WHILE WE HAVE SO MUCH MEANINGFUL WORK TO REFLECT ON OVER THE COURSE OF 2018, I AM BUSTING AT THE SEAMS ABOUT THE UPCOMING EVENTS FOR 2019—

TWENTY-EIGHTEEN brought us our inaugural Dragon Boat Festival that was by all accounts a resounding success. The day was filled with laughter, joy and oh yes… competition. As I said to someone at Ferry Beach Park that day, I have never laughed and smiled non-stop for six hours before. The morning after everyone was asking if we could do it again next week. The short answer was “no,” but we are moving forward and on August 3, 2019, we will meet again at Ferry Beach Park. Paddles up!

The Dorothy Gerber Strings Program continues to flourish under the tutelage of Dr. David Reimer and his assistant Chas Helge.

The holiday season was filled with concerts all over northern Michigan highlighting the remarkable work that all in the program have contributed. We look forward to music in the air in the coming year.

Our exhibition schedule continues to inspire with innovative perspectives on new and traditional themes. Upcoming we have fine art illustration, student scholars and a whimsical look at the world around us. I am pleased to announce that our Armchair Theater is back in great form and working on a performance for May 5th that reflects the Portraits of Whimsy exhibition in the gallery. We thank Sandy Miles for her wisdom and infectious spirit of the written word.

Our Inner Circle Gallery Talks have now moved to 12 noon and will be a brown bag lecture series. In the first quarter of the year we explore the New Year’s night sky and the work of marvelous local children’s book illustrators. Our dance program is back in full swing and we anticipate seeing our budding ballerinas in our magnificent studio.

I invite you to look at all three of our websites: charlevoixcircle.org, gerberstrings.org and charlevoixdragonfestival.org. They are interlinked and update you daily to a host of our programming.

We could not do what we do without the support of the community, our foundation leaders, our volunteers and the talented artists that we have the joy to work with.

We hope you visit us and experience the programming that we are working on. There is certainly a great deal to celebrate in the New Year!

DECEMBER CONCERT REWIND On November 16, the DGSP reached a new milestone. Twenty young string players who take private lessons with the program performed in a solo recital for an enthusiastic audience at the Charlevoix United Methodist Church.

One by one they walked to center stage and demonstrated the value of the investment of all involved—the many hours of practice by the students, the encouragement and financial support of parents, the teaching expertise of the DGSP teachers (David Reimer, Chas Helge and Elizabeth Bert), and the support of the Cummings Fund, the Charlevoix County Community Foundation and the Charlevoix Circle of Arts.

Area pianists Michelle Mitchum and Rebecca Tharp accompanied the students for an evening they will not soon forget!

The following day, the Suzuki Program performed another recital, featuring the youngest students in the DGSP. December was the month of concerts by the DGSP classes and the Dorothy Gerber Youth Orchestra. It all began with an exciting collage of performances on December 1 at the Charlevoix Circle of Arts. Beginning and intermediate students from programs in Charlevoix, East Jordan and Ellsworth collaborated to perform first, followed by the DGYO in its most extensive program to date. The Cummings Quartet again collaborated with the students and then performed alone for all in attendance.

STUDENT PRACTICE CHALLENGE

In October, The Cummings Quartet formally welcomed new DGSP Assistant Director Chas Helge to the program by including him in their Fall performance at the Charlevoix Circle of Arts. This performance will be followed by two concerts in the winter.

On February 10, Chas will offer a cello recital at Christ Episcopal Church in Charlevoix, including collaborations with David Reimer and Elizabeth Bert.

The Cummings Quartet will next perform at the Charlevoix Circle of Arts on March 3. This program will include a quartet by Felix Mendelssohn and the iconic "Adagio for Strings"

by Samuel Barber.

2018 was an Olympic year, so Dr. Reimer chose an Olympic theme for a practice challenge that invited the DGSP students to improve their practice habits in pursuit of Gold Medals! In 2019, the theme will become “February Madness,” inspired by the annual NCAA basketball tournament.

DGSP teachers use this opportunity to not only emphasize the importance of practice quantity, but also quality. Students will chart their practice efforts with the goal of winning championship rings (and other prizes).

The artwork on display was gifted to the Lucile Clarke Memorial Children’s Library at CMU from the Francis and Mary Lois Molson original art collection. The Molson collection contains over 80 representations of children’s book illustration. This exhibition includes original pieces by such illustrious artists as Leo and Diane Dillon, Gennady Spirin, and David Small among others.

SPOTLIGHT ON INNOVATION Working with the Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University, this annual exhibit highlights the work of high school artists as they consider their future in creative fields after graduation. It follows the precept of KCAD to prepare students for leadership roles in the visual arts, design, art history, and art education. In 2018, Spotlight exhibiting high school artists were awarded over $64,000 in scholarships for excellence in the arts.

PORTRAITS OF WHIMSY A gathering of highly talented artists whose work employs a dash of whimsy and delight.

The artwork on display in this exhibit include paintings, assemblages, and sculptures that illustrate that “whimsy” can truly acquire the status of sophisticated fine art.

FEBRUARY 21 JANUARY 10 MARY STEWART ADAMS— THE COMPASS ROSE OF WIND & STARS AS A MEDITATION ON THE COSMIC HARMONY OF THE NEW YEAR Mary Stewart Adams, Star Lore Historian, will share the celestial highlights of the new year including a total eclipse of the moon that will occur on January 20-21. In addition, work on a hands-on project creating a compass rose of wind and stars.

