destination [ des-tuh-ney-shuhn ] (adjective) “Being a place that people will make a special trip to visit.” (noun) “The place to which someone or something is going or being sent.” Whether you're talking adjective or noun; whether you're a "firsttimer," a frequent visitor, or a resident; whether you're looking to work or play... the Breezeway communities of East Jordan, Ellsworth and Atwood are “perfect destinations” for you. Experience and enjoy! Our area is rich in the arts, culture, recreation and entrepreneurial offerings and amenities. As you read through this year’s directory, you will find a great deal of information on our communities and businesses. If you are a new resident to our area and want to get involved in a club, organization or serve on a festival board, please reach out to the Chamber. We have a list of contact names and numbers. This is a wonderful area to get involved and to help make a positive difference. This year, be sure to try a new sport or hobby. Visit a new business. Check out a new attraction. We’d love to see you, your family and friends enjoying and experiencing our gorgeous destination! Share your photos on our Facebook page or use #ejchamber so we can share for all to see! Thank you to all of our awesome business owners, residents and volunteers for all that you have done and continue to do to make East Jordan, Ellsworth and Atwood the perfect destinations any time of the year! Hope to see you soon! Most sincerely, Mary H. Faculak, President/CEO :: www.ejchamber.org ::

Jordan River Arts Council We invite you to make the Jordan River Arts Council a destination on your creative journey. Whether you seek inspiration, innovation, information or involvement in a dynamic organization, you can find it at the center, 301 Main Street in East Jordan. Since its inception in 1989, JRAC has been an all -volunteer organization dedicated to building our cultural community by “bringing art into living” throughout Charlevoix and Antrim Counties and beyond. Everyone is welcome and admission is always free. After a year of public health restrictions JRAC is eager to resume its programming schedule of unique exhibits, workshops, performances, focus groups and outreach to our community. We invite

you to peruse an exhibit - whether it be our annual Student Scholarship and Membership Shows, or a themed juried exhibition in our gallery. While there, browse the delightful items crafted by local artists in our gift shop. We invite you to join the plein air painters during their summer weekly outings; and the Writers Group, the Drawing Group or Socrates Café as they meet throughout the year. Watch for special workshop offerings and pop-up exhibits as the year progresses. The Arts Council is a proud sponsor of Music in the Park and The Jordan Walk of Art. DESTINATION

Raven Hill Discovery Center Raven Hill is nestled in a rural setting with ponds, swamps, forests & fields on 175 acres. It is the only place in northern Lower Michigan where children and adults can link science, history & the arts with hands-on activities and explorations both indoors and outdoors. Connections emerge through classes, exhibits and facilities that provide the perfect DESTINATION for all ages to learn, create, grow and play. :-) The Watershed Model is a DESTINATION where you can shed your shoes, stick your toes in the water and enjoy the waterfall, wetlands and bubbling springs that merge and flow down to a little “lake.” Then visit the Earth Tones Music Garden with its oversized, tuned instruments. Jurassic Park is also a great DESTINATION, where you can walk through time and observe the Earth’s geologic history, including real rocks, fossils, trees and sculptural interpretations of extinct plants and animals that lived here before, during, and after the ever popular dinosaurs. Another popular DESTINATION is the Schoolhouse where each member of the family enjoys sitting in the kind of desk they used when they were in school and everyone can take turns being teacher. Another well-loved DESTINATION is the Treehouse, built in the shape of a maple leaf. The “stem” acts as a ramp, making it accessible to everyone. The Wetlands Boardwalk winds its way through a primordial swamp, connecting the main campus and another DESTINATION, the Ancient World - a 30-acre field that is filled with things that most people just read about in textbooks. Climb the Egyptian pyramid, sit a spell on the Sphinx, walk under the Roman Arch, figure out the date and time using the Obelisk, take your picture by the Moai (the Easter Island head) and more. 14

