Protagonizando este número tenemos al artista holandés Franky Rizardo quien se ha hecho un hueco en la industria con su distintiva mezcla de tech y deep house. Su trayectoria está impregnada de pasión, innovación y una profunda conexión con la música.

In this new edition of Mixmag Spain, we welcome a new summer season that brings not only the Peninsula but also our beloved island of Ibiza alive with enticing offerings from the clubbing industry. Having spent countless hours on Ibiza's dance floors, I've always sought to recreate the energy I felt there in my music.

The vibrant atmosphere, diverse sounds, and passionate crowds of Ibiza have inspired me to push myself and evolve as an artist. My experiences on the island have shaped not only my music but also my aspirations and drive in the electronic music scene.

Entre la multitud de locales y eventos de Ibiza, algunos en particular tienen un significado especial para Franky.

Para Rizardo, llevar FLOW a Pacha Ibiza es un momento cumbre lleno de emoción, anticipación y gratitud.

“Cada lugar de Ibiza tiene su propio significado, pero hay algunos que destacan personalmente para mí. Para mí, Pacha siempre ocupará un lugar especial en mi corazón, ya que fue mi primera experiencia de la vida nocturna de Ibiza. Among the multitude of venues and events in Ibiza, some particular ones hold a special significance for Franky.

Each venue in Ibiza holds its own unique significance, but there are a few that stand out for me personally. For me, Pacha will always hold a special place in my heart as it was my first experience of Ibiza's nightlife. The warm, vibrant atmosphere of Pacha makes it feel like holy ground, an iconic symbol of Ibiza's rich history and culture.

For Rizardo, bringing FLOW to Pacha Ibiza is a pinnacle moment suffused with excitement, anticipation, and gratitude.

“From the beginning of FLOW, it has been our ultimate goal to curate our night in the iconic setting of Pacha Ibiza. For me, Pacha holds a special place as my favorite club night and the epitome of clubbing excellence worldwide.

El reciente remix de Rizardo de ‘Make Me’ es un ejemplo de su capacidad para infundir profundidad emocional al contagioso groove de la música house. Atraído por las cautivadoras voces del tema original, Rizardo sabía que podía hacer algo grande con esta fantástica pieza musical.

The remix’s resonance on Spotify (more than 4 million plays) and its traction among electronic music enthusiasts globally attest to Rizardo’s prowess in the studio.

“I try not to think too much when remixing. You get into a certain state of mind where you automatically feel where to go. I focus a lot on the low end in my remixes, the relation between the kick and the bass, I like a pumping kind of feel, and I think that energy translates into it sounding like me.”

When I first heard the original, I was immediately hooked on the vocal. As I was boarding a flight I started working straight away on my version during the flight. The original had this cool breakbeat vibe, but I felt it could use a touch of house if I wanted to bring it into my sets.

Los fans esperan con impaciencia el próximo álbum de Rizardo, que promete mostrar un espectro musical más amplio junto a sus lanzamientos de club. Concebido durante la pandemia de COVID-19, el álbum refleja tanto momentos introspectivos como temas llenos de energía, sirviendo como testimonio de la versatilidad y evolución artística de Rizardo.

“Este álbum representará un espectro musical más amplio junto a mis actuales lanzamientos de club.

Ha sido muy divertido experimentar con distintos géneros. Empecé a trabajar en él durante la pandemia de COVID-19, lo que sin duda ha influido en algunos de los momentos más introspectivos del álbum. Sin embargo, también puedes esperar temas llenos de energía.”

Fans are eagerly awaiting Rizardo’s forthcoming album, which promises to showcase a broader musical spectrum alongside his club releases. Conceived during the COVID-19 pandemic, the album reflects both introspective moments and high-energy tracks, serving as a testament to Rizardo’s versatility and artistic evolution.

Aun así, para mantener la frescura, Franky trajo algo especial para el álbum: una colaboración increíble.

“This album will represent a broader musical spectrum alongside my existing club releases. It’s been so much fun experimenting with different genres. I began working on it during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has undoubtedly influenced some of the more introspective moments on the album. However, you can also expect high-energy tracks.

Still, to stay fresh Franky brought something special for the Album; an amazing collaboration.

Franky aims to keep evolving, experimenting with different vibes, and creating a cohesive story that will take us on a journey of both introspection and euphoric dancing.

For me, diversifying in music and keeping things interesting as a producer are key, and this album is a testament to that! I can’t wait to share it.”

“Carola ha sido una inspiración para mí durante años, y admiro profundamente su talento y su selección musical. Conectar a través de nuestra mutua pasión por la música fue realmente especial, especialmente amplificada durante un b2b DJ set. Espero que tengamos la oportunidad de repetirlo pronto.”

Sharing the stage with Marco Carola at Music On in Liverpool was an unforgettable experience for Rizardo.

“He’s been an inspiration for me for years, and I deeply admire his talent and music selection.”

Aunque tocar con Marco fue una experiencia profundamente emotiva para Rizardo, su viaje no ha hecho más que empezar, ya que tiene una agenda bastante ajetreada, tocar en varios conciertos en una noche y volar a distintos países para hacerlo posible también ha producido un torbellino de emociones, y fascinación y alegría para Franky, que ve cada evento como una oportunidad única de hacer que ocurra algo especial.

“Organizar varios espectáculos seguidos puede ser toda una aventura, ya que pasas de un club a un warehouse o a un entorno totalmente distinto, como una fiesta privada en una villa. Es importante ver cada evento como algo propio, ya que cada uno de ellos requiere una atmósfera musical diferente.”

Although playing with Marco, was a deeply emotional experience for Rizardo, his journey has just begun, as he has a pretty hectic schedule, playing multiple shows in one night and flying to different countries to make it happen has also produced a whirlwind of emotions, and fascination and joy for Franky, who sees every event as a unique opportunity to make something special happen.

“Navigating multiple shows in a row can be an adventure, as you transition from a club to a warehouse to a totally different environment such as a private villa party. It’s important to see each event as its own - as each of them requires a different musical atmosphere.”

Adaptarse a cada evento es algo que siempre tienen que todo DJ ha de dominar, independientemente del tipo de local, público u hora del día. Para Franky, la clave está en captar las vibraciones de la gente y estar preparado para pinchar lo que le apetezca en cada momento.

“Siempre intento llegar al menos 30 minutos antes de mi actuación para calibrar el ambiente y sentir lo que creo que es mejor para mi actuación. Disfruto con esto y creo que es lo que hace que ser DJ sea tan especial. Hago y pincho lo que me gusta dentro de mi espectro y selección musical, manteniendo al mismo tiempo una estrecha conexión con la pista de baile. Aunque puedes preparar tus sesiones de antemano, creo que siempre es mejor decidir qué y cuándo pinchar en el momento.”

Adapting to every event is always something that all DJs have to master, no matter the type of venue, crowd, or time of day. For Franky, the key is to be able to get the vibe from the people and be prepared to play what feels right at the moment.

I always try to arrive at least 30 minutes before my set to gauge the atmosphere and feel what I think to be the best way forward for my set. I enjoy this and I think this is what makes DJ’ing so special. I do and play what I love within my musical spectrum and selection while keeping a close connection to the dance floor. While you could prepare your sets beforehand, I feel It’s always best to decide what and when to play in the moment.

Aunque llevar este estilo de vida puede ser todo un reto, Franky sabe que es un privilegio vivir la vida que tanto le ha costado conseguir.

“Soy muy consciente del privilegio que supone poder tocar en estos eventos, y disfruto de verdad intentando crear el mejor ambiente para todos. Mientras que en un almacén tiendo a tocar con más energía, una fiesta privada en una villa puede ser más cercana y personal, lo que resulta en vibras más cálidas.”

Even though having this lifestyle can be a challenging endeavor Franky knows that it is a privilege to live the life he has worked so hard to get.

“I am well aware of the privilege I have to get to play at these events, and I truly enjoy trying to create the best ambiance for all. Whereas a warehouse I tend to play more energetically, a private villa party can be closer and personal, resulting in warmer vibes.”

En medio de múltiples actuaciones por todo el mundo, Franky ha encontrado un proyecto realmente interesante para todos los entusiastas de la música: la creación de LTF Records, su propio sello.

El enfoque del sello en la selección de temas con ritmos contagiosos y ganchos distintivos coincide con el compromiso de Rizardo de organizar sesiones que resuenen con su público.

“Tener tu propio sello significa una cosa: control sobre el calendario de lanzamientos. Aunque me gusta trabajar con otros sellos, decidir cuándo puedo publicar mi música es una libertad de la que realmente disfruto. El principio fundamental que persigo es que quiero pinchar todos los temas que firmo; si no se cuela en mis sesiones, no es para nosotros en este momento.”

“Además de los temas que siempre acaban en mis sesiones, tendemos a seleccionar música con groove que tenga un gancho que llame la atención. La mayoría de los temas destacan al pinchar y son fáciles de recordar después. Buscamos ese pequeño extra que hace que el tema sea único.”

Amidst playing multiple shows all over the world, Franky has found a really interesting project for all music enthusiasts; the establishment of LTF Records, his own label.

“Having your own label means one thing, control over the release schedule. While I enjoy working with other labels, deciding when I can release my music is a freedom I truly enjoy.

