Dear Carey Supporters I must begin by thanking all of our supporters for your generous contributions. Your gifts have kept us fiscally sound during this very difficult time. I ask that you pray for us to make wise decisions during these uncertain times. We also need your continued support as the Lord provides the means for you to do so. I cannot believe how God has blessed us. Summer school enrollment set an all-time record. Following the good news about summer enrollment, we have recorded a 3.2% increase for fall term, another record. Measured by the output of our School of Education, WCU is now the largest education program in the State of Mississippi. Add to that growth in the health professions and an all-time high in the Winters School of Music and we can boast of our accomplishments. Our College of Osteopathic Medicine increased enrollment by 50 percent and exceeded their goal. The School of Pharmacy is achieving at a high level and expects to achieve full accreditation in the spring, before the first class graduates. Under the leadership of Dr. Brett Golson as dean, the Cooper School of Missions and Ministry continues to develop programs to meet the needs of the contemporary church, while holding to the Rock of Ages. This is our reason for existence - to prepare our students for the future to provide leadership in all walks of life for our Lord. May the Lord bless and keep you.

“William Carey has always emphasized service to others as we prepare our students to take their places in the community. It’s a core value of the university. In healthcare programs, nursing is where we began, but we’re building on that foundation,” said WCU President Dr. Tommy King.

PHARMACY: In July 2018, the WCU School of Pharmacy opened at the Tradition campus. It is one of only a handful of accelerated pharmacy schools in the country, enabling students to earn their doctoral degrees in under three years.

MEDICAL SCHOOL: In 2010, the WCU College of Osteopathic Medicine opened at the Hattiesburg campus. For a decade, it has accepted 100 students every fall, a total enrollment of 400 students. In September 2019, the medical school was authorized to double the size of its first-year class over three years – ultimately increasing total enrollment to 800 students. HEALTH SCIENCES: The WCU College of Health Sciences added three new options: 1) Doctor of Physical Therapy is fully accredited and its first graduates have

ENROLLMENT: Even as the medical school began preparing for larger first-year classes, the WCU College of Health Sciences was breaking enrollment records in fall 2019 and fall 2020. With growth in health-related programs came the need for an infrastructure “double play.” On Feb. 28, WCU broke ground on a new home for the College of Health Sciences. Located at the northeast corner of the intersection of Tuscan Avenue and Cherry Street, the 74,000-squarefoot facility will house Nursing, Physical

Therapy, Health Information Management, and Health Administration and Education. It is scheduled to open in 2021. The College of Osteopathic Medicine will expand into the buildings vacated by the College of Health Sciences. These include Fail-Asbury Hall, Mary Ross Hall and Thomas Hall. All three buildings are located near the present College of Osteopathic Medicine – allowing for the creation of a medical school complex at WCU’s Hattiesburg campus.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE COLLEGE OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE: SERVANT’S HEART: WCUCOM volunteers helped clean-up efforts in Soso after a mile-wide, EF4 tornado devastated the small town of 400 people on Easter Sunday. U.S. NEWS: In its 2020 rankings, U.S. News & World Report ranked the WCU College of Osteopathic Medicine No. 3 nationwide in producing the highest percentage of primary care residents. The rankings were based on data from 2017 to 2019 and included medical

schools awarding both MD (Doctor of Medicine) and DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) degrees. During that time, 78 percent of WCU’s medical school graduates entered primary care. GROWTH: In preparation for the fall’s larger student body, WCUCOM created new services: 1) Department of Anatomical Sciences, led by Dr. Kenneth “Cal” Hisley; 2) Office of Diversity, led by Dr. Veronica Scott; 3) Office of Graduate Medical Education, led by Dr. Melissa Stephens. PARTNERSHIP: Dr. Seger S. Morris joined WCUCOM as regional assistant

dean for clinical rotations of Baptist Memorial Health Care and director of health policy for the WCU College of Osteopathic Medicine. Morris is president of the Mississippi Osteopathic Medical Association and serves on the board of directors of the American Osteopathic Foundation. BEST MOM: Dr. Fruzsi Johnson was named 2020 Mississippi Mother the Year. HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE COLLEGE OF HEALTH SCIENCES: NURSING OPTIONS: We offer several degree programs: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (pre-licensure and LPN Advanced Placement), RN to BSN, Master of Science, PhD in Nursing Education and Administration, and DNP to PhD in Nursing Education. BATON ROUGE: In February 2020, our Baton Rouge campus graduated its inaugural class of bachelor’s degree nurses – who achieved a 100 percent first-attempt NCLEX pass rate. The program received full approval from the Louisiana State Board of Nursing in August 2020. PREFERRED ADMISSION: High school seniors can qualify for a competitive advantage when applying to health sciences programs. To qualify, students must admit as first-time freshmen, complete prerequisite courses and meet program-specific criteria.