YOUR DESTINATION FOR

Our Stone Labyrinth is a great DESTINATION for those interested in winding their way through the its pathways and spending time meditating on the sitting rock in the center. Also make The Pond across the road from the Center a DESTINATION. There you’ll find frogs and turtles if you’re patient enough. Please remember to respect the plants along the edge of the shoreline. If you look closely, you might find a red-wing blackbird nest or a dragonfly molt. If you like trees, another DESTINATION is the Taxi Trail where trees are planted by family - rose, maple, willow, pine, etc. Twenty-four tree families line the Taxi Trail and the signs at each family will show you how that family of plants have been used for food, medicine, shelter, transportation, and other necessities of life. A new DESTINATION to look forward to this summer is the Connections Trail, a half-mile walking trail with hands-on learning stations spaced along the pathway. It will parallel the Taxi Trail, so visitors can enjoy more science, history & art activities safely in an open-air setting. This summer, there will be a few hands-on exhibits in the Main Museum, with both the Museum and Animal Rooms being mostly “eyes-only,” due to the pandemic. The indoors will definitely be a DESTINATION for any visitors wanting to see the unique displays that have temporarily replaced many of the hands-on exhibits. Raven Hill is open weekends year-round: Saturday 12pm - 4pm; Sunday 2pm - 4pm. From Memorial Day to Labor Day: Center hours expand to include weekdays as well: 10am to 4pm daily. The Center is always open by appointment. Please note: Raven Hill Discovery Center will re-open safely on Saturday, April 17, 2021, as state pandemic guidelines allow. Indoors, visitor numbers will be limited and everyone will be asked to mask and socially distance. www.MiRavenHill.org. :: www.ejchamber.org ::

Kayaking, Rafting, Canoeing Fishing Sailing, Powerboating, Pontooning Waterskiing, Tubing, Jet Skiing, Paddleboarding Plain Old Swimming Did we mention fishing?

The Jordan River The Jordan River is a 24.9-mile-long stream, the largest tributary of Lake Charlevoix. The Jordan's headwaters rise from springs in the upper Jordan River Valley northeast of Mancelona in Antrim County. The Jordan River was the first river to be designated in Michigan's Natural Rivers Program. The Jordan River is well known for its world-class brook trout fishing and for its scenic canoe trips. The headwaters are accessible by many foot and snowmobile trails.

Lake Charlevoix Lake Charlevoix was once voted the second best lake in America in a USA Today poll, behind only Lake Tahoe. Being awarded this honor is partly due to the many forms of recreation the lake provides, including swimming, kayaking, sailing, fishing, diving, boating, water skiing, and just relaxing on the beach. Lake Charlevoix is also one of Michigan’s largest and most magnificent lakes. It is the 3rd largest lake in the state in terms of surface area, but its shoreline length far exceeds that of any other inland lake in Michigan. If you kayak the entire shoreline of Lake Charlevoix, you will have traversed 60 miles! 20

Chain of Lakes Water Trail The Chain of Lakes is a highlight to our region and it is no wonder. These connected lakes are diverse paddling opportunities on some of northern Michigan’s clear pristine lakes. The Chain of Lakes Water Trail is one of only eight state-designated water trails and the only water trail in Northern Michigan. This non-motorized water trail has over 80 miles of routes to explore and something for all types of paddlers. The Upper Chain is made up of smaller lakes and is a great experience for beginner paddlers. Paddle through a mile of protected shoreline, check out an island, or just enjoy the calm and quiet of paddling through the crystal waters. You can begin, end or pass through the three lakeside communities of Ellsworth, Central Lake, and Bellaire where you will find food, camping, and all the other amenities you need to make your trip complete. The Lower Chain includes larger lakes like Torch Lake and Elk Lake for experienced paddlers looking for an adventure. Explore the serene Grass River Natural Area, find a sunken ship, or just enjoy the turquoise waters of Torch Lake. In Bellaire, Alden, and Elk Rapids you will find all you need to enjoy your time on the water. While you are here, join Paddle Antrim for a local paddling class or event on the water. More Hiking! Jordan Valley Pathway The Jordan Valley Pathway is an 18-mile hiking trail in the Jordan River Valley. The pathway winds through the Mackinaw State Forest along the Jordan River. This scenic valley is well worth a trip in any season, however fall colors are noteworthy due to its rich hardwood forests. Its looped trail system is mixed with moderate to rugged topography, providing excellent opportunities for hikers and backpackers. The full pathway is a good two-day hike. Backpackers can stay at the Pinney Bridge State Campground, located near the trail’s halfway point (dispersed camping is not allowed in the Jordan Valley). Hikers can conveniently start and end at the same place if completing a smaller loop or the whole trail. The Towns of Our Community make this area more than a DESTINATION ... it’s a Way of Living!

