It is a distinct honor to welcome you to the 2018/2019 Fall - Spring Season on behalf of the Great Lakes Center for the Arts. We are delighted to continue to offer diverse and world-class events to Northern Michigan at affordable ticket pricing. Earlier this season, we launched our Cinema Series on our 45-foot cinema screen with monthly films that echo our mission.

We look forward to celebrating diversity in the arts with the Laureates of the Sphinx Competition and spending an evening in happy-tears laughing to the comedy of Capitol Steps. This Spring, we welcome regional arts organizations, some for the first time and others returning to Center stage, and prepare for the beloved, world-renowned Vienna Boys Choir.

Natalia Makarova’s production of this 19th-century classic ballet brings to life an exotic world of temple dancers and noble warriors. Marius Petipa’s fantasy, set in legendary India, tells the tale of a temple dancer and the prince who loves her but marries another.

The famous, moonlit ‘white act’ – The Kingdom of the Shades – is a corps de ballet highlight, as multiple images of the prince’s lost love haunt his mind. The choreography allows two opposing ballerinas to shine, while a bronze idol comes vividly to life in a stunning solo. Throughout, the melody and moods of Minkus’s music perfectly match the fluidity and precision of the classical choreography and the drama of the storytelling.

The Detroit-based Sphinx Organization is dedicated to transforming lives through the power of diversity in the arts. Their programs focus on four main principles: education and access, artist development, performing artists, and arts leadership. The experience from this competition offers young Black and Latinx classical string players a chance to compete under the guidance of an internationally renowned panel of judges and to perform with established professional musicians in a competition setting. This performance features three of the nation’s leading Black and Latinx artists – who are previous winners of the Sphinx Competition – and includes dynamic solo and chamber works. Performers: Elena Urioste, Gabriel Cabezas, Xavier Foley, and Tom Poster.

Voices Without Borders presents A Time to Shine, a variety show celebrating the amazing talent of Northern Michigan! The group that puts the “mock” in Democracy. The Capitol Steps have recorded over 35 albums, including their latest, Make America Grin Again. They’ve been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS, and can be heard twice a year on National Public Radio stations nationwide during their Politics Takes a Holiday radio special. No matter who or what is in the headlines, you can bet the Capitol Steps will tackle both sides of the political spectrum and all things equally foolish. The Capitol Steps have performed for the last five Presidents (six, if you include Hillary). The only complaints the Steps seem to get are from politicians and personalities who are not included in the program!

Tchaikovsky’s most ambitious opera contains some of his greatest music and is a powerful study of destructive obsession. In Tchaikovsky’s intense opera of obsession and the supernatural, Gherman is caught between the woman he loves and a destructive fixation. The Queen of Spades is based on a short story by Pushkin and comes to the Royal Opera House in a new production that has already garnered five-star reviews in Amsterdam. The production is set in 1890, the year of the opera’s premiere. In his study, Tchaikovsky imagines the opera into life as his own story, its characters giving voice to his unfulfilled desires. Aleksandrs Antonenko and Eva-Maria Westbroek head the cast and Royal Opera Chorus, conducted by Antonio Pappano, Music Director of The Royal Opera.

VIENNA BOYS CHOIR

WORLD FAMOUS BOY’S CHOIR

Audiences and critics worldwide praise the talented singers of the Vienna Boys Choir for their angelic voices, pure tone, and irresistible charm. Today, there are 100 choristers between the ages of nine and fourteen, divided into four touring choirs.

Together, the choirs give 300 concerts each year, attended by almost half a million spectators around the world. The choir has been a cultural institution for more than 500 years and their repertoire includes everything from medieval to contemporary music. Motets and lieder form the core of the touring repertoire, as do the choir’s own arrangements of Viennese music. The choir also performs children’s operas and world music. The Vienna Boys Choir performs with major orchestras, such as the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, and the Staatskapelle Berlin.

GREAT LAKES CHAMBER ORCHESTRA PRESENTS: VIOLINS OF HOPE

ORCHESTRA CONCERT

The Violins of Hope concert features works by Czech composers, Pavel Haas, Gideon Klein and Hans Krasa, who lived in the Terezín concentration camp and died during the Holocaust. They helped organize cultural life at Terezín, one of the few camps in which artistic activity was eventually permitted by the Nazis. Additional musical selections include Schindler’s List: Theme from Schindler’s List, Jewish Town and Remembrance and excerpts from the Mozart Requiem with the GLCO Chorus. Please join us for a special evening of music played on a Violin of Hope, a restored instrument once played by inmates in the Terazín Concentration Camp in Czechoslovakia.

The Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra is partnering with more than a dozen local groups and organizations on a community-wide series of events around these instruments. The sound, presence and stories of these instruments will drive the creation of music, visual art, theater, public conversation, interfaith dialogue, readings and educational activities throughout Northern Michigan.

Franc D’Ambrosio is best known for his impressive portrayal of the Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award-winning musical, The Phantom of the Opera. Franc has been recognized as the world’s longest-running Phantom and is affectionately known as the “Iron Man of the Mask.”

Franc’s resume also includes an Academy Award-nominated film where he played the opera-singing son of Al Pacino and Diane Keaton in the Godfather III. He also sang the Academy Award winning theme song of the movie, Speak Softly Love, for both the film and the soundtrack. His performances of the theme song have garnered over one million hits on YouTube. Franc has toured his one-man shows nationally and internationally for 11 years, releasing three solo Cd’s.

THE DOROTHY GERBER STRINGS PROGRAM PRESENTS: YEAR-END CONCERT

ORCHESTRA CONCERT

SATURDAY MAY 11 6:00PM This concert is FREE and open to the public but a ticket must be presented to be admitted.

The Dorothy Gerber Strings Program (DGSP) provides lessons and classes in orchestral string instruments for children and youth throughout Charlevoix, Emmet and Antrim counties. Every May, the program brings together all students for a concert, demonstrating their growth and mastery of new skills. All aspects of the DGSP are featured on this collage concert, including beginning and intermediate classes, private lesson and Suzuki students, the Dorothy Gerber Youth Orchestra, and The Cummings Quartet. CHORAL MUSIC

LITTLE TRAVERSE CHORAL SOCIETY PRESENTS: CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF SONG

The Little Traverse Choral Society is made up of approximately 70 voices ranging in age from early 20s to nearly 90 and represents communities from Cheboygan to East Jordan. They have been delighting audiences for 30 years.

This performance will be under the direction of Chris Hodges of Gaylord and accompanied by pianist Ellen Kendall.

The LTCS is known for its performance of signature classical pieces.

A sampling of selections the ensemble has performed includes Schubert’s Mass in G Major, Bach’s Magnificat, Haydn’s The Creation and The Seven Last Words of Christ, Poulenc’s Gloria, Mozart’s Requiem plus Bach’s Kantate 150.

The LTCS has also performed the works of contemporary composers such as John Rutter, Aaron Copeland, and Ralph Vaughan Williams and has premiered compositions by local artists: Thomas Woehrmann’s Chorale Prelude on St. Crispin and Jerry Westerman’s American Requiem based on letters and poems of servicemen during the Vietnam War. In recognition of their 30th anniversary, this concert will feature favorite pieces chosen from previous LTCS concerts, as well as new repertoire which celebrates music and singing. In addition, the Little Traverse Youth Choir will be singing several selections. www.littletraversechoralsociety.org
