Dear Friends, This summer has been the culmination of many years of hard work and dedication from so many people. We are proud to announce the opening of the Offield Family Pavilion—the new wing that has been under construction for the past three years. The Grand Opening took place on August 6, and patients and staff moved into the building on August 14. We dedicated the Martin and Lisa Sutter North Pavilion and the Offield Family Pavilion with ribbon cuttings, which you can read about on pages 4 and 5.

We also had the opportunity to tour many of our donors through the new facility to show them the plaques honoring them for their generosity. More than 200 people and organizations were honored for their gifts with plaques throughout the building, and a few of them are pictured on page 8.

This year we also had the privilege of honoring three Jack Clark Award recipients.

You can find their photos and descriptions on page 3. We are grateful for their commitment to our hospital through philanthropy, leadership, and service.

The medical staff is settling in and getting familiar with the new technology and equipment in the wing. The halls are already bustling with activity, and the building that so many of you supported is now a place for healing.

We are—as always—amazed by what can be accomplished when passionate community members join together with generosity and kindness. Thank you all for supporting McLaren Northern Michigan.

Honoring Service, Leadership, and Philanthropy 2021 Jack Clark Award Recipients McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation honored Karen DenBesten, MD; Steve Eibling, and Moon Seagren with the Jack Clark Philanthropy and Service Award at a celebration on July 19. The award was presented by Elise Fisher, Chair of the McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation Board of Trustees.

“Traditionally the Jack Clark Award is only given to one person each year,” said Fisher. “But in 2021, we decided there were several individuals we wanted to honor. Each of them has made an incredible impact on McLaren Northern Michigan and our community as a whole.”

Recipients of the Jack Clark Philanthropy and Service Award are nominated by the McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation Board Executive Committee.

“We appreciate all of our Jack Clark Award winners. All of them have supported the work of the hospital and foundation in countless ways—they are examples of dedication, compassion, and service to our patients.”

Karen DenBesten, MD, Infectious Diseases, received the award for service. “Dr. DenBesten has led all of us throughout the pandemic,” said Fisher. “She has been a voice of caution, reason, and expertise, offering ongoing communication and developing protocols to keep patients, staff, and the community safe. We are grateful for her service.”

Longtime member of the McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation Board of Trustees, Steve Eibling, received the award honoring his commitment to philanthropy for the organization. Steve served from 2003 to 2017 and oversaw the disbursement of $25.4 million during his tenure. He steered the Foundation through important financial milestones including the building of the Demmer Wellness Pavilion.

Moon Seagren, former Vice President and Chief Development Officer of McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation, received the award for leadership.

“Moon led the Foundation staff for 20 years. She is a visionary who built this Foundation from a small team into a driving force behind hospital success. She oversaw the growth of the organization, pursuing gifts that enabled her to preside over the disbursement of more than $64 million during her time here,” said Fisher.

About Jack S. Clark The late John S. Clark was an attorney and civic leader.

Born in Bad Axe, Michigan, he practiced law in the Detroit area until moving to Petoskey in 1946 and sat on the Foundation board from 1985 - 2003. His strong sense of civic duty and deep commitment to helping the people in our communities made him a legend to many. McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation was one of many organizations that benefited from his involvement and philanthropic support. Jack’s warm smile, gentle manner, and endless generosity will always be remembered.

A Grand Celebration!

McLaren Northern Michigan celebrates Philanthropy and the opening of the Offield Family Pavilion McLaren Northern Michigan hosted two special events on Friday, August 6. The first event celebrated the naming of the north pavilion entrance in honor of Martin and Lisa Sutter.

The dedication was made in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Sutter for their generous support of McLaren Northern Michigan. The Sutter’s gift will fund future equipment and technology for the McLaren Northern Michigan Petoskey Campus.

