BOARD PRESIDENT Dear Friends, Extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures. A cliché but also an understatement when describing the alignment of converging pressures we must overcome here at the WLAC. With property values ascending new heights, the quickening of generational succession, and of course the COVID demand and supply-chain inflation on all our minds, these macro forces are felt by many.

Combining these forces plus the unique challenges that impact our small Up North community, makes it critical that we all work together and contribute our boldest solutions.

This season, the WLAC Board of Trustees and staff are embarking on developing a long-range vision and intrepid 5-year strategic plan (2023 - 2028). Paramount to this process is a basic agreement of what we are all working for: protecting Walloon. Perhaps this is best illustrated by understanding a “worst-case scenario.”

The photos included are from a case study recently presented by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy on advancing shoreline best practices on inland lakes. The first is an aerial photograph from 1938 of a small wetland area of Lake X (unnamed here so as not to shame anyone). Exhibited is a healthy, ecologically productive and undeveloped shoreline/wetland/lake interface.

Seventy-six years later in 2014 (in one lifetime – let that sink in), you can see the lakefront development and overcrowding that has occurred on Lake X. Across the seven decades documented in these photos, 48% of this lake’s productive shoreline wetlands were destroyed, contributing to an ever-decreasing water quality. The cumulative impacts of harmful shoreline alterations, non-point source pollution, run-off from impermeable surfaces and overloading the environmental carrying capacity is a sure way to expedite the inevitable demise of a lake.

The Wallooner | Summer 2022 Does this sound overly dramatic? I assure you it is not.

One of the most frequently asked questions we receive is why does conserving land around Walloon Lake matter? I would hope that this imagery makes the answer a little more obvious.

The watershed – the land around the lake – is incredibly critical to water quality. Every drop of rain, every time you wash your car, every time someone fertilizes their lawn, builds a home, or plows a field – each time land is altered in the watershed, the water quality of the lake is impacted.

Particularly for a relatively small inland lake that is naturally spring-fed like Walloon Lake. Cumulative impacts, big and small, chip away at this incredibly valuable and finite resource we all love.

The land protection activities of the WLAC are our best offense to protect the lake. Securing properties in our land trust directly or through conservation easements are promises made in perpetuity that the forests surrounding the lake will be there to protect our water quality for generations to come.

And while we have many active land projects as a result of the aforementioned gener-

3 ational shift and sizzling real estate market, later in this newsletter we will share a bit more about our Critical Lands Campaign and hopefully gain your support! We are leveling up our defensive positions on the waterfront too, with a new campaign and recommendations for safe wakesurfing on Walloon Lake.

Among the many multi-year initiatives we have taken on, you will see some of the following bear fruit this year: • New boat wash stations and signage at Sumner Road and Jones Landing – boat washes help to stop the spread of aquatic invasive species.

• A legislative call to action to implement more severe consequences to landscapers who operate without permits and install damaging shoreline alterations.

• Relaunch of the Lake Ambassador Program – let’s bring back the small neighborhood feel and work to educate and support each other to do the best for the lake!

• Endorsement of the 425’ active wake boat distance from the shoreline and 15’

depth – this helps protect our shorelines and keep one another safe.

• Helping to build marine patrol capacity with our local Sheriffs’ departments.

• Continuation of the Sound Down Campaign.

• New safety buoys with improved lighting and signage.

• Water quality testing and treatment in Schoof’s and Fineout Creek.

• Continued work on a lake-wide sound ordinance.

• The second year of our native plant sale and ongoing shoreline education.

WLAC’s 3 pillars are land, water and people. Land conservation, water quality protection and bringing people together – three interconnected facets of our work that give us the best chance to deliver on the promise of a pristine Walloon, forever.

A Lasting Legacy

The Maus Family’s Beautiful Homestead Becomes a WLAC Preserve

t lies shimmering at the northernmost tip of the lake, pristine and tranquil. For decades, Wallooners have glided softly through its peaceful depths, perhaps a little awestruck by the mysterious stillness of the lovely waters of Mud Lake. There are enchanting tales of eagles soaring above in a cerulean sky, swans gliding gracefully through the placid water and deer drinking peacefully on the quiet shore.

This is Walloon's cherished Mud Lake, now today called Mill Pond. It is not just aesthetically pleasing, however. From an ecological perspective, it is one of the single most important areas of Walloon, consisting mainly of wetlands that recharge and filter Walloon’s water. Situated at the top of the West Arm just one mile away from Lake Michigan, and elevated at 233 ft. above sea level, recharged water from this wetland flows more than 20 miles through the main body of Walloon to the Bear River, and eventually into Little Traverse Bay. Its eco-

logical impact on all of Walloon is simply phenomenal.

The beautiful land on the west side of Mill Pond has an interesting history, closely

tied to some of Petoskey's best known families. Once the 130-acre homestead of the Comstock Family, the Mill Pond property was purchased by the William Maus family in the late 1950's as a summer residence on Walloon.

0.3 Miles As a young man, retailer William Maus had journeyed to Petoskey to work at the venerable Fochtman Department Store. He

The Wallooner | Summer 2022 eventually married Gertude Fochtman and they became much admired civic leaders in Petoskey. Later, in 1934, Bill opened a highly regarded haberdashery with partner Frank Hoffman, beginning a long tradition of retail excellence.

Maus & Hoffman was incredibly successful and the partners became key players in the development of Petoskey's Gaslight District as a premier shopping destination.

In the 1940’s, Bill and Frank went to Florida to see if they could find a spot for the winter months, opening a branch of Maus & Hoffman in Fort Lauderdale. By the late 1940's, this began the trend of shops that summered in Petoskey and wintered in south Florida.

Among the premier shops persuaded to do that were such memorable establishments as Gattle's Linens, Ed Behan's Tweed Shop, Bob Baker Shoes, Harold Grant's and Games Imported. These elegant shops, beloved by Wallooners for so many years, soon found that following their clients north to avoid Florida summers made good sense.

The Maus family lived on Waukazoo Street in Petoskey, but rented on Walloon's South Arm in the summers before buying Mill Pond. The family has fond memories of their beloved home on Mill Pond. As Julie Maus Norcross recounts, “The roof leaked and heat was provided by Franklin stoves and fireplaces. Dad planted vegetable gardens, Mother planted flower boxes and gardens and cooked and cooked. The roof was fixed over time, a furnace was added and the deer ate dad’s vegetables. Mother and Dad and all of us were besotted with this home and in love with the land.” Bill Maus even investigated the growing of rice in the wetlands of Mill Pond - not at all a far-fetched notion, as wild rice was plentiful at one time in Michigan.

