Heart Failure Fund, provided 2,000 Heart Failure Folders to cardiac patients diagnosed with heart failure at McLaren Northern Michigan last year.

“After surgery, I was given a Heart Failure Folder, which had all the information I could ever need. It had my meal plan, examples of foods I could eat, and charts for how much water I could drink…I felt so relieved having this; like I finally had some control over my situation.”

use heart pillows printed with diagrams of the heart to explain procedures to patients, and after surgery, patients hug the pillows to their chest for comfort when they cough or sit up. Your gifts fund 300 heart pillows each year!

Heart & Vascular Specialists see patients for more than 3,000 appointments each year.

Shivering and cold can skew vascular testing results; your gifts purchased a blanket warmer in Gaylord to keep patients warm while receiving testing!

Michigan Heart & Vascular Specialists now has two additional Flo-Lab Model 2100 SX ABI Machines. ABI machines analyze pulse patterns, take blood pressure readings, and allow clinicians to better diagnose. This enables outreach locations to offer testing to more patients.

FETAL HEART MONITORS: You helped

purchase new portable fetal heart monitors, which track blood pressure, oxygen saturation level, and cardiac rhythm in the Labor and Delivery Unit and Operating Room. These measurements are critical for newborns in cardiac arrest who require stabilization prior to moving.

RECLINERS: A generous grant

from The Rotary Park Fund helped purchase five new recliners for the Cardiovascular Unit. Nearly 1,000 patients recovering from open heart surgery or being treated for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease have already benefited from these new chairs, which allow them to sleep sitting up—the safest and most comfortable position for their recovery.

STRYKER STRETCHER CHAIRS: Thanks to your gifts,

three new Stryker Stretcher Chairs in the Heart Failure Clinic help patients adjust to an ideal position for their treatments. This makes the clinicians' job easier and their treatment more accurate.

DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING EQUIPMENT FOR CATHETERIZATION LAB:

You contributed to the replacement of 10-year-old x-ray equipment in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab. The diagnostic imaging equipment is used to visualize the arteries and chambers of the heart to allow physicians to treat any identified stenosis or abnormalities.

Ablation helped John regain his energy

J

ohn Smith, 73, had his first atrial fibrillation (AFib) episode nine years ago. Over the past three years, John’s episodes increased, making him more uncomfortable. “The drug I was on slowed my heart rate to 55; I felt cold and tired all the time. I had no energy and thought I was just an old man who would just sit in a chair with a blanket on my lap,” said John.

“John is a very social guy,” said his wife, Jan. “Over the past couple of years, our friends would tell me that they were concerned because he didn’t want to do anything.”

In October of 2017, John saw Dr. Daniel Buerkel, a Cardiac Electrophysiologist with McLaren Northern Michigan Heart & Vascular Specialists. John was deemed a candidate for cardiac ablation, a procedure that corrects the abnormal heart rhythm.

To perform John's ablation, Electrophysiologist, Daniel Buerkel, MD, utilized The CARTO 3 System, an advanced imaging technology that uses electromagnetic technology to create real-time three dimensional maps of a patient’s cardiac structures. Thank you to the Robert W. Considine Foundation for purchasing this system.

John and Jan never thought there would be a solution for John’s AFib. Now, after undergoing the ablation, John has more energy to participate in things around the house and to give back to the community. “I couldn’t believe how much energy he had after the first week. Two weeks after ablation, our friends said, 'he’s back!’ Jan said.

“Now, I feel like I have something to look forward to,” John said. “Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!,” Jan added.

Donor’s Gift of New Technology Enhances Cardiac Services

T

hanks to the generosity of Mary Erickson and other donors, a new EPIQ CVx cardiovascular ultrasound system was recently purchased for the cardiac program.

The EPIQ CVx leading-edge ultrasound technology produces exceptionally detailed images, which allow for faster, more accurate diagnosis and treatment.

In the past year, the McLaren Northern Michigan cardiac team completed almost 6,000 vascular ultrasounds.

Thanks to the new EPIQ CVx, doctors are better able to treat patients using the technology, which can: • Detect Slight Changes in Circulation highly sensitive monitors detect minor changes

• Improve Diagnostic Accuracy imaging is 85% more effective than conventional methods • Generate Consistent Results adaptive organ modeling produces highly accurate data Currently this ultrasound machine is used to diagnose and treat valve replacement candidates.

The cardiac program plans to use this technology to better visualize structural problems including atrial fibrillation and endocarditis. Mary's generosity will improve the diagnostic tests offered to thousands of patients each year. Thank you, Mary!

Building the Future of Health Care for Cardiology

A

s we look to the future of McLaren Northern Michigan, we want to ensure that our Heart Program continues to offer the highest quality care available.

One way to do that will be to expand our Telemetry Monitoring Field in the new hospital wing and throughout the entire building. The Telemetry expansion will increase monitoring capacity from 60 patients to 120 patients. It will include all inpatient areas and significantly increase coverage in testing areas such as Nuclear Medicine, X-Ray, MRI, and CT, among others.

Here’s a brief overview of that project and how you can help.

What is Telemetry Monitoring?

The Telemetry Monitoring System tracks and analyzes data about a patient’s heart activity.

The Telemetry Monitoring System watches for dangerous heart conditions, such as:

• Bradycardia • Pauses • Tachycardia • Atrial Fibrillation

How does it work? Patients are fitted with transmitters, which staff can monitor remotely.

Who uses the Telemetry system? Every patient recovering

from a heart attack, heart failure, cardiac surgery, open heart surgery, or respiratory failure.

Why is it needed? The

Telemetry System helps staff monitor patients’ heart rhythms and track any changes that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heartrelated complications.

Where will it work? The

Telemetry Monitoring System will be incorporated throughout the New Wing, making it possible to continuously monitor patients in all inpatient units and testing areas.

During the project’s second phase— renovation of the existing space— Telemetry will also be expanded to Labor & Delivery and Pediatrics.

How much does it cost? $3.5 million initial investment.