PHYSICAL THERAPY: Our three-year doctoral program graduated its inaugural class in August 2019 and earned full accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education in November 2019. HEALTH ADMINISTRATION & EDUCATION: The HAE program, preparing students for leadership and education roles, accepted its first PhD cohort in fall 2020, adding to existing bachelor’s and master’s degree options. HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT: Now 100 percent online, this fully accredited bachelor’s program keeps up to speed with the quickly changing world of medical record-keeping.

Today, more than 500 science majors and other Carey students master knowledge and skills foundational to the pursuit of professional and graduate degrees – as well as become marketable in a variety of educational, healthcare, and business settings. Over the past 12 years, the number of biological science and chemistry majors has tripled to more than 220 students. This number includes students in pre-professional programs. More than 70 graduates have gone on to pursue doctoral or professional degrees in chemistry, mathematics, microbiology, osteopathic and allopathic medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, pharmacy, veterinarian medicine, and occupational therapy. Many SNBS alumni devote their careers to easing suffering in medical and dental clinics, hospitals, counseling practices, veterinarian clinics, and non-profit organizations. Others enter teaching, where they promote the science and mathematics literacy of the next generation of scientists, engineers, and mathematicians. Still others focus their professional efforts on promoting justice and protecting their communities.

Green Science Hall at the Hattiesburg campus. Green Science was completed in 1970. The historic growth of the School of Natural and Behavioral Sciences tested the capacity of our laboratories and necessitated expansion. ESTABLISHED IN 2007, THE WILLIAM CAREY UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF NATURAL & BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES (SNBS) HAS SIX DEPARTMENTS: Biological Sciences Chemistry and the Physical Sciences Counselor Education (Tradition) Criminal Justice (Tradition) Mathematics Psychology and Counseling Faculty and staff strive to improve the scientific literacy of all students through comprehensive undergraduate and graduate education in a Christian environment. JANUARY 2020, WILLIAM CAREY UNIVERSITY’S SCHOOL OF EDUCATION OFFICIALLY BECAME THE LARGEST IN THE STATE, ACCORDING TO DATA FROM THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION. GRADUATING MORE THAN 500 STUDENTS EVERY YEAR, OVER SUCCESSIVE YEARS, WCU OUTPERFORMED THE NEXT-LARGEST SCHOOL OF EDUCATION BY ALMOST 70 GRADUATES.

“We are all passionate about helping the schools in our state,” said Dr. Ben Burnett, dean of the WCU School of Education. “Having the largest number of graduates from the combination of our graduate and undergraduate programs is encouraging to us – but we still have a long way to go to make a truly significant impact on Mississippi’s chronic teacher shortage.” Dr. Burnett said the School of Education seeks practical ways to tackle the problem, including 1) information sessions for aspiring educators; 2) alternate route programs to help people earn teaching certificates; and 3) scholarships for assistant teachers.

MAY: WCU promoted Dr. Ben Burnett, dean of the WCU School of Education, adding the title of acting executive vice president to his responsibilities. JUNE: As the online summer trimester began, the School of Education set a new enrollment record in the history of the department. With 1,425 students, the SOE surpassed the previous record set in fall 2017 – and marked a 35 percent increase over summer 2019. JULY: Mississippi Department of Education’s top statewide awards for 2020 both went to alumni of the WCU School of Education. Debra Houghton won Administrator of the Year. Ben Austin, a fourth-year social studies teacher from Petal High School, won the Teacher of the Year Award. Both are current WCU students in advanced degree programs. AUGUST: WCU School of Education announced new career pathways for classroom teachers and administrators approved by the Miss. Department of Education: Pre-K Teacher Endorsement; Dyslexia Therapy; Teacher Leader Endorsement; Interscholastic Athletic Administration; and Educational Leadership & Principal Licensure.

