A MESSAGE FROM LEADERSHIP

When my father, Michael M. Bill, founded MJ Insurance as a two-person start-up in 1964, he did so with the firm belief that our charge in the insurance industry was to help protect people and the things most important to them. This was not only the purpose of his business but applicable to his personal life as well. He taught me never to take life for granted and to practice gratitude—something both he and I continue to incorporate into our lives today.

This sense of gratitude helped lead us to the Purpose that guides MJ today and serves as a filter for decision-making. Every word of our Purpose was crafted with careful intent.

Every day we are granted the opportunity to live out this Purpose. This doesn’t mean we’ve stopped looking for ways to improve. We are always searching for ways to do more and stay true to our Purpose. Thus, the idea for the MJ Foundation was born. Since our founding, we have placed emphasis on giving back to the communities in which we live and work, but we wanted to formally harness our power and be an intentional force for good. Cue 2020.

Heading into 2020, we had big plans for unveiling the MJ Foundation. Due to the global coronavirus pandemic those plans, along with many others, did not come to fruition. What did come to fruition, however, I argue is much better. Our communities were in greater need for support than ever before, and we recognized that instead of focusing on the launch of the Foundation, we should shift our energy, focus and funds where it was needed most, supporting those most impacted by the pandemic.

As our Impact Report will highlight, we were able to continue giving throughout the pandemic which inspired our associates to carry that momentum into 2021 and 2022.

Although the MJ Foundation formal launch was delayed, we quickly realized our associates were already living out that mission. I am honored to lead an organization that embraces change, embraces volatility and most importantly, embraces humanity.

Our Foundation gives us yet another platform for service that I believe best reflects the gratitude we share. We’re taking nothing for granted at MJ, and we’re looking forward to giving back with a grateful and full heart. But it contains multitudes: If we take it literally, it affects not just the scores of people who work for MJ, or the thousands we number among our partners and clients, but the millions who make up the larger communities in which we live and work. MJ has long been a committed community partner, but we’re always looking for ways to do more, make a greater difference and improve the lives of the neighbors who need our help the most.

We provide humanitarian support for both situational and endemic issues that challenge the communities we serve—from disaster relief to children’s healthcare and the overall wellbeing of families.

OUR IMPACT JOURNEY

When MJ was founded over 58 years ago, defining our Purpose was of utmost importance to us. Though we only recently established the MJ Foundation, giving back has been a core part of who we are since the beginning. Since its inception, MJ has long been a committed community partner. From a two-person start-up to an agency with more than 200 employees in Indiana, Arizona and Colorado, we have kept community at the forefront.

From our long-standing partnership with Providence Cristo Rey High School and Phoenix Children’s Hospital to coordinating a fall festival to support our friends at Dayspring Center, to cooking meals for the homeless at Fletcher Place Community Center—MJ has always prioritized and encouraged giving back in the communities we call home. That’s why, after more than half a century of dedicated community service, we created the MJ Foundation.

TOGETHER4IMPACT

As we were exploring ways for MJ to make a stronger community impact, the coronavirus pandemic struck and placed a tremendous amount of pressure on the communities we serve in terms of food, economic and family security.

We are proud to have partnered with Gregory & Appel on the Together4Impact initiative. Through this partnership, we overcame competitive boundaries and together mutually supported the greater Indianapolis community.

Each company donated $25,000 to organizations that support local communities impacted by COVID-19. Our efforts focused on three pillars: food security, economic security, and family security. After the initial donation, we encouraged our industry partners to get involved raising another $50,000 in funds, totaling $100,000 in COVID-19 relief. This was just the beginning of our journey.

At Prevail, we know that we cannot serve the community without the support of the community. This is an amazing example of coming together to ensure that those who need help have access to services in meaningful ways. We are proud to be a family security recipient of the Together4Impact initiative.

FOUNDATION EVENTS

At our annual fundraising events, business partners and community members come together to have fun and raise money for the causes the MJ Foundation vows to support. Our events bring people together to fundraise for a common cause and give us a chance to engage in friendly competition with tournaments such as Topgolf and Fowling. The funds raised go toward the Foundation to help us support local nonprofits through donations and grants.