The label’s focus on selecting tracks with infectious grooves and distinctive hooks aligns with Rizardo’s commitment to curating sets that resonate with his audience.

Besides the tracks always ending up in my sets, we tend to select groovy music that features a hook on top that catches the ear. Most of the tracks stand out when playing, and are easy to recall after.

We’re looking for that little extra, which makes the track unique.

Cultivar los talentos emergentes es uno de los principios fundamentales de LTF Records, y Rizardo apoya activamente a los artistas prometedores contratándolos para los eventos de FLOW y colaborando en proyectos musicales.

A través de LTF Records, Rizardo pretende ofrecer una plataforma para que estos artistas muestren su talento y lleguen a un público más amplio.

“Como he trabajado con muchos artistas en LTF Records, como por ejemplo Marco Tropeano, Nacho Scoppa y Easttown, también seguimos apoyándolos contratándolos para nuestros eventos FLOW. Además, también he colaborado en música con productores increíbles como Kirik y, recientemente, Marco Tropeano. Me alegro de que podamos contribuir a ampliar el alcance de estos artistas, ya que se lo merecen.”

Nurturing emerging talents is a core principle of LTF Records, with Rizardo actively supporting promising artists by booking them for FLOW events and collaborating on music projects. Through LTF Records, Rizardo aims to provide a platform for these artists to showcase their talent and reach a broader audience.

As I’ve worked with many artists on LTF Records like for example Marco Tropeano, Nacho Scoppa, and Easttown, we also continue to support them by booking them for our FLOW events. Furthermore, I’ve also done collaborations together on music with for example amazing producers like Kirik, and recently Marco Tropeano. I’m happy we can play a part in expanding the reach of these artists, as they fully deserve it.

El consejo de Rizardo a los aspirantes a artistas se basa en la persistencia y la pasión. Les anima a mantenerse firmes en su búsqueda de la música, a ser fieles a sí mismos y a encontrar inspiración en lo que les emociona creativamente, en lugar de dejarse llevar por opiniones externas.

“Hay muchas cosas que mencionar aquí que podrían ayudar, pero la que considero más beneficiosa es que no se desanimen y sigan trabajando y publicando música.

Nunca sabes lo cerca que estás de una canción que podría catapultar tu carrera. Intenta encontrar lo que te emociona en la música y sigue ese sentimiento por encima de las opiniones de los demás. Me encantaría mantener una actitud de “la música primero” en el panorama de la música electrónica.

Aunque los grandes espectáculos que se suman a la música pueden ser increíbles, la música debe ser de calidad ante todo. Mi objetivo es asegurarme de que la gente pase una gran noche con mi música y mis sesiones de DJ, creando recuerdos duraderos al ritmo de la música que nos gusta.”

Rizardo’s advice for aspiring artists is rooted in persistence and passion. He encourages them to remain steadfast in their pursuit of music, urging them to stay true to themselves and find inspiration in what excites them creatively, rather than being swayed by external opinions.

“There are many things to mention here that could help, but the one I feel is most beneficial is don’t get discouraged and keep working on and releasing music. You never know how close you are to a song that could catapult your career. Try to find what excites you in music, and follow that feeling over other people’s opinions. I’d love to maintain a ‘music first’ attitude to the electronic music landscape. While big shows adding to the music can be amazing, the music should be quality first. My goal is to ensure people have a great night out through my music and DJ sets, making lasting memories together to the music we love.”

baby pantera Baby Pantera, que se llama Antón, controla de verdad. Es un artista distinto y, consciente de ello, lo explota de una forma muy sobria, alejándose de lo pretencioso y lo pedante. En cuatro años y pico que lleva lanzando música, ha llegado a muchos hitos con los que muchos otros productores estarían más que satisfechos, probablemente propalando un par de fotos en el feed con racks de billetes y exhibiendo sus grills con una sonrisa ensanchada con los dedos meñiques. Supongo que Baby Pantera ya sabe que esa pose está demasiado manida y se muestra mucho menos postizo que todo eso.

Precisamente por eso, por ser peculiar, logra funcionar en una línea de tiempo desvinculada de los habituales ciclos tediosos de dar con la fórmula y ceñirse a ella hasta mientras siga sonando la flauta. De pronto se marca ‘una Locura’, que es una forma fácil de definir el sonido de su track de 2022. Año y pico más tarde, publica ‘Gemini Icon’ a puro trance a lo Evian Christ después de haber producido los ya cómodos hihats de trap para ‘Vice Club’ con Gloosito, con quien ha trabajado en muchas ocasiones. En marzo publicó su EP ‘BCM’, que es su incursión más directa en la música electrónica, con mucha presencia de trance, breakbeat, UKG y un toque remember con, por ejemplo, ‘Victoria’.

El artista madrileño es una muestra de que la diversidad en el gusto y la apertura de miras es un don. Lo mismo escucha metal extremo que la música de ascensores del pianista Walter Wanderley, para luego nutrirse del eclecticismo de la Santigold, que ha tocado todos los géneros posibles durante su carrera.

Como decía al principio, eso es controlar Baby Pantera, whose name is Anton, really knows. He is a different artist and, aware of this, he exploits it in a very sober way, moving away from pretentiousness and pedantry. In the four-odd years he’s been releasing music, he’s reached many milestones that many other producers would be more than satisfied with, probably propagating a couple of pictures in the feed with racks of notes and showing off his grills with a grin widened with his little fingers. I guess Baby Pantera already knows that this pose is too hackneyed and he comes across as much less posh than all that.

Precisely because it’s peculiar, it manages to work in a timeline detached from the usual tedious cycles of finding the formula and sticking to it for as long as the flute plays. Suddenly he makes ‘Una Locura’, which is an easy way to define the sound of his 2022 track. A year and a bit later, he releases ‘Gemini Icon’ in pure Evian Christ trance style after having produced the now comfortable trap hihats for ‘Vice Club’ with Gloosito, with whom he has worked on many occasions. In March he released his ‘BCM’ EP, which is his most direct foray into electronic music, with a lot of trance, breakbeat, UKG and a touch of remember with, for example, ‘Victoria’.

The artist from Madrid is proof that diversity of taste and open-mindedness is a gift. He listens to extreme metal and the lift music of pianist Walter Wanderley, and then feeds off the eclecticism of Santigold, who have played every

Fue en 2019 mientras estudiaba en Oporto donde, al final, mis ganas de producir eclipsaron a las de estudiar. Después, me mudé a Barcelona y allí se asentó mi carácter como productor. Empecé jugueteando con GarageBand y ahora utilizo Logic Pro X y Ableton, este último para samplear. Mis preferencias sonoras actuales son el trance y el industrial. Considero que incluso en mi fase como productor de rap, mis melodías poseían un carácter envolvente y melancólico que me encauzaban poco a poco hacia el Trance, pero no me gusta encasillarme. Me la pelan un poco los géneros. Respecto a mis métodos compositivos, han ido evolucionando como es lógico. Últimamente empiezo arrastrando cualquier sonido medianamente inspirador al proyecto y construyo la canción a su alrededor y, posteriormente, lo elimino.

También tengo un stock de audios míos improvisando melodías que vienen en cualquier momento, normalmente antes de dormir.

It was in 2019 while I was studying in Porto where, in the end, my desire to produce overshadowed my desire to study. Then I moved to Barcelona and that’s where my character as a producer settled. I started playing with GarageBand and now I use Logic Pro X and Ableton, the latter for sampling.

My current sound preferences are trance and industrial. I find that even in my rap phase, my melodies had an enveloping and melancholic character that gradually led me towards Trance, but I don’t like to pigeonhole myself. I don’t care about genres. As for my compositional methods, they have been evolving, as is logical. Lately I start by dragging any moderately inspiring sound into the project and build the song around it, and then I remove it. I also have a stock of audios of me improvising melodies that come at any time, usually before I go to sleep.

When did you realise that your project was starting to catch on?

When I felt that what I was composing really evoked and the people around me listened to it and believed in it. I thank them for helping me believe in me too.

¿Qué piensas de la cantidad de DJs que hay hoy en día? ¿Ves igual de válido ser únicamente DJ que ser DJ además de productor?

What do you think of the number of DJs nowadays? Do you see it as equally valid to be just a DJ as to be a DJ as well as a producer?

Pienso que, como muchas otras disciplinas, el mundo del DJing está desbordado y nadie termina de traer algo nuevo a la mesa. No sé si es culpa de los promotores, de los influencers, de las marcas, o del propio consumidor. Los artistas no son responsables ni transgresores, solo son capitalistas. Espero que en algún momento el flujo se regule o el público abra los putos ojos. Me entristece estar en un club y que la gente esté más pendiente de subir una story que de la música o de presenciar una buena mezcla.

Necesitamos novedad y sacrificio, necesitamos maestros de una disciplina y no artistas multidisciplinares dispersos. Hay excepciones, claro está.

I think that, like many other disciplines, the DJing world is overflowing and no one is bringing anything new to the table. I don’t know if it’s the fault of the promoters, the influencers, the brands, or the consumer himself. Artists are not responsible or transgressors, they are just capitalists. I hope that at some point the flow will be regulated or the public will open their fucking eyes. It saddens me to be in a club and people are more interested in uploading a story than in the music or witnessing a good mix. We need novelty and sacrifice, we need masters of a discipline and not scattered multidisciplinary artists. There are exceptions, of course.

