Moving into this new season from the Premiere Summer Season, we are delighted to continue to offer diverse and world-class events to Northern Michigan at affordable ticket pricing. This season we launch our Cinema Series on our 45-foot cinema screen with a classic trilogy, The Lord of the Rings. We welcome Senator George Mitchell to the area as we continue our speaker series of intellectual dialogue. Black Violin, Elliot Wuu, and The Second City, along with other events this season, include an educational component that we are excited to share with area students, furthering the education pillar of our mission. Our holiday programming provides tradition and laughter with the Crooked Tree Arts Center’s Nutcracker Ballet, Dysfunctional Holiday Revue from The Second City, and the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra’s Handel’s Messiah. Singer, Showman, Songwriter, Musician…Frankie Moreno is all of these things and more.

As a child prodigy on the piano and a gifted multi-instrumentalist, Frankie was first introduced to American audiences at the age of ten with his debut on CBS’s “Star Search.” Since then, named “Las Vegas Headliner of the Year” three times, Frankie has been wowing audiences from coast-to-coast performing his own brand of piano-pounding Rock n’ Roll.

Frankie’s performance on ABC’s “Dancing With The Stars” brought him into America’s living rooms again performing his self-penned hit “Tangerine Honey.” He has continued with more television appearances, magazine covers and sold-out concerts including Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center and The Hollywood Bowl. The recipient of an Emmy Nomination for his national TV special “Songs at Home,” Frankie is now starring in his own nationwide special for PBS titled “Frankie Moreno In Concert.”

Reaching one million record sales worldwide, Frankie has been collaborating on new music with producer, engineer, and guitar legend Pat Thrall (Katy Perry, Christina Aguilera, Beyoncé, Justin Bieber). “Frankie is one of the most naturally gifted musicians I’ve ever worked with. We both share the same vision for his music, so it’s a fun and exciting process,” says Pat. Frankie’s collaboration for Sony Records with world-renowned violinist, Joshua Bell, reached #1 on the Billboard charts in two separate categories. Other artists included on this album were Sting, Josh Groban, Chris Botti, Kristin Chenoweth, and Regina Spektor. Together they filmed “Great Performances: Live at Lincoln Center” for PBS. Frankie and Joshua have since recorded another album together, which hit the Top Ten on the Billboard charts, featuring Placido Domingo, Gloria Estefan, Allison Krauss, Chick Corea, and many more.

Frankie toured the U.S. with Grammy-nominated country artist Billy Currington and country superstars Sugarland. Frankie has also joined multi-platinum artists Air Supply for their world tour as musical director, and wrote their recent radio single “Dance with Me,” reaching #7 on the Top 40 Billboard charts.

In addition to touring the world from Paris to Oslo, and Tokyo to Seoul, Frankie is writing and producing music for other artists, and has established Angel Town Spirits, a signature line of premium wines and liquor. The line is distributed nationally, and his wines have become top sellers regionally.

Frankie Moreno continues to command audiences with his highly-contagious music and playful stage antics. His songs are cleverly crafted and his musicianship is virtuoso. He is unquestionably a unique artist and an all-around talent who puts his heart and soul into his music.

SPEAKER SERIES

Senator George Mitchell has had a long and distinguished career. He served for several years as Chairman of DLA Piper, now Chairman Emeritus. Before that he served as a federal judge; as Majority Leader of the United States Senate; as Chairman of peace negotiations in Northern Ireland which resulted in an agreement that ended a historic conflict; and most recently as U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East. In 2008, Time Magazine described him as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Senator Mitchell is the author of five books. His most recent books are a memoir entitled The Negotiator: Reflections on an American Life, published in May 2015 and A Path To Peace, published in November 2016.

Black Violin is led by classically-trained string players Wil B. (viola) and Kev Marcus (violin), and joined onstage by DJ SPS and drummer Nat Stokes. The band uses their unique blend of classical and hip-hop music to overcome stereotypes while encouraging people of all ages, races, and economic backgrounds to join together to break down cultural barriers. In the past 12 months, the band has performed for over 100,000 students in the U.S. and Europe, and has partnered with Yamaha EDU and NAMM (National Association of Music Manufactures) to continue supporting music education.

Black Violin, alongside artists such as Yo-Yo Ma and Elton John, recently joined with Turnaround Arts to bring arts education to struggling schools in underserved communities. Turnaround Arts is a program of the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts and the President’s Committee. In addition, Black Violin has composed for a major FOX Television original, and has been featured by ESPN as the official artist of the 2017 US Open (tennis) and 2016 & 2017 Heisman Trophy Award ceremonies. They have been featured on The Tonight Show, Ellen, The Wendy William’s Show, NPR, and more.