TOPGOLF TOURNAMENT

In 2021, we hosted our inaugural fundraising event for the MJ Foundation in Indianapolis. We invited members of the community, associates and our business partners to join us in a TopGolf tournament. We welcomed over 200 friends and raised over $30,000 to support organizations in our community that align with our four focus areas.

FOWLING TOURNAMENT

After the success of our first fundraiser, we challenged ourselves to think outside the box and hold an event that would be a new, fun experience atypical for a fundraiser of its kind. For our second fundraiser, we hosted a Fowling tournament. What is Fowling, you may ask? Fowling [foe-ling] is the original football bowling pin game. Created in Indianapolis— at an Indianapolis 500 tailgate to be exact—the nationwide sensation, Fowling, combines football and bowling in a fun, social environment. The fun environment couldn’t be denied during our tournament as over 100 people came together to raise over $50,000 for the MJ Foundation.

DIAMONDBACKS GAME

2022 was also the year we held our first fundraising event in Arizona. This event looked a little different than the two events held in Indianapolis; instead of a tournament, we partnered with our long-time client, the Arizona Diamondbacks. Through our partnership, we hosted a fun-filled night at the ballpark for patients of Phoenix Children’s Hospital (PCH) and their families. We were able to utilize this opportunity to give back while raising money. Each family received free admission to the game, free food and drink, a gift card to the MLB gift shop and a goodie bag. It was so rewarding to bring this experience to these families who are so deserving of a fun evening together. We hosted over 25 families and raised over $55,000.

COMMUNITY IMPACT

CHARITY OF CHOICE

To best serve our communities, we take a more focused approach—concentrating on two local charities where we get actively involved in the charity itself. Every two years, our associates choose one charitable organization in each of our markets to support as our Charity of Choice. This is where we focus much of our time and resources. Please note, as we opened our Denver office in 2022, we chose to wait until our next Charity of Choice selection cycle to maximize the benefits the organization will receive.

Our associates are connected with so many wonderful organizations, and over the years we have had the opportunity to make a generous and worthwhile contribution to each of our Charities of Choice. We've developed long-standing relationships with each organization while exposing MJ team members to their mission and purpose, ultimately increasing our impact as well as associate engagement. Though our Charity of Choice program has been in place since 2012, we took a more intentional approach during the selection of our 2021-2023 Charities of Choice—ensuring each aligned to one or more of the Foundation's four areas of focus.

Each Charity of Choice receives media and brand exposure, a $5,000 grant from the MJ Foundation and a dedicated Day of Service with Team MJ associates. The Charity of Choice also receives a toolkit that includes its media calendar for the duration of the selection.

DAMAR (IN)

Damar is one of the leading service providers for individuals with developmental, behavioral and intellectual disabilities. With a wide range of services covering everything from education to transitional living support, Damar is focused on providing the best care for not only those with disabilities, but their families and loved ones as well.

ARIZONA’S CHILDREN ASSOCIATION (AZ)

Arizona’s Children Association is the largest and oldest child welfare and behavioral health not-for-profit in Arizona. Services include foster care, kinship services and family preservation among many others. Arizona’s Children Association ensures all funds are put towards providing the best care and services possible. With 89 cents of every dollar donated going directly into services, every donation plays a big role in impacting the lives of children and families throughout Arizona.

CHARITY OF THE MONTH

We realize that there are many causes and charities that are important to our associates. Though we focus the majority of our efforts on our associate-chosen Charities of Choice, we actively seek to raise awareness about a variety of causes in our communities and inspire others to join in support.

Each month, MJ selects a charitable organization to feature. We aim to harness the power of social media to spread the word about the organization and encourage our vast network of partners to get involved. We feature our Charity of the Month on our external website, intranet, in our offices and on our social media channels. Our Charity of the Month also receives brand exposure through a dedicated article on our blog, MJ Insight, to amplify their message

1,000 HOURS CAMPAIGN

With the development of the Foundation, we wanted to push ourselves to invest more of our time in serving the communities around us; in 2021, we launched an internal campaign to challenge our team to volunteer 1,000 community service hours in one fiscal year. In true Team MJ fashion, our associates surpassed this goal in April. With four months left in our fiscal year, we challenged our associates to double these hours. Our associates rose to the challenge and collectively volunteered a total of 2,680 hours during our 2021-2022 fiscal year!

