AN EVENING WITH JUDY COLLINS

Judy Collins has inspired audiences with sublime vocals, boldly vulnerable songwriting, personal life triumphs, and a firm commitment to social activism.

The award-winning singer-songwriter is esteemed for her imaginative interpretations of traditional and contemporary folk standards and her own poetically poignant original compositions. Her stunning rendition of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” from her landmark 1967 album, Wildflowers, has been entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Judy’s dreamy and sweetly intimate version of “Send in the Clowns,” a ballad written by Stephen Sondheim for the Broadway musical A Little Night Music, won “Song of the Year” at the 1975 Grammy Awards. She’s garnered several top-ten hits, gold- and platinum-selling albums. Recently, contemporary and classic artists such as Rufus Wainwright, Shawn Colvin, Dolly Parton, Joan Baez, and Leonard Cohen honored her legacy with the album Born to the Breed: A Tribute to Judy Collins.

Judy Collins, now 80, is as creatively vigorous as ever, writing, touring worldwide, and nurturing fresh talent. Jorge Federico Osorio has been lauded throughout the world for his superb musicianship, powerful technique, vibrant imagination, and deep passion. He is the recipient of several international prizes and awards, including the prestigious Medalla Bellas Artes, the highest honor granted by Mexico’s National Institute of Fine Arts.

Osorio’s extensive career includes performing with the world’s leading symphony orchestras such as Chicago, Detroit, and Philadelphia, and in world-renowned locations such as Lincoln Center and throughout North, Central, and South America, Asia, and Europe. He has collaborated with numerous distinguished artists and conductors, like Yo-Yo Ma and Bernard Haitink. A prolific recording artist, Osorio has documented a wide variety of repertoire including concertos and other works. Osorio attended the conservatories of Mexico, Paris, and Moscow and resides in the Chicagoland area, where he serves on the faculty at Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts.

Mendelsohn’s overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of his loveliest and most enduring works, though rarely performed in conjunction with the play it was designed to accompany. The concert also includes Mendelsohn’s Symphony No. 3 and the Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 4.

Since 2001, the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra has been Northern Michigan’s ambassadors for classical chamber music. The Children of the World in Harmony Festival brings children and youth from around the world to sing and dance in a variety of settings throughout Northern Michigan, culminating in this gala concert. He has been featured on recordings, directed award-winning jazz ensembles, and is the author of the book that serves as the textbook for the two-year jazz improvisation curriculum at the Interlochen Arts Academy.

JEREMY ALLEN is a Grammy-nominated bassist who has performed with such jazz luminaries as Fred Hersch, Mike Stern, David Liebman, Kenny Wheeler, Bob Brookmeyer, and George Garzone. DownBeat Magazine describes his talent as “worthy of Jaco Pastorius.”

SEAN DOBBINS is an award-winning drummer whose sound can best be described as hard-driving, solid rhythm with refreshing melodic sensibility. So far in his career, he has had the opportunity to collaborate with Johnny Basset, Benny Golson, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Frank Morgan, George Cables, Larry Willis, Claude Black, Johnny O’Neal, Jon Hendricks, and a host of other great musicians.

LUKE GILLESPIE is an award-winning active performer of jazz and classical piano, author, and recording artist. Mitch Albom is an internationally renowned author, journalist, screenwriter, playwright, radio and TV broadcaster and philanthropist.

A longtime panelist on ESPN’s “The Sports Reporters” and co-host of its podcast, Albom has also penned films, plays, and a musical. For more than a decade, he was named top sports columnist in the nation by the Sports Editors of America, the highest honor in his field. In 2006, he founded S.A.Y. Detroit, an umbrella organization that operates nine charities dedicated to improving lives of the neediest Detroiters.

He also runs an orphanage in Port Au Prince, Haiti, the Have Faith Haiti Mission.

Dave Barry has been a professional humorist ever since he discovered that professional humor was a lot easier than working.

For many years he wrote a column that appeared in over 500 newspapers. Barry won the Pulitzer Prize for commentary and has written more than 30 books, including the novels Big Trouble, Lunatics, Tricky Business and, most recently, Insane City.

Under the direction of Lieutenant Commander Adam R. Williamson, The United States Coast Guard Band is the premier band representing the United States Coast Guard and the Department of Homeland Security. The 55-member ensemble is based at the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. In addition to performing concert tours around the nation, the Band has also played in the former Soviet Union, Canada, England, Japan and Taiwan. In 2008, the Coast Guard Band became the first premier American military band to perform a concert tour of Japan. Concerts include a broad spectrum of music, from wind ensemble classics to swinging jazz charts.

During his time in office, Dallas experienced tremendous economic growth.

Since winning First Prize at the 2016 Menuhin International Junior Violin Competition in London at the age of 12, Yesong Sophie Lee has played to rave reviews and enthusiastic audiences in both the United States and Europe. She has soloed with numerous orchestras including the London Philharmonia Orchestra, Berlin’s Konzerthaus Orchestra, the Suisse Romande, the Seattle Symphony, and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Her Detroit Symphony debut took place on the Center’s stage at the Grand Opening Gala in July 2018. She also performed Bach’s Double Concerto with Joshua Bell and the Richmond Symphony and gave a concert tour of the UK, where she played for Prince Charles. Ms. Lee began studying the violin at age 4 and her early achievements include winning First Prize at age 11 in the 2015 Music Teachers National Association Competition and making her solo debut with the Seattle Symphony at age 8.