Following in the Maus family's mercantile tradition, Julie went on to open acclaimed bookstore McLean & Eakin Booksellers in downtown Petoskey. For the Maus siblings, including Julie, who still lives on Walloon, the memories of those halcyon days on the shores of Mill Pond remain. “We all realized every day how lucky we were,” she smiles.

As idyllic as the Maus family's sojourn on Mill Pond was, inevitably, things changed. “Dad had died unexpectedly in 1980 and upon mother’s death in 2003 the property became ours....siblings Bill Maus, Tom Maus, Jane Hearne, Julie Norcross and John Maus,” explains Julie. “Life changed

5 as the years went by. Our family of five siblings grew to a family of more than 50 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.”

As time went on, taxes rose, the buildings and land required more and more attention and the family had less and less time to devote to its summer home. Eventually the land was subdivided, but happily the main portion of the property was purchased by Jane Maus Hearne and her daughter Bevin.

A sizable amount of acreage, however, still remained.

Because that acreage was zoned for planned development, there was great trepidation among conservationists over the fate of the beautiful and ecologically fragile Mill Pond land. This concern became a call to action for the WLAC. With undeveloped shoreline on Walloon becoming such a rarity, the WLAC directed its organizational focus to preserving the unspoiled splendor of Mill Pond.

“The Conservancy has had its sights on the Mill Pond area of the lake for protection for many decades,” notes WLAC Executive Director Josephine Roberts. “When the opportunity to acquire the Maus shoreline parcels arose, the Land Protection Committee and our Board of Trustees took extraordinary measures to ensure the transaction.”

In order to finance the purchase of this critical natural habitat, the WLAC Board of Trustees opted to take out a loan. “We are currently in the process of raising funds through the Critical Lands Campaign to help pay off this loan,” Josephine adds.

The preservation of 2,117 ft. of precious Walloon shoreline, as well as nearly 39 acres of critically important wetlands, is cause for celebration indeed. “We are so excited for this project,” comments Connor Dennis, Kathy and Bella Kittleson exploring Mill Pond.

Director of Conservation Programs for the WLAC. “It has been years, if not decades, in the making and so many people have put much time and energy into it.”

The WLAC plans to maintain the property, now called the Mill Pond Nature Area, in its pristine natural state. At present, it is only accessible by water via non-motorized watercrafts such as kayaks or paddle boards.

Future plans, according to Connor, may include educational opportunities such as bird hikes with the Audubon Society and vernal pool monitoring.

Amy Klein, WLAC Director of Development and Communications, who grew up visiting the lake nearby, has many fond memories of Mill Pond. “The waters there are crystal clear...but it's almost a different world when you paddle back there, with beautiful aquatic plants, wildlife and such a feeling of serenity.”

WLAC Board Member and conservationist Russ Kittleson agrees. “There is much aquatic plant growth to be seen there, including both American white water lily and yellow flowered pond lily. The water is so clear you can often see fish swimming by.

The beauty of Mill Pond is that it has not changed much in 50 years.”

Keeping that beauty intact is a culmination of effort of a host of individuals. As Josephine concludes, “This precious, undeveloped shoreline project could not have been completed without the support of so many people.”

The acquisition of the Mill Pond property is a story with a happy ending - a heartwarming story indeed of many people working together to ensure that this very special place will remain protected for generations to come.

A

myriad of architectural styles are wonderfully reflected in the classic cottages of Walloon. These lovely vintage cottages, which can be found all over the lake, are unquestionably an integral part of Walloon’s rich history.

Many are still used as the family’s main residence while others serve as a guest cottage or have been creatively expanded with additions.

Whatever the iteration, the preservation of these picturesque cottages is key to Walloon’s legacy, and something to be celebrated.

As we continue this “Classic Cottages of Walloon” series, we are looking for more examples of classic cottages to include in our inventory. For purposes of this series we are defining classic cottages as those with architectural or local historic interest, preferably built before 1950.

GRACE COTTAGE

STEVE & JOANNE VIROSTEK, OWNERS

Longfield Farm Trail Perched high on a scenic bluff with a glorious view of the lake, “Grace Cottage” is a marvelous example of a beautifully preserved classic Walloon cottage. It was originally the studio and private retreat of the artistically gifted Grace Hall Hemingway, mother of Ernest, and a talented painter and musician. In 1908 Grace purchased the picturesque 40-acre Longfield Farm, directly across the lake from Windemere, the family cottage. Grace designed the cottage and had it built by Dwight Sumner in 1919. After purchasing the property in 2013, Joanne and Steve Virostek did a thoughtful restoration of the studio, maintaining its exposed beams, narrow staircase, hardwood floors and windows while adding a fieldstone fireplace. They now use it as a charming guest cottage, complete with a vintage red barn behind it.

HEISEL HOUSE

HUGH & JULIE HEISEL SULLIVAN, OWNERS

Indian Garden Road Built in 1905, this lovely Victorian was once described in a vintage ad as one of the “finest residences on the lake” and it maintains that distinction today. Constructed by Emma Singer for her son Frank Baker, this picturesque dwelling was once a spacious farmhouse with fields and barns around it. Often called the “Singer Estate”, it was eventually sold to R.E. McCarthy of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Since 1971, this stunning house with its expansive porches and Victorian turret has been the cherished residence of the Heisel family. A noted conservationist and philanthropist who sadly passed away recently, Dr. Bill Heisel was a leader in efforts to maintain the beauty of Walloon. Today the lovely house, surrounded by verdant trees, is owned by his daughter Julie Heisel Sullivan and husband Hugh Sullivan.

MYRTLE BEECH

JAKE & REBECCA GROVE, OWNERS

Forest Lane Named for the plants and trees around it, this classic cottage called “Myrtle Beech” was purchased from the Harris/McGee family by Wallooners Jake and Rebecca Grove. Neighborhood history suggests it was built by the Batcheller brothers who marketed much of the Wildwood Harbor area around 1907, and was first owned by a tailor from Chicago.

The Hemingways came to this area before they purchased Windermere, and legend has it that Grace Hemingway would serenade cottagers from the lake. Nestled in a snug corner of Forest Lane, this beautifully preserved cottage has an impressive staircase and expansive wraparound porch that offers panoramic views of lovely Wildwood Harbor.

BAKER COTTAGE

LORENZO & JAN BAKER, OWNERS

Country Club Shores In 1932, professional photographer Lorenzo Baker of Columbus, OH, acquired a fishing cabin on Walloon in exchange for some photographic portraits. His wife Helen was a bit dismayed by the arduous journey north to find the cottage, but eventually it became the family’s beloved summer home. Later in the 1940’s, Helen made significant improvements to the cottage with the help of local craftsman Burt Burns.

Now 90 years after that unique trade made by his grandfather, Lorenzo Baker III and wife Jan still own this picturesque cottage, maintaining a remarkable family legacy on the lake. In 2008 Lorenzo and Jan renovated the second floor and added a porch, taking great care to preserve the ambiance of the original cottage, acquired in that brilliant trade.

