East Jordan Chamber Guide 2025

Page 1

to the land where "MAKE-IT-HAPPEN" is our middle name!

Welcome!!

As I look at the communities of East Jordan, Ellsworth and Atwood, I can’t believe how we are “making it happen”!

Ever since the dedication and opening in June of 2024 of the Don and Eileen Klein Nature Trail with its “universally accessible” boardwalk, to the addition of several new sculptures on the Jordan Art Walk, to adding 21 new Chamber of Commerce members, we are B-U-S-Y!! Also new for our Chamber, we have joined Circle Michigan and we look forward to welcoming bus tours! This year we now have many wonderful new improvements in East Jordan’s Memorial Park including a pavilion addition, picnic tables, memorial benches and enhancements to the park's bandshell which will all help in welcoming business patrons, harbor visitors and local citizens. This was made possible by a grant from the MI Economic MEDC RAP 2.0 Grant Program. In Ellsworth, a newly formed non-profit organization is upgrading and enhancing the Ellsworth Labyrinth. Our region is constantly “making things happen”!

Our business communities are “happening” too! Several new businesses have located in the area and we are also home to several successful multi-generational industries and businesses, some of which are celebrating or having milestone anniversaries. Success breeds success! Now is the time to think about making that “dream” to start a business a reality in one of our Breezeway Communities and “make it happen.”

For complete area information, event schedules and more, visit our website at www.ejchamber.org, phone us at 231-536-7351, e-mail us at info@ejchamber.org or stop by our Chamber office at 100 Main Street downtown East Jordan in the Main Street Center.

MAKE your next vacation, relocation, recreational experience or business venture HAPPEN in one of our Breezeway Communities of East Jordan, Ellsworth or Atwood!

Most sincerely,

Mary, David Schweer & Shannon

The Jordan Art Walk is a series of sculptures strategically placed throughout the downtown community, integrated with the beautiful ‘Joining Jordan Boardwalk.’ The project began in 2021 and sculptures have been added each year - some for sale, some not. Beginning in 2023, those sculptures that were not permanent pieces in the Art Walk were then rotated out so that the Art Walk is now an evolving exhibit.

The Art Walk is also your chance to get outside, exercise, and enjoy East Jordan's natural beauty. Our brochure provides the distance between each sculpture both distance and steps. Walk the full path and travel close over 1/2 mile! So, pick up a brochure! Start "Exploring Nature Through Art"!

LAKES & RIVERS

The Jordan River

The 24.9-mile-long Jordan River is the largest tributary of Lake Charlevoix. Its headwaters rise from springs in the upper Jordan River Valley northeast of Mancelona in Antrim County. The Jordan River was the first river to be designated in Michigan's Natural Rivers Program and is well known for its world-class brook trout fishing and scenic canoe, kayak and raft trips. The river is accessible by many roads & trails.

Lake Charlevoix

Lake Charlevoix was once voted the second best lake in America in a USA Today poll, behind only Lake Tahoe. Being awarded this honor is partly due to the many forms of recreation the lake provides, including swimming, kayaking, sailing, fishing, diving, boating, water skiing, and just relaxing on the beach. Lake Charlevoix is also one of Michigan’s largest and most magnificent lakes. It is the 3rd largest lake in the state in terms of surface area, but its shoreline length far exceeds that of any other inland lake in Michigan. If you kayak the entire shoreline of Lake Charlevoix, you will have traversed 60 miles!

Chain of Lakes Water Trail

The Chain of Lakes Water Trail is one of only eight state-designated water trails and the only water trail in Northern Michigan. This water trail has over 80 miles of routes to explore and something for all types of paddlers. It was recently named the first Pure Michigan Water Trail.

The Upper Chain is made up of smaller lakes and is a great experience for beginner paddlers. Begin, end or pass through three lakeside communities - Ellsworth, Central Lake, and Bellairewhere you will find food, camping, and all the other amenities.

The Lower Chain includes larger lakes like Torch Lake and Elk Lake for experienced paddlers. Explore the Grass River Natural Area, find a sunken ship, or just enjoy the turquoise waters of Torch Lake. In Bellaire, Alden, and Elk Rapids you will find all you need to enjoy your time on the water. Don't forget Paddle Antrim Sept. 12-13 www.paddleantrim.com

A LITTLE HISTORY

Make it Happen: A Personal Perspective

Dearest Gentle Reader,

East Jordan's "Make it Happen" view of the world probably started when it was first settled in 1873 by William Empey, who built the first store and became the first postmaster. But I can only tell you about the last 21 years working with Mary Faculak, as I have observed from my perch as your EJCC Visitor Guide designer, among other things.