Por otro lado, es igual de válido un DJ que un DJ productor pero, con lo que se comprende hoy como DJ, me siento más tranquilo pagando una entrada de alguien que produce y pincha. Creo que su universo está mejor construido y es más sólido.

On the other hand, a DJ is just as valid as a DJ producer but, with what is understood today as a DJ, I feel more comfortable paying a ticket for someone who produces and plays. I think his universe is better constructed and more solid.

Me los presentó mi gran amigo y manager Borja Pilato y desde el primer momento la comunicación fue muy fácil y fluida. Promesses siempre ha estado apoyando a proyectos de manera altruista y mirando por la cultura en general.

I was introduced to them by my good friend and manager Borja Pilato and from the first moment the communication was very easy and fluid. Promesses has always been supporting projects in an altruistic way and looking after culture in general. I salute them and have the utmost respect for them. Es decepcionante. De 20 temas que compongo a lo mejor salen 5 y los restantes se van al disco duro, normalmente, para siempre. Me reconforta pensar que un proyecto inacabado no hace más que llevarme a uno que voy a acabar. El precio a pagar jajaja.

It’s disappointing. Out of 20 songs I write, maybe 5 come out and the rest go on the hard drive, usually forever. It comforts me to think that an unfinished project only leads me to one that I’m going to finish. The price to pay hahaha.

Pues me parece muy mediocre la gran mayoría de lo que se está haciendo en España, salvándose unos pocos. Es como si nuestro país se dedicase a importar, romantizar y traducir escenas que vienen de fuera. Lamentablemente, la hegemonía de EEUU es imperante y parece que nadie tiene interés en combatirla. Eso es algo que me repugna de la globalización, entre otras cosas. No me malinterpretéis: inspirarse es necesario, pero nuestro lenguaje es muy rico al igual que nuestra cultura y está de moda repudiarla. De la misma forma que muchos otros, estoy cansado de escuchar siempre los mismos samples y los mismos remixes.

I think the vast majority of what is being done in Spain is very mediocre, except for a few. It’s as if our country were dedicated to importing, romanticising and translating scenes that come from abroad.

Unfortunately, the hegemony of the United States is prevailing and it seems that no one is interested in fighting it. That is something that disgusts me about globalisation, among other things. Don’t get me wrong: inspiration is necessary, but our language is as rich as our culture and it is fashionable to repudiate it. Like many others, I am tired of hearing always the same samples and the same remixes.

Tienen las tablas que solo se aprenden invirtiendo cientos de horas de cara al público desarrollando un estilo, artesanía, la habilidad de leer la pista con una mirada y luego, también, echando cientos de horas en el estudio. “Tuvimos que aprender a ser pacientes, porque en la industria de la música tenemos que mejorar cada día publicando canciones en sellos pequeños, y poco a poco ir ascendiendo a sellos más importantes hasta firmar con algunos de los más grandes de la industria, y esto no es fácil, pero con trabajo duro y paciencia las cosas van sucediendo paso a paso”. Desolat del mencionado Loco Dice, Elrow, Lowroom, Snatch! Records y Material son algunos de los labels que les han acompañado en sus más recientes lanzamientos. Firmar con el sello de Jamie Jones, Hot Creations, es uno de los recuerdos que guardan con más cariño. Eso, y tener el honor de pinchar para sus fiestas Paradise en Amnesia Ibiza. In the 2000s, electronic music was booming in Marseille, with amazing parties in clubs and festivals showcasing a mix of house and techno, which had a huge influence on our musical culture. Also, we were both introduced to this music by our older brothers.

¿Habéis ido desarrollando muchas Have you developed many stylistic fases estilísticas? phases?

Vuestra residencia en Spartacus Club fue larguísima.

Cuando empezamos el proyecto Chicks Luv Us, empezamos a producir tech house, influenciados por artistas como Luciano con su sello Cadenza, por ejemplo.

Rápidamente firmamos un lanzamiento en un sello alemán, Mono Recordings, que se editó en formato digital y vinilo. Artistas como Loco Dice, Marco Carola y Nick Curly apoyaron nuestro primer lanzamiento, lo que nos motivó enormemente.

Luego pasamos por un periodo en el que queríamos crear un sonido más deep minimal. Fue una época en la que artistas como Enzo Siragusa, East End Dubs, Tini y Seb Zito estaban causando sensación como pioneros de este estilo, y nos enamoramos de él. Produjimos este estilo durante unos años, publicando lanzamientos en vinilo digital en los mejores sellos con el increíble apoyo de Seb Zito, Tini, Tobi Neumann, Yaya y muchos otros. En 2016, tuvimos un momento de reflexión sobre nuestra música, y bajo la guía de nuestro gran amigo Amine Edge, decidimos volver al tech house pero mezclándolo con el sonido minimal deep tech manteniendo el deep que define nuestra firma musical hoy en día. Esto nos permite publicar en sellos tech house como Hot Creations o Elrow pero también en otros más minimal como Deeperfect, Kaluki, o el sello de Richy Ahmed, Four Thirty Two. Nos consideramos artistas eclécticos, donde nuestra música varía según nuestro estado de ánimo.

No hay mejor escuela de DJ que ser residente de un club, y tuvimos la suerte de tener una residencia durante 9 años en el Spartacus Club. Esta experiencia nos enseñó a entender la visión de una noche, a aprender a pinchar un set de calentamiento antes de un artista, así como un set de cierre después de un artista, que puede estar pinchando tech house o techno.

Cada vez teníamos que adaptar nuestros sets de calentamiento y cierre en función de los artistas que actuaban en el club. A través de esta residencia, también aprendimos a pinchar sets All Night Long y aprendimos el papel del promotor, ya que estábamos muy cerca del propietario del club y le ayudábamos en la parte artística del club. Por lo tanto, Spartacus Club fue un hito importante en nuestra carrera.

When we started the Chicks Luv Us project, we started producing tech house, influenced by artists like Luciano with his label Cadenza, for example. We quickly signed a release on a German label, Mono Recordings, which was released on digital and vinyl. Artists like Loco Dice, Marco Carola and Nick Curly supported our first release, which motivated us enormously. Then we went through a period where we wanted to create a more deep minimal sound. In 2016, we had a moment of reflection on our music, and under the guidance of our great friend Amine Edge, we decided to go back to tech house but mixing it with the minimal deep tech sound while keeping the deep that defines our musical signature today. This allows us to release on tech house labels like Hot Creations or Elrow but also on more minimal labels like Deeperfect, Kaluki, or Richy Ahmed’s label, Four Thirty Two. We consider ourselves eclectic artists, where our music varies according to our mood.

Your residency at Spartacus Club was very long.

There is no better DJ school than being a resident of a club, and we were lucky enough to have a 9 year residency at Spartacus Club. This experience taught us to understand the vision of a night, to learn how to play a warm-up set before an artist, as well as a closing set after an artist, who may be playing tech house or techno. Each time we had to adapt our warm-up and closing sets according to the artists playing in the club. Through this residency, we also learned how to play All Night Long sets and we learned the role of the promoter, as we were very close to the owner of the club and helped him with the artistic side of the club. So Spartacus Club was an important milestone in our career.

¿Clubs grandes, o más íntimos?

Para nosotros, tocar en un club grande o en uno pequeño implica más o menos el mismo enfoque, porque en cada país, en cada club, en cada festival, en cada pista de baile, ya sea grande o pequeña, siempre es necesario sentir las vibraciones.

Nunca podemos estar seguros de nada; siempre es cuestión de analizar el local, la gente, el ambiente e incluso el DJ que pincha delante de nosotros.

Por eso nos gusta llegar al menos una hora antes de nuestro set para sentir las vibraciones de cada local en el que vamos a tocar.

Would you rather do only big clubs, ¿Cuál es vuestro modus operandi or more intimate ones? para acercaros a los sellos?

For us, playing in a big club or in a small club implies more or less the same approach, because in every country, in every club, in every festival, on every dance floor, whether it’s big or small, you always need to feel the vibe. We can never be sure of anything; it’s always a matter of analysing the venue, the people, the atmosphere and even the DJ playing in front of us. That’s why we like to arrive at least an hour before our set to feel the vibe of each venue we’re going to play.

Cuando tenemos un nuevo sello objetivo para fichar, empezamos por escuchar la discografía del sello y los DJ sets del jefe del sello.

Una vez que hemos analizado y entendido a fondo los códigos del sello, empezamos a desarrollar ideas y a trabajar en ellas hasta que estamos satisfechos. Entonces, enviamos estas maquetas con la esperanza de que el sello las aprecie. Mientras el sello no nos confirma un lanzamiento, seguimos trabajando en nuevos temas para este sello hasta el momento en que tenemos los temas perfectos para el sello y éste finalmente nos confirma un lanzamiento.

What is your modus operandi for approaching labels?

When we have a new target label to sign, we start by listening to the label’s discography and the label boss’s DJ sets. Once we have thoroughly analysed and understood the label’s codes, we start to develop ideas and work on them until we are satisfied.

