CTAC A Summer of Painting

ART NEWS PETOSKEY & TRAVERSE CITY • SUMMER 2018

From Dan Ledingham, Board Chairman and Liz Ahrens, Executive Director/President Legacy. Our founders had a vision for including the arts as a vital component to our community. We truly believe they would be proud of the path that Crooked Tree Arts Center has been on for nearly five decades— and how they continue to impact CTAC after they are gone. eddi Offield’s daughter-in-law, Susan Offield, has an exhibit this summer. Carolyn Rader’s granddaughter, Megan Mainland, and her family, support our youth programs and New Year’s Eve event with a grant from the KroegerMainland Family Fund at Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation. Nephew of Edith Gilbert, Larry Smith, is dedicating proceeds from a new festival he’s created to CTAC’s School of Music. Forty-seven years after their initial meeting in 1971, the legacy of our founders lives on. Long View. For 2018, we are launching a week-long plein air festival, Paint Grand Traverse. Already garnering national attention, with every intention to make this event an annual happening, we are eager to host 44 artists as they paint their way around Leelanau, Old Mission, Sleeping Bear Dunes, and downtown Traverse City. The festival will spotlight hundreds of creative professionals who make their home and living here along the shores of Northern Michigan. We live the arts each day with guidance from the spirit of our founders and the bright light of our future.

Crooked Tree Arts Center (CTAC) is a community arts organization committed to providing quality and unique arts experiences for Northern Michigan residents and visitors. Through fine art exhibitions, lectures, workshops, art fairs, dance and music programs, concerts and more, CTAC inspires and enriches lives through the arts.

SUMMER EXHIBITS THROUGH AUGUST 18

Living Here By Design: A Celebration of Creativity in Northern Michigan This summer, our galleries and schedule of events are dedicated to highlighting the work of regional artists. Through our exhibitions, lectures, and performances, we are celebrating creativity, design, and our personal connections to this inspiring place.

MIND INTO MATTER: CYNTHIA RUTHERFORD

Seeing and Being Seen: Susan Offield

A visual journey of interpretation informed by the memories, people, and events that have impacted and influenced the artist, woman, and human that Cynthia Rutherford has become. Rutherford’s art takes its form from the lines of life itself; the lines twist and change, extend and accumulate and drip, are heavy and coarse, sometimes blunt, sometimes stupid, often tender and, perhaps too often, sad, such as life itself.

An exhibition emphasizing portraits and the human figure. The portrait is composed of everything under the sun; shape, form, color, light, energy. It offers endless challenges, not just in the technical sense, but also emotionally and personally.

“Painting, for me, serves as a metaphor for the phenomenon of recollection. The way I paint simulates the process of remembering, with all its layers and numerous textures.”

“The stakes feel high when I paint a person. It’s vital for me to capture some truth about them; their physical likeness; a sense of their spirit. The live portrait sitting is where the big magic happens. Ideas and conversations flow, hearts are open, ‘selves’ are revealed. It is such a privilege. I see the subject and they see me.”

NORTHERN MICHIGAN: LIVING IT, LOVING IT! CTAC KITCHEN PAINTERS Through September 8 Over 20 area artists capture the beauty and spirit of Northern Michigan in their original paintings. Many of these artists have lived in other cities around the world yet have chosen to settle in Northern Michigan —and they love it! Come see fresh, original art that so creatively relates their love for an area they now call home— Northern Michigan.

THE FIBER WORK OF SHERRI SMITH An exhibit showcasing Sherri Smith’s most recent textile series based on astronomy and NASA photographs. The nuances of palette, ingenuity of technique and structure, luxuriance of textures and materials, and mathematically calculated subtleties of form, contribute to the strength and uniqueness of Smith’s exhibit.

UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF SHERRI SMITH An exhibition of works created by a selection of artists who completed their MFA degrees under Sherri Smith at the University of Michigan School of Art (Penny Stamps) Graduate Fiber Program. The exhibit highlights the artists’ current fiber and fiber-inspired works, including weaving, sculpture, video, printed textiles, and mixed media assemblages.

One of his earliest memories is watching his mom while she painted by the ocean, using their car as an easel. Over the years, he has worked in a variety of materials including pottery, glass, and most recently, his mixed-media fish. As a CTAC Board Member, Stephen volunteers his time and efforts to help the organization grow. CTAC relies on the generous support of our volunteers, donors, and members—making the featured D’Art artwork name, Volunteer— Saw Tooth, a perfect fit.

