In 1994 in his hometown of Portland, Oregon, Thomas Lauderdale was working in politics, with the intention of eventually running for office. Like other eager politicians-in-training, he went to every political fund-raiser under the sun… but was dismayed to find the music at these events underwhelming, lackluster, loud and un-neighborly. Drawing inspiration from music from all over the world – crossing genres of classical, jazz and old-fashioned pop – and hoping to appeal to conservatives and liberals alike, he founded the “little orchestra” Pink Martini in 1994. The band was formed to provide more beautiful and inclusive musical soundtracks for political fund-raisers for causes such as civil rights, affordable housing, cleaning up the Willamette River, funding for libraries, public broadcasting, education and parks.

One year later, Lauderdale called China Forbes, a Harvard classmate who was living in New York City, and asked her to join Pink Martini. They began to write songs together.

Their first song - “Sympathique” (Je ne veus pas travailler) - became an overnight sensation in France, was nominated for “Song of the Year” at France’s Victoires de la Musique Awards, and to this day remains a mantra (“Je ne veux pas travailler” or “I don’t want to work”) for striking French workers. Says Lauderdale,

Featuring a dozen musicians, Pink Martini performs its multilingual repertoire in over 25 languages on concert stages and with symphony orchestras throughout Europe, Asia, Greece, Turkey, the Middle East, Northern Africa, Australia, New Zealand, South America and North America. Pink Martini made its European debut at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997 and its orchestral debut with the Oregon Symphony in 1998 under the direction of Norman Leyden. Since then, the band has gone on to play with more than 70 orchestras around the world, including multiple engagements with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, the Boston Pops, the National Symphony at the Kennedy Center, the San Francisco Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Sydney Symphony at the Sydney Opera House, and the BBC Concert Orchestra at Royal Albert Hall in London.

With soloists Dylana Jenson & David Lockington The Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra and Chorus, conducted by Music Director Dr. Libor Ondras, are excited to present an evening of the world’s greatest music. Featured performances will include “Bartered Bride Overture” by Smetana, “Make Our Garden Grow” from Candide by Bernstein, “The Promise of Living” from the Tenderland by Copland, and Brahms’ “Concerto for Violin, Cello, and Orchestra Op. 102.” Soloists will be Dylana Jenson, violin, and David Lockington, cello.

The Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra has completed 16 seasons as the only professional orchestra in Michigan north of the 45th parallel. Since 2001, GLCO has offered to its audiences over 150 performances, including chamber music series concerts, educational concerts and outreach projects in local schools.

DYLANA JENSON started playing violin at the age of two and a half.

After her triumphant success at the International Tchaikovsky Competition, where she became the youngest and first American woman to win the Silver Medal at the age of 17, she made a Carnegie Hall debut playing the Sibelius Concerto with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra, which launched her outstanding career as a concert violinist. Dylana has since performed with most major orchestras in the United States, offered recitals, and made recordings with orchestras in Europe, Australia, Japan and Latin America

DAVID LOCKINGTON, received his masters in cello performance from Yale University and served as assistant principal cellist of the Denver Symphony Orchestra before turning to conducting full time. He was the conductor of the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra for 14 years, and was named Music Director Laureate on his departure. He is now the Music Director of the Pasadena Symphony and the Modesto Symphony, but he has never stopped playing the cello. Recently, he performed Philip Sawyer’s Cello Concerto with the Pasadena Symphony under the baton of Nicholas McGegan.

Ms. Jenson and Mr. Lockington performed Brahms’ concerto together with the Grand Rapids Symphony and the Modesto Symphony.

She’s had five #1 singles, sold millions of records, won the Academy of Country Music’s Top Female Vocalist Award and claimed a Country Music Association trophy for her signature song, “Born To Fly.” It’s tough to imagine many accomplishments Sara Evans hasn’t already checked off her bucket list.

And yet, with the release of her eighth studio album, Words, demonstrates that she’s still willing to leap into the unknown, taking greater control of her career and calling the shots in a way that’s unusual in country music – particularly unusual for a woman in the genre.

Jeb Bush was the 43rd governor of the state of Florida, serving from 1999 through 2006.

He was the third Republican elected to the state’s highest office and the only Republican in the state’s history to be reelected. Jeb Bush was a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in the 2016 election cycle. Prior to his run for President and his two terms as Florida’s governor, Mr. Bush built a lifelong career as a successful businessman and entrepreneur, with a focus on real estate, investment and consulting.

He is the author of three books focused on public policy. Among his many philanthropic endeavors, Governor Bush is the founder and chairman of the Foundation for Excellence in Education, a national 501(c)3 education reform organization with a focus on helping build an American education system that equips every child to achieve his or her God-given potential. He and his wife, Columba, live in Miami and have three grown children and four grandchildren. Governor Bush is the son of President George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush.

JAKE ALLEN He moves around the acoustic guitar like he’s been holding it for a lifetime, gliding from end to end and producing sounds that you’d normally expect from a full band.

Although most audiences are introduced to Jake Allen through the spectacle of his solo acoustic performances, the scope of Allen’s artistry runs much deeper.

At age five, Allen began exploring synthesizers and recording music in his father’s Northern Michigan studio. By fourteen, he had become proficient with a variety of instruments and solidified his commitment to a life of producing and performing music.

Allen has since gone on to produce several acclaimed solo records, playing every instrument himself, while tastefully complementing his smooth to soaring voice. In addition to drums, keyboards, harp and other various instruments, Jake often stresses his belief in using the studio itself as a key instrument in creating his massive productions and concept albums. His deep and detailed records lend themselves to the fleeting practice of sitting down and really listening to a record from start to finish.