Then we send these demos in the hope that the label will appreciate them. As long as the label doesn’t confirm a release, we keep working on new tracks for this label until the moment when we have the perfect tracks for the label and the label finally confirms a release.

¿Cómo está yendo CLU Records?

Nuestro sello CLU Recs va bien, lo pusimos en marcha durante el cierre de Covid con la idea de publicar nuestros temas más «especiales», una mezcla entre tech house y deep tech minimal.

Inicialmente, decidimos lanzar solo nuestras propias pistas y luego firmar artistas que nos está gustando la música. Ben Murphy, Armando (PT) fueron los dos primeros artistas que publicaron en CLU, y tenemos varios próximos lanzamientos este verano de Godzi (ITA), Buogo, y Jack Wostear. El sello ha recibido un gran apoyo de artistas como Loco Dice, Jamie Jones, Solardo, Seth Troxler, por nombrar algunos... El concepto del sello también incluye la organización de showcases en clubes. Llevamos casi dos años organizando CLU Label Nights en el Baby Club (Marsella) y hace poco también hicimos una en Niza. ¡El objetivo es organizarlas en todo el mundo!

How is CLU Records going?

Our label CLU Recs is going well, we started it during the closure of Covid with the idea of releasing our more ‘special’ tracks, a mix between tech house and deep tech minimal. Initially, we decided to release only our own tracks and then sign artists that we are liking the music. Ben Murphy, Armando (PT) were the first two artists to release on CLU, and we have several upcoming releases this summer from Godzi (ITA), Buogo, and Jack Wostear. The label has received great support from artists such as Loco Dice, Jamie Jones, Solardo, Seth Troxler, to name a few... The label’s concept also includes organising showcases in clubs. We’ve been organising CLU Label Nights at the Baby Club (Marseille) for almost two years now and we recently did one in Nice as well.

The aim is to organise them all over the world!

¿Cómo compagináis la dinámica de ser amigos desde hace mucho tiempo y, al mismo tiempo, socios profesionales?

How do you reconcile the dynamic of being long time friends and professional partners at the same time?

Nuestra amistad es muy fuerte, y formamos un equipo con el mismo sueño y la misma pasión por conseguirlo. Todo entre nosotros es muy natural, compartimos los mismos gustos musicales. Es muy raro que tengamos desacuerdos, aunque puede ocurrir de vez en cuando. Nuestra fuerza reside en la capacidad de apoyarnos y motivarnos cada día para hacer crecer este proyecto.

Our friendship is very strong, and we are a team with the same dream and the same passion to achieve it. Everything between us is very natural, we share the same musical tastes. It is very rare that we have disagreements, although it can happen from time to time.

Our strength lies in our ability to support and motivate each other every day to make this project grow.

¿Qué hay de Encasa?

Respecto a Encasa Records, es sobre todo una historia de amistad con Alex Aguero que, un día en Spartacus Club compartió su proyecto de organizar fiestas llamadas Encasa y quería que fuéramos sus residentes. Varios años después, nos propuso crear el sello y nos quiso como socios y gestionando esta parte, lo cual aceptamos. El concepto de Encasa es más o menos el mismo de CLU Recs, pero más enfocado al tech house, donde disfrutamos fichando nuevos talentos para ayudarles en esta industria, que puede ser un reto al principio, pero también amigos con talento que quieren apoyar este proyecto, como Malikk, Classmatic, Beltran, Youniverse y Ammo Avenue. 2024 pinta muy bien para Encasa Records, ya que hemos confirmado 5 showcases en Vybe Club en Ibiza, y también todos los miércoles a partir de julio en Niza, en un hermoso lugar al aire libre llamado Le Théâtre de Verdure, donde por supuesto invitaremos a artistas del sello a tocar.

What about Encasa?

Regarding Encasa Records, it’s above all a story of friendship with Alex Aguero who, one day in Spartacus Club shared his project of organising parties called Encasa and wanted us to be his residents.

Several years later, he proposed us to create the label and wanted us as partners and managing this part, which we accepted. The concept of Encasa is more or less the same as CLU Recs, but more focused on tech house, where we enjoy signing new talents to help them in this industry, which can be challenging at first, but also talented friends who want to support this project, like Malikk, Classmatic, Beltran, Youniverse and Ammo Avenue. 2024 is looking very good for Encasa Records, as we have confirmed 5 showcases at Vybe Club in Ibiza, and also every Wednesday from July in Nice, at a beautiful open air venue called Le Théâtre de Verdure, where we will of course invite artists from the label to play.

How is this summer looking?

Especially in Ibiza where we have confirmed shows with Paradise at Amnesia, Kaluki at Avyca Club, Abode at Eden Club, Secret Session at Avyca Club, and of course our 5 Label Showcases at Vybe Club.

We will also be playing at Destino in August in collaboration with the Noir and Encasa event for a Pool Party. We are super excited to play in August for ELROW XXL Malaga and we have more shows scheduled in Germany, Romania, Corsica, St Tropez, Italy, and many more places.

You’re playing at Dreambeach Festival this August, which has a crazy line-up.

Tengo muchísimas ganas de este evento. Es uno de los festivales en los que siempre he querido tocar. Me siento muy afortunada de formar parte en esta edición.

I’m really looking forward to this event. It’s one of the festivals I’ve always wanted to play at. I feel very lucky to be part of this edition.

¿En qué crees que te ha influido ser de Barcelona?

He tenido la oportunidad de poder expandir mis conocimientos musicales y abrirme a descubrir distintos estilos gracias a vivir en una gran ciudad con una importante cultura en la electrónica. ¿En qué momento dijiste: “okey, creo que puedo empezar a vivir de la música”?

Creo que fue hace relativamente poco. Cuando empecé a mezclar mi intención no era dedicarme profesionalmente a esto. Me apasionaba la música pero sentía un gran respeto por esta profesión y nunca me sentí realmente preparada y formada hasta pasados 8 años de mucho aprendizaje y experiencia. ¿Recuerdas la primera vez que pinchaste en un club/evento? ¿Cómo fue?

Empecé tocando en fiestas patronales, beach clubs de la zona, etc. Y la primera vez que toqué en un club fue en Pacha La Pineda. Fue el día que más nervios e impresión he sentido en una cabina. ¿Qué maestros tuviste para aprender esta profesión?

Aprendí de forma autodidacta inspirándome en sets de artistas a los que admiro como Cristian Varela y Oscar Mulero.

How do you think being from Barcelona has influenced you?

I’ve had the opportunity to expand my musical knowledge and open myself to discover different styles thanks to living in a big city with an important electronic culture.

At what point did you say: “OK, I think I can start making a living out of music”?

I think it was relatively recently. When I started mixing I didn’t intend to do it professionally. I was passionate about music but I had a great respect for this profession and I never really felt prepared and trained until after 8 years of a lot of learning and experience.

Do you remember the first time you played in a club/event? What was it like?

I started playing at local festivals, local beach clubs, etc. And the first time I played in a club was at Pacha La Pineda. It was the day I felt more nerves and impression in a booth.

What teachers or mentors did you have to learn this profession?

I learned in a self-taught way, inspired by the sets of artists I admire such as Cristian Varela and Oscar Mulero.

¿Disfrutas más de festis al aire libre o en clubs?

Todos los eventos tienen un encanto especial. Me gusta el formato clubbing para disfrutar de un ambiente más groovero. Sin embargo, en un festival también puedes seleccionar otro tipo de tracks adaptados a ese formato y sentir las vibes de muchas personas conectando con tu música. ¿Qué importancia tienen para ti las redes sociales y por qué?

Hoy en día es imprescindible invertir tiempo en redes sociales para crecer como artista. Es un gran escaparate que te permite llegar a muchísimas personas. Es importante crear un contenido de calidad con el que poder conectar con el público que te sigue.

Do you enjoy more open air parties or clubbing?

All events have a special charm. I like the clubbing format to enjoy a groovier atmosphere. However, at a festival you can also select other types of tracks adapted to that format and feel the vibes of many people connecting with your music.

How important is social media for you and why?

Nowadays it is essential to invest time in social networks to grow as an artist. It’s a great showcase that allows you to reach a lot of people.

It’s important to create quality content to connect with the audience that follows you.

¿Cómo ves la escena actual? Crees que goza de buena salud?

How do you see the current scene?

Do you think it’s in good health?

Considero que estamos en un momento en el que conviven muchísimos estilos al mismo tiempo y todos funcionando a la vez. Salimos de una pandemia que ha marcado nuestra sociedad notablemente. Y el público demanda muchísimos eventos, festivales, variedad de artistas y de géneros musicales.

I think we are in a moment in which many styles are coexisting at the same time and all of them are working at the same time. We are coming out of a pandemic that has marked our society considerably.

And the public is demanding a lot of events, festivals, a variety of artists and musical genres.

Sacaste tu último tema ‘El Motorcito’ con Drop Low. ¿Cuál es tu relación con el sello?

You just released ‘El Motorcito’ with Drop Low. What is your relationship with the label?

Decidí hacer un track más fresco y adaptado a los sonidos actuales y supe que Drop Low era el sello perfecto para él, ya que los sonidos eran muy característicos de ese label.

I decided to make a fresher track adapted to the current sounds and I knew Drop Low was the perfect label for it, as the sounds were very characteristic of that label.