“Northern Michigan is a magical place made even more special by the exceptional care offered at McLaren Northern Michigan,” Martin Sutter said. “Lisa and I have been supporters of the hospital since 2002. We strongly feel that it is the most important entity to support in northern Michigan.”

The dedication was followed by a community celebration and ribbon cutting marking the completion of the Offield Family Pavilion. The expansion offers 92 new private rooms, new operating suites, as well as new intensive care, cardiovascular and medical/surgical units with state-of-the-art smart technology.

McLaren Northern Michigan officially broke ground on its new 182,000 square foot wing on July 11, 2018. The $158 million expansion and renovation project transforms the care provided in northern Michigan by increasing patient comfort and privacy, improving wayfinding, enhancing physician and staff work-flow and efficiency, and modernizing the facility to match its world-class care.

The new wing is named the Offield Family Pavilion after a lead donation from The Offield Family Foundation spearheaded

by Harbor Springs residents and capital campaign co-chairs, Jim and sujo Offield. The Offield family has had a long legacy, both of supporting and utilizing the hospital, dating back to its beginning.

“My grandfather was one of the hospital’s original founders and my father served on the hospital board for many years,” Jim Offield said.

An Artistic View Original artwork sets the tone for a healing environment Art is one of many design features in the new facility chosen for the positive impact it will have on all who work, visit, or receive care here. In a health care setting, viewing art offers a positive distraction from worries, fears, and pain; provides comfort by depicting familiar and beloved places and pastimes; causes positive measurable changes in blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, respiration rate, cortisol levels, and brain activity.

The art installation in the new wing was selected for therapeutic properties and includes over 200 pieces purchased and donated from Michigan artists. Many local donors also directed their gifts to fund the purchase of art for the building.

McLaren Northern Michigan partnered with Crooked Tree Arts Center to connect with artists and also received support from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, administered by the Northwest Michigan Arts and Culture Network.

April Wagner’s hot sculpted glass installation, Longshore Current, which hangs from the ceiling in the main concourse area of the new wing, was generously donated in memory of Mary Fran Kolp by her friends and family.

Explore the Offield Family Pavilion Our new wing opened for patients on August 14. See what's inside.

The Offield Family Pavilion features 10 new and much larger Operating Rooms (ORs).

Each room is equipped with 4K technology that offers four times the resolution of HD and provides surgeons with superior image detail and clarity. Streaming options give surgeons access to worldwide experts if desired. Ceiling mounted booms keep equipment nearby and floors clear. The ORs are located next to the new sterile processing department, creating efficiencies for both areas.

The Offield Family Pavilion is an incredible new addition to the Petoskey Campus of McLaren Northern Michigan. With 182,000 square feet of space, this wing offers 104 new private patient rooms, 10 new operating rooms, and enhanced technology throughout.

Heather Lewis, RN, stands in the new Cardiovascular Unit in a private patient room overlooking Little Traverse Bay. All patient rooms now have Stryker iBeds, which are customizable, including safety alarms for every patient condition to prevent injury.

The bedside tablet in each private patient room is one of the features of the smart technology found throughout the hospital.

With myriad apps and hospital-related features to educate, communicate, and entertain, this tool helps patients stay connected to loved ones as well as relevant medical information. Also found in each room, electronic whiteboards and room signs that share real time data about patients, their care plans, and their medical team.

Electronic white boards provide up-to-the-moment information to patients and family, such as the care plan for the day, current care team members, special needs, dietary restrictions, and fall risk and alerts.

A private waiting room in the Intensive Care Unit offers comfortable seating and a quiet place for visitors.

The Concourse Level features multiple seating areas in a calming atmosphere, with a hanging glass sculpture overhead.

A circular information desk provides a welcoming area for patients and visitors as they enter the Main Entrance.

Renovations Underway The first two phases of the Building the Future of Health Care project are complete. Currently, PHASE 3 is underway. This final phase will allow us to reconfigure space in the existing hospital and update the facility for the most efficient use of the space. You can still give to support the hospital and the renovations of the new wing.