In 2005, Mary and I decided to create the Guide ourselves instead of having a publishing house do it which was standard practice. "They" said we couldn't do it... that we'd be back to "them" next year. But we've "made it happen" now for 21 years. (And thank you again, Chip Hansen, for our first theme - "All Seasons. All Reasons.")

Not sure exactly when it was formed, but "Team EJ" was definitely featured in our 2005 Guide. This was a group that came together to promote economic development in East Jordan and included any and all major "players" in the community. We had "Fun with Photoshop" several years with some of the team members.

We formed the Breezeway Task Force in 2008. The “Breezeway” communities of East Jordan, Ellsworth and Atwood were in pursuit of branding and marketing our spectacular “well-kept” secret region located in the northwest section of C-48 in Charlevoix and Antrim counties, as a household name and vacation destination. We even got a nice grant from the State and our picture taken with Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm.

In 2010, Leadership Charlevoix County was formed to ensure that the future was fully stocked with "Make it Happen" community members. It's success has been immeasurable!

Greenlight East Jordan, launched in 2015, was another amazing "Make it Happen" program the Chamber brought to us. This was a business model competition, where contestants had the chance to win up to $10k to launch their business.

"Energize • Engage • Enhance" is a 2016 Chamber-sponsored program designed to reach out to new members of our community and others who are not yet involved in a club, organization or event. One of the best ways to "Make it Happen" is to engage more volunteers. “Many hands make less work for all.”

I do want to mention something on a personal note. My husband, Richard Hodgson, passed away in January this year. Not only was he MY "Make it Happen" guy, but he was "that person" for so many others... in all of Charlevoix County. He was a partner in the Main Street Center historic rebirth, was a founder of Charlevoix State Bank, and was on both the East Jordan and Charlevoix Chamber boards, among so many other things. We MUST carry on his spirit.

I'm sure there are many more things that I am leaving out that go into "Making it Happen" in East Jordan. I'm proud of us. Let's keep it up!

THE "AGRICULTURE" TRAIL

The family farm, orchard or market stand are not what they used to be. Having faced numerous challenges over the years, our agricultural world has had to adapt, diversify and really enhance the agricultural experience for all to enjoy and learn from.

The Breezeway communities feature an excellent selection of agricultural experiences and this could easily become a “day-trip” adventure for all ages:

PEOPLE & OTHER NEWS

Two Prestigious Awards ... Congratulations, Matt!

In February, East Jordan Middle/High School teacher Matt Hamilton was named the winner of the nation’s most prestigious educational award. Hamilton won the 2025 NEA Member Benefits Award for Teaching Excellence during the Salute to Excellence in Education gala in Washington D.C.

The NEA Foundation had already previously honored Hamilton by naming him one of five recipients of the Horace Mann Award for Teaching Excellence. He is the first teacher from Michigan to ever receive the recognition.

Hamilton is the founder and leader of the school’s renowned “Shoe Club.” The club collects shoes from notable people around the world to reinforce the importance of hard work and dedication.

The club’s collection includes autographed sneakers from Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Michael Jordan; signed red pumps from Dolly Parton; ski boots from Olympic gold medalist Mikaela Shiffrin; dress shoes from cell phone inventor Martin Cooper; and a pair of snakeskin-patterned heels from Governor Gretchen Whitmer. www.shoeclub.org

Two Very Hearty Welcomes!

A Couple of News Flashes from Ellsworth

1) Thanks to their new sublimation printer and heat press, the Ellsworth Community School's graphics class now has the abiity to create custom designs for student and public organizations and events, including t-shirts, and banners.

They then stepped up their game with the addition of a brand-new Inventables CNC machine! Students have been busy designing, carving, and painting custom wood signs, and the results are impressive.

2) "Friends of the Labyrinth" is a 501c3 organization formed in 2024 to start an endowment to maintain one of Ellsworth's unique amenities, The Labyrinth & Sensory Garden.

OUR TOWNS

City of East Jordan

Where River, Lake and Friendly People Meet

In addition to City Hall operations, the East Jordan city government departments include 24-hour police protection, a devoted volunteer fire department, public works that includes public water & sewer services, parks/recreation, membership in the Jordan Valley EMS Authority and a very active Downtown Development Authority working on multiple projects and partnership efforts.

