Bay View Cottage Walk 2018

Welcome!

July 10, 2018

Cottage Walk 2018 continues a long history of hospitality and fellowship at Bay View. For 141 years since its founding, Bay View has opened its arms, doors and hearts to visitors from around the globe. On today’s Cottage Walk, you’ll have a chance to peek inside seven lovely family cottages of all shapes, sizes and styles. Though they were all built during the Victorian era, no two are alike. Some are large and grand, some are small and cozy; some are steeped in history and some have a more modern appeal. Bay View offers something for everyone! Today’s event is a joint fundraiser of the Bay View Woman’s Council and the Morning Council. Both groups work to promote education, fellowship, and philanthropy in and around Bay View. Proceeds from today’s event help support Bay View activities and programming, along with Petoskey-area charities, such as: • $1,000 scholarship to a Petoskey High School senior girl • The Woman’s Resource Center • Manna Food Project: weekend food backpacks • Char-Em United Way school supplies “Stuff the Bus” • Red Cross, local relief Please consider joining the Morning Council and/or Woman’s Council! Membership in both groups is open to all women, whether they live in Bay View or not. $10 is all it takes to join both groups for the entire 8-week season. Our weekly meetings usually include some business, some social time, and some educational programming. Both meet at the Woman’s Council Building, the site of today’s registration. The Woman’s Council meets Tuesdays from 1:30 – 3:00 pm, and Morning Council meets Thursdays from 9:30 to 11:30 am. We hope you enjoy your tour of Bay View today. We think it’s a warm and special place, and we’re glad to share it with you in such an intimate way. Come back soon, stay for a long while, and make new and lifelong friends in this little slice of heaven. Sincerely, Julia Healy Kathy Duquette President President Bay View Morning Council Bay View Woman’s Council

A note from today’s host committee We’re so glad you decided to spend the day in Bay View. Your basecamp will be the Woman’s Council Building and volunteers will be dotting the community to help you in any way. Built in 1887, the Woman’s Council Building is the site of the Welcome Center and starting point for the Cottage Walk. Guests will pick up their wrist bands, booties and programs here before beginning their tour of the cottages. Originally, The Woman’s Council Building was the home of the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circles, which had more than 125,000 members. Today it is the home of the two women’s groups, The Woman’s Council and The Morning Council who are partnering today to bring you Cottage Walk 2018. The first floor of the building includes a meeting room and a newly renovated kitchen, while the second floor has five rooms for women renters. Today, many social, educational, and fundraising events are held here in the summer including the weekly meetings and programs of Woman’s Council and Morning Council, to which all are welcome. We hope you enjoy this peek inside some of Bay View’s favorite cottages, each with a personality and history all its own. We’re thrilled you have joined us today. Thank you for coming to Bay View. We hope to see you again soon!

2

Black Cottage 1965 Hemlock Block 17, Lot 13 In 2002 this cottage needed foundation work. During the process a large fireplace crumbled, leaving a convenient opening for the kitchen bar. An addition completed the open concept floor plan. Blue and yellow are bright and welcoming colors which keep the living space feeling cohesive and perfectly fit this family’s hospitable personality. Carefully incorporated original furniture and the owner’s artistic touches result in a perfect blend of old and new.

3

Byers Cottage 1993 Stephens Lane Block 18, Lot 11 This cottage may boast Bay View’s only red and white checked floor! Cheerful touches of red tie the kitchen to the rest of the house. This cottage also offers a “peek of the bay” with a bit of contortion. The elegant cottage gardens and walkways make the outside as wonderful as the inside. The tower (not pictured) was recently restored to its original glory.

This cottage is sponsored by MGM Construction.

4

Sutton Cottage 1975 Forrest Block 23, Lot 22

One of the fascinating aspects of Bay View is the variety of talents found in its residents. This talented cottage owner designs and builds furniture, which perfectly compliments this charming 1899 cottage. From the welcoming whirly-gig at the front door to the barbeque cart at the end, it’s obvious the handmade treasures set this cottage apart from the rest!

5

Breisach Cottage 1635 Knapp Ave Block 22, Lot 21

Amazingly, in 2002 the entire back section of the cottage was listing forward and was 8 out of plumb! A remodel managed to save the cottage and in the downstairs family room there is evidence of the 8 lean in a doorway. This family preserved this cottage using traditional materials and reclaimed hardware while also adding modern comforts and a guest level.