To thank our associates for their work in the community, we selected three associates who served in our 1,000 hours campaign to choose a charity of their choice for the Foundation to support through a donation. We are proud to support these organizations and our associates who feel so passionately about serving our community.

DAMAR DIFFERENCE MAKER AWARD

For Team MJ, giving back to our communities is core to who we are. It is a formal part of our Purpose statement, and our associates share in this passion. When it comes to supporting our Charities of Choice, our associates are always thinking of ways we can do more and be active forces for good. In 2022, Damar recognized the effort of all of Team MJ through an award at their 2022 Difference Maker Awards. The MJ Foundation was named the 2022 Remarkable Volunteer of the Year. Receiving this award is a true honor as it goes to show our associates’ commitment to our Purpose. Serving Damar as our 2021-2023 Charity of Choice has been something that has brought great joy to our team, and while Damar has named us their 2022 Remarkable Volunteer, we feel just as honored to support such a remarkable organization.

2022 DAYS OF SERVICE

As the pandemic proved to be a difficult time for in-person volunteerism, in 2022, we were thrilled to launch our Day of Service with our 2021-2023 Charities of Choice.

INDIANAPOLIS DAY OF SERVICE

Due to an overwhelming response, we were able to provide two service day opportunities with our Charity of Choice, Damar. As part of Damar’s Fair Day, where Damar kids and staff enjoyed a fair-like experience, our volunteers helped run fair game stations, pass out prizes and served lemonade shakeups and elephant ears.

For our second Day of Service, 31 of our Indianapolis associates painted murals across Damar’s Children's Residential Campus to help make their temporary home more beautiful. This was a dream project for Damar as the walls that were painted had originally been bare and made the environment less inviting. With the help of Team MJ, the campus is now more colorful and vibrant.

The mural painting that Team MJ did has been a dream project for us at Damar for several years. The walls were built to serve as protection and boundaries for our residents; and while they are serving that purpose, they also were another reminder that the clients live in a residential treatment facility and not a home. We had the idea of painting the walls, and Team MJ stepped up to the plate to plan a remarkable Day of Service.

PHOENIX DAY OF SERVICE

Our Arizona office was also able to support our Charity of Choice, Arizona’s Children Association through two service days. For the first service opportunity, our associates helped fill backpacks with donated school supplies that were then given to students before their first day of school. In addition, our associates sorted books that were then distributed to various Arizona’s Children Association learning centers. For the second service day, our associates wrapped and organized gifts for children just in time for the holidays.

The day their associates were on campus was such an exciting day. Every associate was so happy to be there, and they were all dedicated to our mission here at Damar. When the murals were finished, the residents at Damar were ecstatic! For me, it was a dream come true. Team MJ helped make our residents’ temporary home more beautiful, and I can say on behalf of everyone at Damar, how thankful we are for such a remarkable partner in MJ.

ASSOCIATE CONTRIBUTIONS

DONATION MATCHING

As is evident in our Purpose statement, we believe it is an obligation to encourage our associates to give back through volunteerism, advocacy and community engagement. To help fuel our associates’ desire to give back, we offer a 100% annual match of any charitable donation up to $150.

Since 2020, we have had 73 associates request a donation match and matched over $10,000 of our associates’ contributions.

VOLUNTEER TIME OFF

Our associates are encouraged to take up to two days of Voluntary Time Off (VTO) annually to take time to support an organization they are passionate about. It is of utmost importance to us that our associates can not only live out our Purpose through volunteerism but are able to fulfill their personal Purpose by giving back where they are most passionate.

ASSOCIATE HIGHLIGHT

Sarah Hanson, MJ’s Learning + Development Manager, is one of many associates who takes advantage of our volunteer time off. Sarah has been serving at Dayspring Center for the past 10 years.