WCUSOE alumnus MDE 2020 Teacher of the Year AUGUST: The second year of an undergraduate teacher residency program for 36 undergraduate students began at the Tradition campus in partnership with two Gulf Coast school districts. The program is funded by a three-year, $600,000 grant from the Mississippi Department of Education – one of only three such grants awarded. AUGUST: The School of Education opened the fall trimester with 1,705 students, breaking another overall enrollment record. OCTOBER: The School of Education signed agreements to provide programs with Pearl River Community College, Jackson Public School District and East Mississippi Community College.

William Carey takes pride in providing students with the Carey experience – but the Carey experience isn’t just about taking classes and earning a degree. It is about the moments in between that give students the opportunity to follow their interests and find new ways to be involved while building lasting friendships along the way.

CAREYWOW: From the moment students arrive at William Carey, involvement is fostered through a student orientation called CareyWOW – Carey Welcome and Orientation Weekend. The experience teaches students William Carey’s rich history and shows them what the university has to offer. CAMPUS ORGANIZATIONS: The Student Activities office provides a wide array of clubs and organizations. Whether it’s joining a club like Crusader Cheerleading or Carey Connections or finding a leadership role in the Student Government Organization, Student Activities can meet almost any interest. INTRAMURALS: Students who have a competitive side and like being part of a team can find their place in intramural sports. From biking or running to mini golf, the program has a wide variety of sports choices for students. COMMUNITY: Residence Life offers student leadership opportunities such as resident assistant or resident director. In Hattiesburg, the luncheon is a tradition almost 30 years old co-hosted by the Area Development Partnership. The Tradition campus held its inaugural luncheon in 2019, co-hosted by the Gulf Coast Business Council.

THE WINTERS SCHOOL OF MUSIC’S VISION STATEMENT IS, “ONE GOAL … ONE PASSION.” OUR ONE GOAL IS EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION AND PERFORMANCE, AND OUR ONE PASSION IS JESUS IN BOTH WORSHIP AND SERVICE. In fall 2020, our enrollment showed a 40 percent growth over the last two years. raising for our new state-of-the-sound lab, Tuscan Studios. The need for instruction in the latest methods of technology has never been more important. This studio will be used to train students to thrive as leaders in church, school, and music industry technology settings.

OVER THE LAST TWO DECADES, WILLIAM CAREY UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS HAS GROWN FROM OFFERING SIX SPORTS TO A ROBUST 18 INTERCOLLEGIATE TEAMS, TWO JUNIOR VARSITY TEAMS, AND A CLUB TEAM. THE UNIVERSITY CURRENTLY HAS MORE THAN 330 STUDENT-ATHLETES. During this time, William Carey has emerged as one of the premier athletic programs in the National Association of Intercollege Athletics (NAIA) and the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC). The Crusaders are home to three NAIA National Champions – baseball in 1969, women’s soccer in 2018, and men’s indoor track and field in 2020. WCU has also produced many SSAC championship teams. Carey athletes also succeed in the classroom. More than 75 percent of all athletes earn their degrees. Athletes also complete 2,000 hours of community service projects each year.

Leaving a memorial for a loved one, friend, colleague or professor is a great way to give back to William Carey University. This may be accomplished in a variety of ways. Memorials may be made with unrestricted gifts, but are often associated with a specific scholarship or a naming opportunity for a building campaign. When you leave a memorial, you will receive credit for the donation for tax purposes, but the gift will be left in the name of the individual requested along with any naming recognition associated with the gift.

PLANNED GIFTS

As most donors carry their largest assets in the form of investments, life insurance, or their estate itself, any donor that wishes to dedicate a portion of these assets to the university will make a tremendous impact. These donations may be in the form of stock, bonds, real estate, retirement assets, life insurance, or other funds through a bequest or trust.

IN-KIND GIFTS

A unique but special way that alumni can contribute to William Carey University is by donating a gift in-kind. These gifts may widely vary depending on the circumstance, but have historically ranged anywhere from construction-related items for new buildings to paintings and furnishings for offices. Significant memorabilia and other Carey spirit items would also be included as an in-kind gift. On select occasions, in-kind gifts will be appraised for tangible value and taxdeductible purposes. Most often, though, these gifts are not assigned a value. If this is the case, the item may still be considered for tax deductible purposes, but we advise that any donors consult with their accountants on this matter as several factors play a part in the value that may be assessed for nonappraised items.