CITY OF EAST JORDAN

Where River, Lake and Friendly People Meet In addition to City Hall operations, the East Jordan city government departments include 24-hour police protection, a devoted volunteer fire department, public works that includes public water and sewer services, parks/recreation, membership in the Jordan Valley Ambulance Authority and a very active Downtown Development Authority working on multiple projects and partnership efforts. East Jordan is very proud of where we’re going and where we’ve been. Teamwork is a key component in everything we do. Leadership and collaborations between organizations, businesses, schools and government operations are strong in East Jordan and continue to build a resilient community.

BANKS TOWNSHIP

Tom Cannon City Administrator

Alex Busman Banks Township

Banks Township is a rural jewel in the north end of Antrim County. The spring and summer months bring a gorgeous green to our rolling hills; the Chain of Lakes provide ample water recreation opportunities; and winter offers up a crisp change of scenery on the lakes. Play on the Lake Michigan shoreline at Banks Township Park or walk and bike ride the non-motorized trails at Antrim Creek Natural Area. Whatever your recreational itch, Banks Township is a great destination to scratch it.

VILLAGE OF ELLSWORTH

Founded in 1881 and incorporated as a village in 1938, Ellsworth is located on the scenic Breezeway and Chain of Lakes. If you are seeking a great place to live, retire, or play, Ellsworth is the place. With its park system, waterways, scenic roads, and snowmobile trails, Ellsworth is a great area to take advantage of Michigan’s Natural Resources during the four seasons. Hugh Campbell Village President

ATWOOD

Atwood is home to several farm markets, a winery, 3 restaurants, a John Deere mecca, a motel, a famous tiny chapel and an 18-hole golf course. Oh, and a 156 acre public natural area is located on Lake Michigan which has some of the best sunsets in the State! :: www.ejchamber.org ::

MEDICAL & HEALTHCARE HEROES Wow! Where do we start?! From Covid Testing to Telehealth to Drive-thru Prescriptions to Vaccinations, the East Jordan Family Health Center & Pharmacy staff has had our backs all year. Our Jordan Valley EMS Authority has worked day and night to respond with professionalism, optimism and speed to every frightening moment we've encountered. And how do we begin to honor the heroes at Grandvue Medical Care Facility? This past year, they have not only had the responsibility to care for and protect our beloved family members and friends, but had to keep their spirits up when many felt abandoned due to visitation restrictions. What a weighty, but impactful and awe-inspiring job.

FOOD HEROES "Food Insecurity" was a new terms that popped up the past year and it hit our communities as hard as anywhere. With school, restaurant and church closures, so many sources of meals for people - especially our most vulnerable - suddenly vanished. Enter our "Food Heroes" - starting with the Commission on Aging / East Jordan Senior Center. When congregate meals were allowed, they never missed a beat; and when they weren't, COA organized an army for meal deliveries and pick-ups. The East Jordan Public Schools worked overtime to provide the meals to students that schools closings had interrupted. And when EJPS couldn't keep up, our Local Churches, Restaurants and Service Organizations helped. Close! Open at 25%! Close! Open for Take-out & Delivery Only! Close! Open at 50%! Our poor Restaurants and their staffs. But they have been very creative and resilient. Left: The Foundry. Right: Winter Aerial View at Shorts :-) Also, a big salute to the essential workers at our Local Grocery Stores, Convenience Stores, and Farm Markets who kept their shelves stocked, their workplaces clean and safe, and their attitudes positive.... which wasn't always easy. 58

YOUR DESTINATION FOR EDUCATION HEROES Obviously, the students, teachers and staffs at our schools have been through the ringer this year and deserve all sorts of medals and awards for their perseverence! The challenge wasn't just keeping up with regular teaching and learning, but worrying about and supporting everyone's physical and mental health. Speaking of physical and mental health, thank you to The Depot - Jordan Valley Teen Center for helping to keep our kids engaged and for providing lots of snacks! Kudos also to North Central Michigan College, Raven Hill Discovery Center, the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra and others for providing online classes, talks, concerts and more to keep all of us mentally "stimulated" and growing.