¿Estás preparando nuevos lanzamientos o colaboraciones?

Are you preparing any new releases or collaborations?

Can you give us a preview of what your fans can expect from your music in the near future?

The truth is that I am very happy with the works that will be released in the coming months. I can only give you a sneak preview (for now) of an EP that will be released at the end of June on the Brazilian label Laguna Music and which includes a remix by new talent Brad Brunner.

How has your experience been in this market and how do you see the evolution of electronic music there?

I’ve been working a lot in the US for 4 or 5 years now and, also with the Row brand, we are doing more and more events there. We have residencies in the best club in New York, the Brooklyng Mirage, and in The factory Town in Miami or even, these last years, in the famous Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas. It’s a huge market, you can imagine. A country of 400 million people that is bigger than the whole of Europe and with a strong economy has a lot of potential and right now it’s in full expansion and evolution. It’s a key market for any artist today.

How do you manage to maintain the essence of your sound over the years and how do you decide to experiment with new elements in your productions?

It’s obvious that music is constantly evolving and very fast, at the same pace as the new technologies and tools that we producers have to compose. From my beginnings I have always tried to have a recognisable style, something that sounded like me both in production and in my DJ set. Obviously, the tech house that sounds now has little to do with the tech house of ten years ago, which was more tribal, percussive and groovy. Now the sounds are drier. More minimal.

Fewer elements are used, which makes the sound quality much better.

A medida que continúas expandiendo tu música globalmente y explorando nuevos horizontes sonoros, ¿hay algún proyecto o aspiración particular que te gustaría realizar en el futuro?

A medio plazo no descarto la posibilidad de irme a vivir un tiempo a América. Posiblemente para dedicarme a fondo a ese mercado ya que, como os comenté antes, es prioritario para mí. Pero de momento es solo una idea . Estoy muy a gusto en España también. A largo plazo, algún día me gustaría tener mi propio club en algún lugar, o como mínimo mi propia fiesta :-) ¿Podrías compartirnos qué impacto tuvo este reconocimiento en tu desarrollo profesional y en tu enfoque musical?

Could you share with us what impact this recognition had on your professional development and musical approach?

Siempre es bueno obtener el reconocimiento de la industria. Ganar un premio así es algo que a uno, a nivel personal, le llena de orgullo y hace que, de repente, todo valga la pena. Da mucha motivación para seguir porque entiendes que vas por el buen camino. Digamos que te reafirma en tu trabajo, en tu idea. Pero tampoco nada mas allá de eso, seguí siendo la misma persona al día siguiente (risas).

It’s always good to get recognition from the industry. Winning an award like this is something that, on a personal level, fills you with pride and suddenly makes it all worthwhile. It gives you a lot of motivation to keep going because you understand that you are on the right track. Let’s say it reaffirms you in your work, in your idea.

But nothing beyond that either, I was still the same person the next day (laughs).

As you continue to expand your music globally and explore new sonic horizons, are there any particular projects or aspirations you would like to pursue in the future?

In the medium term I don’t rule out the possibility of moving to America for a while. Possibly to dedicate myself fully to that market since, as I mentioned before, it is a priority for me. But for the moment it is just an idea. I am also very happy in Spain. In the long term, one day I would like to have my own club somewhere, or at least my own party :-)

El productor colombiano David Gtronic, que vive en Berlín, está aprovechando más que nunca sus dos mayores habilidades. La primera es un sexto sentido musical fuera de lo común y la segunda son unas ganas de trabajar incansablemente a lo largo de los años. David lleva desde 2011 publicando música y asociándose con una gran cantidad de sellos y artistas distintos a lo largo de muchas microfases que simbolizan su mentalidad abierta. Berlin-based Colombian producer David Gtronic is harnessing his two greatest skills more than ever. The first is an uncanny musical sixth sense and the second is a desire to work tirelessly over the years. David has (since 2011) been releasing music and partnering with a plethora of different labels and artists over many micro-phases that symbolise his open-mindedness. Keen to evolve, draw from different influences and innovative ideas, he has put into practice all kinds of moods with an extremely advanced use and knowledge of percussion and a taste for evoking different moods with harmonic progressions that use subtlety in keeping with the principle of “less is more”. So far in 2024 he has already released several gems through ‘Sapphire’ on Sci+Tec, ‘Eternal Tandem’ and ‘Vibrant Illusions’ on Personality Disorder and a remix for Cristina Lazic on her ‘Luna EP’.

Frank Heinrich, known as Reboot, is a wizard in the studio by dint of putting in more hours than anyone else into the art of sound sculpting and can boast of having performed in the world’s most renowned booths after leaving his banking profession behind. Mixing genres such as Latin, Dub, Reggae, Jazz and Funk, Reboot helped shape the new Frankfurt sound and was a vital presence on Luciano’s Vagabundos label and has released on major labels, including his best known work ‘Caminando’ which is part of a discography of over 300 releases, with two new albums due in 2024.

Hace un año, Reboot y David Gtronic empezaron a trabajar juntos en nuevos temas que sacaron en formato vinilo a principios de este 2024 a través de Into The Wizard’s Sleeve. Antes incluso de su lanzamiento, ya agotó todas las unidades. Emocionados, programaron otra tirada de vinilos con la grata sorpresa de que, en cuestión de tres días, vendieron todo. Con este subidón por la recepción de su trabajo y aprovechando que sintieron una muy buena conexión y química en el estudio, han decidido sacar más material empujados por la pulsión de explicar una historia compartida. Ahora, el álbum saldrá completo en todas las plataformas a través del sello de Gtronic llamado Personality Disorder Music. Así nace ‘Head’s Above Water’, un LP a través del cual David Gtronic y Reboot quieren contar el espíritu de superación necesario para dedicarse a su pasión, pasando por muchas etapas difíciles como artistas. El objetivo es dejar claro que el esfuerzo por mantener la cabeza alta (de ahí Head’s Above Water) y luchar hasta el final es primordial en esta industria, y en la vida. Este álbum se publicará el 28 de junio, y tiene una influencia del breakbeat y bass de los años 90 que, recientemente, está viviendo un resurgimiento europeo incontestable.

A year ago, Reboot and David Gtronic started working together on new tracks, which they released on vinyl at the beginning of 2024 via Into The Wizard’s Sleeve. Even before its release, it sold out. Excitedly, they scheduled another vinyl run with the pleasant surprise that, in a matter of three days, they sold out. With this high from the reception of their work and taking advantage of the fact that they felt a very good connection and chemistry in the studio, they have decided to release more material, driven by the urge to tell a shared story. Now, the album will be released in full on all platforms through Gtronic’s label Personality Disorder Music.

Thus is born ‘Head’s Above Water’, an LP through which David Gtronic and Reboot want to tell the story of the overcoming spirit necessary to dedicate themselves to their passion, going through many difficult stages as artists. The aim is to make it clear that the effort to keep your head up (hence Head’s Above Water) and fight to the end is paramount in this industry, and in life. This album will be released on 28 June, and is influenced by 90s breakbeat and bass, which has recently been experiencing an undeniable European resurgence.

Ver a estos dos legends en el estudio y comprender lo que hacen debe ser más difícil que una clase de física cuántica. No es algo que se pueda imitar solo con verlo. El sonido que presenta el LP ‘Head’s Above Water’ es de una calidad del más alto nivel que obliga a hacer una escucha activa de los once temas que conforman el largo. No es ninguna exageración comentar que que es tremendamente difícil obtener un sonido percusivo tan potente a la vez que abrumadoramente cálido, con una disposición del low-end que quita el aliento.

El bajo se presenta agresividad al mismo tiempo que ofrece una profundidad ilimitada. Todo ello sin comprometer la pegada y el boom de los bombos. ¿Cómo se logra eso? Ya no es solo ingeniería de sonido, sino que supone una habilidad, dedicación y oído al alcance de muy pocos.

Watching these two legends in the studio and understanding what they do must be harder than a quantum physics class. It’s not something you can imitate just by watching. The sound presented by the ‘Head’s Above Water’ LP is of the highest quality, forcing you to actively listen to the eleven tracks that make up the full-length. It is no exaggeration to say that it is tremendously difficult to obtain such a powerful yet overwhelmingly warm percussive sound, with a breathtaking low-end arrangement. The bass presents aggressiveness while offering unlimited depth.

All this without compromising the punch and boom of the kick drums. How is that achieved? It’s no longer just sound engineering, it’s a skill, dedication and ear that only a few people have.

odil La propuesta musical más dura de esta edición de Mixmag viene de la mano de ODIL. El DJ y productor barcelonés juega con dos personalidades distintas en la cabina. Por un lado, lleva años de bolos continuos bajo su nombre Alberto Herrera. De alguna forma, ese curro tan asiduo le ha ayudado a dar rienda suelta a sus ansias artísticas más primarias que recogen un surtido de influencias muy relacionadas con la vertiente más dura del techno como el hard techno y el hardgroove –entiéndase el énfasis en el “hard”. Este verano, a parte de shows bajo su alias duro ODIL, tiene preparado un EP con dos contundentes tracks que encontrarán su mejor aliado en las luces estroboscópicas y el ritmo constante del club.

