A LETTER FROM OUR BOARD CHAIR

BUILDING FUNDS FOR THE COMMUNITY Dear Friends, This year marks the Mackinac Island Community Foundation’s 32nd year of philanthropy on the Island, and I am proud to report that one of our most important strategic goals is now a reality.

For several years, our strategic plan has called for growing our unrestricted funds — the flexible dollars that let nonprofits address the needs they know best, not just the priorities we set for them.

In the spring of 2024, we had $60,972 available for our competitive, bi-yearly grantmaking. Today, thanks to our Funds for the Community campaign, that number has grown to $145,607 in unrestricted funds, including $54,471 in additional unrestricted grantmaking made possible through fund repurposing, new funds, and major gifts.

That growth matters because unrestricted dollars go further. They let the nonprofits serving our Island carry out their own strategic plans, respond to needs as they arise, and build toward the future on their own terms. Guided by our 2023 community needs assessment, we have focused this support on the four priorities Islanders told us matter most: wellbeing, capacity building, culture, and vibrant island life.

None of this happens without a community that believes in giving back. I want to thank our board of trustees — Richard Linn, Jim Murray, Margaret Doud, Lorna Straus, Brenda Bunker, Kate Kaboski, Marta Olson, Phil Porter, Brad Chambers, Jane Young, and Carol Rearick — for the time, care, and judgment they bring to this work.

And I want to thank you: our donors, our partners, and our neighbors, whose generosity makes the Funds for the Community campaign possible.

FOUR PROGRAMS ONE COMMUNITY Fostering a thriving, inclusive community year-round—for seasonal workers, year-round residents, families, and everyone in between.

The Mackinac Island Community Foundation’s Vibrant Island Life priority has a clear and purposeful goal: to foster a thriving, inclusive community year-round—one that supports and attracts families and residents, creates social opportunities for isolated individuals, and nurtures happy, healthy students and workers.

I feel like Mackinac Connect is creating a bridge for employees to experience that more.”

It is a vision of an Island that does not go quiet when the crowds thin, and does not leave anyone behind when the season shifts. In 2025, four Island organizations put that vision into practice. Each one approaches communitybuilding differently—through weekly events, shared meals, cultural celebrations, and winter wellness—but all four are working toward the same overarching idea: that belonging, on Mackinac Island, should be available to everyone.

Mackinac Connect anchors the summer season with free

The City of Mackinac Island’s Recreation Department opens

the door even earlier, welcoming workers each May with an Employee Meet and Greet at Great Turtle Park, free barre classes and keeping residents active and connected through winter recreation programming.

The Mackinac Arts Council’s International Employee Night brings a spirit of celebration to the Vibrant Island Life theme, honoring the diverse cultural backgrounds Island workers carry with them and turning that diversity into a shared source of Island pride.

And at Ste. Anne’s Catholic Church, free Wednesday employee dinners—made possible through food donations from local restaurants and volunteers—offer a standing weekly invitation to the entire workforce. In winter, that same hospitality extends through Meals on Snowmobiles, which delivers hot food directly to isolated year-round residents when leaving home is hardest.

GRANTMAKING IMPACT

INVESTING IN

HEALTH, SAFETY & QUALITY OF LIFE When the Community Foundation asked islanders in 2023 what mattered most to a healthy Mackinac Island, the answers were direct. Nearly one in five who needed mental health care couldn’t find it on the Island, and responsive emergency medical care ranked as the single most important measure of a successful healthcare system. The assessment made clear that MICF should prioritize emergency medical care and expand mental health access and services on the Island — and those findings still guide how the Foundation directs its health and safety grantmaking today.

Emergency response on Mackinac Island depends on equipment built for island winters.

A grant of nearly $12,000 helped Cheboygan Life Support Systems/MI EMS acquire a fluid warmer that keeps IV fluids at safe temperatures during cold-weather medical transports — a small piece of equipment with an outsized impact when minutes and degrees matter.

Rehabilitation Fund: Supports Island Therapist Services, helping residents access mental health therapy and counseling without leaving the Island.

Wellbeing reaches beyond medical care, too.

A $10,000 grant supported the Great Lakes Recovery Center’s new Women’s Recovery House, extending substance-use treatment to the wider region, and a $4,500 grant helped Ste. Anne’s Catholic Church provide winter meals and companionship to elderly and disabled residents — addressing the isolation that can come with island winters.

In 2025, that focus turned into real support. A $29,850 grant equipped the Mackinac Island Medical Center with a forensic and medical documentation camera, while a companion grant of $16,426 created Island Therapist Services — bringing mental health care closer to home for residents who would otherwise travel off-island for treatment.

None of this happens without dedicated giving. Six named funds carried this work in 2025 (see box). Together, they reflect what islanders asked for directly: responsive emergency care, expanded access to physical and mental health services, and support for the neighbors, seasonal workers, and elders who keep Mackinac Island healthy and whole.

THE FUNDS BEHIND THE WORK These named funds made 2025’s health, safety, and wellbeing grants possible: Alice and Harry Myron Memorial Fund: Supported EMS cold-weather medical equipment and Ste. Anne’s winter meal program for elderly and disabled residents.