I have lived next door to Dayspring Center for 13 years and had my first experience volunteering there about 10 years ago when my husband's employer asked for volunteers to serve a meal to the residents at the shelter. It was during that service opportunity that I realized what a special place Dayspring is! Dayspring is an emergency shelter for homeless families and provides basic needs to its residents while keeping the family unit together and connecting them with opportunities to help them realize their potential. Since that day of service 10 years ago, I have supported Dayspring in several ways. I use the volunteer service hours MJ provides to work in the Dayspring office helping with administrative tasks, preparing and serving meals to the residents, hosting fun events for the children at the shelter (our favorite was movie and popcorn night!), and for the past 8 years, I have

served on the Fundraising Event Planning Committee planning and implementing events that raise awareness and funds for the shelter. I enjoy giving my time to Dayspring because they fill such an important need within the Indianapolis community – housing and supporting homeless families with children. Many shelters will only take in women with children, but Dayspring accepts all families. I love interacting with the families because they are my neighbors. There is often a stigma associated with being homeless, that perhaps the person made poor choices that led to them being homeless. However, when you take the time to hear their stories oftentimes, they are very relatable. I cannot even imagine what it would be like to be a parent and not be able to provide the most basic needs for your children; luckily Dayspring is there to help get them back on their feet and thrive within the community.

As our impact numbers show, our associates serve a variety of different organizations and give back in any way they can. We feel so honored to have built an organization of associates who value and embrace our Purpose. PROVIDENCE CRISTO REY HIGH SCHOOL

Located minutes from downtown Indianapolis, Providence Cristo Rey High School (PCRHS) is a private, college-preparatory high school for students from families with limited financial means. Providence Cristo Rey combines rigorous classroom instruction with real-life corporate work study experiences for our students by partnering with the finest businesses and corporations in the Indianapolis area. Our Corporate Work Study program allows Providence Cristo Rey to make a faith-based, college preparatory education affordable to all students and families who could not otherwise afford a Catholic education.

By employing PCRHS students at MJ, we strive to provide them with real-life, professional experience, while also helping them understand how their current and future academic experiences can be applied. In doing so, we enter our relationship with them as young, naïve children and by the time they graduate, they are mature, respectful adults more prepared for the next step in their lives than most other graduates.

An unexpected, yet very significant benefit of our involvement with the Corporate Work Study Program is the enormous impact the students have on the hearts and minds of our associates. We currently have two students who work in our Support Services department. We are honored and privileged to be involved with PCRHS and thank the students, faculty, and all of the Corporate Work Study partners for their commitment to making Indianapolis and the surrounding communities a place we are all proud of.

ASSOCIATE HIGHLIGHT

MJ’s Tricia Everhart plays a huge role in making our PCRHS Corporate Work Study program a success. Tricia serves as the career mentor for our students and played an integral role in helping the school navigate the work program throughout the pandemic. In 2021, Tricia received the inaugural Al Leighton Award, a new award created to recognize Career Mentors who go above and beyond to support their student workers and the Corporate Work Study Program as a whole.

When I was first presented the opportunity to host a student in the Support Services department, I was hesitant. It’s funny how things work out like that because now I can’t imagine my time here at MJ without the PCRHS program. Despite my hesitation, I've been blessed with affirmation that I'm doing exactly what I'm supposed to be doing. The sign that stands out to me the most is from one student who was very quiet and hard to talk to. Then one day PCHRS brought in 8th grade students for what they call a Shadow Day. I told the student at the time, "Okay, you have to speak to these kids and tell them what you do here.” He proceeds to tell them what he does, and he said, "I work with Miss Tricia and, well, she's like a mom to me." I knew at that moment I was right where I was supposed to be.

When the pandemic struck, I knew that if we needed our students to work remotely, other organizations did too. I worked with the school and other corporate partners to ensure that the program was able to continue throughout the pandemic. Receiving the Al Leighton award was a great honor; however, for me, the greatest honor is working with the students, the school staff and the other corporate partners to ensure we are able to continue providing the best program for these kids.

PHOENIX CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

Phoenix Children’s Hospital (PCH) is an organization very close to the hearts of many of our associates. We partner with PCH in a variety of ways. In 2022, we served as the copresenting sponsor for the PCH Annual Golf Tournament, one of the hospital’s signature fundraising events. We have served as an event sponsor for over five years. Proceeds from the tournament help launch critical new programs, purchase essential equipment, conduct cutting-edge research and more. We are proud to support the hospital in this way and play our part in contributing to the over $8.2 million raised for children in the community.

