A Word From the President Dear Trail Supporters, Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm for our wonderful system of trails in Northern Michigan.

The Top of Michigan Trails continue to thrive as the Trails Council pursues its mission to provide you with safe, scenic and secure trails. We do this through prioritizing our efforts in an acronym we like to call AMP — Advocate, Maintain and Promote our trail system.

As we continue to expand the existing system into new areas and new connections; ensure the quality of our existing trails; and engage the next generation with the trails, your support is important, now more than ever.

What do we mean by AMP? Or Advocate, Maintain and Promote?

Advocate – We create partnerships – like our partnership with TART (Traverse Area Regional Trails) – to help connect Northern Michigan by trail. With TART, we are working towards the long-sought goal of connecting our respective trail systems. After advocating for this trail, we are happy to report that it is under development and once complete, recreational users will be able to access trails connecting the Leelanau peninsula in the west, Alpena in the east, Mackinaw City in the north and Gaylord in the south. These trails will connect these cities with Charlevoix, Petoskey, Harbor Springs and other cities in Northern Michigan.

We continue to seek opportunities for new trails in 2019 and will report back next year with our expanded plans.

Maintain – In 2018 we worked with 5H Irrigation to cut the roots on the Northwestern Trail between Petoskey and Alanson. This successful maintenance project helped create a model for our other trails which are experiencing problems with roots pushing through the asphalt.

In addition, we worked to correct a dangerous and challenging intersection on the trail to keep them safe for all users, pedestrians and cyclists alike.

Promote – We have programs that promote the use of the trails, for everyone from kids to adults.

In the spring, the Kids Biking Initiative introduces kids to the trails by bicycle. In the winter our Nordic Rocks program teaches area students to cross country ski and the value of our trails system in all seasons. These programs help encourage a lifelong habit of outdoor recreation and activity in our area children.

In addition to kids’ programs, our annual running event, the Top of Michigan Festival of Races, continues to grow and is responsible for bringing significant number of tourists to the area and introducing them to our trail system.

Top of Michigan Trails Update The Top of Michigan Trails Council has your back to get around Northern Michigan by trail. Through Staff, Board and Volunteer time, we’ve been working tirelessly to advocate for trails that will connect the Leelanau Peninsula to Mackinac City and across the state to Alpena. Here are exciting updates on the trails we are working on just for you!

A

Boyne City to Charlevoix

With Phase 1 (Boyne City past Young State Park) and Phase 2 (US-31 to Quarterline Rd) of the Boyne City to Charlevoix trail complete, this long awaited connection between Charlevoix and Boyne City is still in the works. The next step will be to continue from Phase 1 and carry the trail through the village of Horton Bay, starting to close the gap between the two ends of the trail. Once that is complete, we can start working on Phases 4 and 5 to complete the trail.

Boyne Valley

Moving to the other side of Boyne City, the Boyne Valley trail will connect Boyne City to not only five schools and Boyne Mountain, it will also connect to Boyne Falls Village with trailhead parking. With funds secure, contractors are expected to bid in 2019 and construction is slated to start as soon as the paperwork is in place.

Burt Lake

Phase II of the Burt Lake Trail is scheduled to be bid out the first week of May 2019 with construction to follow in the summer of 2019. This will continue the trail on West Burt Lake Road, travel through UM Biological station property and end at East Burt Lake Road near Riggsville Rd. This phase will be paved and mostly separated from the road.

To continue the trail, we hope that by the end of 2019 funding will be secured for Phases III and IV. This phase runs along East Burt Lake Road and will connect the first two phases of trail with the already-completed Phase V.

Traverse City to Charlevoix Connector

In August of 2018, the 46 mile Traverse City to Charlevoix trail received $2.4 million in funding from the State of Michigan to complete design and construction engineering, getting it shovel-ready for construction. Top of Michigan Trails Council raised an additional $100,000 to assist in constructing the trail section through Fisherman’s Island State Park. Concept plans for the Fisherman’s Island trail should start in spring/summer of 2019.

Other communities like Acme on the southern end of the trail have completed trail construction in Bayside Park. That spot will be the first trailhead for the Traverse City to Charlevoix Trail.

Keeping the Trails Safe, Scenic & Secure Maintaining the trails takes a coordinated effort, especially because not one entity owns the trails. Most of our trails, either in their entirety or in segments, are owned by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR). Others are owned by units of local government such as the City of Petoskey, Emmet, or Charlevoix County. But no matter who owns the trail, we work to make sure they are clean and safe for your use.

The volunteer crews work tirelessly in early April to clear the trails of debris and all of the sand and dirt that the snow from the winter leaves behind. Sometimes you’ll even see machinery on the trails, working to preserve existing paved trails, by cutting the roots that could cause bumps and cracks in the surface.

To help fund our maintenance efforts, we host a bike swap every year in the lawn at the Packy Offield Trail Center. It is a great opportunity to get rid of your bikes that are not used but in working condition – and you get to share your proceeds with the Top of Michigan Trails Council – it is a win-win!

In addition to clearing the trail, there will be a team of volunteers on the Little Traverse Wheelway this summer – the Little Traverse Wheelway Ambassadors. The goal is to train a passionate group of volunteers to monitor the Wheelway within the city limits, and to serve as ambassadors to share information with trail users. Let us know if you’d like to participate.

Who does a better job at promoting the trails than the wonderful volunteers of the Top of Michigan Trails Council? Their countless hours spent cleaning trails, helping people at the visitor’s center and helping the Festival of Races run smoothly show the love and dedication the community has to the trails of Northern Michigan. Thank you to those who give their time!

Programs for You and Your Family The Top of Michigan Trails Council offers programming that helps promote the use of the trail system – all 300 miles of it.

Kids Biking Initiative Now in its third year, a team, led by Cindy Okerlund, an educational leader for the Top of Michigan Trials Council (TOMTC), coordinates with fourth grade classes across Emmet County teaching students about the health benefits of bicycling, bike safety, and the beautiful trails that we have in northern Michigan.

The Emmet County Kids Biking Initiative leads these Emmet County 4th graders on an eight-mile fitness bike ride along with North Western State Trail with educational stops along the way – learning everything from map reading to bike maintenance, to the history of the Hiawatha Pageant and a science tour of the Oden Fish Hatchery.

Smart Commute The first full week in June kicks off Smart Commute. With breakfasts offered by local businesses in the Petoskey area, residents are encouraged to use forms of transportation other than riding alone in their cars. The program energizes participants to think about how they get from point A to point B and accomplish some pretty impressive feats along the way.

Lake to Lake Each September, participants of the Lake to Lake tour dip their rear tires in Lake Huron in Alpena, then ride the nearly 125 miles across the state. Utilizing the North Eastern State Trail, North Central State Trail, Burt Lake Trail, North Western State Trail and the Little Traverse Wheelway over a period of three days, they complete their trek with dipping their front tires in Lake Michigan in Petoskey. As a promotional event, funds raised through this event support the Trails Council’s mission.

Festival of Races On May 26, 2018 the Little Traverse Wheelway was full of over 500 runners competing in marathon, half marathon, 10k and 5k distances. Runners from 10 to 88 came from over 20 states and provinces to enjoy running with Little Traverse Bay by their sides.

This year’s event will take place May 25, 2019.

Financials The Top of Michigan Trails Council is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that depends on donations, memberships, grants and fundraising activities to pay for its operations. Restricted funds shown on the balance sheet are maintained by the Trails Council on behalf of local trail committees that have raised money to be used as the local match for state and federal trail development funding.