ROBERTS COTTAGE

JACK ROBERTS, OWNER

Lake Grove Trail This picturesque log home is one of three built around 1922 in the historic neighborhood of Lake Grove Trail, formerly known as Indiana Avenue, near the site of the old Baer’s Den Hotel. Among the early owners of these log homes were members of the Dyer, Cleveland and Kidd families. Jack & Stevie Robertsbought the Dyer cottage in 2001 from Pat Kidd Bergin. Originally a simple summer cabin, Jack, who sadly recently passed away, renovated the cottage by adding a basement as well as an expansive addition that included bathrooms and a large kitchen. The renovated house beautifully evokes the rustic appeal of Walloon’s traditional log cabin style.

DEAN COTTAGE

CRAIG & KELLY MULLANEY DEAN, OWNERS

South Shore Drive While visiting family on Walloon, Kelly and Craig fell in love with this beautifully preserved cottage for sale. In order to be the selected bidders, they had to write a letter to owners Elaine and Smokey Daniels about their plans for the beloved cottage and be approved! Happily, Kelly and Craig were successful as they were committed to preserving the original charming cottage. Known originally as the “Medicine Men Cottage,” it is believed to have been built around 1899, making it one of the oldest on the lake. The Deans added a foundation and restored the interior beadboard, one board at a time. The interior now showcases the handsome stone fireplace in the great room. A new addition behind the cottage meets the needs of their family while still maintaining the home’s vintage character.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR FRIENDS AT TIP OF THE MITT WATERSHED COUNCIL

Clean Water

A

s fellow lake enthusiasts, I am sure by now you know the threat that aquatic invasive species pose to the health and wellbeing of Walloon Lake. The two main species of concern are zebra mussels and Eurasian watermilfoil (EWM). The WLAC treats annually for EWM, so please be on the lookout for permission requests as summer begins and the survey and treatment schedules are set.

But treatment is only part of the solution…prevention is also key to limiting the spread of invasives into and out of Walloon.

As part of our prevention strategy, we are installing two waterless, permanent boat wash units called CD3s (short for “Clean, Drain, Dry, Dispose”) this summer. One will be located at Jones Landing on the North Arm and the other will be at the Sumner Road Boat Launch. Additionally, we have new signage going up all around the lake.

In 2019, it became a Michigan state law that all boaters must “ensure the watercraft, trailer, and any conveyance used to transport the watercraft or trailer are free of aquatic organisms, including plants.” In order to help boaters follow this regulation, we felt it necessary to provide a means by which to clean their boats before and after each use.

We are excited and hopeful that all boaters will take time to help limit the spread of aquatic invasives, and we are doing our part by giving them the opportunity to do so.

Walloon Lake is very fortunate to be dealing with only two major aquatic invasive species. It is our hope that with prevention and treatment we can both lower the amount of EWM currently present and prevent other invasives from taking hold.

I would like to take a moment to thank our partners at Bear Creek Township, Bay Township, Charlevoix County Community Foundation, Land Trust Alliance, and the Petoskey Harbor Springs Community Foundation for their funding and support of this initiative.

Boating is an important part of Northern Michigan culture. There are so many ways to enjoy our beautiful waters: fishing, relaxing with family on a pontoon, sailing, or navigating a kayak down a pristine river. However, humans aren’t the only ones who enjoy boating. Aquatic invasive species (AIS) that can hitch rides on boat hulls and trailers, such as zebra mussels, find our love of water very handy when it comes to spreading from lake to lake. AIS are species that can drastically change a lake’s ecosystem, displace native species, degrade water quality, and introduce harmful pathogens into our waters.

Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council and Walloon Lake Association and Conservancy are working to protect Walloon Lake from aquatic species that can cause economic and ecological damage.

Fortunately, a little time and elbow grease can prevent the spread of AIS from lake to lake. Tiny fragments of Eurasian watermilfoil can easily grow into huge colonies when transported to new bodies of water, and zebra mussels love to cling to boat hulls and trailers. Other invasive species, such as round gobies, can spread through improperly disposed of bait fish. That’s why Clean, Drain, Dry, and Dispose principles are so important. High-powered sprayers from boat-washing stations can clean off plant fragments and aquatic animals, and mats to collect and dispose of aquatic invaders are a great way to maintain the health of Walloon Lake for everyone’s enjoyment. A boat wash before entering Walloon Lake can prevent the spread of more invasive species to the lake, and a wash after exiting the lake can keep boaters from spreading zebra mussels and Eurasian watermilfoil to other areas. Dispose of unused bait in the trash, and help keep invasive fish from colonizing Walloon Lake.

MOVE YOUR WAKE RESPECT THE LAKE

O

ne thing we all have in common as Wallooners is our love for recreational water sports and the lake. Whether it’s skiing, surfing, tubing, fishing or just taking a cruise, we want to be out there enjoying the water. As Walloon becomes more and more popular (unfortunately the secret is out), it is becoming imperative that we recreate responsibly and respectfully in order to maintain a safe and healthy lake environment.

A recent study from the University of Minnesota delved into the topic of wake waves created by wakesurf boats and recreational ski boats. Included were measurements of wave height, power and energy at four different distances from the shoreline (225 feet, 325 feet, 425 feet and 625 feet).

For example, the graph to the right shows the stark difference between the two recreational boats and two wakesurfing boats studied in relation to wave power.

The research found that wakesurf boats were capable of creating much larger and more powerful waves than recreational ski boats, especially when being operated at slower, “sub-planing” speeds. These findings should come as no huge surprise though as wakesurf boats are intentionally designed to create large waves and be used in this, sub-planing condition. It is important to note that the ski boats tested also generated large waves at lower speeds, but this usage is much more limited (typically only during acceleration/deceleration). Overall, the study found that the further away from shore that boats were operated, the more waves dissipated by the time they hit the shoreline. With these results, researchers determined the suggested distance from shorelines for wakesurf usage

is at least 425-500 feet and 200 feet for other recreational boating.

In line with the University of Minnesota study findings, Endicott (Cotty) M. Fay, a chief naval architect, also further researched the impact of wakesurfing waves in relation to water depth. It was determined that wakesurfing in a depth of at least 10 feet minimizes the wave impact on shorelines and water bottoms.

These studies prompted the WLAC Safety Committee and Board of Trustees to put forth a new recommendation: while actively wakesurfing/boarding, please maintain a minimum distance of 425 feet from the shoreline AND a minimum depth of 15 feet.

Although this is not an enforceable policy, we hope that Wallooners will choose areas

on the water that are more appropriate for use out of respect for one another and the health of the lake. Just remember, more distance from the shoreline equals less damage to Walloon.

