Maktab Miniature Painting School 30 November 2019 - 9 February 2020 QUAD Gallery Two
The Maktab Miniature Painting School was a live durational event from 28 November – 9 December 2019. The works you see in this exhibition are on display until 9 February 2020. ‘Maktab’ is Arabic for ‘school’; it featured seven emerging miniature painting artists from Lahore, Pakistan – all former students of Imran Qureshi: Shah Abdullah, Fizza Hussain, Syed Hussain, Sajid Khan, Zarina Khan, Tahir Ali Sadiq and Eesha Suhail. The artists all took part in the first Maktab at the Lahore Biennale in 2018. All of the works you see in this exhibition were made by the Maktab artists in the gallery space together with a group of artists from the UK. The UK artists were: Anisha Parmar, Ashok Mistry, Nisa Khan, Farida Makki, Stephani-louise Dalton, Lois Sabet and Jackie Berridge. Not all of the UK artists were able to produce work for the exhibition, due to work and family commitments, but were involved in classes taught by the seven Pakistani Maktab artists and Imran Qureshi (as in the image above). Please see overleaf for artist names; work titles soon! Also included in the exhibition are works by from Imran Qureshi’s current students from the National College of Art, Lahore. The first Maktab was a project initiated by Aga Khan Museum of Islamic Art, Toronto; National College of Arts Lahore, and Lahore Biennale Foundation.
