Willkommen!

The Community of Gaylord and the Gaylord Alpenfest Committee would like to welcome you to this year’s 54th Annual 2018 Alpenfest. Our theme this year is “Follow Your Heart Home” and we couldn’t have come up with a better theme as we welcome those coming to Alpenfest who are on vacation, attending scheduled reunions, or just stopping by and visiting old and making new friends. Alpenfest is a celebration that has families coming together to enjoy various activities and events that the week has to offer. Our theme could not have been better scripted as this year we welcome home Lauren Duski. Lauren is a native of Gaylord and placed second on the hit TV singing competition, The Voice. Lauren is one of Nashville’s up and coming female artists and we are excited about her performing on the Alpenfest Stage on Friday, July 13th. Alpenfest 2018 has added more events and entertainment to its lineup this year for all ages to enjoy. We have added more rides provided by TJ Schmidt Amusements. Our DTE Foundation Art Tent has expanded with painting classes for the entire family each day. New this year is the United Health Care Kids Tent on the Courthouse Lawn featuring kids games, events and performances by clowns and magicians. Our Ethnic Alley has expanded this year to include more ethnic foods from all over the world. Healthy Cooking demonstrations will also take place under the Family Fare Pavilion with much of the food and produce provided by our local Farmers Market. Stop by many of the local businesses on Main Street. The Downtown Merchants Association has a number of businesses and restaurants that will be offering specials and discounts on merchandise with your Alpenfest pin. Speaking of Alpenfest Pins, please make sure you purchase yours early, as this will entitle you the numerous food give-a-ways that we have planned throughout the entire week. They are available at the merchandise tent as well as businesses throughout the Gaylord community. To keep up to date on all the attractions that Alpenfest has to offer this year, please download our new Gaylord Alpenfest app which is available for free on iTunes and Google Play. On behalf of the City of Gaylord, Our Sponsors, the Gaylord Chamber of Commerce and the volunteer Alpenfest Board, we hope you have a enjoyable time at this year’s Alpenfest and we encourage you to “Follow your Heart Home”. Lampion Parade

The Lampion Parade originated in Switzerland, where it also coincides with the burning of the Boogg during their spring celebration. Parsnips are hollowed out, and designs are cut into the sides. Next the lantern is then placed into a macramé basket, and a candle is placed inside. At Alpenfest®, children and adults cut designs into the sides and top of a box. The designs are then covered with colored tissue paper or plastic wrap. A flashlight is inserted providing light as well as a handle to carry the lantern. Everyone carries their lampion in a procession that takes the Boogg to its burning site.

The Legend of

THE BOOGG

Boogg, a giant snowman of cotton wool, symbolizes winter to the Swiss, and they burn the statue yearly with colorful pageantry to celebrate the beginning of spring. In Gaylord, the Burning of the Boogg has taken on new meaning and added delight. Alpine Village residents and visitors jot down their troubles and problems on slips of paper and then place them inside the Boogg. The Boogg is then ignited, and everyone’s troubles go up in smoke! Now all can enjoy the fun and festivities of Alpenfest®!

The Legend

HERR GESSLER OF

According to legend, Gessler was an evil ruler in Switzerland and Austria in the 13th century. He forced everyone in the area to bow down to his hat as a symbol of authority. Gessler would leave his hat in the square and all those who passed it would be forced to bow down. When William Tell, who had been hunting in the mountains with his son when Gessler came into power, came into the square he did not bow down to the feathered hat. Herr Gessler became so enraged that he arrested Tell and his son. As punishment, Tell had to shoot an apple off his son’s head. Tell succeeded and then turned his arrow on Gessler. Tell was able to overthrow Gessler and become the new ruler. Somehow Gessler was able to escape to Gaylord a few hundred years later. He now tries to ruin Alpenfest® for everyone by demanding quiet and that passers-by bow down to his hat. However, the Alpine Village wins over the evil tyrant with the sweet lyrics of “Edelweiss.”