The lake is a shared resource and your cooperation and courtesy will go a long way to help your neighbors enjoy the water in the same way you do. Please join us in pledging to Move Your Wake, Respect the Lake this summer!

NATURE VIA WATER

MILL POND NATURE AREA

When many people think of viewing a pristine wildlife habitat on Walloon Lake, Mill Pond at the top of the West Arm is often first to come to mind. The Mill Pond Nature Area has been one of our most recent protection efforts, and we now protect 38 acres of hardwood conifer forest, mixed hardwood swamp and over 2,100 feet of natural shoreline. This preserve acts as a habitat for many different forms of wildlife due to its diversity in natural communities. For many Wallooners, the overnight camping excursion on this land during Camp Daggett’s Summer Program is fondly remembered, and it is a tradition that will still carry on under our care. While we do not allow camping or land access to the general public, this property may be viewed from the water from the water and can best be enjoyed via kayak or paddle board.

hether you live here year-round or you are only up for a couple of weeks, it is likely that all of us will be in the water at some point this summer. Our attraction to Walloon’s blue-green beauty is aided by the help of three major tributaries filtering water into the lake. These tributaries would not be as effective today without the accomplishment of multiple land protection projects throughout our organization’s history. In addition to protection, we have gained many opportunities researching and monitoring their water quality and habitats. Let’s take a moment to highlight and learn more about our key water-bound nature areas that can be accessed and viewed around the lake.

SCHOOF’S CREEK NATURE AREA

If you are looking for a fun-filled water adventure, look no further than journeying up Schoof’s Creek, located at the tip of the North Arm. This 153-acre nature area was formed through two land acquisition projects from 1994 to 1996. The entire area is a delineated wetland and creates the ultimate water buffer for the hilly agricultural areas that lie north of the lake. This preserve acts as a habitat for muskrats, otters, turtles, great blue heron, kingfishers, wood ducks and several other species of birds. Within this nature area, a section of Schoof's Creek, just over a half-mile long, allows paddlers the opportunity to adventure upstream.

SHADOW TRAILS NATURE AREA

The cozy South Bay is home to one of Walloon Lake’s most direct inlets, Fineout Creek. This area marks where our organization acquired its first preserve in 1980, the Walloon South Bay Association Preserve. The Shadow Trails Nature Area is a combined 33 acres under one management plan which completely protects the Fineout Creek mouth all the way to the nearest road crossing. Within the lake frontage, critical wetlands and creek beds, this area serves as a habitat for beavers, bald eagles, waterfowl and a variety of fish species. While the creek itself does not provide a long trip, it is a pleasant area to kayak or paddle for viewing wildlife and taking in some of our most pristine natural communities.

By giving, you are joining your neighbors and friends in directly supporting our programming - ranging from water quality testing to trail maintenance - and ensuring that the land and water of Walloon are protected.

Have you considered the Walloon Lake Association and Conservancy when addressing estate planning? By doing so, you are creating a legacy on Walloon and ensuring it is preserved for generations to come. Making a bequest to the WLAC in your will or trust allows for greater flexibility as changes can be made at any time, has no impact on your current income and may help reduce taxes on your estate.

GIFTS OF LAND

An asset you’ve had for generations can be a gift for generations to come. By donating all or part of your property to the WLAC, you may be able to reduce your capital gains tax, receive an income tax deduction and you may even be able to continue to use or live on the property through a life estate arrangement. Best of all, your gift will support vital conservation work.

Lands that are not critical to wildlife, but are none-the-less valuable properties, may be sold and the proceeds used to pay for other conservation work.

Ellis Woods

hose of you that live in the Shadow Trails area are probably familiar with our Ellis Woods Preserve. It is an 82-acre natural area consisting of rolling hills and a hardwood forest that sets a beautiful backdrop for the neighborhood and provides an amazing water quality buffer for the South Arm. In the fall of 2021, lifelong Wallooner Tim Manchester reached out to the organization with the opportunity to purchase 35 acres directly adjacent to the Ellis Woods Preserve at a significantly discounted cost to the WLAC. The organization’s Land Protection Committee approved the project, and it was unanimously supported by the Board of Trustees.

Now it was on to fundraising for the project!

The WLAC has a strong history of neighborhood fundraising campaigns and this project was prime for a grassroots initiative. Sally Swanson, an Ellis Woods neighbor, graciously offered to spearhead this and quickly got to work writing letters and reaching out to nearby residents of the preserve. To say she was successful is an understatement. Sally was able to help fundraise for the entire purchase price in just a few weeks! We would like to take this time to acknowledge Tim Manchester and Sally Swanson for their commitment and generosity to the WLAC and thank all of the neighbors below who supported the campaign. This project is so reminiscent of how this organization got its start and how our members are so vital to our mission of protecting this area we love.

OVER A CENTURY ON WALLOON The Wilhoit/Ice/Smith Family

ike many other families, it was a honeymoon that first brought the remarkable Wilhoit/Ice/Smith family to Walloon. This honeymoon, however, took place more than 125 years ago, when businessman and banker Charles Wilhoit, Sr. brought his bride Louise Wisehart via train from Middletown, Indiana to Petoskey in 1896.

Already in love with each other, they soon fell in love with the Petoskey area, buying land and building a cottage on what is now Lake Grove Road. The area was not only beautiful, the pure air of Walloon was also good for Charles’s hay fever and asthma.

Traveling to Walloon was a bit challenging in those days. First, they took an overnight train from Indiana to Petoskey, then transferred to the local train called the “Dummy” which took them to the Walloon Village at the foot. From the Village, the Wilhoits and their children loaded all their trunks on that most famous of Walloon passenger boats, the Tourist, for the final part of their journey to the West Arm. The Tourist stopped at the landing of the very popular Lake Grove Hotel, and from there the family walked to their nearby cottage.

Later in 1907, preferring a lakefront that was lower and closer to the water, the Wilhoits built a different cottage nearby on what is now known as Lake Grove Trail, formerly called In-

diana Avenue. They still took the Tourist to their cottage, but now they would disembark at the Baer’s Den Hotel landing instead. It is this new cottage, humorously dubbed “Nod-a-Way” by Charles, that has remained in the family for 115 years and six generations.

The Wilhoits’ daughter Catharine, a teacher, married Trammel Ice, a farmer from Mt. Summit, Indiana, and continued the Walloon tradition. Catharine and Trammel had a son, Richard, and daughter, Barbara. When Richard was in England serving in WWII, he fell in love with a petite, vivacious young lady named Joan Matthews from Devon, England, and promptly asked her to marry him. Joan came to America on the Queen Elizabeth, and married Richard in

The Wallooner | Summer 2022 a double wedding with Richard’s sister Barbara and her fiancé Phillip Smith, also a WWII veteran. In 1947, Joan made her first visit to Walloon, and immediately fell in love with that, too.