Our involvement in the tournament has not been limited to event sponsorship. In 2022, Pat Moore, an Employee Benefits Consultant served as Chair of the PCH Golf Tournament. This wasn’t the first time an MJ associate served in this capacity as previously, Byron Shultz, MJ’s VP of Sales + Strategy, filled this position. We are extremely grateful to have such passionate associates who live our Purpose outside of the walls of MJ. Their involvement proves our culture and Purpose are more than just words and are truly something our associates embody.

In addition to our involvement with the golf outing, our Arizona-based associates are very active with PCH. Barry Goodrich, Arizona Market President, currently serves as the PCH50 President. PCH50 is a group of 50 driven community leaders who are serving as the next-generation supporters of Phoenix Children’s Hospital through financial fundraising, volunteer efforts and awareness building.

ASSOCIATE HIGHLIGHT

MJ’s Pat Moore has been actively involved in the PCH Golf Tournament by serving on the PCH Golf Committee for the past 5 years. In 2022, Pat had the opportunity to take his involvement one step further by serving as the Chair for the 2022 tournament. Under Pat’s leadership, and with assistance from the rest of their PCH Golf Committee, they were able to raise over $1,000,000 for the 2022 event. This was a new record amount raised from the golf tournament! Every penny donated to the event goes directly to assisting PCH and their patients and families. Not only did the event set a record for funds raised, but the tournament sold out of foursomes and consisted of 288 players.

As a father of two young children, I now have a much bigger purpose in life. We are grateful to have healthy children but also understand that can change in an instant. More importantly, countless families are not as lucky and need help now more than ever. Phoenix Children’s Hospital has made countless contributions to the Phoenix community and its patients and families. To be able to work for an organization that also recognizes the amazing work of PCH and to be encouraged to give back is something unparalleled. I am happy and honored to play a small part in bringing awareness and resources to PCH.

FOOD 4 SOULS

Food 4 Souls is a homeless ministry that exists to go out and serve the homeless community in Indianapolis with unconditional love and acceptance. Every Sunday afternoon, a group of volunteers travels to downtown Indianapolis providing clothing, food and other resources to the homeless community. Nearly 100 people are served every week with approximately 5,000 meals and thousands of toiletry items being distributed each year. This involvement and commitment not only provides the opportunity for volunteers to tangibly serve but also play a critical and necessary role in building trusting relationships with the homeless in our community. Food 4 Souls also runs a day refuge called Daniel's House. The home provides a safe environment for the people they serve to connect with providers and with peers so that they can receive the necessary resources and encouragement needed to take the next steps in their journey beyond homeless.

ASSOCIATE HIGHLIGHT

When Kevin Sliwa, Senior Vice President of Benefits Consulting, started thinking about what it is he wanted to accomplish when he reflects on his career, he asked himself, “At some point in the future, when I look back, what difference do I really want to make?”. What he found was that it wasn’t tied to the business itself but how he could use MJ to help those we serve and fulfill our Purpose. Kevin and a colleague sat at a coffee shop and started jotting down ideas on a napkin, and on that napkin, Food 4 Souls was born. Since its founding, Food 4 Souls has served over 30,000 meals in the Indianapolis community and assisted in transitioning over 300 people off the streets. Kevin’s passion has spread throughout MJ where other MJ associates have been able to get involved and help make Kevin’s dream a reality through board membership and volunteering. We, and many others, think that when Kevin looks back at his career, he certainly has something to be proud of.

Several years ago, I found myself at the crossroads of a decision after I was invited down to serve in the homeless camps of Indianapolis. Something needed to be done, but I felt extremely unequipped to do anything to help. What do I know about homelessness? The need is so great, what difference am I really going to make? Where am I going to find the time to do this? I needed to change my perspective. So, I just decided to continue to show up and focus on building relationships with the people I was serving. Within a year, a small group of people who lived out those same commitments each week within the homeless camps of Indianapolis created a nonprofit called Food 4 Souls. Since our inception, Food 4 Souls has done so much to help the homeless community. But as much as Food 4 Souls has helped others, I assure you, no one feels more blessed than me. Seeing hope restored to someone’s life when they are ready to give up. Seeing the love and intrinsic goodness that the people of this city have as they literally take the boots off their feet or the gloves off their hands while serving so that a homeless individual can stay warm. It’s humbling, and it has undoubtedly provided my family and me with a new perspective in life that I am beyond grateful for.