The toughest musical proposal of this edition of Mixmag comes from ODIL. The DJ and producer from Barcelona plays with two different personalities in the booth. On the one hand, he has been gigging continuously for years under his own name Alberto Herrera. In a way, this assiduous job has helped him to give free rein to his most primal artistic cravings, which include an assortment of influences closely related to the hardest side of techno, such as hard techno and hardgroove, with the emphasis on ‘hard’. ¿Empezaste muy joven con esto de ¿Qué es lo que más te inspira para producir un tema? la música?

What inspires you the most to produce a track?

Las experiencias y emociones personales es lo que más me inspira a la hora de crear un nuevo tema.

Ponerme delante del teclado, explorar nuevos sonidos, voces… Eso juega un papel importante a la hora de despertar mi creatividad.

Personal experiences and emotions is what inspires me the most when creating a new track. Getting in front of the keyboard, exploring new sounds, vocals... That plays an important role in awakening my creativity.

What items do you use to produce?

¿Cuál es el sello, o colectivo, o mo- El DAW que siempre he utilizado es vida que más te interesa actual- Logic Pro. También utilizo un teclado Akai y unos Krk. The DAW I’ve always used is Logic Pro. I also use an Akai keyboard and some Krk. Simple at first glance, but it’s what’s inside the laptop that’s important. At the moment, as far as plugins go, I use Diva, Sylenth and Serum.

Pues sí, todo empezó de muy pequeño. La profesora de parvulario vio que se me daban bien las cosas que hacíamos con instrumentos y de ahí surgió que mis padres me llevaran a una academia de música (Academia Marshall) en la que cursé solfeo y piano durante trece años.

¿Cómo describirías tu sonido?

Producciones con mucha fuerza, dinámicas y con personalidad.

Did you start very young in music?

Yes, it all started when I was very young. My kindergarten teacher saw that I was good at things we did with instruments and that’s when my parents took me to a music academy (Marshall Academy) where I studied music theory and piano for thirteen years.

What is the label, collective or movement that interests you most at the moment?

When I was a teenager I was really into gabber and all that stuff, but it gradually faded away: few parties and little movement with that genre... Until now, with this new hard wave. This opens up a range of styles that identify me, such as the combination of hardtechno and hardgroove.

How would you describe your sound?

Productions with a lot of strength, dynamics and personality.

¿Cómo es que decidiste introducirte de nuevo en la escena como ODIL, en vez de como Alberto Herrera?

Bueno, Alberto Herrera sigue como residente de una de las mejores salas de Barcelona, lo que conlleva tocar varios estilos musicales. Por eso quería centrarme en un nuevo proyecto, un nuevo reto, dejar mi trabajo de día para centrar todas esas horas en producir.

Por eso decidí darle vida a ODIL y caracterizarme por un estilo enfocado a lo que de verdad me hace vibrar cuando estoy delante de los platos. ¿Sigues siendo igual de raver que antes de dedicarte a la música?

Cuando el trabajo me lo permite, la verdad. Llevo bastantes años trabajando de noche y eso significa que los fines de semana los tengo complicados, por eso mis salidas son de día o entre semana. ¿Quieres aprovechar para anunciar algo?

En verano saldrá mi cuarto EP ‘GENESIS’. Serán dos temas cargados de energía y contundencia. Dos temas que son muy diferenciales con todo lo que he sacado hasta ahora.

Eso sí: sin perder el estilo.

How is it that you decided to re-enter the scene as ODIL, instead of Alberto Herrera?

¿Qué te mola escuchar que sea to- What do you like to listen to that is talmente distinto a lo que pinchas totally different from what you DJ and produce? y produces?

El numetal y el heavy metal son los dos estilos que me han acompañado toda la vida. También la música de los 60, 70 y 80 y, sobre todo, en lo que soy más friki es con las bandas sonoras de películas.

Numetal and heavy metal are the two styles that have been with me all my life. Also music from the 60‘s, 70’s and 80’s and, above all, what I’m the biggest fan of is movie soundtracks.

¿Si tuvieses que elegir solo plugins, If you had to choose only plugins, or only hardware? o solo hardware?

La combinación de las dos seria perfecta. Lo que pasa es que el espacio es fundamental para poder disfrutarlos. Por comodidad, los plugins son lo más. Ahora, si te mola llegar a otro nivel de sensaciones y demás, me quedo con hardware.

The combination of the two would be perfect. What happens is that space is essential to be able to enjoy them. For convenience, plugins are the best. Now, if you want to get to another level of sensations and so on, I’d go with hardware.

Well, Alberto Herrera is still a resident of one of the best venues in Barcelona, which means playing various styles of music. That’s why I wanted to focus on a new project, a new challenge, leaving my day job to focus all those hours on producing. That’s why I decided to give life to ODIL and characterize myself by a style focused on what really makes me vibrate when I’m in front of the decks.

Are you still as raver as you were before you got into music?

When work allows me to, to be honest. I’ve been working at night for quite a few years now and that means that weekends are difficult for me, so I go out during the day or on weekdays.

Do you want to take this opportunity to announce something?

In the summer my fourth EP ‘GENESIS’ will be released. It will be two tracks full of energy and forcefulness. Two songs that are very different from everything I’ve released so far. Of course: without losing the style.

TECHNICAL ONSLAUGHT ‘THE CALLING’ [ALLABI RECORDS] En el universo de la música electrónica, hay ciertos lanzamientos que resisten la prueba del tiempo y se mantienen eternos en el panorama musical. Uno de estos tesoros perdidos emerge ahora del pasado en forma de una reedición elaborada por Rawax: el legendario 12” de Technical Onslaught, también conocido como Joey Beltram, editado por el sello Allabi de Brooklyn en 1990. Este disco, el segundo y último lanzamiento del sello, sigue siendo tan audaz y futurista como el día en que emergió por primera vez en las sombras del underground neoyorquino. La primera cara de este vinilo se encuentra “The Calling”, una experiencia sensorial inigualable con una combinacion de sonidos electro y breakbeats infundidos con las nuevas influencias del techno. En el lado B es donde la verdadera magia de este disco se revela en su plenitud. “Eyes Of The Mind” es un viaje introspectivo a través de paisajes sonoros, donde los ritmos y sintetizadores se combinan para transmitir una sensacion de misterio y melancolía. Esta reedicion del 12” es más que una simple colección de canciones; es un testimonio perdurable de la creatividad y la visión de un pionero de la música electrónica. Un tributo merecido a un clásico perdido en el tiempo.

DYNAMIC FORCES ‘THE VISION EP’ [BE AS ONE] Dynamic Forces, el dúo italiano de música electrónica, presento su álbum “The Vision”, editado bajo el sello discográfico Be As One Imprint, una obra que destaca por su capacidad para fusionar diversos géneros y ofrecer una experiencia auditiva única.

Las pistas mas destacadas son “The Vision”, donde el dúo utiliza sonidos que generan ambientes espaciales, sumergiendo al oyente en una atmósfera cósmica que invita a la contemplación y “The Brightside”, una pista que evoca la nostalgia de los temas de los años 2000 con sus melodías pegajosas y ritmos tribales. Estas pistas demuestran la versatilidad que poseen para explorar diferentes estilos dentro del ámbito electrónico, mientras que al mismo tiempo ofrece un sonido fresco y actualizado. CONVEXTION ‘AFTERIMAGE’ [FORGOTTEN FUTURE RECORDS] Una vez más, Gerard Hanson, conocido como Convextion aka E.R.P, nos cautiva con su álbum “Afterimage”, lanzado bajo el sello discográfico Forgotten Future (Texas, USA).

Fusionando el electro con influencias del New Wave, Sci-Fi y el Ambient, cada pista invita a explorar universos paralelos, ofreciendo una experiencia auditiva única. A veces te lleva a la pista de baile, mientras que en otros momentos te invita a sentarte en tu habitación y apreciar cada sonido. “Burning Question” da inicio a este fascinante viaje a través del álbum. Recomiendo encarecidamente escucharlo con atención para sumergirse por completo en la experiencia sonora que ofrece el artista.

CEM3340 ‘POLARIS’ [LUNAR ORBITER] CEM3340, un artista de Bari, Italia, nos sumerge en las raíces del Electro con su álbum “Polaris 2”. Con una mezcla de elementos clásicos y su toque distintivo, CEM3340 crea paisajes sonoros oscuros y cinematográficos que evocan imágenes de películas de terror de los ‘80s. El tercer y último track del álbum, “007013200”, ejemplifica su maestría en fusionar vocales con vocoder para crear un ambiente único para el género.

VOLPE ‘THE SOUL IS HEALED’ [TRANSCEND] Volpe, el talentoso artista argentino, está expandiendo audazmente su sonido en la vibrante escena musical de Berlín con su EP “The Soul Is Healed”. Este álbum es una exploración que combina lo orgánico con lo electrónico, creando un sonido fresco y contemporáneo del sonido Dub Techno que no solo destaca por su calidad musical, sino también por ser un testimonio del viaje artístico y personal del artista, estableciendo un estándar elevado para la creatividad y la profundidad emocional dejando una marca en el panorama musical actual. VARIOUS ARTIST - CQTR003 COQUETO RECORDS Coqueto presenta su tercera referencia. En esta ocasión, se trata de un Various Artist que incluye a cuatro destacados artistas: Brian Topham, Rufo, Acid Charlie y Rambal Cochet. Cada uno de ellos aporta su propio estilo y su toque único a este gran disco. Este lanzamiento es uno de esos que no tienes que perderte. El track A2 se distingue por contar con una excelente referencia a Depeche Mode, ademas de una esencia electro que lo caracteriza y lo hace destacar. El resto de los temas también son dignos de mención. Evocan una poderosa vibra underground que tendran la capacidad de dominar cualquier dancefloor exigente. No le pierdas la vista, las copias son limitadas y no tiene repress.