Richard and Joan went on to enjoy a rich, fulfilling life in Indiana, always punctuated with visits to the family cottage, Nod-a-Way. Richard, who earned a degree in agriculture from Purdue, had an impressive career in farming and as an inspector with the Indiana State Department of Health; Joan served as a teacher’s aide while raising their family. Although Richard’s agricultural work kept him extremely busy, his annual sojourn at Walloon — taken for 92 summers — was always the highlight of his year.

Together Richard and Joan had three children, Jennifer, Joe and Jill, and enjoyed a 75-year marriage that only ended last fall with Richard’s death at age 98.

Meanwhile, Richard’s sister Barbara and husband Phillip both went on to distinguished careers, living overseas for many years. Phillip was an official with the U.S. Agency for International Development while Barb was an elementary teacher and administrator, serving as a principal in Brazil and Virginia. Although their careers took them to Bolivia, Brazil, Nepal, Columbia and Peru, the one constant in their life was always Walloon. Eventually, Barb and Phil decided they needed a place of their own on the lake and in 1965 purchased a cottage three doors north of Nod-a-Way on Lake Grove Trail, which served as their main residence for many years and remained in the family until 2013.

Over the years, the family, which included their three children Scott, Deby, and Trammel, bought land and two other cottages on Lake Grove Trail. These included the Ratliff cottage and 47 acres of land on both sides of Lake Grove Road, which they purchased in 1978.

They built a year-round house on the site of the Ratliff cottage and made some of the land available to nearby cottagers. Scott and his wife Dibby currently live in this house, three doors south of Nod-a-Way. Education and public service have long been the hallmark of careers in the Wilhoit/Ice/ Smith family. Joe Ice and Jill Ice Cook, and their late sister Jennifer Ice Bell were all teach-

13 ers, continuing the family tradition begun by their grandmother Catharine. Their cousin Scott Smith worked with the federal Agency for International Development in designing agriculture, education, health and disaster relief programs.

Always interested in environmental programs, Scott also worked for The Nature Conservancy and served as a board member of the Walloon Lake Trust and Conservancy. In 2017, Scott was awarded the Damschroder Award by the WLTC. Scott’s sister Deby Smith Armstrong was a nursing instructor while his brother Trammel Smith worked as a recruiter for defense/ intelligence agencies.

Sadly Phil passed away in 2007, and Barbara in 2011. Before she passed away, however, Barbara chronicled her family’s remarkable history on Walloon and her fascinating life abroad in a book of memoirs entitled We Took the High Road. This book includes a captivating record of the complete Wilhoit-Ice-Smith family history and daily life on Walloon.

Today Joan Ice, the last of that great generation of the Ice family, is a spunky nonagenarian with a twinkle in her eye who still loves spending time in that 1907 family cottage, serving as the keeper of all those heartwarming family memories. Standing in front of the picturesque old stone fireplace in the cottage she noted “I actually remember when this fireplace was built

by George Depew with stones from the lake.”

There have been various additions to the cottage, but today the original house is still very recognizable. Today siblings Joe Ice and Jill Ice Cook own Nod-A-Way. Cherished for 115 years, Nod-A-Way has been home to six generations of the Wilhoit/ Ice/Smith family, many of whom never missed a summer on the lake. As Barbara notes in her book, “How we love Walloon — all the great times we had in the four cottages on Lake Grove Trail that we did live in...we sure enjoyed living our lives in Michigan on Walloon more than any other place in the world!”

THE CROOKED TREE DISTRICT LIBRARY A Walloon Lake Treasure

T

ucked away on a quiet street in the Village of Walloon is a very special place just waiting to be discovered...

Officially named the Crooked Tree District Library (CTDL), but known more informally as the Walloon Library, this is a bright, airy spot filled with literary delights.

Libraries all across the country, including Walloon's, are more important than ever, bringing patrons a myriad of both print and electronic resources while serving as a center of community life.

Founded by a group of dedicated lake and township residents in 1972, the Walloon Library traveled to various rented spaces around the Village before finding a permanent home in a beautiful new building at 2203 Walloon Street. This picturesque building was made possible by a donation of more than $400,000 from the foundation of the beloved philanthropist and lifelong Wallooner Mary Kent Peabody.

A fundraising campaign to raise an additional $250,000 for the endowment fund was spearheaded by the newly founded Friends of the Library, under presidents Sue Barr, Cindy Young and Bunny Marquardt. The extraordinary level of support that the Walloon library enjoys is indeed a heartwarming testament to the community's love of literacy. These combined efforts culminated in the opening of the new library in 2000.

The Friends continue to raise an impressive amount of money for the library, notes current president Martha Coscina, mainly through the annual Library Lovers' Dinner at Walloon Lake Country Club, scheduled this year for August 30. They also sell many Walloon-themed items, such as the Walloon, Walloon, Walloon art print, wooden puzzles of

lake scenes, tiles and notecards. Also still for sale is Walloon Yesterdays, the quintessential Walloon history book written by the Friends' own Cynny Hermann and Mary Erb. The library offers a plethora of services according to director Leanne Milliman, in addition to loaning books. "We have computers and printers available as well as free WiFi and offer many digital resources. We also do puzzle exchanges, used book sales and host Michigan Notable Authors." Mahjong players, a knitting group and the Walloon book club also meet at the library.

The bright, sunny children’s corner, and the cozy fireplace nook are some of the inviting areas inside the Walloon Library. The library is open Monday through Thursday and on Saturday.

Do you have children or grandchildren staying in your cottage this summer? The library's inviting corner for children, with its charming mural by local artist Martina Hahn, is the ideal place for them! Children can participate in the summer reading program and find a variety of resources to keep them amused throughout their time at Walloon.

Although anyone can visit the Walloon Library, you do need a library card if you wish to check out materials. Wallooners who live in Melrose Township should obtain their card at the Walloon Library. If you live in other areas of the lake and have a card from either the Petoskey or Boyne City Library you may also check out items at Walloon.

Simply go to North Shore Drive, turn on Bullock Street, then turn right on Walloon Street and you will immediately see the library. "We really want people to know that we are here for them!" smiles Leanne.

SANDRA ANN ANDREWS November 19, 1938 - March 2, 2022 Sandra Ann Andrews (nee Rusinko) of Walloon Lake and Boyne City/West Bloomfield, Michigan passed away March 2, 2022.