East Jordan is very proud of where we’re going and where we’ve been. Teamwork is a key component in everything we do. Leadership and collaborations between organizations, businesses, schools and government operations are strong in East Jordan and continue to build a resilient community.

Banks Township

Banks Township is a rural jewel in the north end of Antrim County. The spring and summer months bring a gorgeous green to our rolling hills; the Chain of Lakes provide ample water recreation opportunities; and winter offers up a crisp change of scenery on the lakes. Play on the Lake Michigan shoreline at Banks Township Park or walk and bike ride the non-motorized trails at Antrim Creek Natural Area. Whatever your recreational itch, Banks Township is a great destination to scratch it.

Village of Ellsworth

Founded in 1881 and incorporated as a village in 1938, Ellsworth is located on the scenic Breezeway and Chain of Lakes. If you are seeking a great place to live, retire, or play, Ellsworth is the place. With its park system, waterways, scenic roads, and snowmobile trails, Ellsworth is a great area to take advantage of Michigan’s Natural Resources during the four seasons.

Atwood

Atwood is home to several farm markets, a winery, 3 restaurants, a John Deere mecca, a motel, a famous tiny chapel and an 18-hole golf course. Oh, and a 156-acre public natural area is located on Lake Michigan which has some of the best sunsets in the State!

OUR SCHOOLS

Ellsworth Community School

Ellsworth Community School has a long and distinguished history of offering unequaled educational opportunities. Our motto “Big School Opportunities, Small School Relationships” summarizes our approach to education. Each student at Ellsworth is nurtured and encouraged to sample many academic and extra-curricular activities and to develop his or her unique talents. Most students actively participate in numerous before and after school activities while attending Ellsworth Community School.

With a small student to teacher/staff ratio, all Ellsworth students have access to opportunities that are virtually unheard of in other schools its size, including; free developmental pre-school, full day kindergarten, on-line learning opportunities for advanced classes and credit recovery, college credit at no charge to students, music/art/ physical education for all students, iPads in every classroom, one-one laptops for all high school students, and access to career/technical education programs in graphic arts, agriculture, and building trades.

Ebenezer Christian School

Ebenezer Christian School in Ellsworth, founded in 1945, is a nondenominational school. Our Preschool was founded in 2002. The preschool uses Zoo Phonics which is a method developed to make children strong readers at an early age. Our students use iPad’s during the school year which are integrated into their curriculum. The teacher incorporates online learning in all subjects and utilizes apps that are created specifically for education. Though we are a small school, we offer a great education in a loving environment and strive to be an extension of the home.

North Central Michigan College

Since 1958, North Central Michigan College in Petoskey has been opening the door to academic success for residents by offering two-year associate degrees in the arts and sciences that are transferable to upper division colleges and universities. In addition, North Central has paved the path to better-paying careers through its applied science programs in business, education, health science, criminal justice, information technology and manufacturing. Equally important, North Central provides a second chance for residents by advancing their skills, switching careers or just getting more from life through higher education.

East Jordan Public Schools

Building a foundation with a world class education combined with the small school feel and caring environment that our parents have come to trust, our goal is to provide our students with experiences that will last a lifetime... and memories to share forever. EJPS comprises a vibrant part of the community and takes its job of educating East Jordan’s youth seriously. Thanks to our generous community, the district was recently able to upgrade infrastructural items, replace technology, provide secure entry ways, replace buses, and overhaul the high school gym.

In the classrooms, on stage, and on the field of competition, East Jordan students continue to make us proud. We are pleased to boast a wide variety of academic courses, and continue to grow while challenging our students to create, design, build, and apply.

While academic studies and preparation is a primary focus, it is also recognized that in order to prepare our students to be well-rounded, productive members of a community, we must encourage them to take pride in all areas of their growth. Whether through athletics, the arts, community service or simply treating others with respect, East Jordan Pride is a commitment to always doing your best.

Char-Em Intermediate School District

Char-Em ISD is a regional education service agency serving the public schools of Charlevoix, Emmet and northern Antrim counties.

Our primary mission is to provide leadership and services that enhance the delivery of instruction for our 11 constituent school districts and assisting other public and parochial schools. We match services, materials and personnel in the areas of special education, school improvement, professional development, early childhood, vocational education, school safety, and administrative/business services, among other areas of expertise, to the needs of our local schools.
