More than a Scholarship
Scholarship More than a

The Mitchell Institute’s work extends far beyond the initial scholarship. From the moment a Scholar is selected, they become part of a statewide network of mentorship, leadership development, and community: one built to carry them through college and into meaningful careers and lives.

That commitment has grown steadily over 30 years, shaped by a founding belief that still guides everything we do:
NO MAINE STUDENT WITH THE QUALIFICATIONS AND AMBITION TO PURSUE A COLLEGE EDUCATION SHOULD BE DENIED THAT OPPORTUNITY DUE TO LIMITED FINANCIAL RESOURCES.
This report is a reflection of that promise and the thousands of students, supporters, and partners who help make it real.

Jared Cash A Message from CEO

Dear Alumni and Friends of the Mitchell Institute,
There is a question I return to often as a reminder of why this work matters: What becomes possible when a young person knows that someone believes in them?
This Annual Report is, in many ways, an answer to that question. In 2025, the Mitchell Institute awarded 200 scholarships — a 50% increase over just three years — representing a $2 million investment in Maine students from Kittery to Fort Kent. Behind that number are young people who arrived at college carrying ambition, resilience, and in many cases, real financial uncertainty. Our job is to make sure they don’t have to carry it alone.
We are grateful — deeply so — to the donors, community, and corporate partners, whose generosity makes that possible. Because of you, more than 56 Scholars received emergency support when hardship hit. Because of you, 104 Scholars and alumni accessed fellowship funding for research, internships, and experiences statewide and globally that would otherwise have been out of reach. And because of you, 89% of Mitchell Scholars graduate within six years — nearly 30 points above the national average. This happens because of your investment not just in tuition, but the full arc of a young person’s life.
As we look to the year ahead, we carry this work forward with purpose. Our strategic plan — Scaling Trust — is not just a growth goal. It is a commitment to reaching more students, in more corners of Maine, with the same personal investment that has defined this organization since its founding. What galvanizes more than 30 years of mission delivery is the 4,200+ Scholars who have become part of this community — and the thousands more whose turn is still ahead. Genius knows no boundary. But it flourishes where there is opportunity. Thank you for helping us build it, together.
With gratitude,
Jared Cash, President and CEO

Access Expanding
OPENING THE DOOR TO HIGHER EDUCATION FOR STUDENTS FROM EVERY PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL IN MAINE.

Every year, the Mitchell Institute awards scholarships to students graduating from public high schools across all of Maine — from Kittery to Fort Kent and from Bethel to Bar Harbor. Geographic reach isn’t incidental to our mission; it’s central to it.
In 2025, the Institute awarded 200 scholarships, representing a $2 million investment in Maine students. That number reflects a 50% increase over just three years as a signal of the Institute’s growing ability to meet need where it exists.

Persistence Supporting
ENSURING THAT STUDENTS WHO BEGIN COLLEGE HAVE THE SUPPORT THEY NEED TO FINISH.
Getting to college is only the beginning. The Mitchell Institute surrounds Scholars with the tools, funding, and relationships to stay, thrive, and graduate.
Fellowships
More than $130,000 was distributed in 2025, reaching 104 Scholars and Alumni. Fellowships support research, internships, and professional development that would otherwise be out of reach.
SOS & SPARC Funds
When unexpected hardship hits — a flat tire, a medical bill, a housing gap — the SOS (Supporting Our Scholars) Fund and SPARC Fund step in. More than $67,000 in emergency funds were distributed in 2025; 56 Scholars received support.

I didn’t really think I was going to go to college. I didn’t think I would be able to afford it.
The Mitchell Institute was huge in being able to choose to go to college. And it’s allowed me to move through life and school more comfortably.
— GWYNETH ADRIAN, 2023 MITCHELL SCHOLAR, CONNECTICUT COLLEGE

HEAR MORE OF GWYNETH’S STORY
Gwyneth Adrian, a 2023 Mitchell Scholar from Cape Elizabeth High School, is embraced by fellow Mitchell community members at a Mitchell Institute event at Prout’s Neck, Maine, in July 2025.

Community Strengthening
BUILDING A LIFELONG COMMUNITY OF SCHOLARS, ALUMNI, AND LEADERS ACROSS MAINE.
Mitchell Scholars don’t graduate and disappear — they join a growing network of leaders working in every sector and corner of Maine. The Institute builds that network intentionally, through programs that connect Scholars with each other, with mentors, and with opportunities to lead.
MILE I & MILE II
The Mitchell Institute Leadership Experience connects Scholars with peers, mentors, and employers across the state. MILE I introduces Scholars to civic and community leadership; MILE II deepens that engagement for Scholars and early alumni.
Personal Connections
No-Agenda Coffees create informal space for Scholars to connect with Institute staff and supporters. Annual campus receptions extend the network at the college level – linking Scholars to nearby resources. The result is an intentional community, a high degree of trust, and the ability for Scholars to find a helpful ear where and when they need it.

You have this group, like a family, that is there to support you. If you need someone to talk to, help navigate something, whatever it is, the Mitchell Institute is there. It is more than financial support. It really is more.
— PAUL LIWANGA, 2022 MITCHELL SCHOLAR, UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MAINE

Paul Liwanga, a 2022 Mitchell Scholar from Portland and a 2025 graduate of the University of Southern Maine appeared in more than 20 games as a defender on the Huskies’ men’s soccer team. Liwanga credits the Mitchell Institute community with providing the support network that helped him thrive in college and beyond.