Sandra was born on November 19, 1938, to Michael and Egla Rusinko in Cleveland, Ohio. She attended Holy Name High School in Cleveland, Ohio, followed by receiving a bachelors degree from Ohio University 1960, and Masters Degree from the University of Michigan 1969. Her professional life spanned 43 years as a teacher and counselor in Walled Lake schools. She was honored to be elected Walled Lake Education Asso-

ciation President; she was active in the teachers’ union as a contract negotiator. Sandra sponsored the Walled Lake Western High School class of 1982, was instrumental in bringing boys hockey to Walled Lake Schools, sponsored National Honor Society at WLW, and was the Michigan PTA Educator of the year for 1999-2000.

On October 26, 1963, she married Donald John at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Parma, Ohio. Sandra, a devout parishioner, was a long-standing member of St. William Parish in Walled Lake, Michigan. She never missed an opportunity to dedicate her talents as a school counselor to grant compassion with a listening ear or a guiding voice. Sandra treasured her summers spent on Walloon Lake (Willowloon) and welcomed many friends and family into her home. Trips around the world were always on

Sandra’s list of fun things to do, right behind her passion for Days of Our Lives. Sandra was devoted to her family and nothing brought her joy like spending time with them for special events and holidays, especially the annual Feast of St. Tubbo de Pasta Maria. Her passing has left a void in the hearts of all who knew her, and she will be greatly missed by her loving family and dear friends.

Sandra was predeceased by her late husband of 40 years, Donald John Andrews; her mother, Egla Rusinko and father, Michael Rusinko.

Sandra is survived by her two sons Donald John II (Brook) and Michael Benjamin (Elena); by her three grandchildren Emma, Leah, and Anthony. Sandra is also survived by her sister, Carole Boyd and her brother, David Rusinko, and many nieces and nephews.

EDWARD FRANCIS CASTLEBERRY September 22, 1931 – March 17, 2022 Edward “Hap” Castleberry, beloved husband of deceased Susan Jane (nee Siddall) Castleberry. Son of dearly beloved John and Constance (nee Alf) Castleberry (deceased). Dear father of Kelly Castleberry of Missoula, Montana; Anne Castleberry, Bizzy (Martin) Driscoll, and Christine (Wayne) Lippert of Cincinnati. Loving grandfather of Kathleen and Clare Castleberry; Margaret, Bryant and Andrew Pund; Jacob and Lauren Driscoll; Lily, Holland and Trey Lippert. Brother of Connie (John) Sullivan of Ft. Wright, KY, brother of John “Jack” Castleberry, Jr (deceased) and Romola “NoNo” Allen of Cincinnati.

Hap attended The Summit Country Day School, graduated high school from Cincinnati Country Day School, graduated with a BA

from Brown University and received his MBA from Xavier University. He was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.

Hap’s mother and father instilled in him a hard work ethic, to believe in your passions and to give back to your community. Hap helped run the family business, Cedar Hill Farms Inc, a local dairy until it was sold in 1963. He started his career as entrepreneur in 1964. He proceeded to start and to purchase small businesses to grow and to develop. He successfully commanded, developed and sold more than twelve local companies in his career.

(US Building Services, Inc, Coffee Break, Inc, Art Guild Book Bindery, Inc, Ohio Building Services, Inc, Ohio Coffee Services, Inc, E.F. Castleberry & Assoc, Inc, Imperial Adhesives, Inc, T-Shirt City, U.S Abatement Co.) He was very civic minded, and Hap volunteered, supported and marshaled by example over fifteen non-profits, business and academic organizations in Cincinnati. Founder of the Greater

Cincinnati Business Hall of Fame was one of his favorite accomplishments. He delighted in helping young boys and girls learn business skills through Junior Achievement of Greater Cincinnati. Hap was a member of the Republican Party and supported the endeavors of the Hamilton County office.

When he wasn’t working or volunteering, you could find him playing tennis at the Cincinnati Tennis Club, The Indoor Tennis Club, the Cincinnati Country Club, The Racquet Club or clubs around Cincinnati, Florida and Michigan. His passion for tennis reaped many rewarding and longtime friendships, and hundreds of Winning Trophies; too many to count!

He especially enjoyed spending his winters at The Ocean Reef Club and his summers on Walloon Lake with his grandchildren. His mother gave him the nickname “Happy” as a child, but he garnered the name “Hap” by his positive and friendly manner. He tried to create “Hap”iness wherever he hung his hat.

18 STEPHEN SLONEKER MARCUM October 28, 1957 – April 11, 2022 Stephen Sloneker Marcum was born October 28, 1957, in Hamilton, Ohio, to the late Sarah and Joe Marcum. Stephen, 64, died at home on Monday, April 11, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. Stephen had a lifelong love of music, art, and doodling.

He created wonderful works of art that are trea-

sured family heirlooms and delighted all with his various piano pieces. He was even in a band called, “OC and the Casual T’s.” They played on the Courthouse lawn, Stephen on the standup bass, Joe Marcum on the piano and Madalyn Lester on the drums. Great fun. Stephen was a devoted husband, father, businessman and community volunteer. He graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1980, Where he fell in love with Trudy McGraw, and they were happily married in January of 1981. They moved to Dayton where Stephen attended the University of Day-

ton School of Law. He graduated in 1983 and moved With his family to Hamilton. Stephen was an excellent attorney with Parrish, Marcum, and Trokhan in Hamilton, Ohio. Stephen is survived by his loving wife, Trudy, and four children, Matthew, Joe, Emma, and Annie (Jon Miller}, and two grandchildren, Lulu Miller and Alfie Miller. Also surviving Stephen are his caring sisters, Cam (Jeff) Lowe, Christy (Mike) Manchester, and Jenny (Milton) Shuffield. And he will be together again with his brother, Joseph Timothy, who passed in 1973.

LESTER A. HOEL February 26, 1935 – April 19, 2022 Lester A. Hoel died peacefully on April 19, 2022 in San Francisco. He was born during the Great Depression on February 26, 1935 to Norwegian immigrants, Johannes and Julie Hoel. He liked to joke that nobody “planned” to have children at that time and benefited greatly as part of the “scarce generation”.

Lester believed in education—for himself and others. Education allowed him to rise out of the Brooklyn tenement where he grew up to become one of the world’s foremost authorities on public transportation. He attended Brooklyn Technical High School, City College of New York, Polytechnic Institute of New York (now NYU), and the University of California at Berkeley (where he earned his Doctorate). He believed “a winner never quits and a quitter never wins” which enabled him to embrace any task enthusiastically. He was also known for saying, “If it is worth doing at all, it is worth doing well.”

Lester had a long and distinguished career as an educator and researcher. He was the L.A. Lacy Distinguished Professor of Engineering and served as the Director of Transportation Studies at the University of Virginia. From 1974 to 1989, he served as Chairman of the Department of Civil Engineering. Prior to Virginia, Lester was Professor of Civil Engineering and Associate Director of the Transportation Research Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. He retired in 2009 at the age of 74.