Beaumont Fund: Funded the Medical Center’s documentation camera and Island Therapist Services, plus EMS coldweather equipment.

Island Community Needs Fund: Backed EMS cold-weather equipment and the Great Lakes Recovery Center’s Women’s Recovery House.

Health and Medical Care Fund: Co-funded the Medical Center’s documentation camera.

The Rehabilitation Fund: Supports Island Therapist Services, helping residents access physical therapy and rehabilitation care without leaving the Island.

Thanks to generous donors, these funds keep care, safety, and support close to home.

YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL

EMPOWERING FUTURE LEADERS The Youth Advisory Council is actively making an impact in the community, while exploring career opportunity and developing leadership skills.

Emma Duke YAC Member In October 2025, the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) visited the Marine Trade Institute in Cedarville, Michigan to learn about the trade school and post-secondary opportunities.

Students also enjoyed a hike along the Narnia Trail, allowing students to connect with nature while also building relationships with each other.

In April 2025, the YAC members visited St. Ignace to volunteer with Feeding America, a

nationwide hunger-relief organization. Volunteering with Feeding America allowed YAC members to develop a stronger sense of community responsibility while learning the importance of service, compassion, and giving back to others.

These experiences directly reflect YAC’s mission of empowering young people to become engaged community leaders. By supporting organizations such as the Marine Trade Institute and Feeding America, YAC helps address needs identified by local youth while encouraging students to explore future careers, develop leadership skills, and make a positive impact in their communities.

The Youth Advisory Council’s goal in 2025 was to grant

money to those programs that fulfill the Youth Needs’ Assessment, to be more visible in the community, and to make future generations have better access to better things.

One of their primary focuses outlined in their Needs’ Assessment is to explore different career and trade opportunities.

Students who achieve academic excellence are also awarded scholarships to further their education in college or trade school.

In 2025, MIPS graduating seniors, Mason McLean, Kizzie Soderquist, Madison Gamble, Vincent Davis, and Owen Morse were recipients of $89,937 in scholarship from the Mackinac Island Community Foundation.

TRUSTING THE FOUNDATION WITH

TOMORROW’S NEEDS During the 2024–2025 campaign, many generous donors took a deliberate step to deepen MICF’s capacity to respond to where the needs are greatest in Mackinac Island.

The Murray Family Fund, the Olivia Chambers and Mark Chambers Fund, and the Wohletz Family Fund were each repurposed — converted from a field-of-interest or donor-advised fund into unrestricted giving — while the Anne and John Gault Fund for the Community, the Mary Ann and Bob Gale Fund for the Community, the David and Janet Bell Fund for the Community, the Mark, Amy and Zoe

Fleischer Fund for the Community, and the Mackinac Island Community Fund were newly created as Funds for the Community.

The difference matters. A fieldof-interest fund is locked to one cause; a donor-advised fund still requires the donor’s direction. An unrestricted Fund for the Community carries neither restriction — it grants alongside the Island Community Needs Fund, with only the earned interest distributed and the principal preserved in perpetuity, giving MICF’s board the flexibility to direct dollars toward the Island’s needs as they evolve.

Alongside these named funds, Gwen and Gary Gilmer made a generous gift directly to the Island Community Needs Fund itself, strengthening the Foundation’s largest pool of unrestricted, community-driven dollars.

Together, these gifts now stand among the Foundation’s growing pool of unrestricted giving — each one a vote of confidence that the Foundation’s judgment, not a fixed mandate, is what will keep Mackinac Island healthy, safe, and whole for seasons to come.

TAX-SMART & PLANNED GIVING OPTIONS Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from Your IRA If you are age 70½ or older, you may transfer up to $108,000 per year (2025 limit) directly from your IRA to a qualified charity — tax-free. A QCD satisfies all or part of your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) and is excluded from your taxable income, even if you do not itemize deductions.

To make a QCD, contact your IRA custodian and request Mackinac Island Community Foundation (MICF). Please notify us so we can ensure proper acknowledgment. Important: QCDs cannot be directed to a donor-advised fund — they must go directly to the charity.

Gifts of Stock or Appreciated Securities Donating appreciated stocks, bonds, or mutual funds held for more than one year can be one of the most tax-efficient ways to give. Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) A donor-advised fund is a charitable giving account that allows you to make a contribution, receive an immediate tax deduction, and recommend grants to organizations you care about over time. If you have a DAF with Vanguard Charitable, Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable, or another sponsoring organization, recommend a grant to us using our name Mackinac Island Community Foundation (MICF). Call to request of EIN. Your local community foundation can also help you establish a DAF. Include MICF in Your Estate One of the most meaningful gifts you can make is to remember the Mackinac Island Community Foundation (MICF) in your will, trust, or estate plan. A bequest costs you nothing during your lifetime and creates a lasting legacy in our community.

Common ways to make an estate gift include: • Bequest in your will or living trust — leave a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or the remainder after other bequests are fulfilled.
