WALLOON ~ A PLACE LIKE NO OTHER Submitted by Danny Fellin Membership Committee, Chairman Communications + Outreach Committee, Chairman
Walloon Summer is the fastest three months of the year. Once again, the lake proved to be the best place to spend a summer day, week or month. Did you know that Walloon residents come from 34 states and the District of Columbia? That is truly amazing considering all the options available to families across the country. Families come from all corners and parts of the country; California, Washington, Alaska, Florida, Texas, South Carolina and even Maine. A lot of good things happened this past year and more are on the way in 2019, here are a few from 2018:
2018 Expanded social media presence to keep everyone connected to Walloon all year long In addition to your Wallooner, you can now stay informed on a daily basis through our two social media platforms - Facebook and Instagram. It’s the best way to stay current on the latest Walloon happenings wherever you are. Facebook delivers the latest news and happenings in and around the lake as well as allows you to connect directly with the WLA staff for questions or any help you may need. Instagram communicates through pictures, showing you the beauty of Walloon throughout the year. Please access our social media platforms to stay connected all year long. The social media handles are Facebook (Walloon Lake Association); Instagram (Walloon Forever).
Attacking and reducing enemy #1 – swimmer’s itch This past summer the Walloon Lake Association entered into a partnership with Freshwater Solutions that surveyed every mile of the Walloon Lake shoreline throughout the season. Their survey and data collection process will help inform future swimmer’s itch reduction methods including the trapping and relocating of Mergansers.
Keeping Walloon as beautiful as possible The Conservancy acquired a new preserve boasting approximately 450 feet of lake frontage off M-75 and over 3 acres of woodlands near Jensen Road. 75 families contributed to secure the necessary funds to acquire that parcel of land that will be known as the Norcross Family Preserve. This is just another example of the strong commitment our residents have to the lake. The Conservancy thanks everyone for their support.
Coming home to Walloon The Walloon Lake Association (WLA) and the Walloon Lake Trust and Conservancy (WLTC) office is now next to the Talcott building and just a few steps from the General Store in the village. The office moved from Petoskey this spring to make it easier to serve you. Please don’t hesitate to stop in to say hello or have any questions answered. Congressman Jack Bergman took part in the ribbon cutting during the Open House in late May. The office is open from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM Monday through Friday. continued on page 2