Lester was a prolific and influential writer in his field. He pioneered research that would influence the future of highway transportation.

He wrote hundreds of papers and co-authored popular textbooks. Traffic and Highway Engineering and Transportation Infrastructure Engineering, A Multimodal Integration are staples in graduate and undergraduate university courses in transportation engineering. Through his “Professional Program in Urban Transportation”, Lester traveled the world, studying the transportation systems of Paris, London, Munich, Stockholm, Montreal, and more. His research and influence as a national authority have led to safer, more sustainable transportation systems to move people and connect communities throughout the world.

Lester received numerous awards, including a Fulbright Fellowship which allowed him to teach in his beloved Norway. At 54 years old, he became a member of the prestigious National Academy of Engineering, an honor earned for “outstanding contributions and leadership to urban public transportation research and education”. He was the first professor at the University of Virginia to receive the distinction while on the faculty. He was elected “Distinguished Member” of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)—one of only 200 members out of a membership of over 150,000. His office wall was covered with framed awards and plaques, a deep source of pride and humility that comes from a lifelong commitment to hard work.

Lester loved his violin and could play any song by ear. Fritz Kreisler and The Statler Brothers were his favorites, as he was passionate about both classical and country music. He loved playing duets with his piano playing friends. David McCullough, author of The Wright Brothers, The Paths Between the Seas, and The Great Bridge, was both his favorite author and friend, as he was passionate about the history of transportation.

Lester was a loyal member of The Rotary Club in both Charlottesville and St. Helena. He began

life as a Brooklyn Dodgers fan and later became a San Francisco Giants fan, and would never forget the day when he watched Matt Cain pitch a no-hitter in 2014. He believed in living “one day at a time” and practiced yoga and meditation each morning. He also enjoyed playing tennis and had a knack for hitting the ball to his opponent where it was just out of reach.

Lester truly loved and was loved by his friends, family, and students. He liked to connect deeply in conversation. He is remembered for his fantastic smile, amazing attitude, and wisdom.

He continues to share that wisdom with the world with his book, I’ll Have to Remember That: Ten Ideas for Living. He loved to tell young people, “If you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there” and believed, “A soft answer will turn away anger.”

Lester moved with his beloved wife, Unni, to St. Helena, California to be closer to family in 2009, leaving Charlottesville, VA and Duck, NC behind. In 2016, he moved to the San Francisco Towers and spent the last few summers on Walloon Lake in Northern Michigan. In 1992, Lester survived quadruple bypass heart surgery and, thanks to his amazing medical team, the world got 30 more years with him.

Lester is survived by his wife of 63 years, Unni, his three daughters, Julie Bryan, Sonja Perkins, and Lisa Rafael, and his son-in-law, Jon Perkins. He was “Bestefar” to his four grandchildren, Tyler, Emma, and Jordan Rafael, and Jack Perkins. He is also survived by his nieces and nephew, Debbie Wasserman, Lauren O’Neill, and John Lester Dawson—the children of his beloved sister Maureen who passed away too early in 1977. His mother, Julie, who called him “Lester Darling,” and father, John, passed away long ago. Lester’s legacy lives on through all of the people whose lives he touched.

CARLIE ELLEN BROMAN STEELE Passed away on February 22, 2022 Carlie Ellen Broman Steele passed away peacefully at the age of 90 in Dunedin, Florida, on February 22, 2022.

She was born in Petoskey, Michigan, the daughter of Ranghild and Arthur Broman. Carlie graduated from Petoskey High School and Western Michigan University, then began her days working at Detroit’s Ford Motor Company.

She was a secretary in the styling department at Chrysler when a friend popped his head into her office and said, “I know a fella

who wants to meet you.” Bob Steele, an engineer, had noticed her in the cafeteria. They married and began life together in the suburbs, eventually moving to Birmingham where they raised two children, Susie and Rick, and enjoyed the neighborhood for 32 years. Carlie managed the home, loved gourmet cooking and golfing, and volunteered at church and her children’s schools.

After Bob retired from Chrysler, the couple spent summers in Petoskey and winters in Dunedin, where they ultimately settled and enjoyed entertaining a crew of lively, kind neighbors.

She had many talents in the creative arts, from writing short stories to drawing and painting. She was an avid seamstress; in her

later years, neighbors came to her regularly for alterations and tailoring. She had a sharp eye for antiquing and finding hidden gems at thrift shops. For her grandchildren she crafted dozens of photo albums as the family historian. She was very proud of her Swedish heritage. She lovingly scrapbooked her family’s achievements, carefully clipping out newspaper articles and documenting other memorabilia. Carlie will be remembered for her kindness.

Carlie is survived by her husband of 64 years, Bob Steele; sister Janet Van Lente (Petoskey, MI, and Nokomis, FL); daughter Susan (Steele) and Jere L’Heureux (Grand Rapids, MI); son Richard and Wendy Steele (Clearwater, FL); and grandchildren Catie, Brian, Brooke, Jacob, Stephen, Alex, and Hailey.

sports, Boy Scouts and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. After high school, Jim attended General Motors Institute (now Kettering), earning a B.S in Industrial Engineering then went on to earn both an MBA and MS in Engineering from the University of Michigan.

He became a lifelong Michigan fan, a passion he passed along to his family.

Jim was a loving, dedicated husband, father, and grandfather whose main life’s purpose was to love God, practice his faith, adore his wife and family, live by example, work hard, play hard, explore and be curious, and to pass along Catholic Christian teachings and values.

In his early adult life, Jim served as a Boy Scout leader. He developed a liking for Jazz which he continued to enjoy throughout his life. Jim and Peg fell in love with Northern Michigan while they were still young parents. They bought their first cottage in Lake City, MI in the early 1970’s and in 1975, purchased the current property on Walloon Lake. The Walloon cottage was a labor of love, built with what Jim liked to call “sweat equity.” They traveled there almost every weekend to enjoy the lake, spend time together with family and friends, and participate in a myriad of activities including snow and water sports. Jim & Peg also traveled the world, taking in all of the sights,

sounds and cuisine. They eventually retired and split their time between Walloon Lake and Fountain Hills, AZ, where they’ve left many close friends and where Jim retained a residence up to his death.

Jim was an early pioneer in the computer field in the 1960’s and had a distinguished career in information technology (IT). He was employed by General Motors (GM) starting with Saginaw Steering Gear Division and rose up to lead their data center.

He then led other global IT departments for GM, including Packard Electric (Warren, OH), the GM Technical Center (Warren, MI), and ultimately became a Vice President of GM leading IT for the Assembly Division (Detroit, MI). He held similar positions at RJR-Nabisco (Winston-Salem, NC), where he served as VP of IT then became Chief Information Officer (CIO). He held several other CIO positions that also encompassed worldwide operations for Treasure Chest Advertising (Glendora, CA), J.I. Case (Racine, WI), Tenneco and Pactiv Corporations (WI and IL). In 2003, Jim was featured on the cover of Information Week magazine where he served as an editor, consistently advising CEOs and Boards on how to improve IT strategy coupled with business-process alignment.

