Dear Friends, Every day, when we wake up and look across the lake, we think to ourselves “What a privilege it is to live here!” We’re truly blessed by the natural beauty of our surroundings and by the peace and calm our environment brings to our lives.

Who We Are The Charlevoix County Community Foundation is a charitable organization that’s dedicated to improving and enriching life for all who live in our area. Founded by a group of local citizens in 1992, the organization has grown to be a valuable resource for our county, distributing more than $27 million in grants over the past 27 years.

The feeling of gratitude we have for our surroundings also naturally extends to the people who reside in this county­—each of you, whose generosity and kindness make living here such a pleasure.

This year we are thankful for you and for the ways your gifts have helped spark great ideas all over Charlevoix County. From supporting mental health counseling for youth, to expanding library services, to creating universal access for trails, your gifts have made so many good works possible. We’ve distributed more than $2.6 million in grants this year, making it the largest year ever for grantmaking.

Your support today is just as important as the support the Community Foundation is seeing in the future gifts of our Legacy Society members. Now 65 members strong, this group of philanthropists is helping to ensure the Community Foundation will remain the kind of philanthropic resource Charlevoix County needs and deserves well into the future.

Lakes, rivers, and streams are the connective tissue of northern Michigan—they draw countless wanderers to their shores in all seasons. As stewards of our environment, part of our mission is to ensure that these natural areas are not only preserved, but are accessible to all who wish to see them.

When the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy approached us about bridging the funding gap for improvements to the 255-acre Six Mile Lake/St. Clair Lake Preserve on the border of Charlevoix and Antrim Counties, we knew this project was worthy of an investment. With resources from various funds, we were able to help improve the parking area, kayak

launch, and several viewing areas.

The grant also helped create a quarter-mile gravel trail, and construct a boardwalk.

The universally accessible design of the trail ensures that everyone, from families with strollers to individuals using wheelchairs or walkers, will be able to observe wildlife, be close to the water, and experience the variety of wetland habitats.

“Outdoor recreation can and should be a key component of healthy, active lifestyles for everyone, and the hope here is that these types of universal access opportunities encourage people to get out on the land,” said David Foote, GTRLC’s director of stewardship.

igniting a love of reading What’s blue, pink, yellow, and green, and filled with things to read?

A Bookmobile of course!

This mini library is filled with nearly 3,000 volumes available at various locations throughout the Boyne District Library service area. Up and rolling for just over a year, the Bookmobile provides patrons at area schools, parks, and assisted living facilities the opportunity to check out, return, or order books for delivery. In the past six months alone, the Bookmobile has served more than 4,250 patrons.

The 32 ft. truck was funded by the Community Foundation with resources provided by The Mary K. Peabody Foundation and further evidences Mary’s lifetime (and beyond) financial commitment to support and enhance numerous municipal libraries in Michigan and Indiana. Prior funding from the foundation helped renovate the Boyne District Library in Boyne City and build the Crooked Tree District Library in Walloon Lake Village. Serving as the connector between the Peabody Foundation and our local libraries, the Community Foundation helped all parties achieve their goals to support literacy and library usage throughout our region.

Library Director Monica Kroondyk says, “We wanted to get books in the hands of more patrons, and we’ve had an incredible response to the Bookmobile. Everyone looks forward to seeing it coming.”

glimmers of hope

Life can be confusing and frightening for youth who have experienced trauma. Without the support of well-trained adults, they may face lifelong consequences that could include mental health issues and economic instability.

This issue is of special concern to our Youth Advisory Committee (YAC), whose past two Youth Needs Assessments of area students have revealed mental health issues as one of the top five concerns of local youth.

“Mental health is a huge issue among our friends and classmates, and part of what we get to do is support grants that help address this. It is a privilege to be a part of the solution,” said Nathan Newman, YAC member.

Part of the “solution” involves a YAC recommended grant that provides a trauma counseling and training program. The program, carried out

by Child and Family Services, provides parents, foster parents, and teachers with the appropriate training to support children and youth who have experienced significant trauma. It also helps youth receive the personalized counseling they need. Trauma may be difficult to overcome, but with YAC support, and well-trained adults available, we have hope that those affected will heal and thrive.

Leave a Legacy through the Community Foundation Estate gifts, also called planned, future, or deferred gifts, are meaningful arrangements an individual or couple can make in support of causes and places they care about most. Estate gifts can be made without impacting your current finances and after other gifts—including those to family members.

HERE’S HOW: 1. Indicate a general gift to the Charlevoix County Community Foundation in your estate plan, such as a provision in your will or trust or naming the Community Foundation as a beneficiary of a retirement account.

2. Meet with Community Foundation staff so that we can learn about what issues are important to you and how you hope to make a difference with your estate gift.

3. Complete an agreement that outlines how your estate gift will be applied to meet your charitable goals when the gift is received.

4. Consider whether you would like to join the Legacy Society, which recognizes and thanks individuals and couples who have named the Charlevoix County Community Foundation as a beneficiary of any type of estate gift.

lighting the way When they lived in Lansing, Jim and JoEllen Rudolph dreamed of moving north when they retired. A series of events led them to stop putting their dream on hold, and in 1987 they made the move to Charlevoix County, a decision JoEllen says they “haven’t regretted for even a moment.”

Jim started a research and evaluation business, and JoEllen was a teacher at Char-Em ISD and Charlevoix Elementary School. They quickly got involved serving on the boards of several local organizations and spent time enjoying all that the northern Michigan outdoors has to offer. “We love the changing seasons,” said JoEllen, “and we may be unusual in that we really love winter—it’s beautiful!” Jim enjoys biking, and JoEllen is an avid birder, so it was no surprise when the

By choosing to include a gift in their estate plan, Jim and JoEllen will have an impact on the future of Charlevoix County. “We know our gift will be used wisely by the Community Foundation,” said Jim. The gift, they said, is an expression of gratitude for the lives they’ve been privileged to lead. “We were blessed with good paying jobs, opportunities for upward mobility, and pensions. Given all that we have received, our desire to give back has always guided us.”

Connecting with and inspiring youth has always been part of our mission.

These teens enter our program with limited understanding of philanthropy, and leave after four years with a foundation in community grantmaking. They aren’t just learning by watching, they are actually doing the hard work of conducting needs assessments and reviewing grant applications, engaging in meaningful discussions, and making recommendations to allocate funds. The training they receive now is an investment in the future.

For years, we’ve served our community, waiting for grant applications from local nonprofit organizations, and responding to the needs brought to us. We’re still doing that. But now, we want to do more. We’ve re-imagined our purpose as a community catalyst, and we’re actively looking for ways to connect nonprofit organizations and donors so that we can solve bigger challenges.

We’ve reorganized our grant schedule to enable more strategic grantmaking and more collaboration between community organizations. We’re excited for the future of Charlevoix County, and we look forward to new ways of working together and doing good.
