Restaurant Experience: 35 + years Ron Hill, is a true Charleston native born at Roper Hospital. In 1979, he started his restaurant career as a dishwasher. After some time working in the back of the house, Ron started working with Ronnie Boals at Pelican Food Group and moved to the front of the house. He continued to work with Ronnie at Josie Joes Bar & Restaurant, RB’s Seafood and Ronnie’s Seafood Restaurant where he becoming the General Manager. In 1999, Ron joined the Crab Shacks team to open up the Folly Beach Crab Shack. Today, Ron is the operating partner of The Folly Beach Crab Shack and The Grill and Island Bar on Folly Beach. Ron is married to Paige and they have two boys, Logan and Landon.

Restaurant Experience: 38 + years Both Marconi and Lee started their work careers in the mid-seventies, each traveling to hone their craft. In 1988 both began working for Dick Elliott at The Colony House in Charleston. At the end of 1993 the three became partners in Slightly North of Broad and have remained so for the past 20 years.

Frank has been the culinary force behind Maverick Southern Kitchens and has been recognized as a Southern culinary standout in publications ranging from Gourmet and Food Arts to Food & Wine and Southern Living. He has appeared as a guest chef on ABC’s Good Morning America as well as Great Chefs of the South, and he’s been

featured in dozens of local, regional and national journals. Chef Lee is active in the local community and participates in many charitable and civic events. He is an active supporter of local, independent and organic farmers and other food purveyors.

David has opened new restaurants for Maverick Southern Kitchens, managed multiple restaurants and has played an integral role in the development of the Maverick restaurant enterprise. He has served on the Board of Directors for the SC Hospitality Association and for the Greater Charleston Restaurant Association as well as often being called to serve on city committees addressing restaurant policies and regulations.

In May 2008, Slightly North of Broad was inducted into the esteemed Nation’s Restaurant News annual Fine Dining Hall of Fame.

Friday, September 27 – Sunday, September 29 This year marks the 33rd anniversary of the Lowcountry’s culinary event of the year, The Southern Living Taste of Charleston, hosted by the Greater Charleston Restaurant Association, Inc (GCRA). A 3-day event showcasing taste-tempting delights served by Charleston restaurants.

Main Event Sunday, September 29 Historic Boone Hall Plantation 10:30a – 5:00pm Historic Boone Hall Plantation is transformed into a sea of culinary enchantment! 50 of Charleston’s favorite casual and fine dining restaurants serving sample size portions of the best the Lowcountry has to offer. Other event highlights include: Specialty and imported beer tasting tent, live entertainment, the legendary “Waiters’ Race” and the children’s area.

Taste: Sweet & Southern on Shem Creek Friday, September 27 Cottage on the Creek Join us for an intimate evening on Historic Shem Creek featuring performances from world-renowned singer/songwriters. Guests will also be treated to Lowcountry cuisine served by a variety of the area’s top caterers as well as moonlit harbor cruises.

Taste: Iron Chef Competition Saturday, September 28 Culinary Institute of Charleston, Palmer Campus The Iron Chef is a showcase of local chefs in a heated head-to-head battle in the Culinary Institute of Charleston’s state-of-the-art amphitheater kitchen.

After the secret ingredient is announced, the chefs will have 45 minutes to create and cook at least 4 dishes to be judged by our panel of experts.
