The Great Lakes Center for the Arts is proud to announce the 2019 | 2020 Next Gen serieseducational programming for youth from across Northern Michigan—as it partners with area educators in providing world-class arts experiences that enrich the lives of young people. The Center presents a variety of productions that complement the school curriculum and enhance learning, as only the arts can do.

The Next Gen series includes matinées for schools as well as educational experiences tied to the Center’s Summer and Fall—Spring Season presented events, all provided at little or no charge to participating schools and students. The Next Gen Series is made possible, in part, through the Mansfield Family Foundation and the Robert Jensen Dau Family Foundation, as well from foundation grants and the State of Michigan.

Yes, Bob Saget has starred in many successful television shows, including two of the most family-friendly shows network TV has ever produced (Full House and America’s Funniest Home Videos) but he’s also an out of his mind stand-up comedian for over thirty years. From his 2014 Grammy-nominated stand-up special, “That’s What I’m Talkin’ About,” to his scene-stealing cameos in “Entourage,” and “The Aristocrats,” Saget always entertains as he embraces his dark side.

In January 2016, Saget completed a 9-week run on Broadway as Pastor Greg in the Tony nominated play, Hand To God, and his first book, Dirty Daddy, is a New York Times Best Seller. Most recently, Saget can be seen in the hit Netflix series, Fuller House, and he directed and starred in the 2019 independent film, Benjamin. Saget is also the host, writer and Executive Producer of the new ABC series, Videos After Dark, and his newest hour stand-up special, Zero To Sixty, is currently streaming on Amazon Prime.

The comedic style of this event is rated R-ish and intended for mature audiences.

In 1980, Melissa Manchester became the first recording artist in the history of the Academy Awards to have two nominated movie themes in a single year, “Through The Eyes Of Love” from Ice Castles and “I’ll Never Say Goodbye” from The Promise, and to perform them both on the Oscar telecast. Melissa starred in the national tours of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Music of the Night and Song and Dance, and created the role of Maddy, the title character’s mother, on the NBC hit TV series Blossom. Nominated for a Grammy in 1980 for “Don’t Cry Out Loud,” she won the Grammy Award for best female vocalist in 1982 singing “You Should Hear How She Talks About You.” Melissa has composed music for the animated features The Great Mouse Detective and Lady and the Tramp II, the sequel to the Disney classic. In addition to composing the scores for the musicals I Sent a Letter to My Love and Sweet Potato Queens, Melissa also co-wrote the radio mainstays “Midnight Blue,” “Come in from the Rain,” and “Whenever I Call You Friend.” Recently, Melissa celebrated her 45-year career with the release of her 21st album, The Fellas, a tribute to the iconic male singers who set the platinum standard for the music of the great American songbook.

This event is the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra’s season-opening concert and presents the world premiere of a newly commissioned work by composer David Lockington, entitled “The Violet Viola Concerto.” This piece was written for the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra and Music Director and violist, Libor Ondras, and was inspired by the birth of Lockington’s granddaughter, Violet. “Overture from II Signor Bruchino” by Rossini and “Variaciones Concertantes” by Ginastera will also be on the program.

OPERA SHOWCASE

Indiana University was recently ranked in the top ten in the world for performing arts institutions by QS World University Rankings.

For decades, the IU Jacobs School of Music has produced some of the finest opera singers in the country, such as Lawrence Brownlee and Jamie Barton, to name only two. The Center welcomes a group of vocalists from the Jacobs School of Music who will perform classical vocal selections from opera arias to art songs. Peter Yarrow’s talents as a creative artist— both with the legendary trio (Peter, Paul & Mary) and as a solo performer—are frequently directed at using music to convey a message of humanity and caring. His gift for songwriting has produced some of the most moving songs from Peter, Paul & Mary, including “Puff, the Magic Dragon,” “Day is Done,” “Light One Candle,” and “The Great Mandala.” As a member of the renowned musical trio, Yarrow has earned multiple gold and platinum albums, as well as numerous Grammys.

Over the years, many issues have moved Peter to commit his time and talent: equal rights, peace, the environment, gender equality, homelessness, hospice care, and education.

All have utilized his skills as both a performer and an organizer. Join the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra as they introduce Angels and Demons, an eerie-themed concert with music from Ravel, Schubert, and Caplet. Almost 200 years after Schubert wrote “Death and the Maiden,” it continues to be called one of the “pillars of the chamber music repertoire,” recounting Schubert’s impending death.

Ravel’s work, “Pavane for a Dead Infanta,” belies its actual inspiration: Far from being about death, the piece is not sad and mournful, but more in the realm of fantasy, and could be titled, “Pavane for a Princess from a Faraway Time.”

The Northern Michigan Chorale returns to the Center for its third concert series, “SING JOY!” Celebrating their 38th year, they perform exciting music featuring many carol arrangements of the renowned Robert Shaw.

The concert includes lively tunes, like Stephen Foster’s “Some Folks Love the Holidays,” and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s moving “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” Led by Julie Pierpont, the Northern Michigan Chorale received an Eddi Award for “best Arts and Cultural Organization for the benefit of the citizens of Charlevoix and Emmet Counties.” They offer vocal music scholarships each spring to area residents of all ages seeking to improve their singing.

Joining the Chorale is the popular and talented Little Traverse Youth Choir, under the direction of Kevin Wells. In 2018 they toured Ireland and in summer 2019 hosted an international choral festival with Voices Without Borders. Together the Chorale and Youth Choir bring 100 singers from all over Northern Michigan, uniting to create a rich and glorious blend of voices. Their versatile accompanists are Cynda Coleman and Amy Rhudy.

Get ready for a musical history trip! Move and groove back to the beginnings of rock ‘n’ roll with entertainer and songwriter Lance Lipinsky and his Chicago-based group The Lovers in Rock Baby Rock! Culling together revitalized sounds from the late 1940s to the mid-1960s, this ever-shuffling night features both obvious and slightly less common touchstones, including era-defining material from Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Bill Haley & The Comets, Chubby Checker, Ray Charles, Bo Diddley, The Dells, Ike Turner, and Jerry Lewis’ top tunes.

In an unforgettable live concert, Lipinsky delivers an explosive pumpin’ piano performance showcasing his influences of the 1950s and 60s in his original music. With driving Jerry Lee style piano rhythms and Elvis inspired swagger, he and The Lovers take on a modern evolution of a timeless throwback style in an all-its-own, swing-tastic, rockabilly stage show spectacular.

Let’s start at the very beginning (a very good place to start). This event is a screening of the classic Julie Andrews’ musical film in glorious, full-screen Technicolor, complete with subtitles so that the whole audience can sing along!

The fun-filled show starts with a vocal warm-up led by the evening’s host, who also takes the audience through their complimentary ‘magic moments fun pack’ containing various props to be used at strategic points throughout the film.

Then, of course, there is the famous fancy-dress competition in which everyone who has come in Sound of Music-inspired costume is invited onto the stage to show off their fantastic tailoring skills and take a chance to win prizes.

Attendees will also get a bag of props at the door to enhance this amazing experience!

Having started in the UK back in 1999, the Sing-Along Sound of Music show has now become a worldwide hit, playing to packed houses across the globe with over 10,000 performances in 11 different countries, including many of the world’s cities: New York, L.A., San Francisco, Toronto, Sydney, Melbourne, Dublin and Oslo, Amsterdam and Stockholm. It has even filled the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles – seven times!