The group has collaborated professionally or performed with multiple well-known artists including Kanye West, Aerosmith, Tom Petty, Wu-Tang Clan, Wyclef Jean and Alicia Keys.

Their most recent album release, Stereotypes, hit #1 on Billboard’s Classical Crossover chart and #4 on Billboard’s R&B Chart.

Praised for his “power, speed and finesse of artists twice his age” (Tribune Star), 18-year-old Elliot Wuu is a rising star in becoming an exceptional young artist. First Prize winner in the 2015 Hilton Head International Piano Competition for Young Artists and a Young Scholar alumnus of the Lang Lang International Music Foundation, Wuu has captured audiences with colorful tones, sensitive musicality and emotional depth in his music. Wuu was recently named a 2018 Gilmore Young Artist, one of the most prestigious awards bestowed every two years to two young pianists up to 22 years old.

In recent years, Wuu has won numerous state, national and international competitions and performed across the globe. In addition to his success at Hilton Head, in 2015 Wuu won Second Prize and special Schubert Prize in the International e-Piano Junior Competition; Third Prize and special Mozart Prize in the Cleveland International Piano Competition for the Young Artists; Second Prize and the Best Performance award of a composition by Russian Composers in the Bösendorfer and Yamaha USASU International Piano Competition. Wuu has been named the 2016-2021 MTAC Young Artist Guild (YAG) member, the highest honor awarded to California music students.

Wuu was also the winner of the 2017 National YoungArts Competition.

Wuu has performed in major venues in the U.S., France, Italy, Germany, United Kingdom, Poland, Romania and China. In NYC, Wuu performed at the United Nations Headquarters in the presence of Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, at the WQXR Greene Space, and at Carnegie Hall for the Grammy’s Salute to Classical Music concert. His performance was aired on WQXR. Wuu was also featured in the NPR’s From the Top program broadcasted nationwide. Other notable venues include Holywell Music Room where Haydn performed, Foundation Louis Vuitton in Paris, and the Ravinia Festival.

After making his debut at age 16 with the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra performing Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Wuu has appeared with the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Parnassus, and Arad State Philharmonic in Romania, among many others.

In addition to performing, Wuu has been inspired by many great international musicians and artists. Wuu has worked with such artists as Dame Fanny Waterman, Leon Fleisher, Gary Graffman, and Ruth Slenczynska in master classes.

Born in September 1999 in Fremont, CA, Wuu began piano studies at the age of six.

Throughout his high school years, Wuu was a music scholarship student at the San Francisco Conservatory Pre-College, studying piano with Yoshikazu Nagai, as well as the Valley Christian High School Conservatory of the Arts. His previous teachers include Jed Galant and Rose Chen. Wuu is currently studying piano performance at The Juilliard School under the tutelage of Robert McDonald.

They represent Northern Michigan from the Soo to Gaylord, encompassing many area towns. Crooked Tree Arts Center presented the Chorale the 2007 Eddi Award for “Arts and Cultural Organizations for the benefit of the citizens of Charlevoix and Emmet Counties.” The Chorale awards annual Vocal Music Scholarships to area residents who want to improve their singing.

Led by Julie Pierpont, the Chorale’s fall performance includes holiday favorites and selections from Broadway to the classics. They are very grateful for the support of local sponsors. The Northern Michigan Chorale truly knows the meaning of the song … “We’ve Only Just Begun.”

Beginning its 18th season, the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra is Northern Michigan’s champion of classical chamber music.

The orchestra is known for its powerful musical performances, educational outreach programs, collaborations with community partners, and a passion and commitment to Northern Michigan.

As a community-supported orchestra, generous gifts and sponsorships from individuals and businesses empower our continued success and growth.

Gifted conductor and Music Director, Libor Ondras, has been with the GLCO since 2014.

Whether leading the orchestra with his baton or joining the orchestra with his viola, Dr. Ondras inspires both orchestra and audiences alike. GLCO’s performances highlight the most classic of traditional composers to the most innovative of today’s contemporaries.

With growing attendance and continual support from the community, the GLCO’s performance schedule includes Classical, Young People’s and Sunday Recital Series concerts, and collaborations with local organizations such as Castle Farms, Raven Hill, Bay Harbor Yacht Club and many more.

In 2017, the GLCO embarked on its first international tour, performing music by American composers in Vienna, Prague and Bratislava. The orchestra concert was broadcast in Europe, and concerts from our regular season can be heard on Interlochen Public Radio.