JAMES HATCH August 1, 1938 - May 17, 2022 James L. Hatch (“Jim”), 83, of Petoskey, MI, died peacefully May 17, 2022 in Valparaiso, IN surrounded by his family.

Jim is survived by his daughter, Julie Burk (Dennis), son Michael Hatch (Ellen), sisters: Mary Kotulionus (David) and Anne Campbell (Bill), one brother Greg Hatch, eight grandchildren living around the country: Jordan, Evan and Hanna Merz, Austin J. Hatch (Abby), James P. and Andrew Hatch, Maria Bowersock (Jason), Brittnee Burns (Jared), seven great grandchildren (with one more on the way), many brothers and sisters-in-law, and dozens of nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved.

Jim is preceded in death by the love of his life, wife Margaret A. (“Peg” O’Donnell) Hatch, son Stephen J. Hatch, daughters-inlaw Julie (Siwik) Hatch, Kimberly (Russo) Hatch, Grandchildren Lindsay and Ian Hatch, and Austin T. Neal.

Jim was born on August 1, 1938 in Saginaw, MI, the son of Frances (Schwannecke) and James Hatch, and grew up in Saginaw.

20 JOSEPH BRUBAKER February 1, 1926 - February 27, 2022 Joseph Loren Brubaker, age 96, of Naples, FL and Walloon Lake, MI, formerly Tipp City, OH, passed away in Naples on Sunday, February 27, 2022. Joe was

born in Tipp City, OH on February 1, 1926 to the late Hugh and Rachel (Studebaker) Brubaker. He graduated from Bethel High School and earned his BBA from the Ohio State University.

Joe served in the U.S. Navy as an Officer on the USS Rockbridge. He retired as the President and Owner of H.E. Brubaker Elevators. Joe was a former member of Tipp City Rotary Club, Tipp

City United Methodist Church, Troy Country Club, and Walloon Lake Country Club. He was a Life Master Bridge Player. Joe was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Olive Bradford Brubaker. He is survived by his daughter, Becky (Jim) Coughlin; son, Brad Brubaker (Paul Feakes); grandchildren, Joe Coughlin and Meredith Coughlin; sister, Sue Wunderlich Carroll.

ALICE “JANE” SMITH June 13,1924 - March 2, 2022 Alice “Jane” Smith passed away March 2nd in her sleep and at home, just the way she wanted it to be.

After raising their family in Birmingham, she moved with her husband Al to their Walloon Lake cottage in 1973. It didn’t take long for her to be totally immersed in their new community. They

were great friends to many, became veracious golfers, helped create the Walloon Lake District Library, were active members of First Presbyterian Church of Petoskey, searched out goodies through the Antique club, hunted morel mushrooms with the best of them, was a member of many book and bridge clubs throughout the years, and created a life many people only dream of.

She was a feisty, full of life woman who was always curious about the world around her and would never turn down a good party or bridge

game. The recent political strife in our country upset her greatly and she loved talking politics.

Her smile and laugh were huge trademarks of how much fun she had in life with the people around her. There was rarely a phone call ended without her saying, “be a good girl or boy.”

She is survived by her 3 sons, David (Katherine), Douglas (Christy), Michael (Marcia), 6 grandchildren Jeffry, Sterling, Douglas, Blake, Kelly, and Lindsey and 13 great grandchildren.

JANE FERGER December 1931 - March 4,2022 Jane D. Ferger, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 4, 2022. Jane was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in December of 1931, the daughter of Sam and Jeanette Davis.

She moved to Dayton, Ohio and then to Columbus where Jane graduated from Upper Arlington High School in 1949.

She attended Stephens College and graduated from Denison University in Granville, Ohio, where she was a member of the TriDelta Sorority.

She taught in the Grandview Heights school system before marrying Robert James Curie. They had two children, Robert D. Curie and Christie R. Curie, and resided in Upper Arlington, Ohio.

They were active members at Trinity United Methodist Church, Young President’s Organization and the Rotary Club. Her husband were killed in a tragic airplane crash in 1974 that took the lives of many Columbusites. Jane served on the board of directors of many charitable organizations including Childhood League, the Art Gallery, The Ohio Theater, Riverside Hospital,

and Hannah Neil Home for Children. Following her husband’s death, she served on the board of directors of Liqui-Box Corporation. In 1977 she married Stanley T. Ferger, who had three children, Trevor, Susan, and Steve, and they became dear stepchildren. Stan and Jane met at Ocean Reef, though they were both from Upper Arlington. In Columbus, they were active members of Scioto Country Club and Trinity United Methodist Church. They began to spend their winters in Key Largo, Florida at the Ocean Reef Club, eventually spending summers on Walloon Lake, Michigan where they were members of the Walloon Lake Country Club near Petoskey, Michigan. Jane and Stan had been married for 22 years when Stan passed away in 1999. Jane maintained a residence in Upper Arlington until 2003. Jane met Norman White, originally from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, at Ocean Reef and they married in 2004. They spent ten happy years together. In the latter part of her life, after Norman’s death, Jane served for many years on the board of directors of Habitat for Humanity of the Upper Florida Keys, and she continued to be a generous benefactor of many organizations including Denison University, Stephens College,

the Ocean Reef Medical Center, Baptist Health South Florida, the Ocean Reef Cultural Center, the Ocean Reef Art League, the Protestant Congregation at Ocean Reef, the Walloon Lake Conservancy, Tri Delta, and the McLaren Hospital in Petoskey, Michigan. She is survived by her daughter, Christie (Robert); her stepsons, Trevor Ferger (Pam) and Steve Ferger; and grandchildren, Rob Valdés, J.J. Valdés, Stan Ferger (Courtney), Martha Moriarity (Ryan), Susan Fortune (Casey); and two great-grandchildren, Oscar Ferger and Jack Moriarity. In addition, she is survived by a loving extended family that includes Yvette Valdés Smith (Jake, and step-great-grandchildren, Sebastian and Leo), Nate Zoba (Sheila), Ben Zoba (Christina), and Jon Zoba. She is also survived by her brother, Samuel B. Davis; and her beloved in-laws, John and Linda Curie and Jean Hiatt. Jane loved life and family and her many, many friends. She was the beloved matriarch of an extended, blended family. She enjoyed traveling, playing bridge and Mah Jongg, golf, tennis, fishing, boating, birdwatching, cultivating orchids, entertaining, and socializing at cocktail parties. She took a genuine interest in everyone she was privileged to meet.