PANICO EN DIRECTO - TELEVISION VOYKOT El primer lanzamiento del sello, así como de Pánico En Directo, un productor argentino residente en Barcelona, ha sido un gran descubrimiento para muchos selectores. Este mini LP cuenta con 6 pistas, cada una con su propia historia retorcida, melodías misteriosas y atrevidas, percusiones robustas y un poderoso bassline que evocan el EBM, Synthpop, Electro y Techno. El álbum ya se encuentra a la venta y se distribuye a través de Outside In.

LVCA & OTIS A PROMISE IN THE COLD NIGHT EP BORDELLO A PARIGI Dos talentosos italianos se han unido para crear este EP para el sello Bordello A Parigi. Sin lugar a dudas, sus influencias están claramente presentes en cada nota, con el italo-disco, New Beat y el uso distintivo de vocoders que definen la esencia del disco. Pero lo mejor es ver cómo estos artistas han logrado adaptar estas influencias a su sonido particular y analógico, creando algo verdaderamente único. Esta es la primera colaboración entre Lvca y Otis, dos artistas con una larga y respetada trayectoria en la escena underground del Electro/Techno/House, han demostrado ser capaces de congeniar perfectamente para crear un EP sólido y cohesivo. En él encontrarás tanto breakbeats como 4x4, basslines asesinas y synths con muchas variaciones, pero también una atmósfera de paz y suavidad que equilibra el conjunto. Lo mejor que podrías hacer ahora es buscar este EP y escucharlo te garantizo que no te arrepentirás de darle una oportunidad.

NUCLEAR WASTE / CORP NUCLEAR CORPORATION CUPULA RECORDS. En la quinta referencia del sello barcelonés Cúpula, nos adentramos en una colaboración entre Nuclear Waste y Corp. Este sólido EP, dominado por el electro, presenta fuertes influencias de new wave, EBM y Synth Pop, convirtiéndolo en una excelente elección para aquellos que buscan sonidos antiguos mezclados en producciones modernas. El EP contiene 4 pistas que transmiten diferentes sensaciones. Sin duda, el A1 y B2 son perfectos para el peak time de la noche, mientras que el A2 y B1 son suaves, con ritmos break y acids. Un EP completo que merece estar en tu colección.

MACHINEDRUM ‘3FOR82’ [ZEN299] Travis Stewart aprovechó el día exacto de su cumpleaños del año pasado para ponerse a componer el que ha sido su onceavo álbum. Para ello, se fue al desierto de Joshua Tree, donde ya ha peregrinado varias veces para empezar proyectos nuevos y lo primero que hizo fue crear una librería de samples con sonidos grabados por él. Se forzó a ceñirse al máximo a ese pack de sonidos DIY y esbozó una cuarentena de ideas en un mes y, a partir de ahí, eligió las doce que tenían más potencial. Tiene 42 años y ya hace más de 25 que publica su arte de forma profesional y, lo que me encanta de este hombre es que hace las cosas con las ganas y la frescura de un artista emergente. Nada de pureta, nada de resabiado, simplemente buen gusto a tope y, eso sí, mucha sabiduría y millones de horas de experiencia haciendo canciones. La riqueza en la propuesta y las centellantes colaboraciones de artistas como Tinashe, Topaz jones, Duckwrth, ROZET o Ezri hacen que recuerde cuánto flipé aquella primera vez que descubrí la música de Machinedrum con el tremendísimo ‘Vapor City’ de 2013.

1-800 GIRLS ‘LOOKING BACK / BECAUSE OF YOU’ [S-R] Jake Stewart, productor y DJ afincado en Bristol, ha sabido aprovechar la esencia de la cultura rave del Reino Unido a través de su proyecto 1-800 GIRLS, cuyo nombre artístico siempre me ha llamado la atención. 1-800 es algún tipo de prefijo gratuito para empresas en Estados Unidos pero “GIRLS” sigue siendo una incógnita en este contexto. El caso es que 1-800 GIRLS lleva como seis meses de lanzamientos que no tienen otra explicación que una especie de estado de gracia, época maníaca o genialidad transitoria. Con una clarividencia absoluta para saber qué es lo que necesita cada tema, consigue que todos consigan emocionar con solo tres o cuatro elementos. Recomendadísima su sesión para el lavabo más famoso de Berlín (HÖR) en la que ,entre birra y birra, suelta varios unreleased que ojalá publique pronto.

SALUTE ‘MAYBE IT’S U’ [ NINJA TUNE] El artista austriaco salute está viviendo unos meses de exuberante éxito profesional. Se está liando a b2bs con algunos de los DJs más de moda del momento como Barry Can’t Swim o Hamdi. Y cuando no son sets conjuntos, sigue viajando por todo el mundo haciendo sets que mezclan el garage con –a veces demasiado– house. Mientras tanto, está preparando la cuenta atrás para su próximo álbum, que sale a mediados de julio a través de Ninja Tune. Como para pedirle algo más a Diosito. Su último sencillo sigue a otros muy buenos temas como ‘saving flowers’ con Rina Sawayama y ‘system’ que compuso en una casa en el campo que alquiló para trabajar en este nuevo álbum mientras iba invitando a todo tipo de colaboradores para impulsar el sonido del álbum y darle ese toque de eclecticismo que tan común está siendo en los mejores proyectos de estos últimos meses.

CAMEO BLUSH ‘ULTIMATE GREY’ [FUTURE CLASSIC] Cameo Blush hace muchas cosas bien. Pero una de las que más me enganchan es su forma de tratar los samples vocales. He leído en una entrevista que lo que hace es echar las tomas vocales en el Simpler de Ableton y, como estas se choppean directamente y se disponen a lo largo del piano roll, va tirando de gusto y buen criterio para hacer asombrosas lineas vocales. A veces se entienden las letras, y otras solamente utiliza la voz como un elemento tímbrico más, igual que si fuese un sintetizador. Hace unos meses sacó el triple sencillo ‘Silkworm’ a través de Scarlet Tiger, el sello de Ross From Friends, que es una delicia extrema. Como si no se hubiese quedado suficientemente a gusto, un par de meses más tarde sacó este ‘Ultimate Grey’, que es un EP de cinco temas entre los que destacan claramente ‘Verbatim’ y ‘Millennium Fields’ con Pretty Girl. Este último es el ejemplo perfecto de lo que digo: una línea vocal con tanto reverb como contundencia que es para quitarse el sombrero.

JASPER TYGNER ‘BEFORE ME’ [TECHNICOLOUR] Tygner es una celebridad de Instagram en el mundillo se los producers del algoritmo. Se ve que ya lleva bastantes años haciendo música por gusto. Lo que pasó es que, durante la pandemia, empezó a subir una serie de vídeos que se titulaban bedroom raves, creo. Estaban tan guapas que ganó decenas de miles de seguidores, además del beneplácito de los más tochos de la industria.

En Ninja Tune, que no son tontos, han visto el potencial que tiene el joven productor londinense y le han puesto las cosas fáciles para sacar su próximo álbum a través del hermano pequeño del sello, Technicolour. Su directo, muy conseguido, se aprovecha de su multrinstrumentalismo. Sobre todo se le da bien componer líneas y riffs de sinte de lo más memorables. Me recuerda bastante a Lewis Offman, pero sin ser tan exagerado y, ante todo, mucho más inglés.

MACHINEDRUM ‘3FOR82’ [ZEN299] Travis Stewart chose the exact day of his birthday last year to start composing his eleventh album. To do so, he went to the Joshua Tree desert, where he has already made several pilgrimages to start new projects. The first thing he did was to create a library of samples with sounds he had recorded himself. He forced himself to stick as closely as possible to that pack of DIY sounds and sketched out about forty ideas in a month and, from there, chose the twelve that had the most potential. He is 42 years old and has been publishing his art professionally for more than 25 years, and what I love about this man is that he does things with the enthusiasm and freshness of an emerging artist. Nothing old-tasting, nothing sullen, just good taste to the max and, yes, a lot of wisdom and millions of hours of experience making songs. The richness of the proposal and the scintillating collabs with artists like Tinashe, Topaz Jones, Duckwrth, ROZET or Ezri make me remember how much I freaked out that first time I discovered Machinedrum’s music with the tremendous 2013’s ‘Vapor City’.