FINANCIAL HEROES There were many federal and state programs to aid businesses and indiviuals financially through this terrible time, but we would like to praise our Local Banks for their handling of the PPP Loans/Grants and for everything else they did to help us! There is nothing like knowing you hometown bank has your back. Another local hero is the Charlevoix County Community Foundation which set up an Urgent Needs Fund this year to address, of course, some of the community's most urgent needs.

COMMUNICATION HEROES One of our biggest heroes of all is the East Jordan Area Chamber of Commerce. Beginning in April 2020, the Chamber has put out at least one (usually more) eCapsule each week with every scrap of information anyone could possibly need about life in the community! Businesses, Schools, Services, State Info, Financial Help, Health Department, you name it... they covered it! And Mary Faculak is now the Queen of Zoom! 'Chamber Chats,' board meetings, and zoom calls with every alliance and statewide group that could possibly be of any help to us. Thanks, Mary!

A FEW OTHER BIG LITTLE HEROES EJ Laundry: Not only did they offer a really good deal to drop off laundry during the pandemic, but they were also the first to offer Wifi for students now online. Later the City and Great Lakes Energy also set up Wifi hotspots for students. Charlevoix County Transit: Added extra services and, at times, eliminated fares. Constantly adjusted their schedules and services depending on community needs. Local Stores: Special hours for seniors and curb-side pick-up. MItchell Graphics: Special deals on signs and labels for Covid. Charlevoix County News: Free listings for businesses struggling to survive. North Bays Design Group: For designing a beautiful 2020 Visitors Guide despite the awful circumstances of Covid cancellations and other problems! :-) :: www.ejchamber.org ::

SOLAR SPARKS The students in East Jordan middle school’s Shoe Club surpassed their audacious goal of raising $70,000 to install a 30 kiloWatt solar array on the school’s roof! The array powered up on Earth Day, April 22, 2021. The benefits of this array include: saving the school money, education about renewable energy, exposing students to careers in clean energy, as well many benefits to the environment. The life span of the array is 25-30 years. This is the largest student-led solar installation that we are aware of in northern Michigan. "Dreaming big, setting goals, working hard and giving back is a central purpose of the Shoe Club,” explains teacher and club coach Matt Hamilton. This project would not have been possible without the incredible support from the community.

JOINING JORDAN This $2.2M Community Development Block Grant project includes a pedestrian boardwalk featuring pavilions and a fishing deck that will connect the main pier of the City Marina on the east side of Lake Charlevoix to the new pocket park on the west side. The Waterfront Pocket Park will serve as an anchor on the west side of Lake Charlevoix and the mouth of the Jordan River. There will also be updates to the M-32 bridge corridor creating a safer shared-use options for crossing the Jordan River factoring in vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, and snowmobiles.

Jordan Art Walk This year, strategically placed statues will be added to the East Jordan landscape to stay for years to come, as part of the Jordan Art Walk exhibit. The goal is to integrate works of art into the city’s natural environment that will engage and resonate with citizens and visitors. This is a collaborative project of the City of East Jordan, the East Jordan Area Chamber of Commerce, the Friends of the Jordan and the Jordan River Arts Council.

EAST JORDAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS Building a foundation with a world class education combined with the small school feel and caring environment that our parents have come to trust, our goal is to provide our students with experiences that will last a lifetime... and memories to share forever. EJPS comprises a vibrant part of the community and takes its job of educating East Jordan’s youth seriously. Thanks to our generous community, the district was recently able to upgrade infrastructural items, replace technology, provide secure entry ways, replace buses, and overhaul the high school gym. In the classrooms, on stage, and on the field of competition, East Jordan students continue to make us proud. We are pleased to boast a wide variety of academic courses, and continue to grow while challenging our students to create, design, build, and apply. While academic studies and preparation is a primary focus, it is also recognized that in order to prepare our students to be well-rounded, productive members of a community, we must encourage them to take pride in all areas of their growth. Whether through athletics, the arts, community service or simply treating others with respect, East Jordan Pride is a commitment to always doing your best.