BRI WILSON

CTAC Alumni: The Next Chapter BRI WILSON recently graduated from the Alonzo King LINES Ballet BFA Program in San Francisco, California. This past academic year, Bri completed her BFA in dance and minor in writing; performed her senior solo; choreographed a ten-minute work entitled “Docile Bodies” informed by the writings of Michel Foucault and Judith Butler; and performed in the BFA Senior Showcase at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. With all that under her belt, and much more, we looked back at Bri’s journey in the world of dance and her time with the CTAC School of Ballet. For eleven years, Bri trained with the CTAC School of Ballet under the instruction of Artistic Director Heather Raue, and dance instructors Karrie Benedict and Stephanie Cope. One lesson in particular that Bri learned from Raue, Benedict, and Cope, and carried through her years at LINES, was how to work hard and well: to keep asking more of herself, even when she thought she didn’t have more to give. Bri built a foundation of knowledge at the School of Ballet, and supplemented her training there with dance intensives across the United States from New York City to San Francisco. While in college, Bri attended Hubbard Street Dance Chicago Summer and Winter programs and Movement Invention Project (MIP) in New York City. The latter happened to be her favorite: “I left the intensive with a profoundly deepened connection to dance,” said Bri. “It was at MIP that I learned to trust embodied knowledge and reaffirmed the vital nature of curiosity and play in dance improvisation practice.”

curiosity and play in dance improvisation practice.” Claire Millard

Having now completed her undergraduate studies, Bri has returned home to Northern Michigan for the summer months to work, create, collaborate, and perform with local dancers, musicians, and artists. As for what’s next, Bri said: “I’ve lived my entire life with a plan, and I’d like to see what can happen when I let go of that…for the most part.” Even though she doesn’t have it all planned out, Bri does know what kind of job she wants in the future: “I would love to create enormous, site-specific dance installations in museums, art galleries, parks, beaches, etc. It is especially important to me that these installations are interactive, and blur the distinction between observer and performer.” Years of studying, practicing, and exploring with CTAC School of Ballet, LINES, and programs around the country have given Bri the confidence to instruct and perform on her own terms, emphasizing her unique style of contemporary dance in this new chapter of her life.

Charles and Norma Randolph

A Long History of Supporting the Arts ORIGINALLY FROM DETROIT PROPER, Charles and Norma both grew up with a connection to the arts. Norma was exposed to the visual arts early on, as her mother was a painter; her grandfather was a designer and builder of carriages; and her maternal uncle was an artist, patronized by Henry Ford. A painter in her own right, Norma works in watercolor, acrylic, and oils, using various techniques that she learned from her mother. Charles was more musically inclined while growing up, playing the trumpet in his youth. It was through Norma and their travels that Charles’ appreciation for the visual arts grew. During Charles’ career with General Motors he worked as a draftsman, helping design the Corvette engine, and also in the International Operations, Engineering, and Business Development departments. Once he became involved with GM’s joint ventures, he and Norma began living overseas and experiencing the arts and cultures of Australia, South Korea, Mexico, Brazil, and Singapore. While overseas, Norma took art classes, experimented in different media, patronized museums and galleries, took an interest in interior design in South Korea, and even curated and installed an exhibit of sculpture and 3-D work in Brazil. Charles and Norma developed a deep love for Mexico and the Mexican culture while living there, and they return to San Miguel almost every year.

A General Motors retiree with an extensive resume, and a painter with a strong artistic background – Charles and Norma Randolph have lived in far-off countries, are dedicated supporters of the arts, and for the past twenty years, have called Charlevoix home. It is here in our Northern Michigan community, and with Crooked Tree Arts Center, that Charles and Norma have decided to share their expertise, creativity, and appreciation for the arts.

After retiring, Charles and Norma moved to Charlevoix and built the house they currently live in. It was after settling into Northern Michigan life that they became involved with Crooked Tree. Norma befriended CTAC founder Edith Gilbert, and Nancy Porter asked Charles to help with the first big D’Art for Art event at Brek-n-Ridge Farm. “Nancy dragged me into that, and Ermy (Bonfield) got her claws in me around that time, too,” laughed Charles. He’s been a part of the annual fundraiser ever since. For twenty years, he has been lending his management skills and expertise, successfully helping to orchestrate the event year in and year out. Thanks to Charles’ dedication and teamwork, D’Art for Art gets bigger each year, and brings in new arts lovers and supporters—“Who would’ve thought it would last this long,” said Charles.“It has a life of its own.” Aside from D’Art, Charles served on CTAC’s Board for two terms and spearheaded the Kitchen Renovation of 2016. As for her involvement in CTAC, Norma has donated artwork to D’Art, exhibited in the Annual Juried Fine Arts Exhibition several times, and even captured a Best in Show. Her favorite Crooked Tree memory will warm your heart: “I love looking back and seeing what Charles has done and accomplished with the Arts Center —that’s my favorite.” For CTAC’s future, Charles would like to see continued growth, but not so much that the Arts Center loses its ‘home-townish’ feel. While Charles’ look to the future is broad, Norma’s is more focused: “The growth since we arrived has been tremendous, sophisticated,” said Norma. “CTAC needs to continue growing the youth programming for the future. Children gain so much through the programming and experiences offered by Crooked Tree.” After all their adventures, Charles and Norma have devoted much of their time and efforts to Northern Michigan, Crooked Tree, and the arts community, and we’re all the better for the love and commitment they’ve given and continue to give.