6

Terrace Inn 1549 Glendale Block 20, Lots 18-21 A jewel of Bay View, this friendly inn opened in 1911 and has welcomed holiday-makers every year since. The current owners, Mo and Patty Rasmussen, have amassed a collection of nearly 300 original works of art, from artists in residence including renown artists, Greg Sobran and Noel Skiba. Original furniture by Albert Pick & Co. and beautiful headboards from the inn’s earliest years make this comfortable inn so special. Stop in for a cool glass of iced-tea, use the restrooms and wander around the Terrace Inn. Serving dinner nightly.

7

Clay-Collins Cottage 1575 Park Ave Block 1, Lot 14 This 1879 cottage has been owned by the same family for 54 years. It contains some of the original furniture, originally purchased for the cottage specifically for the high ceilings. The plaster walls allow elegant wallpaper, a rarity in Bay View. It offers a surprise guest apartment and the garden of peonies gives the cottage its name: “Peony Place.” The cottage contains some of the circa 1876 “Renaissance Revival” furniture that was brought to the cottage because of the high ceilings.

8

Flanigan Cottage 1612 Woodland Block 1, Lot 9

As a girl, this cottager grew up in her grandma’s summer residence directly located behind this cottage. She always dreamed of living in this cottage! Drop ceilings were removed to reveal the beautiful open planking in the living room and dining room. Taupe and blue ceilings draw your attention upward. Hardwood floors throughout this cottage welcome sandy feet as this busy family returns from daily treks to the beach.

9

Healy Cottage 1738 Woodland Ave Block 2, Lot 6 Originally built in 1877, this cottage’s friendly elegance is showcased by the owner’s simple, contemporary style, which perfectly complements the stunning view of Lake Michigan. Visitors might be surprised to learn that a needlepoint footstool inspired the décor. The unusual accent of orange throughout is a cheeky wink to casual lakeside living, perfect for the active young family that lives here.

This cottage is sponsored by Duran Construction.

10 Bay View Library Open for Visitors 2 pm - 4 pm Used Book Sale (on lawn) 9 am - 1 pm

The Bay View Library was chartered in 1888, when various publishing houses collectively contributed 180 volumes as a nucleus for the new library. The location of the library changed several times until 1931, when the present library was built. Today the library contains more than 9,000 titles. Every year, more than 200 new titles are added. The library was fully computerized in 1992 and is one of the largest libraries existing in a summer community.

10 Crouse Memorial Chapel Open for Visitors 8:30 am - 2 pm

The S. Pettengill Grocery store first occupied this 1889 building. It continued as a grocery store under the various names of Clyde Bear, Smith and Lake, and Crago Grocery store until the 1960s. Then, the Bay View recreation department used this building as the craft house for the Boys’ and Girls’ Club. In 1993, this building was transformed into the Crouse Memorial Chapel, a gift from Virginia Galvin Crouse. The Sacrament is celebrated here every Sunday morning during the summer months, and baptisms, memorial services, and small weddings also take place here. In the spring of 2012, the large stained glass windows in the chancel were installed. They were designed and created by Shadetree Studio in Petoskey.

10 Gathering Place/Post Office Open for Visitors 10 am - 4 pm

You are also invited into the Post Office for a peek at old-fashioned mailboxes and you may also make a purchase at the Gathering Post where snacks and coffee will be for sale.

13 Evelyn Hall Open for visitors 10 am - 1 pm

In 1889, John M. Hall asked the Bay View board to find a location for the summer headquarters of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union. The resulting building, Evelyn Hall, is currently considered one of the finest examples of Steamboat Victorian Architecture in the United States. Throughout its history, Evelyn Hall has also been used as a tea room, art school, dance studio, chapel, Sunday school, lecture hall, costume studio, set design workshop, girls’ dormitory for Albion College, and a cooking school where Irma Rombauer, author of Joy of Cooking, studied.

12 Bay View Historical Museums Open for visitors 2 pm - 3 pm

Come visit these two quaint buildings that document the history of Bay View. One is known as the “Speaker’s Stand” built in 1876, which served as the site of the early Bay View campground meetings.
