When you give to McLaren Home Care & Hospice, you show kindness to Hospice patients and their families. Your generous support allows patients to experience comfort, compassion, and dignity during their final days. Thank you for giving dignity to so many.

Why We Need Your Help Hospice care is costly, and we happily serve patients with all types of insurance, as well as those without insurance. This means that our operating costs are well above the reimbursement amount from Medicare and other insurance companies.

Without gifts from donors, we would not be able to cover the costs of providing our full range of Hospice services and maintaining our Hospice houses.

Your gifts help bridge the gap in funding and keep our services available for all those who need them.

Here’s how you can help today: • Give $164 to pay for the cost of an overnight stay for one patient • Give a monthly recurring gift to cover patient care costs

Donors Make the Difference PROFILE: Lucille Hume Several days a week, Sharon Smith stops by the Cheboygan Hospice House to visit her good friend, Lucille Hume. The two met years ago, when Lucille’s daughter brought her to Sharon’s salon for a haircut.

“Since then, we just hit it off and became best friends,” said Sharon, who sometimes brings her curling iron and hairspray with her on visits so that she can fix Lucille’s hair.

The Hospice House offers a private bedroom, bathroom, and sitting area for Lucille, as well as around the clock care. “It is so wonderful for her to have this place to stay,” said Sharon. “I’m glad that we didn't have to worry about her falling on the ice or snow this past winter,” she added.

Hospice house workers and volunteers also provide three meals a day for Lucille and other residents. The home is comfortable and well-equipped for residents in need of ongoing support. With a full kitchen, a living room, prayer room, and solarium, the Hospice House offers multiple spots for families and friends to visit their loved ones.

Lucille is grateful to be here as well; she says she is glad that she has regular connections with others. In addition to being a resident here, Lucille is also a supporter of Hospice. She has given the gift of her home to Hospice (read more on Page 4). Lucille said she wanted to give so that others in the community could spend their final days with support from professional, compassionate caregivers either in their own homes or at a hospice house.

“So many people are alone, without children or family or even friends to visit them or help them. I wanted to give to Hospice so that no one would have to be alone in their final days,” - Lucille Hume, Hospice Patient and Legacy Donor Today, Sharon and Lucille chat just like old friends do.

Sharon curls and styles Lucille’s hair. Nurses and support staff are available to administer needed medications, assist with personal care, and provide a helping hand and listening ear whenever needed. It’s the type of personal, kind, and dignified care that Lucille wants to give to others, and it’s the type of care that others, through their gifts, have made possible for her.

Leaving a Legacy: Many Ways to Give Cheboygan county resident, Lucille Hume, wanted to contribute to the McLaren Home Care & Hospice Cheboygan Hospice House. Instead of writing a check, she transferred ownership of her home, retaining the right to live there while also helping future hospice patients and families. Her gift is called a retained life estate, a planned gift in which a donor can transfer ownership of a house to a nonprofit organization and receive a significant tax deduction, but continue to live in the house if they choose.

Supporting McLaren Home Care & Hospice with a retained life estate gift was the right choice for Lucille. There are other ways

to support McLaren Home Care & Hospice programs and services in northern Michigan, including bequests, beneficiary designations, and charitable remainder trusts. Each way of giving has advantages, including significant tax savings or deductions.
