1 Sharbendu De Imagined Homeland The Lisu tribe lives in the forests of Namdapha National Park on the India-Myanmar border, Arunachal Pradesh, India. In 1983, the Indian government converted the native land without consultation and declared them as illegal, setting off decades of marginalisation. In a largely unadministered terrain, people survive without most modern amenities. Over 120km to the nearest town, they cohabit symbiotically with nature as a self-sufficient community. This work explores the relationship between humans, nature and questions what lessons does this way of life offer our society, far removed from nature.

3 Lucia Sekerková (Slovakia) Vrăjitoare – witches, fortune tellers, healers In the past fortune-telling had a strong tradition within travelling Roma groups in Europe. Primarily attributed to older Romanian Wallachian Roma women, clients were found wherever the caravans stopped. This work records the consequences of modernisation, which has transformed this profession. Today these women no longer walk the streets in search of palms, the clients find them through social media. Instead of palm reading or tea leaves, readings are made on-line. As a business inherited across generations, even nine year old girls are starting their promotional “vrăjitoare” profiles on the Facebook.

2 Dylan Hausthor (USA) Past the Pond, Setting Fires My friend lit another friend’s barn on fire. She set the blaze out of spite, incited by gossip. While watching the fire, she – who was 7 months pregnant – felt her waters break, going into labour early and ran across the street to the property owner’s house demanding a ride to the hospital. Small-town gossip, elementary humanity, the land and spectacle inspire the stories in my work. My images focus on the instability of storytelling, I’m interested in pushing past traditional documentary towards a much more human sensibility, faulted and broken.

4 Camillo Pasquarelli The valley of shadows Kashmir is a territory disputed by India and Pakistan, since 1947, and one of the most militarized zones in the world. In 2010 the Indian government provided the security forces with a new weapon. Shotgun shells filled with hundreds of small lead pellets. Defined as a “non-lethal” weapon, to be aimed at the lower part of the body during protests. Since 2016, the pellet guns have been used extensively. According to a UN report, the weapon is responsible for blinding 1000 people and killing dozens. Many of the victims not involved in the protests are left partially or totally blind, they refer to the darkness in their lives and avoid speaking openly, fearing retaliation by the police.

5 Synchrodogs (Tania Shcheglova &Roman Noven) (Ukraine) Slightly Altered The artists went into a one-month visit to the Carpathian Mountains to discover how far humans have intruded upon the wild territories. People have always affected the nature around them, Slightly Altered is a reflection on and intervention into how we are intertwined with the earth and on the interdependency of humans and nature. Over the month of travelling they saw thousands of trees illegally cut, taxidermy animals in every mountain restaurant and no live animal in the forest. Synchrodogs reflect upon how much we, like all life, both alter our environment and are altered by it. Printing kindly supported by ChromaLuxe and Loxley Colour.