On historical navigation maps, a “compass rose” usually appears as an 8-pointed star used to indicate the cardinal and ordinal directions.

CHARLES R. MURPHY— GALLERY TALK AND BOOK SIGNING OF THE WAKING HOUR Traverse City artist Charles R. Murphy has exhibited with the American Watercolor Society, the International Society of Experimental Artists, and has received an award for Art Educator of The Year. In the early 90s, a collaboration with a young, learning disabled girl yielded a multiple award-winning book, “Reach for the Moon”. This in turn, led to more book illustration projects including a book both written and illustrated by the artist, “The Waking Hour”.

MARCH 1 TRISH MORGAN— GALLERY TALK AND BOOK SIGNING Charlevoix watercolor artist Trish Morgan will discuss her work on the many books that she has illustrated in collaboration with East Jordan’s children’s book author Suzanne M. Malpass. Trish is a Kendall College of Art and Design graduate with a BFA in Illustration.

Her work has been accepted into the Michigan Watercolor Society, Georgia Watercolor Society, Louisiana Watercolor Society and the Transparent Watercolor Society of America's annual juried exhibitions with many awards and recognitions, including a first-place national award in 2008.

FEBRUARY 2: The Charlevoix Cultural Corridor will host another fun-filled community event on Groundhog Day—SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 1-4 PM. • At the Charlevoix Public Library, families can enjoy story time in the youth department at 1, 2 and 3 PM, and make a puppet craft to tell your own groundhog story.

• Stop by on the half hour at the Charlevoix Historical Society to learn about the history of Groundhog Day and the reasons this little marmot has become so famous.

• Ongoing throughout the festivities visit the Charlevoix Circle of Arts to be inspired by the traveling exhibit of children’s illustrations from the Clarke Library at CMU and head downstairs to snap a family photo with Charlevoix’s own, Shadow the Groundhog.

Art in the Afternoon | Thursdays • 12–3 PM Art enthusiasts gather on Thursday afternoons at the Circle to work in a supportive environment sharing ideas and concepts.

Most mediums are welcome and there is no fee to participate. This is a drop-in basis with no need to pre-register. You are welcome to stop by and introduce yourself and spend a few hours with others with similar interests. This is a great way to meet new people, learn new techniques and be inspired.

Shashiko

WITH ELIZABETH ROYAL February 16 | 9 AM–12 PM Fee: $80 includes materials Elizabeth Royal is a maker and mender living in a 1920's fixer upper in Detroit. During the day she's an instructional designer but in the evening, she tackles projects in her studio photography, Kintsugi, and visible mending.

Sashiko is a stitching technique from Japan originating to re-enforce or mend garments but is now used mostly as a decorative stitch.

You will learn basic decorative Sashiko stitching techniques from turns, stitch spacing, tool use, using a sampler with a traditional pattern.

You will also learn about the history of the art. Everyone will receive their own Sashiko sampler and a beginner’s kit.

Young Artist Atelier

Last Saturday of each month | 9 AM–12 PM Burgeoning artists work with professional artists to be mentored in fine art techniques. Open to students from middle through high school, limited to 10 students. Please call ahead to register your student at (231) 547-3554. Free.

Winter Dance Series WITH KRISTI EPPING

Wednesdays— Session I: January 9–February 13 Session II: Febraury 20–March 13 Fee: $48 per session

CREATIVE MOVEMENT AGES 2-3: 10:30-11 AM A wonderful introduction to all dance forms and includes movement and rhythm games done to inspiring music. This class focuses on body part identification, free expression, and spatial awareness.

BEGINNER BALLET

AGES 3-5: 5:30-6 PM AGES 6-10: 6-6:30 PM Dancers will learn ballet terminology, basic motor movement patterns and gain strength and flexibility along with balance, coordination, and grace. Barre work is introduced.

TAP

AGES 6-10: 6:30-7 PM Dance characterized by using one’s shoes, as well as the floor, as a percussive instrument— commonly considered to be a musical form as well. Students will be introduced to the two major variations—Rhythm (Jazz) tap and Broadway tap.

HIP HOP

AGES 6-10: 7-7:30 PM Influenced by today's music and culture, this freestyle dance form is based on jazz movements and hip-hop rhythms.

Fundamentals of Interior Design | WITH CJ ZONDERVAN Wednesdays • March 6–April 10 | 10 AM–12 PM | Fee: $150 CJ Zondervan is National Council for Interior Design Qualification certified with a BFA in Interior Design from Kendall College of Art & Design with specialized studies in historic preservation and restoration. She and her husband Dan own and operate True North Interior Design & Antiques in downtown Charlevoix. In this course, students will gain a deeper appreciation for interiors from many core perspectives. Whether you are embarking on a design project, designing a new house or are interested in all things beautiful and functional, CJ will broaden your perspective on making your living environment a more blissful place to live.

DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL 2019!

August 3 | Ferry Beach Park

THE CHARLEVOIX CIRCLE OF ARTS will host its second Dragon Boat Festival on August 3rd at Ferry Beach Park and it is not too early to register and start organizing your team! Dragon Boat Races are the fastest growing water sport activity in the world combining rich Chinese traditions, competition, team building and LOTS OF FUN!