Throughout Michigan, the name Drew Hale is synonymous with powerful vocals, compelling lyrics, and haunting melodies. In 2016, Drew won the national Country Showdown competition held at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, earning him the title Best New Act in Country Music. Most recently, The Drew Hale Band won the Detroit Regional round of 93.1 NashFM’s Nash Next contest.

Influenced by Texas roots and artists such as Reckless Kelly and Eric Church, the Drew Hale Band’s music pays homage to the red dirt country and southern rock scenes, as well as paints a picture of their love for the people and culture of Michigan, where the band calls home. Matthew Morrison is a versatile actor who is recognized for his work on-stage and on-screen. He has been nominated for Tony, Emmy and Golden Globe Awards.

Most probably recognize him from Fox’s musical comedy series “Glee” where he starred as Mr. Schuester, that wrapped its final season in 2015.

In addition to his role on “Glee,” Morrison performed as a guest star on the CBS hit show “The Good Wife,” where he played the role of U.S. Attorney, Conor Fox, through the series finale.

Morrison studied musical theater, vocal performance and dance at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. He made his debut on Broadway in “Footloose” but his big break came when he was cast as heartthrob Link Larkin in the hit “Hairspray.”

Morrison was later nominated for a Tony Award for his role in “The Light in the Piazza.”

He also starred in the Tony-winning revival of “South Pacific” at Lincoln Center Theater in New York. Morrison’s most recent Broadway credit is starring as “J.M Barrie” in the musical “Finding Neverland.”

Morrison is also a successful recording artist, releasing a self-titled debut album through Mercury Records in 2011 that featured an A-List lineup of artists such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Sir Elton John. His latest release, “Where It All Began,” is a Broadway standard record produced by the legendary Phil Ramone.

THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO PRESENTED BY THE BAY VIEW MUSIC FESTIVAL

A fast-paced farce filled with glorious music, The Marriage of Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro) is considered to be the greatest comic opera ever written. This production is fully-staged, costumed, accompanied by an orchestra and sung in Italian.

As the day of Figaro and Susanna’s wedding arrives, it becomes clear that their master, Count Almaviva, is hell-bent on seducing Susanna before the ceremony can take place.

Susanna and Figaro conspire with the forsaken Countess to outwit her husband and teach him a lesson in fidelity. But when the teenage Cherubino involves himself in their plans, relationships become severely strained through a series of ever-more confusing twists and turns.

The Bay View Music Festival hosts over 120 auditioned, collegiate musicians each summer as a vital component of the Association’s summer programming and conservatory, one of the oldest of its kind in the country.

Viewed by more than 22 million people in over 23,000 performances worldwide, Buddy opened in London’s West End in 1989 and has been seen on Broadway, throughout the U.S. and Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Japan, South Africa, and Singapore, winning numerous awards along the way. Tony Award Nominee, Director Marcia Milgrom Dodge, has adapted BUDDY- THE BUDDY HOLLY MUSICAL for seven Performer/Musicians who take us on the journey of Buddy Holly’s rise to rock ‘n’ roll infamy. This production was produced especially for the opening of the Great Lakes Center for the Arts.

The action takes place in Lubbock, Texas; Clovis, New Mexico; New York; and Clear Lake, Iowa between January 1956 and February 1959. Starting out as a Country and Western singer in Lubbock, Buddy and his two friends, Joe and Jerry, form “The Crickets.” With the support of a local radio DJ, ‘Hipockets’ Duncan, they begin to carve out a career in music. After an inauspicious start at Decca Records in Nashville, Buddy and The Crickets sign a contract with up-and-coming innovative record producer, Norman Petty. Within hours of meeting, they start to record Buddy’s biggest hit, “That’ll Be the Day.” Buddy’s final performance at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, with Ritchie Valens (“La Bamba”) and the ‘Big Bopper’ J.P. Richardson (“Chantilly Lace”) is recreated. After the concert, Buddy breaks his promise to his pregnant wife not to fly as he and the two headliners board a small plane and fly off into the night for Moorhead, Minnesota, only to crash into a field.

The tragedy snatches away the lives of three dynamic musical talents – Buddy Holly (22), Ritchie Valens (17), and the Big Bopper (28) – and is often referred to as “the day the music died.”

With more than 20 years as a stand-up comedian, Tom Papa is one of the top comedic voices in the country finding success in film, TV, radio and podcasts as well as on the live stage.

Most recently, Tom released his first book, Your Dad Stole My Rake And Other Family Dilemmas, for anyone who has a family, grew up in a family, or has spent time with another human being. Tom also recently signed on as Head Writer and regular performer for the legendary radio show, “Live From Here.” Tom is featured on the show in his own segment, “Out In America with Tom Papa,” heard regularly by the 2.6 million fans of the weekly radio show.

A regular on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Conan, Tom’s third hour-long stand-up special, “Human Mule,” premiered on Amazon and Hulu on March 9. Tom’s first two critically acclaimed hour-long specials were directed by Rob Zombie. “Tom Papa: Freaked Out” (2013) is streaming on Amazon and Hulu and is available as a download and “Tom Papa Live in New York City” (2011) is streaming on Netflix and is available as a download.

Tom is host of the hit podcast and SiriusXM show, “Come to Papa,” a weekly, hour-long show featuring Tom exploring the funny side of life, occasionally with guests like Mel Brooks, Ray Romano, Carl Reiner and Jerry Seinfeld.

When not touring the country, Tom lives in Los Angeles with his wife and family.