1-800 GIRLS ‘LOOKING BACK / BECAUSE OF YOU’ [S-R] Bristol-based producer and DJ Jake Stewart has tapped into the essence of UK rave culture through his project 1-800 GIRLS, whose stage name has always caught my attention. 1-800 is some kind of free business prefix in the US, but “GIRLS” remains an unknown in this context. The thing is, 1-800 GIRLS has been releasing for about six months now with no explanation other than some sort of state of grace, manic period or transient genius. With an absolute clairvoyance to know what each track needs, he manages to get them all to emote with only three or four elements. We highly recommend his session for the most famous toilet in Berlin (HÖR) in which, between one beer and the next, he releases several unreleased tracks that I hope he will publish soon.

SALUTE ‘MAYBE IT’S U’ [ NINJA TUNE] Austrian artist salute is living a few months of exuberant professional success.

He’s banging b2bs with some of the hottest DJs of the moment like Barry Can’t Swim or Hamdi. And when he’s not doing that, he’s still travelling the world doing sets that mix garage with - sometimes too much - house. In the meantime, he is preparing the countdown for his next album, due out in midJuly via Ninja Tune. As if to ask the good Lord for something more. His latest single follows other very good tracks like ‘saving flowers’ with Rina Sawayama and ‘system’ which he composed in a house in the countryside that he rented to work on this new album while inviting all kinds of collaborators to boost the sound of the album and give it that touch of eclecticism that is so common in the best projects of the last few months.

CAMEO BLUSH ‘ULTIMATE GREY’ [FUTURE CLASSIC] Cameo Blush does a lot of things well. But one of the things that hooks me the most is the way he handles vocal samples. I read in an interview that what he does is throw the vocal takes into Ableton’s Simpler and he uses both good taste and good judgement to make amazing vocal lines. Sometimes the lyrics are understood, and sometimes he just uses the voice as another timbral element, as if it were a synth. A few weeks back he released the triple single ‘Silkworm’ on Scarlet Tiger, Ross From Friends’ label, which is an extreme delight.

As if that wasn’t enough of a treat, a couple of months later he released this ‘Ultimate Grey’, which is a five track EP with ‘Verbatim’ and ‘Millennium Fields’ featuring Pretty Girl clearly standing out. The latter is the perfect example of what I’m talking about: a vocal line with both reverb and forcefulness that is to take your hat off to.

JASPER TYGNER ‘BEFORE ME’ [TECHNICOLOUR] Tygner is an Instagram celebrity in the world of algorithm producers. It’s clear that he’s been making music for quite a few years now for fun. What happened is that, during the pandemic, he started uploading a series of videos called bedroom raves, I think. They were so beautiful that he gained tens of thousands of followers, as well as the approval of the industry’s biggest names. Ninja Tune, who are no fools, have seen the young London producer’s potential and have made it easy for him to release his next album through the label’s little brother, Technicolour. His very successful live set takes advantage of his multiinstrumentalism. He is especially good at composing memorable synth lines and riffs. He reminds me a lot of Lewis Offman, but without being so over the top and, above all, much more English.

Su EP de hace unos años, titulado ‘Turn Up’, contiene otros tres cortes igual de pulidos. Otro nombre a tener en cuenta en este sello es Code Breakerz, con producciones cargadas de acid breaks como ‘In Your Face’, junto a Majestic Noise, ‘Acidground’ y ‘Deodorant’ junto a Miau, o ‘4C1D’ en solitario. INTRO - RITUAL (REMASTERED) HYBRID RECORDS Nacho Sotomayor es un músico y productor de amplia trayectoria profesional, que durante dos décadas nos fue ofreciendo las 10 entregas que componen su serie ‘La Roca’ de ambient y downtempo. Su trabajo se ha orientado casi en la totalidad a estos sonidos más chill, aunque caben destacar algunas producciones en otros ámbitos y para otros artistas. Imprescindible en algunas entregas de recopilatorios míticos como Buddha Bar (París) o Café del Mar (Ibiza). La mezcla de flamenco con electrónica no es algo nuevo, aunque algunos quieran atribuirlo a ciertos artistas contemporáneos, tampoco lo son los ritmos breaks bajados de BPM con sonidos ambient o balearic. Para muestra un botón, y qué mejor manera de dar al Cesar, lo que es del Cesar que con este relanzamiento remasterizado de su track ‘Ritual’ de 1998 y que escuché por primera vez en el CD de Future Music Nº 24.

ANDREW AZARA ‘GET IT UP’ [CECILLE RECORDS] Este tema me trae buenos recuerdos y su historia es especial. Hace unos meses le presté mi studio a Andrew Azara en Barcelona y ahi surgió este tema. Lo elegante del tema definitivamente es el juego del bajo con las congas. Este sello discográfico se caracteriza por impulsar musica de pista decorada con elementos del tech house clásico y nos transporta a un sonido old school que me recuerda un poco a Jeremy Sylvester. Andrew ha firmado en sellos como Djbali, Politics Of Dancing, Moan, Heavy House Society, entre otros.

FRANKY RIZARDO ‘BLOSHY (EXTENDED MIX) [8BIT] En esta ocasión tenemos a Franky Rizaro en esta edición y me complace hablar de su tema Bloshy. Este tema nos deleita el oido con un elegante estilo del tech house lleno de sonidos atmosféricos, percusiones contagiosas y una base armónica bastante minimalista. Y perfecta para poner la pista en buena energía.

Las congas y el bajo hacen de este tema un groove eterno lleno de altas y bajas.

Las vocales y los acordes que escuchamos en la bajada mantienen un suspenso que elevan la energía al cien, permitiendo que este track funcione a cualquier hora de un set.

SAENZ ‘TOM BOM’ [VENGO RECORDS] Saenz nos deleita con su EP titulado “Minded” firmado en el sello Vengo Records. El productor argentino hace su debut en este sello con dos temas originales y dos remixes que acompañan el EP. Uno con un giro más house de la mano de Cosenza y otro apuntando al estilo deep tech de la mano de C.I.S.C.O. Tom Bom juega a lo largo del tema con texturas de fondo, mucho swing en las percusiones y sobre todo muchos toms que lo hacen una herramienta perfecta para calentar la pista

ARGENIS BRITO, BLOODY MARY ‘SED NON SATIATA (SHONKY’S PAPREEK LOST MINIOK MIX) [CONTEXTERRIOR] Sed Non Satiata lo descubrí hace un tiempo y fue gracias a mi curiosidad por ver qué más había en la discografía del sello Contexterrior, el cual tiene muchas producciones de Shonky, Ricardo Villalobos, Anthea y muchos más. Este tema tiene algo muy auténtico en las vocales y sus frases que te hipnotizan en la bajada. La base rítmica marcada del house y el bajo que se repite una y otra vez es otra de las joyas que tiene este tema. Shonky, caracterizado por sus sonidos sencillos pero a su vez complejos, es uno de mis productores favoritos y este tema lo llevo en mi USB.

REVIEW CLÁSICO

TERRENCE PARKER ‘WELCOME TO SOUTHFIELD’ [INTANGIBLE RECORDS] Hablar de Terrence Parker es como hablar de los dioses dentro del genero house clásico. La elegancia de sus beats y sus acordes clásicos del piano hacen de este productor un autentico artista. Este tema, aparte de ser una hermosa pieza musical, tiene unos samples de piano filtrados que me recuerdan mucho a la dinámica que utilizaba Daft Punk para trabajar sus producciones. El funk en el bajo es algo que te contagia desde los primeros segundos. Terrence Parker, Inland Knights, Phil Weeks, Sound Of the Suburbs son de los productores que más admiro y disfruto escuchando a la hora de buscar house clásicos.

ANDREW AZARA ‘GET IT UP’ [CECILLE RECORDS] This track brings back good memories and its history is special. A few months ago I lent my studio to Andrew Azara in Barcelona and that’s where this track came from. The elegant part of the track is definitely the play of the bass with the congas. SAENZ ‘TOM BOM’ [VENGO RECORDS] Saenz delights us with his EP titled “Minded” signed to Vengo Records. The Argentine producer makes his debut on this label with two original tracks and two remixes that accompany the EP. One with a more house twist by Cosenza and the other with a deep tech style by C.I.S.C.O. Tom Bom plays throughout the track with background textures, a lot of swing in the percussions and above all a lot of toms that make it a perfect tool to warm up the dancefloor.

ARGENIS BRITO, BLOODY MARY ‘SED NON SATIATA (SHONKY’S PAPREEK LOST MINIOK MIX) [CONTEXTERRIOR] Sed Non Satiata I discovered a while ago and it was thanks to my curiosity to see what else was in the discography of the label Contexterrior, which has many productions by Shonky, Ricardo Villalobos, Anthea and many more. This track has something very authentic in its vocals and phrases that hypnotize you on the way down. The rhythmic house base and the bass that repeats over and over again is another of the jewels of this track. Shonky, characterised by his simple yet complex sounds, is one of my favourite producers and this track is on my USB.

TERRENCE PARKER ‘WELCOME TO SOUTHFIELD’ [INTANGIBLE RECORDS] Talking about Terrence Parker is like talking about the gods in the classic house genre. The elegance of his beats and his classic piano chords make this producer a true artist. This track, apart from being a beautiful piece of music, has some filtered piano samples that remind me a lot of the dynamics that Daft Punk used to work on their productions. The funk in the bass is something that infects you from the first seconds. Terrence Parker, Inland Knights, Phil Weeks, Sound Of the Suburbs are some of the producers I most admire and enjoy listening to when looking for house classics.
