Architecture Frequently Asked Questions I am not predicted AAA (or equivalent). Is there any point in applying? Yes. We make offers to students whose predicted grades are below our standard offer. If we make an offer, it is likely to still be the standard offer BUT if a student does not meet the conditions of the offer in August they are automatically reconsidered as part of our normal processes at that time. Every year we are able to accept a few students who narrowly missed their offer. At this point in the cycle, we look carefully at the portfolio as well as achieved grades. I have already got my A levels, but did not get AAA. Should I still apply? If you have dropped by only one or two grades (ABB or equivalent) then yes, apply. Our decision will be based on the portfolio, and a good portfolio can help to compensate for achieved grades which are lower than our normal conditional offer. If you have dropped below this, then you may wish to consider either re-sitting you’re a-levels or taking a Foundation Diploma (Level 3 only) in Art and Design, to improve your portfolio and academic profile. Do you include Extended Project (EPQ) in the offer? Yes – as long as it is relevant to Architecture. Where it is, we may make a dual offer i.e. AAA excluding General Studies, or AAB plus B in the EPQ. Do you include General Studies/Global Perspecitves/Welsh Bacc Skills certificate or Welsh Baccalareat Diploma? Not at the offer stage, but if you miss the conditions of the offer in August, these qualifications are taken into consideration at that point in time. I don’t have GCSE Maths grade B, should I still apply? While we prefer students to have B in Maths, a good portfolio can help to compensate for this, along with A level subjects chosen. If you do end up studying at Newcastle University, you may be encouraged to take advantage of the University Maths Aid.
